I had a deaf customer who was a regular back when I worked at ALDI. She would use her phone if she ever needed help but it was few and far between (I imagine because she didn’t want to be a “bother”)and it just didn’t sit right with me. I spent months learning extensive sign language both from videos, classes, and people I met through those resources so that I was as conversational in my ASL as I could be. The way her face lit up the day she walked in and I signed a simple “hello” will stay with me forever, it only got better when I started asking about her day and stopped several times to make small talk about groceries and the weather. After that we conversed every time she came in. By far the most useful skill I’ve learned as an adult. Communication should never have such easy to break barriers left untouched.
As an interpreter for the Deaf, I THANK YOU for learning & expanding your knowledge & your heart. Continue to learn ASL. You’d be surprised how handy it comes in.
Aww that's awesome I'm glad you made that connection with her and took the time to learn sign language for her. I know this guys an actor and he's just asking but I kept thinking to myself "he needs to learn manners and how to talk to people like that" I wish I found the time to learn sign language because you never know when someone could be deaf or not and cool name
I don't know. I'm a bit ambivalent. Lovely to see her engagement and she does all the right things. Apart from... As a professor of communication skills, she's not... she should take some classes in that. Had she not brought it up as an argument against the "server" (actor/"server") I couldn't have cared less. Had she mentioned that was her job, after the reveal, I would have thought she was a great professor. But as she brought it up the way she did, that's not a good way to communicate with people. I don't think anyone has to tell her why, considering that she's a professor in communication.
imagine being an actor and pretending to be a horrible person and then someone agrees with you...idk how i’d stay in character EDIT: y’all i’m aware that is why they are actors. i’m just saying i have a huge respect for them because i could never do what they do.

I had to take an order of a deaf person before. He let me know he was deaf. He showed me his order on his phone. When it came to asking him what he wanted to drink. I asked by grabbing a cup and pointing to the different drinks and he picked one. It was as simple as that and he got the food out. It’s not that hard to take the order of someone who is deaf even if you don’t understand sign language .
I work in Retail. Had a customer show me his phone looking for shaving lotion of some kind. We didn't carry it. I googled it on my phone to show him where he could find it. Always talk to their face. Talk normal. Many deaf people can read lips. Important words I know, chocolate, coffee(very important words for me), mom, dad, boy, girl, pink(because if you do it wrong it's penis), bull $hi7(because sometimes you have to call someone out), and church.
I've been there and loved every moment of it too. It's why they will always come back to those that try to understand, why talk when you can use body language LOL
I work in customer service, and my first job after highschool I was a cashier, a deaf customer came through my line and because I took ASL, I was able to help them, and they kept coming back through my line. It made me happy to know that I could help someone, and I tear up watching this because of how people stood up. Faith in humanity is slowly being restored.

I hope the third lady knows that its not about whether the deaf guy is well prepared with paper and pen or not but its the ATTITUDE of the waiter towards him ( she even glared at the deaf guy when he kindly returned the pen to her ... omg so mean 👀)
When I worked in customer service, I’ve found that deaf people are usually the kindest and most patient customers. And are always thankful when we can accommodate. It’s horrible that there really are people out there who would dismiss them over a disability
Agreed, I had a deaf couple that would come in when I worked at panera. The wife got impatient with me at first but the husband calmed her. I ended up being able to communicate via phone typing and as they became regulars I looked up some ASL and learned how to do formal greetings and I was able to learn how to sign “Your usual?” They tipped me $100 one time haha
Ikr it might not seem like it but deaf or blind people are seriously some of the kindest people out there and they deserve respect just like everybody else you should never discriminate because you never know what people are going through and you can easily communicate with them if you try and pretty name I have some friends named Marissa and you're so gorgeous

I was a server for a while and I would often think of this video during my shifts. I served autistic people, people who couldn't speak English, little people, the elderly, the deaf, and so on. I truly believe I did well as a server because of this video, it reminded me of treating everyone as well as I could. Thank you WWYD
I'm glad I at least know most of the alphabet because I feel I can at least spell things out if someone needs help with something. I began learning after I had someone in my beauty school class who was deaf and mute and I felt like it could help for me to learn a few things
As a person who is nearly 70% deaf it means a lot to me that I could read how someone was standing up for another deaf person. We truly are treated unfairly and can feel ashamed and broken because of it.
When I worked at a restaurant, I had a deaf couple come in. They wrote down their order. Plus, I knew a little sign language so I could communicate with them that way, too. I also learned two more signs that day: enjoy and fried.
Sadly I think it's a generational thing. Just like older people are often clueless about modern technology (which she also seemed to be, LOL), some are also ignorant and less sensitive about special needs. She might've grown up - or worse, been raised - with the perception that deaf people are somehow mentally challenged. I'm not defending or making excuses for her behavior, but trust me, she's not the only senior out there who would have that reaction. My late father was born left-handed and grew up in the 1940s and, believe it or not, his teachers in school tried to force him to write right-handed ! Why? Because left was considered "evil". INSANE by today's standards, but true. 😫 It gave him ambidextrous ability to a degree, but when he went back to writing fully lefty, his penmanship was degraded. The world was a much more ignorant place only a couple generations ago...
What was rude about it? He should be prepared. If I were deaf I would make sure to have a pen and a pad to be able to communicate with people. What if his phone died? Now what?
@killall humanmales bruh how do u ask a deaf guy to leave ??? He is deaf !!! may be u r right. Could be he thought it was a prank. But cud suggest anything else he did to suggest it was a prank ?? Like no magic trick, no stupid costume , no sound effect etc.
When I was in 6th grade a deaf girl joined the gymnastics class i was in. The other girls were rude to her or ignored her maybe because they didn't know how to act around someone who was different. The very day after I met her I went to the school library and asked for any books they had about sign language. I taught myself as much as I could from the limited selection and did my best to have conversations with her. I wish I had a picture of her eyes lighting up over a peer trying to learn her language to befriend her. Her giggles at my struggles with contorting my hands in attempt. And her confused looks when I'd get a sign completely wrong, then showing me the correct sign when she'd figure out what I was meaning to say 💜
Aww that's awesome I wish I took the time to learn sign language so I could do that in public and show positivity to people like that and pretty name I have a few friends named Emily and one of my best friends name is Emily and cool last name my elementary schools best friends name is Kelly
I was Born Deaf it's frustrating sometimes like 99% of the time when someone doesn't understand or have compassion but unfortunately we live in a world of ignorance
There's laws against discrimination? are you stupid? "The law requires an employer to provide reasonable accommodation to an employee or customer with a disability,"
Lincoln they’re talking about the bit at the start, that the episode is based off of. the employee is the one threatening to call 911, not the deaf person.
a restaurant has the right to refuse to serve you if they want. so if you don't leave, they can call the police to make you leave. it's mostly used for customers who are being annoying and assholes, but some restaurants use it when there's no absolute reason to use it (like in the Taco Bell case).
Yeah, and what about the waiter who’s actual job is to take orders? She told the waiter that it’s “not his job” when that’s exactly what a waiter is supposed to do. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the standard, “I tell you and you write it down” form, but even if a deaf person is pointing to a dish then it still is the waiters job to write it down. That old lady got on my nerves saying it’s not his job acting as if it takes up so much time to read the name of a food.
I don’t don’t agree fully with what she was saying but I mean she was just saying to have a pen at the ready because some people get nervous and don’t know how to handle the situation, it’s not that she had no respect it’s just that she maybe could have had a better tone
I disagree with you... I feel as if she was in the right direction. She just thought a bit differently about it with the pen and paper. I hope she does a better thing in the future.
Couch gaming news how is it not the waiters job to adhere to a customer? deaf people know how to communicate with abled people simply by pointing or gesturing what they want if the server doesn’t know sign language. all it takes is patience which rlly u should have for any customer
I work at Taco Bell, and when I first started working, there was a man and his wife who were both deaf. I took note that they probably couldn't hear, and did my best to help them get everything they needed. They've returned multiple times after that day, and I was happy to see them everytime. It isn't hard to be considerate. It really isn't.
@@savagejack5714 Humans are known to have voices but alot of time deaf can communicate by mocking what the person is saying, the sound may not be the same as the word but we often try and copy the structure of the sounds with muscle memory when touching vocal cords to feel the vibration to mimic the noise. I myself was born deaf at birth then had several surgeries and 3 ear drum replacement with artificial ones to be able to hear with hearing aids, I grew up 7 years with speech therapist to talk like I do now. Deaf and HOH (hard of hearing) can speak with patience and time, Marlee Matlin, Linda Bove, Nyle DiMarco, Russell Harvard, Millicent Simmonds are most popular deaf actor that can talk and yet are unable to hear. Human body is very amazing and continues to be amazing.
You sound like a really kind person, if the couple found the restraunt's environment, and especially you, comfortable to come again. As the video said, its hard to find a place without discrimination for what you have or what you are. I find that when a person that's unique finds a good place, they feel appreciated and equal. Thank you for making a Taco Bell one of those places. Stay how you are, please.

I love that you still hired a deaf actor when you usually rely on earpieces. Shows a lot of character when it would have been an easy out to hire someone who isn’t deaf. Love that
they usually tend to hire actors that fit the character (e.g. they hire lesbian actors for a lesbian scenario, and they’ve hired a blind person for a scenario involving a blind man). it’s lovely, and it’s amazing that they do it :)
I worked at McDonald’s for 4 years, and dealt with quite a few deaf people. Every time, I was patient, and grabbed pieces of paper and a pen. I made sure that they had a proper experience, because they deserved the same experience everyone else has.
I met a deaf man in the drive thru of McDonald's during my shift and I was so excited to help him and be able to use some of the signs I practiced I've been moved by asl since I first watched 'switched at birth' and it's so great to see people helping the actor
Allana Pereira people who’ve been deaf from birth can’t speak because they’ve never heard words so they wouldn’t know how to pronounce them.Think about it,we learnt words from listening to adults around us speaking and then we copied but hey can’t do that
Misaka Rie I know I bet it can be emotionally draining for them, having people be so angry with them.🙈 But hey that’s their talent and a lot of them are good at it!
If people hate or get mad to villains then that means those villains are really good actors, there was once an actor he was playing as villain, and a random guy punched him because he hates him and also because he's a villain, but that actor didn't fight with him, actor said to cameramans " I'm really happy because people hates me" and that means he's so good at acting as villain.
My fathers family were all deaf and because of people like this waiter they stayed housebound..I have always believed sign language should be taught in all schools. It's a beautiful language and an easy way for people with different languages being able to communicate as well
my childhood best friend is deaf. it makes my heart melt knowing that there’s kind and caring people who stand up for deaf people. my friend told me several stories about the times she was discriminated. i always cried and wished i was there to defend her. The worst thing is when parents don’t educate their kids to be patient and kind to those who have disabilities. i wish everyone could be as caring as the people in this video.
Ok but she did state a point they should have pen and paper or phone but if they don't people still have to be nice and patient! Usually people have phones or somewhere to write so they and others don't have a hard time! *This is why schools should teach us sing language and not other things like poetry or algebra that I won't use in my life* Edit: I mean other people like learning them but I don't and since I won't use it later in my life why should I learn it?!
The customer who said that they agreed that deaf people should travel with someone is absolutely insane. Deaf people can point to what they want. They can type what they want in there phone. They can write it down. There are even more ways that deaf people could communicate. It's honestly disappointing
I worked at a restaurant and two deaf woman would regularly come in with their orders written down and set it on the end of the table. A lot of servers would just take it and put in their order without acknowledging them. I learned a few phrases in ASL so I could do my job and make sure they were doing ok. The first time I asked them if they wanted more water it was like I was the only person to ever make an effort. It was so disgusting how much people wouldn’t interact with them and then complain about how they came in all the time and never tipped.
Someone should at least meet the deaf person halfway and TRY to communicate with him as best as possible. Deaf people already are doing what they can on their end.
@@katherine5797 Like, not even make eye contact? I couldn't imagine treating someone like that. Any of my customers that were deaf or mute I'd try whatever I could to communicate with them; even if it's pointing or writing down. Granted, I can't sign, but I at least ask if I read it right. Most can read lips and if not, I can point as I try to confirm it. It just seems so rude to not even acknowledge a customer. A simple "Hi, I'm your waitress today. I see you have your order ready I'll put that right in and have your drinks soon." would've moved mountains instead of outright ignoring.
Yeah like I used to work with a deaf man. Him and I communicate with each other well and I barely know any sign language except letters. Him n I become friends at work.

It gave him ambidextrous ability to a degree, but when he went back to writing fully lefty, his penmanship was degraded.

I met a deaf man in the drive thru of McDonald's during my shift and I was so excited to help him and be able to use some of the signs I practiced I've been moved by asl since I first watched 'switched at birth' and it's so great to see people helping the actor
Broo deaf people are so cool HE EVEN LAUGHED WITHOUT MAKING NOISE LIKE LAUGHING IN SIGN LANGUAGE 🥳😱🤯
When?
He probably has a problem with his vocal cords, because most deaf people do have voice!
Im half deaf
Tom Cool!
Allana Pereira people who’ve been deaf from birth can’t speak because they’ve never heard words so they wouldn’t know how to pronounce them.Think about it,we learnt words from listening to adults around us speaking and then we copied but hey can’t do that
Poor actors who are playing the villain. They get berated everytime. They might just be acting, but damn it still gets to you a bit y'know
One guy got beat up
Misaka Rie I know I bet it can be emotionally draining for them, having people be so angry with them.🙈
But hey that’s their talent and a lot of them are good at it!
CaliHustlah916 u a villain but u ain’t acting
@CaliHustlah916 Who are you to tell her what to do? we think you should shut up instead^^
That lady with gray hair is evil. She was condescending too.
She isn't evil, she is Christian.
@@helius661
Christians can be evil you know that right?
Or were you joking because it's hard to tell.
@@animationdramanation5730 glad you got my point. I was just being sarcastic.
@@helius661
Oh okay. Sorry I'm not good with telling the difference between a joke and serious.
@@animationdramanation5730 Same
My fathers family were all deaf and because of people like this waiter they stayed housebound..I have always believed sign language should be taught in all schools. It's a beautiful language and an easy way for people with different languages being able to communicate as well
waiter: “im busy i have lots of things to do”
iconic woman: “so do we all, boo boo” HAHAHAHAHAHA YAS I STAN
She atchelly said "so do we all, boo hoo" but we still stan 😂
oml i read it at the same time i read this lol.

I cant with this comment- XD
my childhood best friend is deaf. it makes my heart melt knowing that there’s kind and caring people who stand up for deaf people. my friend told me several stories about the times she was discriminated. i always cried and wished i was there to defend her. The worst thing is when parents don’t educate their kids to be patient and kind to those who have disabilities. i wish everyone could be as caring as the people in this video.
the woman who agreed with the waiter... yeah, sis.. ursula left the chat.
The *karen* who agreed with the waiter
Dont compare that slime to our queen Ursula
That lady is such a parasite. People have compassion, parasites leech off others and are only care about themselves and think they know everything
Ok but she did state a point they should have pen and paper or phone but if they don't people still have to be nice and patient! Usually people have phones or somewhere to write so they and others don't have a hard time!
*This is why schools should teach us sing language and not other things like poetry or algebra that I won't use in my life*
Edit: I mean other people like learning them but I don't and since I won't use it later in my life why should I learn it?!
The guy with red hair is kind of cute
“he should have a pen and pad so i can understand him” um aren’t waiters supposed to have a pen and pad to write down orders...
I thought that too 😂
The Deaf man had a phone as well though
ikr?? ahahha
Period. 👏
Ikrr
Kinda suprised Tracy didn't play as the waiter.
Ske 😂😂😂😂for real, Tracy plays a great bad character
Ske yeah true
Ske Tracy is famous lmao
Because she is too famous now :))) everybody is gonna regcognize her
Ske ya she’s usually the rude one
Good To See Nyle Doing This. He Looks Great And Is Always Helping The Deaf Community, Giving Back.
It's very simple to communicate with a deaf person. People just don't wanna put in the effort to do so. That lady need to bring a brush and brush her hair a little better. She looks like Andy Gibbs. Like ur not in the 1970s lady smh.
When I worked at a gas station during college I had a deaf guy who would come in and buy smokes and coffee fairly regularly. When I first met him I was kind of confused but then he pulled out a little note pad and would write on it what he wanted. Eventually he would come in and write jokes and I’d write back. He was actually a really funny guy after getting to know him a bit, and very kind. There are certainly ways for deaf folks to get around in today’s world.
