- Whether it's asking them to lip read what someone's saying across a room or only showing an interest in how to sign swear words, here are some of the things not to say to a deaf person.

All I can think of as a person who can hear is "do people really hate subtitles that much?!" I have them on for everything just so I don't miss parts of the dialog.
Joshua Creel i mean in most parts of the world the subtitles are translations and it isnt distracting you need them to understand whats going on
i have adhd and subs help me focus
I think you can get used to it. I learned english mostly through watching movies with subtitles. In the beginning it did annoy me a bit but now I don't mind it at all.
Joshua Creel I never turn my subs off lol
Joshua Creel I find them useful when I can't really understand what the person is saying cause they're mumbling or I have to keep the volume down
"I'd Love to know what people were saying from the other side of the room, I'm really nosy as Fuck."

Same, but I can hear
Hanna G once at month or always?
Toasty McGriddle so you are not deaf
Hanna G wheeze😉
I'm not even deaf, but "Do we have to have the subtitles on?" triggered me so much.
I keep the subtitles on and I'm not hard of hearing, but modern TV is notorious for having really quiet dialogue and huge explosions within seconds of each other which is jarring for any ear. Accents are also difficult for me, especially if someone is speaking quickly.
I'm not deaf but i always have the subtitles on anyway lol
@Zoë Zurnamer Ikr, same for me. I’m not deaf either but english is not my native language and I honestly don’t get it. You don’t really feel you’re reading subs when you get used to it, why is it so hard for people to understand

I’m not deaf but I’m autistic and have problems with interpreting sensory detail so subtitles are great yo
Same here (for the not deaf part)! I have ADHD, so subtitles help a lot when I’m trying to process information more quickly
So So I also have ADHD too
My daughter loves subtitles to, and ask me to explain whats going on. I'm hearing inpared and it' just so funny when we watch telly.
Oh maybe that's why I always liked subtitles too. I'm not deaf, but I was recently diagnosed with autism and I'm still learning about the condition and how it affects me and others around me.
Autistic, and learning ASL has really helped me when I have trouble speaking. Sometimes I shut down and it's hard to speak, but using ASL not only helps me communicate, but can act as a form of stimming because it's giving my hands something to do so I'm not so overwhelmed.
This comment section is 99% people pointing out the "mistake" in the title.
Saying something to someone doesn't have to mean it's verbal, it's literally a synonym for communicate.
There's also a big mistake in the subtitles/captions/whatever you call them RUclips provides. Suddenly at about a minute in the video, all subtitles from RUclips from the beginning re-appeared, but now over the burned in captions from the video itself. Pity.
the girl with the red hair and checkered dress looks like a pin up! she's so beautiful!

the people who say “do we have to have the subtitles on?” clearly have never learned another language and stumbled across an accent you can’t understand for shit.
I'm american and got a box set of an Scottish series because I couldn't find it anywhere online. But there are no subtitles.
It's basically unwatchable.
Spencer Davis i mean i kinda get you. spanish is my first language and i’m from latin america. there are certain accents from spain that i have a hard time understanding because they’re just so different i may think its portuguese if it weren’t for the “s” sound. i still have the respect to try my best and not make them feel like shit cuz their accent is different
exactly!! i watch a lot of anime and korean dramas (im american with latin american heritage and from nyc so im used to being surrounded by multiple languages) and im so used to subtitles idk why ppl are so stupid with subtitles. maybe watch something other than your native language for once. i can guarantee you though that thats a very american mentality unfortunately. sometimes ill watch a movie ive watched so many times with subtitles only to realize that ive understood a line or a lyric in a disney movie song wrong for so many years!
@@iluvzurara2 Oh no, it happens in the Netherlands as well, trust me. I have been to friends were I would watch some movie and quickly someone would start complaining about the subtitles... But especially when characters in a movie or serie mention a brand, store or locally known commercial-slogan or whatever, you can get lost easily.
I got the dvd-boxset of Friends. Well, for me, as a Dutch guy, there are so many references to local commercials, brands, stores and what not that it's hard to follow along, thus subtitles are always on. I don't care what other people think.
Well, sometimes it is hard for some people to be deaf. I like my life as is but yes, it’s harder to be deaf in one ear. Sometimes I’m a bit just like “Why did I have to be deaf in only one ear? Can’t I just be either deaf in both ears or not deaf at all?!” But I live my life as is, being partially deaf. Some people think I’m lying as I go to a hearing school and don’t use hearing aids tho, it’s hard only depending on my left ear.

“Jessica kellgren-hayes”
Me: excuse her marriage?
Yeah, I noticed that too. Wonder what happened in the editing department with this video
i think this mightve been filmed before she and claud were married
Strangely, I forgot they were deaf. I was more focused on how expressive they were in signing and their emotions.
VallieMC C ikr it’s kinda fun watching them sign
The facial expressions is a big part of sign language, it's really fasinating
Me too
Same lol
I find it even more "draining" than normal social interraction if that makes sense
*"Are ur other senses heightened?" "Oh I am magical"* dude YES😂
I'd love the chance to take a sign language class again. It was one of the most important languages to me because I grew up meeting a lot of deaf children and wanted so badly to be able to talk to them. I was able to take it for 2 years when I first entered high school, but wasn't able to keep learning in that environment when I moved.
When I was in primary school there were 2 children (brother and sister, the sister being the oldest) who both could hear, but needed hearing-aides to be able to understand what people said. (this part is for everyone under 30, you have no idea how technology has advanced)
His devices incorporated possibilities for the now so common loop facilities but on a very small scale. In the daily 'circle-talk' in class (maybe that's something Dutch, I don't know), the person speaking had to be wearing a heavy box with lavalier mic, which would radio the sound to him, while he was wearing a similar box but then without the mic but the cord that held the box around your neck facilitating a loop so his aides could pick up the radio and he could hear what the person speaking was saying.
It was only a few years ago I realised deaf people probably don't take much joy in most videos as there are no subtitles and explanations of things going on in the video. Since then I just provide subtitles in two languages (Dutch, my native language, and English)
The same I'm still looking for a way to provide audio-transcription...
When people start talking to me slowly with exaggerated mouth movements: "I said I was deaf, not stupid!"
3:45
“Do we have to have the subtitles on?”
“Do we have to have the sound on?”
“Do you have to be here?”
I put the subtitles on and i'm not even deaf, they're useful for everyone and deaf people really need them.
@@ukulelesalt yeah same i always have them on
ukulelesalt I do too! Sometimes I don’t quite understand what was said so I look at the subtitles/captions.

Also, BSL and ASL are so stinking different and it's fascinating.
Holly Dorn so when I️ saw the one woman using two hands kissing as “A” I️ was so interested. Because in ASL, “A” is a fist(like black power fist) but with the thumb on top of the fingers. Lol weird.
Holly Dorn I know right! I’m learning a little ASL and I would notice simple signs suck please, are completely different
Even BSL, and SSE are really different
My dumb self was trying to understand than I realized they are in a totally different country 😂 I’m learning sign language maybe I’ll learn PSE and ASL but I love sign language and I feel that every school should teach kids sign language
Jayson Padilla the "2 hands kissing" was actually B😆 for the vowels, we point to a finger. So A is your thumb, E is your pointer finger, I is your middle finger and so on! But youre right, it is super interesting to look at the differences in sign language-i think theres more than 300 in the world?🤔

@I'm just saying it's okay man. English isn't my first language either. By 'senses heightened' they meant that since they have hearing disability, people think that they can see or smell better. One thing that some insensitive hearing people love to do is move their lips while not really talking to me. As if to test whether I am really deaf or not. And then when the “joke” is exposed they grin at me like I was in on it. And they don’t get why that would piss me off.

“You don’t look deaf”
I facepalmed when reading that. How the hell could someone “Look Deaf”?
Maybe they think deaf people have giant red X's over their ears or something
People just love to stereotype because it helps them "understand"
I'm deaf in my right ear; when people find out, the statement I hate the most is "you don't sound deaf." It's so rude and ignorant.
Paisley You don't 'sound' deaf?! That is hilarious! 😋
Bernadette Boyle yes, really funny. Super original joke; did you come up with that one yourself? 😜
One thing that always amazes me with deaf people is when they can articulate really good. It takes real dedication and hard practice to articulate without hearing the sounds coming out of your mouth. It's different for people who became deaf later in life (I think) but for people who were born deaf and are able to talk are the people I look up to. Always challenging themselves and succeeding in what they do, I could never...
I really couldn't live without music and I'm deaf I'm a deaf musician and dancer most of the stuff I love most have to do with music I may not be able to listen to a song and play it but give me sheet music and I'm good to go I have trained my body to listen to the music so well that I can even feel different notes played it's hard to explain that bit but trust me I can and it's easier with live music it's harder with recordings.
THINGS NOT TO DO TO A BLIND PERSON: Produce a video with nothing but background music, making it impossible to understand what the hell is going on.
NicE
Lmfao
NicE Yeah, they should've produced a transcript.
Was going to come and say the same thing. I hope they add a transcript.
Bucherviews NicE I can make one for you two here, and then make one for the rest of the comment section :)
Not only that, but the audio levels kept changing, that's infuriating for deaf people too. I'm hard of hearing and have Hyperacusis. I had to keep adjusting the volume level because I wanted to hear the people when they did speak but I had to turn the volume down when it cut to a title card because the music got way louder and it hurt my ears.
I am partially deaf and cannot stand the 'You should have listened then' or the 'listen more'. It's so frustrating!
Also when someone says something and you ask them to repeat it and they say 'it wasn't important'.
Then I never find out what they wanted to say and the CURIOSITY EATS ME ALIVE.
Oh my god! All this time, it's just been a phase?! Thank you, For Hinguerez, for enlightening me! I wish you'd told me sooner though. It would have saved all the trouble of going to constant audiology appointments since the age of 3 and having doctors shove weird telescopes down my ear. If I'd known my half-deafness was only temporary then maybe I could have skipped that operation I had 4 years ago when they drugged me and put grommets in my ear. Oh if only I'd known!
Smh.
WatermelonWaves034
Comeback of the year right there *claps* :D
*sips tea* oh girl, the shade XD
Also partially deaf and this is the bane of my existence! You could have used the time you were wasting to say "it wasn't important" to just repeat yourself. x.x
Ugh I'm the same as you I have hearing aids and I absolutely hate when people find out I'm hearing impaired and they whisper 'can you hear me' repeatedly getting quieter or covering their mouth and asking me. It's not like people would go up to a blind person how many fingers am I holding up. People are just so stupid smh

Do you really need the subtitles my husband asked me when we first got together. He doesn't question me now. Could never afford hearing aids. I hate when subtitles don't match what the person saying. Never was able to learn sign language growing up poor. I've scooted by, self taught to read lips using key sounds that I can hear to distinguish what was said. I'd say it worked out so far. I'm 32 and on a waiting list for hearing aids for the first time. I still can't imagine what it would be like to hear someone and have a normal conversation.
I’m not deaf and I still can’t watch a TV show without subtitles.. YOU NEED THE SUBTITLES PEOPLE

@@TheTyler701 Well, if you're turn deaf someday, it will help you.
Cake, biscuit, date, friend. You see, these are the important words in life.
Especially cake
thegayestgoth They really love their cake 🧁.
I know bubble and whatever in ASL because my friend has Aspergers and gets so overwhelmed sometimes she can’t talk or I get so overwhelmed from my emotions that I can’t (cptsd) but we sign each other back and forth when it gets that bad. The main ones I know are because those are our “leave me alone” words. Like when we need space. It’s the line in the sand and they are easy enough to sign that it doesn’t take a lot of energy to do them.
Hello how are you
Cake is the most amazing word.
Hey I'm not deaf and I love watching things with subtitles! Sometimes people are hard to understand how they talk and it helps to be able to read along. By the way I know some sign language and if I see a deaf person in public I'd love to say hi and help you communicate if you need help! 😁👍
Sign language is such an expressive language more than vocally speaking...so beautiful
I lost it when the awesome 50's pin-up girl said she has great gaydar. OMG I wanna meet her, lol
Her youtube is Jessica Kellgren-Fozzard and she has some really great videos. I'd really recogmend checking her out.
It’s funny because she is lesbian. I think that’s why she might have said that.
Juan Sandoval I am a lesbian too 😉 Now I really gotta meet her lol
lol she's married and has an awesome wife so didn't get your hopes up raerae1281
LOL, oh well... She's still hot.
“I have a really excellent gaydar.” Me too sis beep beep
the fact that she is gay SKSKSKS
The thing I hate the most is when someone finds out you're deaf and puts on that hateful compassionate face and says something like "Oh, I'm very sorry, I didn't knew that, you're so intelligent that you don't seem deaf!". Once I was in class and I got distracted for a second, so I asked my teacher to repeat the thing she had just said. And she rudely asked "Are you deaf?". She had said that multiple times to almost everyone in the class. I was so annoyed by that that I answered :"Yes, I am!". When she understood that I wasn't joking, that compassionate face came out and she suddenly was super sorry and started apologizing and talking to me like I was someone who had to be pitied by everyone. Sorry for my English, it's not my native language
Yes!! It’s so obvious people don’t realise how condescending they come across. It’s especially insulting when they use disability as an attack.
I just opened the video and i am amazed by the title. I wonder what else im gonna see throughout.
I'm learning ASL because there are a lot of deaf kids at my school. I don't like the fact that I can't easily talk to them because of something neither of us can control, so I thought I'd put some effort in to get to know them. ASL is actually super fun and my friends are helping learn a ton of words that I don't understand.
Jacketeer : our school offers ASL as one of the languages. My uncle is deaf so I was really excited to be able to take it.
I'd love to learn French Sign Language (it's pretty similar to ASL I think)
Jacketeer : how's that going??
its been 10 years since i took my first ASL class. now im a medical interpreter
Jacketeer : I am going to school for deaf education in order to teach sign language and help young deaf kids embrace their deaf cultures. I have taken sign language for all years in high school
"I have a really excellent gaydar"
She's great! Also love her dress and hair!
But is she gay? Cause I'll be really sad if she isn't, she's gorgeous ;)
She is! She's on youtube!
Baguette Gott her channel name is Jessica Kellgren-Fozard
she's gay!! (but married lol)
Baguette Gott Actually yes lol. But she's married...
Oh my god wow. It is honestly a privilege as a hearing woman to be introduced to such a beautiful community. You guys are amazing and I have so much respect for you this video made me very happy.
Weirdly enough, the people who weren't speaking and communicating through sign and body language, I could almost hear their voice. Like my mind filled in the "gaps" 😄🤔 . Loved this interview!
Heres what not to say

I mean, if you're talking to someone who's hard of hearing but not profoundly deaf, asking if they can hear you is relevant.
omg yes does my head in
I like watching movies with subtitles as a hearing person. It makes it easier to understand accents and if its loud you dont need to turn up your volume to hear.
Same! I can hear fine as well but subtitles make it easier for me to understand, especially when they're mumbling or whispering
Yep I have auditory processing issues (not deaf, but just cannot process sounds into words fast enough sometimes) and subtitles are a lifesaver. I was so happy when voiced computer games started adding subtitles in because I always felt kind of left out as a kid lol.
I can hear perfectly fine but I still always have always had the subtitles on just because it's easier to know what they are saying
@@redmanish Same here! I've always been very good at understanding visual information (subtitles, for example) but auditory information... doesn't compute well. I always have subtitles on, even as a hearing person.
same ... especially when I'm eating ... like if it's something crunchy you can't hear shit.
5:07 It would be harder for someone who’s had their hearing all their life and then suddenly lose it.
I'm not deaf or hard of hearing, but I do have an auditory processing problem, so subtitles help me immensely.
I'm learning ASL, however. I occasionally run into people in my work who are deaf or hard of hearing who know sign, and I want to be able to make them feel as welcome as anyone who is hearing. I am very self conscious about my signing, though.
I'm very slow and sometimes have to stop to think of the correct sign or where the sign should go in my sentence grammatically. I am also slow at stringing together the words (or spelled words) people sign to me, and I frequently have to ask them to repeat themselves or sign slower for me.
I'm worried my struggling through the communication while I'm still so new is more frustrating and cumbersome than inclusive or welcomming to my guests than just writing things down or letting them read my lips instead.
Is it impolite for me to do this until I'm more skilled at ASL?
And if I make mistakes, is it okay to ask for people to correct me?
Person: "Do we have to have the subtitles on?"
Deaf people:
"Do we have to have sound on?""Do u have to be here?"
WEEEZE
I'm deaf so I relate to this so damn much 😂😂
Karma Morris since you’re deaf could you answer a question? Can you hear your own thoughts?
Dylan ius I don’t know if it’s just me, but I find your comment quite confusing?
Holly Bramhall eh not really a simple question really
Dylan ius never mind I understand it now I commented at like 2 am 😂😂
wheeeze*
I'm not deaf, but I love subtitles. It helps me catch things that I sometimes miss without subtitles. I also like it when they describe sound effects oddly 😂
my sister is hearing and uses subtitles when watching tv or netflix because sometimes she misses out when the actor is talking too quiet or speaking in a heavy accent so she doesn't have to constantly rewind to catch what the actor is saying.
Me too!!
Jade Nguyen
SAME!
S A M E. The background music is either too loud or the actors just dont speak clearly enough for me to hear
Only one of my ears (? Works like it should so I prefer to put subtitles cause even though I’m fluent in English sometimes it gets hard to get what they say??
OMG Jessica you have the vintage look going on. I LOVE it . You're very pretty!
The lady at 1:35 who looks like a 1950's movie star is so inspiring when she talks about feeling the musics vibration and does her little dance.
