Anesthesiologist here. I learned that my patient the next day was deaf mute, so I looked up sign language and learned the basics or what I needed to tell her and what things I needed from her. All the while, nurses, staff and the patient would write down their conversation. When I came inside the room the next day, and signed “Hi, good morning,” I immediately saw some relief in her eyes and knew there was a big grin behind her mask. I learned just enough to be able to communicate and understand her.
That is wonderful. Whenever I have surgery I have wanted the anesthesiologist to look me in the eye and it is like y'all are trained on how to look the patient right back in the eye with such understanding, humanity and gravitas. It is so reassuring and instantly builds a bond without words but going that extra step to learn a little bit of sign language was very kind and I am sure meant the world to her.
Blind and deaf must be so horrifying. Such a blessing for him to meet this young lady who is so brave to be his voice for a brief moment in time. A truly beautiful and kind young lady in such an ugly and hateful world we live in, I wish her the best. And lets not forget the flight attendant that made the efforts to reach out to this poor man, that in itself shows a great deal of concern for others, she could have just as easily walked by the man as so many have done before.
Me, too. That girl was awesome. I love her for what she did. Just when I am about to totally give up on this world as it is today, someone wonderful shows up to still give me hope.
I'd love it if sign language was taught in school as part of the core curriculum. I've used the very basic sign language I learned outside of school a lot more than the foreign languages I had to learn in school. Adding sign language as a core subject would be so empowering and inclusive for those who rely on it to communicate :)

Clara: It's weird I'm getting so much attention for doing that... Host: It's not weird, it's good. It's good she gets attention and it's bad that her action is seen as something extraordinary.
It is extraordinarily because the person who needed help was so very vulnerable, and it is more extraordinarily still it was a beautiful child with the skill set to help this very vulnerable adult. Usually it would be an adult. Think of it like a beautiful sunset. You should stop and admire it even if the sun sets everyday. Each sunset is extraordinary, as is each act of human kindness. Human kindness is all around us and if we don't see it then we can create it ourselves. You don't have to wait till you see a deaf and blind man, you can just be kind to a McDonald's employee or call your grandmother.

Can one feel lonely without experiencing other humans though? Edit: not lonely as in the way he is but if someone was locked alone in a dark room since they were 1 day old would they feel lonely? I think they'd assume it as normal
@@KuzkayDev If you didnt eat(nourish the body) since day 1, would you feel hungry? Your logic assumes no. Same goes with feeding the soul. Thats why babys cry until someone hugs them. Edit: You can only get very skinny and therefore adapt and need less food. And this mans soul is skinny as a needle.
@@Fitratul By no means. Nourishment is a requirement to the human body, but loneliness is different. Loneliness is something mental, I could argue that in order to be lonely you must have experienced non loneliness because things which relate to mental constructs or knowing require knowledge, and knowledge is acquired, not inherent to the mind (or consciousness).
@@dudicorn6503 Let's look at it this way: In order to be on this world you have to be born. Meaning you had at least 9 months contact with another human (your mom). There is currently no way around that, meaning you can't nullify contact, some kind of social interaction and warmth. Now let's go further. How would you lock the test subject up? How big is the room? Are the walls painted? Is there a window? Is there any kind of sound the subject could hear, like noises from outside? Let's say no to all of these. The subject is in a room, similar to a padded cell and never saw a human being before, however it heard the voice of its mother, while still being in the uterus and it was born in a natural way. Without contact to humans, the subject would never learn to talk, walk, eat. And that's another factor: How do you feed the subject? It will never learn to cook without human contact so you need to provide food, meaning there will be contact again. I doubt there is actually a way to bring a human onto the world while also denying them all kinds of human interaction whatsoever. That human will eventually see that there are other humans and therfore feel lonely.
She needs to give herself more credit. Because that is not something everyone else would have done. That is the action of a truly good person with compassion and love. CLARA YOU ROCK!!!
I mean... Whenever you help others you lose out on the opportunity that not helping would have given you. In this case what she lost out on was part of the time of a flight... Not exactly a high cost for her. I think most (if not all) people would have helped in her situation. The remarkable part of the story is that she had the SKILLS to do it. Had I been in her situatiion and had the skills I would have helped on the flight. But if you asked me to donate my time on a regular basis to help people like him I would be less inclined to do it, because the cost to me would be higher.
I learned the ASL hand gestures for the alphabet when I was a kid. I did it for fun, and signed a few words for fun with my siblings. But we only did it during one long, hot summer. It has been decades since that time, and I've forgotten most of the gestures. It isn't hard to relearn it.
Jesus Christ loves you !!! So much that he took up the cross and died for our sins. See I was once lost, pretending to be happy but dying inside, smoking to forget the feeling of emptiness I felt within. As I ran a long with the world , denying what Jesus did on that cross. nevertheless his grace and mercy reached me one day when I was on the verge of taking my life. He gave me a new name, opened up my eyes and changed my whole entire life. Never was I the same again. And he can do that with you as well. Just let him inside your heart. What a great girl. If she isn't being humble it would be sad to think that she is naive enough to think that this is something that "anyone would do," sadly that isn't the case. She deserves the praise she is getting.
haha i couldn't even talk to my classmates at that age for an hour, let alone a stranger 😂 But when i was younger, in elementary school, i always went to a fence with a big dog that liked me to pet him. one day an old man with a cane came by on a stroll and started talking to me about the dog. I kept going there over and over again to pet the dog and talk to the old man for easily an hour or more. Turns out the man was a world war 2 veteran and was shot 5 times in total. He lived in the building right next to the one with the dog and always took a walk around the block. Such a great guy. One day he didn't turn up anymore sadly, i guess either he passed or his health deteriorated too much. Thanks that you made me think about this, the memories of that time make me happy :)
The proceeding decades would be better if more youth spent time with their elders. They seldom do anymore. The Western societies need our youth to humble themselves before the traditional wisdom of the ages as much as possible! It's a wonderful thing :)

I've 'chatted' with her a few times even though I am still a noob at ASL (the smile she had when she realized I knew ASL was priceless). One day I was looking for a travel size detergent and couldn't find it. I saw her next to me and got her attention. One of her coworkers tried to step in but stopped when he saw me signing to her. A customer said it was amazing. I looked at her and asked, "Why?" when I worked at McDonald's I had a deaf customer and she smiled when I signed my name and signed a bit with the order. I also currently have a deaf coworker who is helping me learn more.

I will say, I give so much props to my elementary school, Galatas Elementary School in the Woodlands, Texas, because in 2002 ish we would be sitting down in the gym waiting for our bus to be called, and the teachers would use that time to teach us the sign language alphabet. We did it every afternoon and I STILL, 20 years later remember 90% of it. Thank you
When my younger sister was born she had a lot of trouble with her ears, was constantly in and out of surgery with terrible ear infections. My mom was certain that she would end up losing her hearing so she spent years using Sesame Street books to teach me and my brother basic sign language so that, when the inevitable happened, we'd be able to communicate with her. Fortunately, my sister didn't lose her hearing, although she still has trouble with her ears and doesn't hear 100% normally, but you'd better believe that I still remember the majority of what I learned over 30 years ago.

Everyone is commenting how wonderful this young woman is, and she is, of course, but nobody is saying anything about the courage of someone making his way through his entire life both blind AND deaf . Can any of you even imagine how scary that must be? Going through life in total silence and total darkness.

We need sign language in school!!!! I really wanna learn it’s been years and I still don’t know how to learn the sign language I hope all schools over the world need this to teach at school because it’s an important language that u may find 2 knows of each 200 people
I want to learn it tbh, don't have the money for lessons tho
Zainab Abdulaziz I’ve been learning sign language for a few months and a really good website to learn is handspeak it’s free and has videos to show you how to sign it’s truly amazing and good luck in your journey
Most schools actually have it as a class

I’m actually taking an ASL class in school.
That is amazing. Blind and Deaf is a very lonely life. Yet this girl help him far more than she realizes. Human interaction is challenging. Bless this girl for knowing sign language and being willing to stay with him through out the flight.

Lovely, On-Duty Angel! Lovely! 🌈 🕊 🌈
Sounds like a wonderful and fun thing to do. If what you say is true, I salute to that. Have a good day. :)
Kudos to you for taking the time to do that.
You are freaking awesome
That is wonderful. Whenever I have surgery I have wanted the anesthesiologist to look me in the eye and it is like y'all are trained on how to look the patient right back in the eye with such understanding, humanity and gravitas. It is so reassuring and instantly builds a bond without words but going that extra step to learn a little bit of sign language was very kind and I am sure meant the world to her.
This young woman is a rare bird, she's every bit as beautiful inside as she is outside.

Times like this is why ASL should be accepted by colleges as a foreign language.
So sorry to say David B but it's ASL (American sign Language). ALS is Lou Garret's Disease, just FYI brother.
Michael Galey thanks, typo.
Every country has their own form of sign language. Rather than calling it a foreign language - how about calling it a second language?
blueraineee I know they do. I guess 2nd language sounds and makes more sense.
it is at my university
My gf took ASL 101 and 102 in college and the amount of people that she’s able to help and make an impact is amazing
I'd love it if sign language was taught in school as part of the core curriculum. I've used the very basic sign language I learned outside of school a lot more than the foreign languages I had to learn in school. Adding sign language as a core subject would be so empowering and inclusive for those who rely on it to communicate :)
Dang I really need to learn to at least finger spell
@@jessicataylor7174 wouldn't it be of more benefit to make Spanish or Mandarin mandatory? Many people actually use them. Punjabi has more practicality than sign. Urdu even.
@@xinpingdonohoe3978 How would learning Spanish, Mandarin or Punjabi help deaf people be included within their community?
i have a cousin that recently got her Masters in it from Gallaudet University. she has literally the same attitude as the young lady in the video. we're all quite proud of her.
She was a teen that could have easily said, "oh no. An old person. And even worse: he's both blind and deaf!". Thank God Almighty that this teen had one of the biggest hearts ever!
Clara: It's weird I'm getting so much attention for doing that...
Host: It's not weird, it's good.
It's good she gets attention and it's bad that her action is seen as something extraordinary.
It's seen that way only because the media paints it like that. I doubt anyone able to sign like she did would have refused helping him.
The story reflects how beneficial to learn sign language is to society. I’m sorry you missed that moral of the story and instead twisted it into a negative.
@@WarrenPuffet That and that it was beautiful that a child was the one with the skills to help this man. Human kindness is always worth stopping to admire.
I feel the same way, it is sad that it is an act of exceptionaliam to be decent to another human being
Depressing thought for the day: He's probably not been allowed to interact with anyone during the pandemic due to social distancing rules
You are right, oh my god, that is so sad!
Oh..... that is sad
Yeah, that is an awful thought and probably true. Sad.
@12B_15_Ashwini Baxla I think the person is trying to say that we’ve got the pandemic going on now so he must be somewhere and not being allowed to have contact with anyone so he must be lonely which is sad, we know this was 2 years ago but he’s still living around somewhere now.
At least where I live caretakers are exempt from certain regulations as many disabled people need different support and should get it regardless. :)
" He was lonely " that almost made me cry but definitely made me sad
She said anyone would have done it. I disagree, it takes someone with a good heart to want to help someone. What a fantastic lady, a great example to us all.
An exemplary young woman!
Imagine being alone in a dark room for 20 years. I would kinda feel lonely too. Poor guy.
Can one feel lonely without experiencing other humans though?
Edit: not lonely as in the way he is but if someone was locked alone in a dark room since they were 1 day old would they feel lonely? I think they'd assume it as normal
Interesting way to look at it, ive also thought about it like that
@@KuzkayDev If you didnt eat(nourish the body) since day 1, would you feel hungry?

She deserves the praise she is getting.
she's just humble, but *wishes* that were the case.
I don't think this young lady realizes just how much she did. And not just anyone would've done it. Wonderful young woman
That is how it should be, she just.. helped and didn't think it was a big thing, which makes it even bigger
This young woman knows the definition of "love thy neighbor", something that's lost on a lot of people today.
“He was just lonely and wanted to talk...they talked for an hour.” A teenager can talk to any random stranger for an hour easily! 😂💖💖
haha i couldn't even talk to my classmates at that age for an hour, let alone a stranger 😂
But when i was younger, in elementary school, i always went to a fence with a big dog that liked me to pet him. one day an old man with a cane came by on a stroll and started talking to me about the dog.

There is a deaf worker at my local Walmart (very sweet woman). I will say, I give so much props to my elementary school, Galatas Elementary School in the Woodlands, Texas, because in 2002 ish we would be sitting down in the gym waiting for our bus to be called, and the teachers would use that time to teach us the sign language alphabet. When my younger sister was born she had a lot of trouble with her ears, was constantly in and out of surgery with terrible ear infections.
