      @Caramel Cupcake Wow. It's almost not even insulting because that is so dumb. It's hard not to be mad at them for that, honestly, but I really think that people today are so self-focused that they aren't really listening to people most of the time. I'm don't have dull color vision, everything is just blurry. Then to justify themselves they said: what color is my sweater (I answered the right color, forgot now though, let's say purple) and when I answered correctly, she said, no, it's actually yellow. Personally I don't think this is entirely crazy. Subconsciously a sighted person is checking things like lip movement and facial expressions to try and fill in the gaps if they miss anything the person is saying. My nan used to tell me she could hear better when she had glasses on :) but not everyone needs raised voices thrown at them 🙂

      @@BrownedHound Do you think blind people are completely incapable of doing anything? That they're helpless and that there are no sort of tools that help blind people navigate their lives? You should probably watch more of this girl's videos because you are extremely ignorant. To call someone a liar for being blind is one of the most disgusting things a person can do. Imagine going through a traumatic experience and literally going BLIND just for people to constantly tell you that you're not actually blind.
      And there is something called "speech to text." There are SO many tools to help blind people use the internet, like tools that convert speech into text, text into speech, verbally explain what images are, etc. Next time, think and research before you embarrass yourself and hurt someone with a comment like this.

    When I tell people I'm face blind, I've had some people deliberately switch names on me, just to screw with me. It just makes it that much harder for me to eventually connect their name to their hair/ accessories/ smile/ etc. So DONT DO THIS

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade
      @SmallSpoonBrigade 4 года назад +11

      That one sucks. I used to have that problem due to a psychiatric problem. Seeing people that effectively had no faces was rather disturbing. They sort of had faces, but they were more like rubber masks that lacked much detail.
      Over the years, it's something that I struggle with because I have no mind's eye and no ability to take what a person looks like now and compare that to what they looked like before a hair cut or change in clothing. I've somewhat improved by working to focus on bone structure and eye color, things that don't change as easily, but it's not easy and likely isn't even possible for somebody with actual face blindness.

    • @ProsopAnonymous
      @ProsopAnonymous 4 года назад +5

      @@SmallSpoonBrigade Very interesting! Fortunately for me, I perceive faces fine and can see them in perfect detail, but I don't recognize them. I also can't picture people! Everything I notice about others tends to be subconscious; it throws me off too much when I try to deliberately focus on specific features.

      @@eleanorbrockett6554 No worries! I'm happy to talk about it :D It's a bit of a misnomer, actually. The actual name for it is prosopagnosia, but it means I can see faces just fine, I can't recognize them. This includes close friends, my own parents, my reflection, etc. My channel teaches about it if you're interested in learning more, but I have to rely on other cues to recognize people and it's just not as accurate as the face for recognition.

    Ugh, the part where she told about being asked "what happened to you" was so relatable.
    I'm not blind, but I suffer from clinical depression and often when I said it to someone who didn't know they went like: "Oh! Why? What happened?". And it really bugged me and I couldn't understand why I felt so upset when I heard it. With time I realised it was an incredibly inappropriate question.
    Like, wtf man? I say I have depression and you're literally asking why? What are you expecting me to tell you? Do you want to hear about how my parents were neglectful and left me alone for hours when I was like 5, and then were disappointed on me if I acted like a child and cried? Are you expecting me to casually tell you about my history of sexual abuse when I was a teen? Then what the fuck is that question? Do you want to hear about the meds I take or how I don't really know if my disorder is like, inherited from my depressed parents and maybe there's just chemicals that my brain doesn't make in the right quantities? What the fuck? I don't have to prove myself to anyone, if I told you I have depression is for you to be aware that maybe some tasks will take me longer than for other people, or that I might have a bit of trouble for certain things, not for you to quiz me on it like you're asking which my favourite icecream flavour is.
    (Sorry for the rant but seriously what is wrong with people??)

    I won't lie: I thought you didn't look blind either when I first saw in Shane's video. Not because of something physical or some cliche like the sunglasses. It's just that you're so expressive with your eyes.
    I never met a blind person before so my basis was mostly movies and tv.
    Every time there's a blind character they're always make so the actor have their eyes unfocused and they never move their eyes or head. So even if they're talking with someone next to them they still seem to be staring straight ahead.
    So to see you with your eyes on someone's face while you're talking to them and even rolling your eyes to the camera, it was surprising. And I also realized how ignorant I was...
    So... sorry about that. I've been watching your videos and loving them so much.

      It's not illegal to ask to pet them (obviously) but it's probably unsafe to pet them and illegal to without asking or without a 'yes' from the guide dogs owner. Also, just an opinion of mine; I don't think it's disrespectful at all to ask to pet a guide dog as long as you word it properly. Eg. "Will it affect your dog if I pet it? I just think he/she's really adorable" or something I like that. I'm not blind or have any disabilities (to my knowlege) so I wouldn't be sure if even that's the right way to ask.
      I agree on your statement of it being disrespectful and illegal to interfere with any form of help that a disabled person needs to use or have. Eg. Wheel chair or a well- guide dog :)
      Idk why I'm writing this, idk maybe it just bothered me that you said "and ask to pet them" lol. I'm wierd like that haha

      Sunniesdaylees while polite phrasing is nice (better than why won’t you let me pet your dog) or just drive by petting, most of us prefer it if you don’t ask at all (not to be rude). I get on average about 10 people asking to pet each day (unless I’m grocery shopping, the. I’ll get 10 in that trip alone). I personally have fatigue and migraine problems and food allergies I have to be extremely careful about. It takes all my energy just to shop for an hour. Having a short conversation with 10 people adds a bunch of time I honestly don’t really have. I know some handlers allow it (to each their own) but I also will go non verbal due to exhaustion and/or pain So, many people think I’m just being rude and ignoring them when really I just can’t talk. I do appreciate the people who can take no for an answer and don’t push it or get all entitled ( honestly that’s the majority of people) so I try tot hank them for asking. I also like the parents who teach their kids not to distract her by screaming, calling to her, or petting her vs the parents who point her out to their kids and have them bark or call to her (that’s worse than the people asking to pet because you’re teaching your kid it’s okay). And the most frustrating people are the people who talk to Mochi instead of me. I had one lady behind me in the grocery line and I gave Mochi a treat for tasking and she said (pretending to be my dog) “I want more treats, i. Saw where you got those treats from. Give me more treats. I love treats” and stuff for like 2 min. I hope I didn’t come across as rude.

      I don't feel like your being rude by not replying either though. I'm not one to ask to pet a guide dog either but I understand the thought process who does ask :))

    Thanks for making these videos. My struggle isn't the same as yours, but after serving in the Marine Corps I had a service dog and it was so irritating and frustrating when people would look at me and be scared or ask me "Hey so whats wrong with you?" "Do you have ptsd?" "Why do you have a service dog - you don't look blind" My mental health history has been difficult for me to deal with, and I don't want to open up my medical records with every person that is just curious. I hated it when people would look at me (after thousands and thousands of hours of training) and think I had a fake service dog because I didn't "look" like I had a disability. Thanks for making these videos, you help tons of people even beyond the blind community.

      For my patients who are legally blind, I check if they can see anything on the eye chart. If they can’t, I move to them counting my fingers at 5 feet, if they can’t see it, I continue to move closer. If they can see anything, I will use a pen light and ask if they can see the light. Some can see that, some can’t. (of course this is only for NEW patients that have never been at our office before. If we have seen the patient in the past, I can usually see in the chart what they’ve done to test vision in the past. Then I take a history, we ALWAYS dilate, if a visual correction (glasses Rx) can improve anything, I will do a refraction and see if I can get them to the big E, 20/400, on the chart. Then, they go to the doctor and they check the surface of the eye, the macula, the retina, all parts of the eye and I scribe for them, which is recording how they grade the severity of things and go from there. Blind people should always see an Ophthalmologist, an eye doctor with MD, with surgical skills. Whereas an Optometrist doesn’t hold a medical doctor degree and just goes to optometry school, focusing on refractive issues like glasses, rather than medicine.

      Good question I am blind in the left eye and 20/200 in the right with optic nerve hypoplasia (This means I did not develop optic nerves during development in the uterus)
      I go go to a low vision specialist dr. who is renowned in research and I only trust him. my appointments take anywhere from one hour to three hours he rigorously tests me to make sure that my eyes are working as well as they can be given my condition which is congenital and incurable. and charts everything with technology I go through all sorts of machines and tests to Make sure that my eyes are staying the same And not deteriorating. Tests that others would take to check for typical eye conditions that come along w aging like glaucoma but also to check things like my field of vision and to see if the number of optic nerves I have working is still the same. I have been going to him since I was a baby so for 40 years I don’t trust anybody else. He is amazing and really spends an incredible amount of time with each of his patients. And explains everything he’s doing along the way.

    I am deaf and I’ve had a hard time with adjusting to the way people treat me. A lot of people don’t know how hard it is for me to blend in. I have a cochlear and it is something that helps you hear. I had 3 failures and that is rare to happen. You are a big inspiration for me because of the way you took your disability and made it into something that is amazing. I always want to fit in and a lot of the times that does not happen and I have learned to live with that because of you. The main thing I think is so annoying that I also got a lot of attention for is my lip reading. I read lips really good and the reason for that is because when I was almost fully deaf I had to rely on people’s lips to “hear” them talk. Everybody always says “can you read my lips” and it get so annoying because I am now known as “the deaf girl” or “the girl who can read lips”. You get me through that everyday and I hope someday I could be someone amazing like you. I don’t know a lot of sign language but I do know a bit. You are good for somebody who doesn’t do sign language that often. You are so amazing♥️

It's super important to leave a service dog or guide dog alone and not distract or pet them, they have to stay focused on their handlers.

      Brieanna Bananas true I look for 1 second to see if it’s a service dog and if not I ask to pet it

      I was always taught when they are in their harness, or the best or just work gear to not ask. They need to focus, I was taught the only time to ask is when they aren't in work mode.

    Ppl ask my disabled son questions and ya know sometimes that would bother me bc I have to speak for him, but they don't know that, now seeing it from your perspective I'm glad they ask him first!
