      @uh I mean, that's lucky. For me personally, I never feel it coming. It's always irregular and unpredictable. There are warning signs but, when it actually starts it always takes me by surprise. For some people periods really suck, and I can't imagine dealing with that blind. But I also do understand that it is a very inappropriate thing to ask someone though.

      As a girl completely blind not light perception or anything dealing with periods can be challenging but then again it is for every girl it’s not a big deal you are aware of when it’s happening also as a blind person you just learn how to do things how ever you feel like doing them

    • @HopeUnquenchable

      I find that using body language when explaining scoliosis is more effective than just saying, “It’s when the spine curves in a way it shouldn’t.” I draw an imaginary snakey line down my front to illustrate the direction the spine curves, and rarely does anyone say they think they have it, too ☝️

    • @xanderpatterson4729
      @xanderpatterson4729 4 года назад +2

      I’m actually worried I have it lmfao. Ik my spine isn’t straight, and never has been, but I’ve also never been actually tested for it lmao

    • @HopeUnquenchable
      @HopeUnquenchable 4 года назад +16

      Alexander Denver, a very simple preliminary testing can be done at home, if your parents or siblings (or even a friend you don’t mind seeing you with your shirt off) would be willing to assist you. You have to be shirtless, so they can clearly see your back, but they should stand in front of you, facing you as you bend straight forward to touch your toes (keep your feet together, with your knees slightly bent). Ask them to tell you if the top of your rounded back looks level, or if it appears higher/lower on one side. Hope that makes sense.
      If both sides of your back aren’t level with each other when you do this exercise, it’s likely you do have scoliosis and should see a specialist to confirm the condition and advise you on your options to manage/correct it☝️

    Idk about you or other blind people. By since I’m legally blind and can fake being sighted pretty well, anytime I tell someone I’m blind they tend to respond with “oh I’m blind too.”
    No. No. No. you have poor vision that gets corrected to average when you put in contacts. That’s different.

    • @sadcat3602
      @sadcat3602 5 лет назад +13

      My dad’s legally blind or at least he was when he was a kid and he prefers his contacts to his glasses. My eyesight is only slightly better so I’m not technically legally blind but I’m pretty damb close.

    • @copicgirl8057
      @copicgirl8057 5 лет назад +22

      Really, people say that? That is SO rude!!! My partner is legally nearly blind (he has under ten degrees of his field of sight left); he has usher syndrome and so he also is hard of hearing. I know, he can see in the center.
      I have worked as an optician some years ago and the dioptries don't say nothing about being "blind" or not. My sister has 10 dioptries and has a better vision than a lot of other people. Blindness or legally blindness is something you can't correct with glasses. People have to learn this.

    • @jacquelinesmith-jackson2815
      @jacquelinesmith-jackson2815 5 лет назад +1

      CopicGirl
      Sadly that statement is not always true.
      In some cases someone being legally blind can be corrected with glasses.
      Try to explain it this way, try looking at something through your elbow or your nose. It just doesn't work. When Molly says that she can't see, it means that she cannot see, and some crazy people out there think she can see colors or faces. But that statement is wrong.
      😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
      So someone with astigmatism can drive a car their entire life, while other people cannot. But science has created self driving cars, I don't really understand that.

    • @angielopez1341
      @angielopez1341 5 лет назад +7

      And also being a disabled person I find it very hard when I’m talking about myself and I’m comparing myself to other people who don’t have disabilities and sometimes i’ll try to explain to people for example like I can’t walk as well as normal people can and It bothers me that I say normal people because nobody is normal everyone is their own unique person but I never think of another way of saying other people who don’t have disabilities but like in another way. So I wanted to ask, when you explain to another person who doesn’t have your kind of disability or any disability at all, do you say normal people or something else?

    • @Catmum1998
      @Catmum1998 5 лет назад +15

      Angie Lopez in terms of ASD most people (myself included) would refer to non-autistics as ‘neurotypical’
      I have Aspergers and I would say that I experience the world differently to neurotypicals? I find it very difficult to read facial expressions, tone of voice and body language. Eg I might think someone is angry when actually they’re just tired or concentrating. I can also get easily overloaded with anything sensory such as bright lights, strong smells and too much noise (concerts are hell!) there are a lot of autism stereotypes like rainman and sheldon cooper from Big Bang theory, a lot of these aren’t necessarily true and actually quite irritating. I’m terrible at maths and physics, I’m also very disorganised 😂 I have some social skills and I sometimes understand sarcasm but I just have to work a bit harder and I get more tired out after socialising than a neurotypical. These are just a few things I can thing of off the top of my head and are completely different for each individual. Sorry that was a bit of an essay!

    • @angielopez1341
      @angielopez1341 5 лет назад +4

      Jessica Francis oh ok. Bright lights make dizzy and nauseous and loud noises are the worst. When I got diagnosed the doctors told me the part that was affected was my cerebellum, it’s a part in your head behind the brain that controls the coordination and regulate muscle activity. I hated going to school because of the noise and the there’s too many people. Thank you for answering my question.

    One of my eyes was legally blind for most of my childhood, and it’s still a pretty sucky eye. People would ask, (and still do) “what do you see?” Or “is it just black in some places?” And I’m like, I can’t explain what nothing looks like. Like, what if you had no eyes? You don’t see black or white, you literally just don’t see. It’s like a little bit of nothingness has been mixed in with normal vision. That the only way I can explain it.

      @@gabriella15748 Just think of like what do you see behind your head at all times? You don't see your field of vision and then blackness all around it, you have your field of vision and then just nothing around it.
      You can also try thinking of "how much/what does your hand/elbow/whatever see?" which is again nothing, not blackness, right. But that sometimes confuses people.

      Not diabetes for me, as we've tested negative already...
      But I have ppl freak out about me testing my blood sugar to write down.
      While yes, my SD does a great job and I about know where my numbers are on his first alert....
      My Drs still want every detail, and since many argue about how reliable an SD is- I have to get the exact readings from the little machine...
      He usually alerts to get my attention, I go down the list of command words I've trained him with...
      And he paws me again once I reach the command he's alerting for.
      Then me and whoever is driving go for food and while waiting I test my blood....
      I walk slow due to a shattered back, literally.
      So by the time I get somewhere hidden, I'm not going to be able to make it back before it gets hard(er) to walk.
      And I just don't like dragging out my medical supplies in a bathroom!
      Just no.
      Luckily the food places in my town know us well and always has a place that hides us from view(mostly) but gives my SD enough space...
      It just ticks me off when someone goes out of their way to stare at what I'm doing and then flips saying I need to do it in the restroom...
      I try not to mouth too badly about how would they like of their Drs drew their blood over a toilet..
      But some days..
      Uhg.
      I've had the same sort of things happen when I use my inhaler or someone thinks I'm going to use my EpiPen...
      (Haven't had to yet thankfully)
      Like just walk away bro, close ur eyes or something.

      I'm constantly getting shushed and told it's rude, be nice, there's no way they could know etc etc.
      It's hard to word things to where I'm able to get the lesson across, while also not being spoken over by a family member trying to smooth things over.
      (Unfortunately due tk uncontrolled occular migraines I can't drive, as my SD only alerts to the migraine and not the symptoms that start piling up before it- like depth perception, brain fog, eyes not seeing far enough out.... Troublesome.)

  • @AliciaNyblade
    @AliciaNyblade 5 лет назад +51

    First of all, oh, my gods, I'm totally using the term "sighties" now. That is amazing.
    Secondly, I've been visually impaired since birth and I've gotten questions like, "How much can you see?" or, "Do you wish you could see?" or, "Would you like me to pray for you?" (I hate that one so much! Sure, pray for me if you want, but because I'm a person, not because you pity me or see me as a golden ticket to Heaven)
    And some of my favorites are when they're asked about me, but aren't directed at me. Like, if I'm at a restaurant with people and the waiter talks to someone at the table instead of me: "What would she like to drink/eat?", "How would she like that cooked?", "Would she care for some dessert?"
    I always want to be bratty and answer in the third person, but I just politely correct them instead.

Because that sucks, you should do something about it.” Ugh. That can also be offensive, because as if I’d choose this for myself if I had the choice, right? I did a research essay on this and studies have found that it depends on the type of blindness (i.e. spectrum), when they became blind (if they were born blind or if they progressively/suddenly came blind), how they became blind and stuff like that.
      It depends on each blind person, there isn't a specific answer to 'how do blind people dream?'. If I remember correctly, our dreams are based on our reality so if you were born blind you won't 'see' in your dreams like a sighted person, but if you lost your vision throughout your life, what you experienced prior to losing it can be part of your dreams.

    As a blind person, I totally agree with you on all these. I think one of the most annoying things is that people assume that I have an intellectual disability as well. When I mention I can't see, they immediately start talking to me like I'm 2. I use that comparison because I have a cousin who is autistic and that's how his parents and teachers talk to him. Really gentle, extremely encouraging over the little things, stuff like that.

    Thank you, Molly, for making videos like this to 'get things out in the open' because there's always people who don't understand and will ask those awkward questions.
    I'm sighted but have other non - visible disabilities and sometimes people can be difficult when they find out my disabilities; at times they're rude and abusive. For example, I sometimes need a cane to walk, and on bad days people see me walking with my cane and they can see that there's something wrong with me. HOWEVER, if they see me on a 'good' day walking without it, I hear comments from them saying that I'm cheating the system and stuff like:
    'See? He can walk without his cane - he MUST be scamming the system, I should get some video of him walking without his cane and report him to the authorities!
    The point is that I and a friend of mine as well unfortunately get this sort of thing from normal, non - disabled people who don't understand that we have our 'good' and 'bad' days.
    It's just uncomfortable, and I'm sorry to hear that you have to answer those same questions over and over.

    Since you asked: yes, eyes are important when eating. My grandma has recently become blind and she constantly drops things off of her fork, or misses bits of her food. I think sighted people use their eyes to 'pick out' what to put on their fork and determine if it's the right size to stay on it. She does good with finger foods though.

    • @symonehadorn5188
      @symonehadorn5188 5 лет назад +12

      I have to agree with you on the fact that we use our eyes to pick out food because it’s totally true. We determine if it’s the right size to stay on a fork/spoon or how to put something in your mouth. Colors also have a REALLY big part in what we eat.

    • @yoursimenthusiast8721
      @yoursimenthusiast8721 5 лет назад +2

      So missing bites cuz they fall of is a fact of life for both blind and sited, and since I got to experience what it was like to be in complete darkness under blindfold while doing normal things like eating your movements slow because your brain is unfamiliar with the loss of something that you were once so dependent on and because your movements slow to make sure you don’t like, hit something, your not able to have the force to poke something or scoop something because your brain thinks you’ll get hurt moving too fast because you can’t see your surroundings and because of that food falls off. As for knowing what’s on your plate, once you’ve done it enough times you’ll start to realize your utensils can be used like your Kane except it’s meant to feel the textures of the food that’s there and you’ll start to associate the textures with what the food might be, you’ll never be exactly right every time but that’s how you would eat something that’s not finger food

    • @yoursimenthusiast8721
      @yoursimenthusiast8721 5 лет назад +2

      Using your fork as a makeshift cane to find food on your plate can also be used to hover around the pice you intend to get to feel if it’s the right size that’s just a fact of how blind people eat

      hmm well I'm 5'2" and thin and nearly 37 and I still get mistaken sometimes for a 12 year old or someone in high school although lately people have been guessing I'm in my 20s. They tell me I'm supposed to be fatter with a bigger bust and wrinkles and grey hairs to be my age...and I'm just like uh some people are just size 0 with a small bust and non-wrinkly skin. Every once a year or so I get one grey hair. Then they're like "Oh I bet you pull it out." I say "no I just leave it there until it falls out on its own, I don't care..." then they're like "aging is bad. being tiny is bad." and I'm like "I find it to have lots of advantages like being able to fit in a tiny airplane bathroom, spelunking, tree climbing, being very aerodynamic when dancing, not having a big body or bust to get in the way when I'm backpacking, being able to sleep on my front if I feel like it...and being the same height as all the locals in Madagascar so they are more likely to accept me as one of them and I can more quickly integrate into their culture to save the environment with them..." so yeah this annoys them to see a woman that is okay with her body. If I'm not okay that's when they feel they can bully me to try to gain power over me or something. So they want us to be not okay. but to maintain our self esteem we should just not hand our power over to them and say we are okay with our small bodies. I like saying "Good things come in small packages." But this isn't the best response because then they start thinking about sex and I have to shut them up because they are being crass.

    That is a good one. I too am registered blind. In the UK we have Guide Dogs for the Blind which is a charity. Our local group ran a fundraiser where the guests were blindfolded for their meal. Sighties make such a mess because when they eat the push food around their plates rather than bringing the food to their fork or spoon.
    Love your content. I am working through it at the moment. The one with Tas and George moved me to tears.

      pieniaurinko good question....yes. I used magnifying systems. Although I am legally blind and ex., cannot see a person in front of me, I can see movement and colors. I use a variety of audio programs, read/write, dragon naturally speaking and a host of magnifying systems to read and respond. I had a professor who is completely blind. He had a couple of seminary students read essays and exams to him and then he'd comment and grade each one. Being blind falls on a spectrum. The only thing we most assuredly have in common is that we meet the medical and legal definition of being blind.

      @@socratesaristotle101 Wow, thanks for the reply! I know Molly listed the question about using technology among her 'don't ask me about this' list, and I don't want to be rude. It's just that since I don't need them, some inventions/programs/etc. completly pass me by or I don't realize the specific utility. Like I know that computers have audio in- and output, but I only recently realized that this means a blind or near blind person can use voice command to use programs or surf the web.

      pieniaurinko . 😀 all of the communication tools today also help to bridge the gap ex. A person who is deaf can now be understood without using sign language by a person who is blind.
      A person who cannot speak and who is a quadriplegic can, for the first time have their thoughts heard by family members and healthcare workers using gaming devices like the emotiv epoc. Not one word needs to be spoken. Now, thoughts are exchanged and a disabled person can get their needs met with this new form of communication. It's a great time to be living. You feel it, 100%, haven’t you ever had that moment where you’re out with friends at a cafe or at school and the second you stood up, you felt it? And you knew you had to get to a bathroom ASAP. You just can tell by the feeling of it. I won’t go into too much details because it’s TMI but people like to be dry. And you can tell when you’re not dry all throughout your period and that tells you what’s going on.
      For me, my biggest thing when I first went blind was worrying if I had any spots on my pants. Because even though I could feel my period, I was always so anxious that I didn’t get to a bathroom in time. Most women can see whether they’ve had an issue or not but I couldn’t, because after awhile, it dries. I had to ask my mom a lot to make sure it wasn’t on my pants. Thankfully she never saw anything so I guess I did a pretty good job ;) haha it’s funny because I spent so long agonizing over my period, because my periods are so heavy due to endometriosis. And really I shouldn’t have worried at all because it really is easy to tell what’s going on without seeing it. Hope this helps! Sorry if I did get too TMI in the end lol

    First off, I LOVE your channel. I have Spina Bifida so I understand your frustrations at community asked questions. My one that drives me crazy the most is, "Can I help you with that? Then before I answer the person starts to "help". No people you may not help unless you hear me say yes. I am quite capable of doing many things on my own. I do appreciate the offer though.
    You and I think alike in that no question is off limits because in answering those pesky questions we politely educate those with the questions. I'm grateful for your channel. Keep up the great work I'll keep watching. :-)

      Bailey Brian I have a pretty good idea when mine is going to start, just by the way my stomach feels. I’m usually never wrong. I remember one time in Thailand though when I was in hospital on an IV and the day after I started my period and I have no idea. Thankfully though, are usually know when I’m getting it. Mine is irregular, so not every 28 days. But I really do know when it’s going to start, trust me. I work in southeast Asia though and I have to admit that squat toilets are not fun to use on a moving train.

When I tell people this they go stand next to me and say *CAN YOU SEE ME?* (No I can't) or the get obnoxusly close to my face and say *CAN YOU SEE ME NOW* (Yes but get out of my face I can see you when you're are within normal distance from me) It's super weird.

    So this might be a weird question but regarding sighties and food, what are your feelings of the saying “your eyes are bigger then your stomach”? I’m constantly wanting to eat more then I can because I see it and while my eyes are telling me that looks good and I want to eat it my stomach says no. Have you ever had that problem where you are full and then you smell popcorn or bbq and suddenly you are hungry again? I feel as a sighted person I eat more because I can see it rather then because I’m hungry, like I have to finish my plate of food even if I’m full. Thoughts?

      I’m visually impaired, which means I don’t normally have as much vision loss as Molly. 1. It’s a common idiom. It’s not something we’d get offended over. 2. While visually appreciating food is awesome, the lack of seeing food isn’t going to make us eat less or not overindulge.

Or legally blind, if you want to refer to it that way. Meaning I can still see shapes, colors, and stuff like that, but only up until a certain point, and then it’ll blur. But anyway, everyone always asks me that question, and I’m just like, I don’t know. Sometimes I just start randomly guessing, and sometimes I will actually get it right. But after certain point, I’m just like, please don’t ask me that question anymore. It gets really annoying. but… One day I should be evil, and do what you said. LOL.
