There are certain things that you really shouldn't say to a blind person - and others that you might be surprised to find are completely acceptable.

I had a girl do that to me, and when I said the correct number of fingers she held up she told me, "Oh your vision isn't that bad then!". Because that's totally what they do at the optician
Ameah Callender I'm legally blind and it is so annoying bc when someone finds out or remembers they take my glasses and start doing that and I get put in a very uncomfortable position bc I can see their hand but nothing else and it's kinda scary when suddenly you can't see very well bc they took the only thing that helps you see.

Years ago my younger sister had a very good friend who was born blind.. she had 100% sight loss, she could just about tell if someone shone a light in her face but she couldn't see shapes, shadows, colours etc.. She went to a boarding school from an early age and was totally independent. She used to come to our house for sleepovers and loved movies. We would watch the same one over and over and for the first time we ran the movie me and my sister would describe what was happening.
She would always used terms like "I've seen that one" or "Can we watch a film?" She'd never say.. "I've heard that one.."
I've also had a couple of blind friends that have enough vision to get around fine in their own homes...
that was so interesting to read! people like her are really inspiring

i think what people mean by "you don't look blind" is that you don't behave like you can't see. you move your eyes, your head, use gestures and all that, blind people in movies usually stand still.
common sense is not so common...
it really bugs me how blind people are portrayed in movies. Please, for the sake of every blind or visually impaired person I know or don't know Please don't believe anything they say about blind people in movies. It's insulting.

If a person's been blind all their lives, it's scary to think of what life would be like if they could see.
Hannah Rose there's a wonderful documentary about a doctor who went to North Korea to do surgery on the people there with severe cataracts that render them completely blind and though their reactions we strangely connected to their leader you could tell how elated they were to see their mother or father or their child or granddaughter, I'm sure it's very scary at first but I'm sure it's also a wonderful feeling to see the beautiful colors of the world!

i seen a documentary on PBS when they cured this guy from blindness only to screw him over. He freaked out about how things work. For eg he was riding in a car and got scared when they were passing a sign and he thought that it was gonna hit them. Gosh that show was interesting.

I never actually saw any of my family members faces it is sad and I sometimes cry because my eye doctors told me that there is no cure for my eye condition sometimes I cry thinking about it and I wish I knew what it was like to be able to see I have retinopathy of prematurity stage five and apparently there is no cure for that I can’t see lights shadows colors nothing

Blushem i’m not saying we aren’t capable of doing anything but I think that a lot of the blind community is really focused on how we’re strong and independent that we forget that there’s people like me in the world who agrees but at the same time doesn’t feel the same way sometimes Molly Burke is a prime example of that she spoke about a very horrible accident where she could’ve lost her life again we are way too focused on seeing ourselves as strong and independent that we tend to forget that in a lot of situations we can become the most vulnerable please don’t hate me I’m just saying that this is what a lot of people seem to forget because we think we can do it all but unfortunately that’s not the case all the time

Blind people must fall in love based off of personality. Which is amazing and wonderful to be.
I was just thinking of this it's amazing bc if a blind person falls in love with you it must mean either you have an amazing personality or they really love you for your personality and you can always be sure of that ♡
Actually you are right, but there's still the voice ... I once had a crush on a singer (I'm blind since my birth) and I knew nothing about his personality :D But yes, apart from the voice, the personality is the most important thing.
I can only imagine what it's like to be loved from that level.

For the comment "So you CAN see" automatically reminds me of one of my Tae Kwan Do instructors. She is legally blind, but does that automatically mean she can't see crap? Of course not! She's at the highest level of black belt and she watches us to see if we aren't doing our kicks properly or not punching hard enough. She can still see, but her vision is bad enough where it can be a little difficult and she can't drive (stuff like that). But seriously, if someone is legally blind, that does not mean they can't see anything! I mean, sure, there are people that can see literally nothing, but that is not always the case!

My friend was totally like this!! Good on her and him for just getting on with life, generally speaking some people just plain stupid 😒 he could not drive but managed (by working super hard at) getting several black belts! I once worked in a factory predominantly employed with blind people. As a male with a dozen piercings in my head, I'm usually judged as a scary ruffian before I've ever spoken, but for once in my life I was judged solely on the way I treated people, instead of how I look, and that was something special that I've never experienced anywhere else.

When I was about 12 I was at my mums friends little boy’s birthday party and I started talking to this woman who was blind. I knew she was blind but after about 10 minutes or so of talking to her I kind of forgot. When the little boy was opening one of his presents I thought it was really cool so I said to the woman “oh my God look at that” 🤦🏻♀️ then I remembered that she was blind. She just giggled & said that it was ok and I apologised but I was so embarrassed for ages. 😂
I can't walk properly, and the other day I became tearful when I saw a beautiful field and hill local to me, because I knew I wouldn't be able to walk across and climb up them. Then I realised how lucky I was to be able to at least see them, and it made me feel better. My question is, is that in any way patronising or insulting to blind people? I genuinely want to know, because I hadn't considered it before now.
NotMostGirls I personally feel like it depends on the person and if they decide to be offended about it. My fiance is blind and we have had this conversation, he says it's similar to someone saying "at least I can walk" or "at least I can hear." you choose if you are offended or if it's derogatory. That's just our outlook on it, I dunno about anyone else but I think it's alright if you mean well and don't mean to be derogatory to anyone. In this sort of context, anyway.
NotMostGirls I don't find it insulting. Sometimes I've very happy I can't see things. Especially people. Like when I'm mad at my partner and in an argument I feel vulnerable and am glad I can't see him because then I don't register how he sees me.
Hatter 9514 Thank you for replying. I understand what you mean. I hadn't considered the 'at least I can walk' angle until now as I only became disabled relatively recently, but it's made me think. I wonder what my reaction to that specifically will be when I hear it now as a wheelchair user. I suppose it's all about perspective and personal experience.
OrgaOrgaOrga Thank you for sharing your experiences. I get what you're saying. I have actually remarked before that society would be kinder without the gift of vision; so many people use it to prejudge. I myself would not be treated differently or badly by those with sight loss based upon my own physical issues. No one could judge me on my body if they couldn't see it. It's something I think about quite often. My partner is partially sighted in one eye and sometimes I wish I could give him the vision from one of mine as I am housebound and waste my eyesight sitting in one room all day every day.

Legally blind person here. We are more than capable of using computers and phones. Just because you see some of us "looking" at things it doesn't mean we see what you see. Some of us are capable of seeing shadows or blurs of color and some of us with hearing hear quite well. So when we look in the direction of a person or object doesn't mean we are lying about not being able to see. Should we just keep our heads still and eyes closed? I turn my head when I hear something move or to speak in the direction of the person talking to me. Seems polite to do so.

Genuine question here, just curious--do some blind people have keyboards with raised letter engravings? I'm sure that might be one way for someone to type even if they couldn't see at all. Or perhaps a braille keyboard might be a better thought
One of my favorite memories from childhood was going shopping with a friend who was blind and describing all of the clothes to her. It helped me better empathize with people who love shopping.

My blind cousin can tell the difference between light and dark like she can tell whether the lights are on or off but she can't see anything else

I'm also blind since my birth and can agree totally on some poinqs. For example "see you later - Oh, I'm sorry!" - for me it's not necessary to avoid any vocabulary.
But when it comes to questions like "are your senses hightened?" and so on, I want to say (to all the blind people here): Don't judge the sighted people for asking that! Many of them haven't talked to a blind person yet, so they can just imagine how a daily life with a disability is. In their head there sometimes appears a picture of a "typical blind person": cane, guide dog, sometimes closed eyes, hears, smells and feels ererything, is sad because of the disability, has mental issues ... and so on. BUT they only think that because they haven't met other types of blind people yet! Just have patience and be nice, I think - no one means to insult you with such a question, often people are just curious!
And this is for you, sighted people: Often prejudices aren't right, so try to be openminded and also be willing to change your typical pictur of the blind. If you have any questions about blindness, you can ask them by replying to my comment, if you want. I'll try to answer them :)

I had a blind tutor for math when I was 13, the best tutor I've had ever, not only did he teach me how Braille works, he gave me a paper with my name written in Braille. He said just because your blind doesn't stop you from doing what you want so he became a math tutor, he was an inspiration to me and he gave the the sense of "just because you have a disability like mine doesn't mean you can't do anything"

my ex boyfriend's dad is blind and he was so funny, he made blind jokes all the time and allowed us to make them with him. and he would scare the shit out of people because he is ex military. He also does triathlons and hikes and he is basically a super hero. Like he does more than a person with perfect vision.
Even just with short sightedness I'd choose to magically cure it if I was given the option, just because it's more convenient to have perfect sight

Last one is totally true, notorious! Even nicknamed her "The Thumb" even before she lost her vision.
I am completely blind not everyone who is blind is completely blind only about 15% of the blind community is completely blind but in my case I can’t see lights shadows colors basically anything but you can have a favorite color it all depends on thinking how that color makes you feel I hope I’m making sense
Okay, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 11 are perfectly acceptable, they're just conversation. I would feel like they wouldn't want to talk to me if they didn't say these things if I was blind.
I have a younger relative who's father is blind. The first time I met him was at a funeral of another relative. I didn't realize it at first because I was sitting a couple rows behind them when my younger relative helped his dad to the piano that was next to the open coffin. The dad sat at the piano and performed "What a Wonderful World" on it. It made me want to cry even more because not only was this at a funeral, but this man just proved he can do what some other people claim he can't do due to the fact that he's blind.
God bless these people; they are amazing people.
They are ordinary people with a great sense of humor. I guarantee you they don't consider themselves amazing because they do ordinary things like evderyone else. There's nothing wrong with them. Generally speaking, it's the rest of the world that has a problem. Do people make a big eal of it when you write a check at the checkout stand when buying something? It's all about perspective. I am a Christian, but I am thoroughly tired of people wanting to pray my eyes are healed. What's wrong with my eyes. I have beautiul eyes. People are forever telling me that.
People often tell me it's amazing that I don't let my disability stop me. My disability has NEVER stopped me. The world has, when I let it.

One thing I've noticed about being disabled is people trying to catch you out, like prove your lying. I have dentinogenisis imperfecta, a genetic tooth disorder but for some reason it's also associated with hearing loss, which I am now experiencing. I have ankolosing spondylitis too, I've had people, family and friends even, saying look you walked x distance or carried x items so you can't be that disabled or in pain. I also have ADHD and potentially autism, I have had people say they think my diagnosis is a mistake because they expect those with ADHD to be always hyperactive, and they don't believe someone like me is autistic

In highschool one of my classmates was blind and I think we really helped her coming out of her little perfect world set up by her parents. She did not have a stick and was forced to walk from the class to the toilette touching the wall with her hands just because her parents didn't want her look blind. She didn't even know that you used teabags to make tea! I mean her parents were shaping a too much accessible world for her but with time she became much more confident. She has an MSc in Languages now and sometimes works in an art school.

I’m visually impaired and the fist day they signed off on my cane when a bully thought they could “prove that (I) was lying and could see” so ran at me from the side but he had squeaky shoes so when I jumped my cane hit him in the nuts 😂

I used to play in a band with a blind boy, so I used to hang out with him often, so I feel like I can relate to these things through him, haha. Especially that one with people being afraid of the word "see". My blind friend always uses the term himself, like "I watched a movie" etc. It's just like a figure of speech. It would sound horrible to say "I heard a movie". But other people don't realize that.
Once we were recording a song and the producer said something like "I want you all to sit so you can see each other" and one of our band members go "well, that's gonna be difficult". So we were like, joking about it, but the producer still acted as though he'd made the most horrible mistake in living memory.
Stop apologizing. It's only good that you sometimes forget that they're blind, because it means that you treat them like everyone else.
That's like being afraid to use the word "move" in the presence of someone who can't walk. If you want to know which words to use when talking to me, just listen to what I say. I use those "Sight verbs" all the time.

This reminds me of wearing glasses. My vision is 20/40 in one eye, 20/50 and a lazy eye in the other. I'm also farsighted. I can see perfectly fine without them and read and everything, but the moment my glasses are off. "HEY, HOW MANY FINGERS AM I HOLDING UP? OH YOU GOT IT RIGHT! CAN I TRY YOUR GLASSES ON?" "Um...I guess...don't break them..." "WOAH YOU'RE SO BLIND! WHY IS IT SO BLURRY?!" My thoughts: I don't freaking know! Other peoples glasses are blurry to me too! So why are you so stupid?

As a deaf/severely HOH person I actually laughed at this so lighten up people
I would treat blind people with respect just like I would with a normal person because they can do things like us, they just have a harder time with seeing things
An important thing to know is that most people don't intend to hurt or annoy with their questions, they are just awkward with words when they feel they have to say something. So this video is very important for people to understand each other and learn not what to say, but what not to say.

Izzy it's very hard being blind or low vision but it's definitely something that you can overcome and still be able to live a happy fulfilling life. no I'm sure being fully sighted would make my life easier, I think I would still be just as grateful for the things I have :)

I'm glad as a blind person that I don't just seem to look happy, but am actually happy? I'd say there are many of us who are.
One of my oldest friends has been visually impaired most of her life and all this stuff is so frustrating for me to witness let alone for her to experience! She is honestly one of the smartest and most beautiful people I know, she went to a special school in New Zealand to learn how to live independently. She now lives alone with her vision impaired boyfriend and guide dog and is studying business at university. Shes also a national champion in a sport called swish (blind table tennis).
I remember in Primary School frequently chasing kids half way around the school screaming that they would be dead if I caught them because they would stick their hands in her face saying "how many fingers am I holding up? huh?!" and she was so hurt by people doing that. Even after the school held sensitivity training for the kids so that they could empathise with her, some still did it (little shits!). There was even a time in late high school when someone found out I was friends with a visually impaired girl and they actually asked me if that meant I knew sign language!! they automatically assumed that cause she was blind she was also deaf and I had to communicate by signing in her hand. But even after all of that crap she has a heart of gold and just laughs at the idiots.

I'm legally blind. My vision has gotten worse and worse over the years and I've been told that it's not gonna get any better. Of course, when I tell people this, their first question is, "How many fingers am I holding up?" Or they assume that all I see is pitch black or something. Like, no, I can *_see,_* just not well.

I need the magnifier on the computer to be at 400 and the thing i get all the time is sitting at the library computer and the person next to me will say "Oh! did you know you have the magnifier turned on?" and then try to tell me how to turn it off. One time I actually said to someone "Oh! No wonder i could see the screen!"

I know a man named JD who takes public transport who is completely blind and has an awesome scence of humor every time I get off the bus he goes " See you later man" It dosent hit me for a minute the impact of what he said then suddenly I figure it out, turn and he has the biggest grin on his face I'm like "ahhhhhh good one JD" freaking hilarious every time.

Last encounter I had with a blind person, I was a bit cheeky. I saw them approaching, and stood perfectly still in the shade at the bus stop. They apologized for tapping me with their cane, and we struck up a good conversation after that. Laughs were had, and no - I didn't "help" them get on, nor exit the bus. No need.
They get so angry over these questions but surely this is the perfect platform to answer those questions and dispel the misconceptions so they don’t have to face them as much.
You would think so maybe, but you'd be surprised how much we face this stuff in the real world. Most people wouldn't have even known about this video, or many other channels that are made by blind/visually impaired people. And it's not something I can just shut off. I can choose not to answer questions or whatever, but it's always interesting when interacting with sighted people. Lol.

I work with a student who's autistic and what we'd refer to in the US as "legally blind" (meaning they still have vision but it's not much use), like the people in the video who are "registered blind." She can actually get around pretty well once she figures out a space but all she can really see are shapes, colors, and outlines.
I have autism and am registered blind. I'm glad that she has you to help her because I'm at university too and I have nobody to help me and it's been very hard.
