Especially when you consider defenders - back then you had Maldini, Nesta, Puyol, Hierro, Ayala, Stam, Ferdinand, Thuram, Campbell just to name a few off the top of my head. Compare that to nowadays.
Simon Curtis I’m a Liverpool fan and I still see Lampard as world class. The ability he had to arrive late in the box to score, he’s one of the best I’ve ever seen to do it. Might not be as good as some of the rest, but certainly fits in in that list anyways

They're right. With defenders being coached to play from the back and be more comfortable on the ball, full backs are bombing forward, these roles have overlapped the midfielders. Midfielders need to be more versatile in the modern game with fluidity, transition etc. Even Kante, who you'd class as a CDM finds himself playing further ahead for France and Chelsea than he did at LCFC. I'd also say the world class players Roy played with, CRonaldo, Schmichael, Scholes, Giggs. Great analysis of Irwin as well...a fellow Corkman lol

I’m a Liverpool fan but we need more players like Keano in the modern game. I play in college and if you take a boot to the ankle or an elbow to the face you’re expected to get on with it. I think it’s an issue that needs to be solved with the players and the refs but it’s only at the professional level where u don’t see this brand of football being played where u treat it like a war and if u take a knock u put ur head down and keep fighting
As a Liverpool fan, I think Keane is one of the best pundits out there. Says it like it is, when others just follow the crowd. I've read his book (1st edition), highly recommended. I always thought he was a dirty player when I was younger, but now I see it as a collection of aggression, bravery, leadership and determination. A lot of teams miss this when they are behind in games, and require a psychological boost (or a kick in the arse) to get on level terms. He really is the perfect captain with those traits.

As a Liverpool fan & fellow countryman of Keano, I feel that he should’ve won the World player of the year in 1999, he out played the midfield of Juve which consist of Zidane, Davids & Dechamps. The Balon d'or points didn't make any sense that year. Pavel Nevned was fantastic that year. Keane won the PFA player of the year and the United player of the year and Beckham even finished above him in the rankings.

The midfields of 1998 to 2002/5 were very tough. The bayern midfield with effenberg, deportivo with djaminha, madrid with Redondo, Milan with gattuso etc... some of today's midfields wdnt get a sniff.

The midfields of 1998 to 2002/5 were very tough. The bayern midfield with effenberg, deportivo with djaminha, madrid with Redondo, Milan with gattuso etc... some of today's midfields wdnt get a sniff.

Pundits and their nostalgic analysis about how the game used to be...In my humble opinion, for all of his discipline and leadership on the field, I would never pick Keane ahead of Kante Kroos Rakitic Pjanic or Modric. You got to understand that Keane was surrounded by a world class squad. I'd love to see him in nowadays united team, if he would make more of a difference than Pogba. Seriously doubt it.
I agree with you, all this nostalgia about players and downplaying the current players has become a trend. There will be always some people saying " today's players are nothing compared to the players back in my day". They just don't wanna admit that there'll be always some great players in every era...

Loved the Denis Irwin mention at the end - criminally underrated player. Ashley Cole gets all the plaudits/mentions in Premier League "all time" lists, but Irwin's consistency and longevity were outstanding. Probably our best ever left back.
