Unfortunately, there are businesses out there that don't train their employees properly on accessibility and communication. As Ryan said, that was a degrading experience, but you can't let it make you sad; you have to stay strong. If you face discrimination because of who you are, stay strong. Hopefully we can highlight how businesses should communicate with their customers, and encourage businesses to become more inclusive.

Hey everyone, I want to thank you all so much for the support. However, please refrain from *any unkind comments* towards the employees. This was not our intention. Our only intention of this video was meant to educate and spread a message of how deaf people might order if they enter your drive through so anyone can be prepared. Thank you all ❤️

The other day in my ASL class we learned about why people fake deafness. Sometimes they want to be a part of the Deaf community and other times they just pretend to be deaf to gain attention or sympathy.
It really sucks that these people thought that Ryan was faking his deafness even though they saw him sighting and exactly like you said, there is nothing to gain by pretending to be deaf in a drive through.

I was a customer service rep at a bank when a woman who was deaf came in to open an account. This was my first encounter with someone who was unable to hear. She had written on a piece of paper what she wanted, and handed it to me. I welcomed her to sit down as I started the account opening process. This was back in the late 90’s when everything was still mostly paper. I had no issue. I pulled out a stickie pad, and began asking questions. At the end of the encounter, we were both laughing at the number of stickies that were all over my desk. What s lovely person. It was memorable, because it was challenging but fun and we were both committed to finding a way to communicate, despite my awkward hand signals.

Honestly with the amount of people who mess with the drive thru employees and they usually hate their job.
And the probability of them ever encountering a deaf customer their entire time working there would be 0-1 their entire time there unless they have a regular one there.
So it’s no surprise they would assume that he would be faking it since I think it was the guy who came it when he’s just asking him to write it down. And remember they don’t know sign language so all the guy sees is him giving him a sign to write it down. And the girls saying he can’t hear you.
I’ve seen a video of a kid pretending to be deaf it got so many dislikes I think he deleted the video couple years ago and he gave them a paper to read and they took the order no questions asked and wrote back the amount.
But the second drive thru they went to they were saying he was faking it and he started laughing then he just sped out of the drive thru...
They did not have any other people in line either if it was empty so idk why the girl didn’t just write down the order it was there written down.

@@velvetmidnight9535 just because someone fakes a disability (whichis illegal), doesn't give anyone a right to assume all disabilities are fake. It's like if a white guy stole from a store; would it be morally correct for the owner of said store to be rude to all white guys because of it? No. Just because there are fake service dogs out there, does it give a right to businesses to refuse service to a disabeld person with a service dog? Federally, no. Because faking a disability, as well as faking a service dog is as illegal as impersonating a law enforcement officer.
And if they hate their job, they need to get a new one instead of taking it out on customers, especially disabled customers. There is no excuse for insulting someone apart from the person who is doing it is a disgusting person who should not be working with people in general.

That’s crazy, deaf ppl are one of the sweetest people out there. I love serving them in customer service cuz we are both smiling even tho I don’t know sign language I always will give them a paper and a pen and after they order I will write “you have a great day :)” it’s really not that hard to be nice

I think on a human level it's insane to treat anyone like this. Like I didn't have to LEARN how to treat my deaf patrons when I worked in a shop. They would do exactly what you do, and I'd write back. Easy. I figured out how to say thank you and would put a smiley on her receipt. It just takes NOTHINGGGGG to show the same respect and courtesy to anyone. We are all humans.

So cool to see a deaf person showing the reality of many people who live on a daily basis.
I'm deaf, I also want to add one more thing he said. It's true, we're used to it. Since we were children, we have lived in this type of situation, when I was little, I was very sad and felt lonely. But after a while, I started to realize that if I got sad because of people, I wouldn't live for the rest of my life. It's exactly like he said, if you feel sad because of people who treat you that way, you won't be happy. For this reason, I don't like interacting with hearing people because I always feel lonely. I love the deaf community, I feel happier 😊❤ Thanks to the deaf and sign language community, I don't feel down.

McDonald’s drive through restaurant has a system of taking orders and a window where they just give you food and take your payment
If they decided to take your orders they will basically have you wait there, make the shakes, give it to you holding back the people behind you, the people behind you ordered with the person talking so they probably already have their order ready.
This deaf couple standing there is holding up the line if they decide to walk to the ringer and load up the orders and make you the shake then bring it to you in the same window that would be basically just waiting over the counter kind of wait.

I immediately switched to sign (took 2 yrs in college... forgot a lot in the years between). But I tried to help her and she got what she needed. Afterward, my boss asked about my signing and asked why I didn't identify myself as bilingual... i answered, "Because the languages listed didn't include ASL, and there wasn't an option to input it manually."

I'm currently trying to learn ASL, specifically words and phrases related to retail, so I can help my customers better. In over a decade, I've only had one deaf customer (that I'm aware of), but I think about her all the time. She and her dad were the sweetest people, and taught me the signs for "Thank you" and "You're welcome". The way her face lit up when I spoke to her directly and then used the signs they taught me was something I will never forget. It just goes to show that you don't need to know ASL to have a good interaction and help people out - some kindness and understanding will do in a pinch.

William Brewer the brand holds the standards of who they hire. Along with this they hire people to reflect what their company is. If they nip this in the butt (like Starbucks did) then they’ll make an example of them and it will happen less. That’s why some companies have many incidents of situations like this happening and others have little to none.

@@kayleew.4453 I dont think you realize that the CEO of mcdonalds isnt hiring the employees. There are managers that go unchecked and employees that arent truthful about their work ethic. McDonalds as a corporation probably wont support this because not every mcdonalds is what the corporation wants/ needs it to be.

I did enjoy it. I worked service as a young person and I've seen the other side of what's going on, and it was really informative to see your perspective. I think that accessibility should be mandatory and enforced with any company/business working with the public. These workers need to be trained and be given tools to work with all customers and make the whole experience efficient and positive for all persons involved, but especially the customer. Thank you both.

I am a hearing person. I learned basic sign to be able to work with a child in a group home. Thank you for sharing this with the world. I am surprised how much I remember and the desire to learn again and become fluent is strong. Thank you to you both. If I could I would give Java a puppaccino.

When my granddaughter was 16, she worked for Brahms Ice Cream Store in the drive through. A deaf person would come through and write down their order. My granddaughter wanted so desperately to talk to this person so she took it upon herself to learn just enough ASL to communicate with the person who frequented the store. On the day the person returned, my granddaughter spoke in ASL and the person was so excited they cried.
Later, my granddaughter received a raise and promotion because the person wrote management and told of the effort she had put in to communicate with them.
I was so proud of her!

Oh my goodness, that was awful customer service by any standard one cares to judge it. Thank goodness for the nice guy who did his best - I think that is encouraging, because it shows that even when some people aren't as helpful as they could be, others can still do their best to do the best they can for you. I haven't watched the 1 year later video, but I hope that the experience of this one encouraged everyone there to be more accomodating of disabilities than they had been.
