I can read his lips and I could hear some words of him is like he’s whispering
Yeah this is really common especially from people who grew up in English-speaking households where they learned to speak English and their signing was more signed exact English (SEE) than true ASL.
A lot of Deaf people who grow up in those situations are also prone to code switching which is when they change the grammar of their signing to be more english-based if somebody who doesn't sign or doesn't sign well approaches. It's almost entirely unconscious and sometimes they'll even say the words or partially say some of the words as a way to, again, unintentionally help the person that doesn't know sign.
Im a first year deaf studies major so what I'm saying is just what I've learned, of course not everyone does this and I'm not an expert.
Yes I grew up Oral speaking English. But I learned how to sign with a friend at the mainstream school. She is CODA she helped me better understand class. so I was able to experience both Deaf and Hearing world.
Chelsey Abbott thank you for your valuable info
Shayla C I’m planning on learning ASL it’s really amazing
He makes popping sounds when he signs
I've heard that dogs respond better to hand signs than vocal commands. I'd love to see a video on Java's sign language tricks!
This makes sense! I dont sign but when I trained my dogs i used typical and gestures all the time, pointing when I said "go over there", or palm facing down when saying "lay down." And now sometimes when we have company over, if i just gesture to my dogs - so as not to interrupt out guest talking - the dogs understand what I mean.
I trained my dogs with hand signs too. Dogs get a lot of of vocal inflection but hand signs help them understand what we want.
@@skatardrummer1 I did both when training them so they respond to either unless it's something that requires a hand signal like telling them where i want them to go
Isn't it cause like they relate the movement to a gesture. Kind of like a word to a movement? EX: If you put your hand up and they lay down. And you do it over and over wouldn't they like, connect "OH This hand gesture means to lay down"
This is true! My dogs know the sign no very well, and sometimes respond to treat or walk!
When Ryan is making noises it’s actually pretty relaxing not gonna lie...like it reminds me of Inaudible ASMR but I love this couple y’all are the best
Johnathan Reyna 🙏🏻😁
Johnathan Reyna I thought the same thing!

Wtf
you are the nicest person i ever saw on youtube
My wife says you should label his power tools or loud objects and say "this is LOUD"😂
😂 that’s funny
What about for deaf women like me? I’m loud with cooking and cleaning in the kitchen. Pots and pans and plates make lots of noise too. 😬
@@MultiSignlanguage id never complain knowing a delicious dish of something scrumptious is in the works
@@joshs1879 good answer 😂
@@MultiSignlanguage I've got a different yet similar situation. I can hear but my kid has like really sensitive hearing and he'll actually come up to me in the kitchen and scold me for being too loud with the dishes (he's 4, it's kinda cute and kinda like living with a tiny dictator). I have to remember to warn him when I'm going to do something especially loud like use the mixer so he doesn't freak out.
@@sanityisrelative I have sensitivity problems (a disorder called Central Sensitization Syndrome), and thank you so much for being considerate of him. As a kid with sensitive hearing it was REALLY tough sometimes-- the vacuum cleaner was awful! Fortunately my parents would warn me too. Unfortunately, my mom has really loud sneezes and she couldn't always warn me about those XD
If it helps, sensitivity problems often get less severe with age! I can run the vacuum cleaner myself these days :) I still have pain sensitivity and misophonia, but it's gotten a lot better in general. So it should hopefully get better for him as he gets older!
If you need advice from someone with a sensory processing disorder, let me know and I can try to answer any questions you might have :)
Not trying to be offensive at all! But does Ryan vocalize when he laughs? Or are his laughs generally silent?
Kati callahan only his farts are silent 💩

That's actually an interesting question I wanna know too
In a previous video, I forgot which one, they answer this, saying yes he does. :) Anyway I just found this channel and love it and the community

When u guys argue, is it like a scene from naruto where they r mad and doing all their jutsu moves with their hands
Omg!😂😂😂 It's so funny when I imagine them like that.

I had a deaf friend and we’d argue exactly the same way- 😂
We’d argue a lot and whenever we argue in sign language my dad and mum looks at me and her like we’re some sort of “freaks from some stupid anime” 😂
I told myself 'omg don't laugh at this comment' and about a minute later I'm still giggling my ass off imagining that.
Awww, Ryan's reaction when Java put her paw on his hand to "drive"...so cute! Thanks again for making another great video with super helpful info!

The easy solution is this: buy a sound lever meter. There are ones that will turn on a flashing light so deaf people can see they're making too much noise.
But like...would they have to just have that with them wherever they go? I feel like it's better the way they do it just on a case by case basis, like they said he was using the drill, she tells him the drill is loud, okay next time he won't use the drill at night, problem solved.

hello. I just wanted to thank you guys. We recently found out that my little sister is deaf (or hard of hearing, im not a native speaker so i dont know exactly the right term) and your videos helped us a lot and made us understand this world better. So thank you

Does Ryan have a inner voice he hears when he’s thinking to himself? Also I just recently found y’alls channel and I have been bingeing on all your videos I love y’all! Java is such a cutie!
Tori Martinez I would say all humans have a conscious
He probably thinks in his first language which is ASL.
Tori Martinez , I’m an asl student and I find myself thinking in ASL sometimes though I am a hearing student and my first language is english (especially after ASL classes or if I’m extremely tired). So I agree with zhuzhupetlover6673
@@ryienb3798 As someone who is hearing but speaks ASL, can you explain this a bit more maybe? It's just so difficult to imagine if you're used to a voice in your head.
@@glittery_cucumber I'm hearing and know zero sign, but when I attempted learning Arabic, I would occasionally think using the characters/words/shapes instead of the actual vocalized words because I picked up on the written language faster than oral due to being a primarily visual learner.
I imagine it's *something* like that (since almost everyone can read/write their main language) except you've got movement to go with it?
"what changed for me is when i saw she loved me" :))))) imma go cry now
I like it how he clicks his tongue and makes a pop sound when he’s talking
how did your parents react when they found out you were dating a deaf guy/hearing girl?
lexia diaz , I’m quite sure they would react exactly the same regardless of whatever inadequacies he had. Everyone has inadequacies of some kind. But driving a vehicle would certainly have to be denied for anyone who was blind or deaf.
@@esthermiller2713 The number of absolute idiots who think deaf people can't drive is amazing to me lol. Deaf and blind are two VERY different things.
Rikki xo , in order to be able to drive safely a person has to be able to hear. Why were vehicles designed with horns? There are times when the use of a horn actually cautions someone. ( I encourage you to refer to people respectfully......even those who do or say something you disagree with ).
Esther Miller Deaf people can drive lol. my auntie is deaf and drives just fine! deaf people usually have a big long rear view mirror
@@esthermiller2713 Ryan is also in the driver's seat right now C: They had a video talking about how Deaf people are really good drivers because they are always checking around them
I'm sorry, but I laughed so much at Java's noises. She's so cute
3:19 that has to be the biggest donut I've ever seen XD
Just the fact that Ryan was bullied for trying to speak, the fact that he used to be really insecure, it makes me understand how difficult it really can be to grow up in a hearing world. It opened my eyes to difficulties I never thought of. Thank you guys for shedding light on some of that.
When they said first video of 2020 I immediately said; oh you poor dears. They had no idea.
Just a tip, IF the whining/crying does bother you, make sure to firmly but kindly correct the behavior. Definitely do not give affection while its happening because that encourages it just like any other reward would. :)
And by firm that doesn’t mean yelling or hitting your dog!!! Remember that they are basically little kids and you wouldn’t yell and smack a 4 yr old for crying about something no matter how annoying or not worth getting upset over it might be. Trust is a very important thing in any bond and dogs too, i noticed that my dogs are 100 times more trusting and loyal and honestly more obedient for me than my moms dogs are for her(bc when they act out she will smack them as hard as she can and yells at them. When i was really young i remember her making some dogs so afraid they would pee out of fear bc she would get so insane when they were disobedient)
Sorry i feel that this could be interpreted as me being that awful annoying person that’s like EHHH LET ME CORRECT YOU or whatever i was just adding to it ☺️
Also, the 'ahhhHHWHhwhwhhww' makes the dog think you are worried as well.
Widdekuu91 I know this could be directed as just a general advice towards all dog owners but if you are directing this towards Ryan and Ellen: i’m pretty sure Java is deaf so it probably doesn’t make a difference if she coos or not in this particular case.
@@loafyu5405 I want your guys' Parents

Can Ryan still listen to music? By “listen” I mean feel music. (Example: the bass booming if it’s loud enough)
I don't know about Ryan, but I have deaf friends who I met swing dancing. They could feel the beat through the vibrations from the floor. We had two follows and one lead who were deaf, and they were all great dancers who could definitely feel the music.
When you can literally feel the music...
Well- personally I’m deaf and since I go to some of my dad’s concerts, I feel the music vibrations but I can actually hear with a cochlear and I just feel it and listen at the same time
If he was completely deaf for his whole life, that means that he has no idea what music actually feels like to listen to. Was he deaf for his whole life? Idk, I’m just wondering.
He cant hear
He can feel
for the “loud noises at 1am” dilemma, ellen have you ever thought of labeling loud things? ex: (drill, blender, etc) it might help!
Bree Phoenix understandable! i’m curious if it would work for ellen and ryan since it seems like there’s a pattern of things he does that late at night (working on the car), you know?
great to hear another’s perspective! thanks!! 😁
Bree Phoenix - I think Jamie was suggesting labeling just the things that make really loud noises (the kind of things you’ll disturb housemates or neighbours with if you’re using them at 1am - like power tools, vacuum cleaner, powerful kitchen blender).
@@breephoenix111 no one is criticising you
Sarah P i was, thank you! 🙏🏻
Bree Phoenix You’re honestly blowing a simple, polite suggestion way out of proportion. No one is forcing you to do these labels. You’re getting extremely offended over this. This channel is about educating people, not belittling them. Your situation is YOUR situation. She’s referring to Ryan and Ellen. If they want to answer her and say why that wouldn’t work for them, they can. Otherwise, this isn’t about you.
I love how he eat in every video 😂😂
OK I'm not sure why RUclips brought me here with these two wonderful people but thank you. This has to get into some sort of
educational category. As a person that knows nothing about deaf folks I'm learning tons. Plus you guys are great together (dog too!)
Have no idea what brought me to them but now I'm literally considering learning sign language lmao.
I love how he sounds sometimes like he is vocally "clicking" and "popping" like certain tribes do in their languages all over the world.
Ryan looks so happy getting to pick out donuts!!
I like how open he is about how he used to feel insecure and scared to be himself, but now feels safe with you. That's so sweet. And now he's himself with the world, so EAT IT, bullies!!
Not meaning to be offensive-honestly!-but even being deaf doesn’t mean we don’t need to be aware of what time it is before using power tools late at night. Just saying that I don’t think Ellen is being “ignorant” to run to the garage to quiet the screeching drill at 1 a.m. No one wants sleep-deprived, hostile neighbors, so it’s pretty important not to, like, mow at 6 a.m. or use a power saw at midnight or whatever. We had a neighbor once who didn’t even like our son to shoot hoops after 10 or so (not with friends, just alone). The pound-pound-pound of the dribbling kept him awake. Granted, a tad over-sensitive in our minds, but we did comply b/c the guy was otherwise very kind, he did have to work in the mornings, and we didn’t want tension. Besides, if it bothered him, maybe it bothered others, so hoops stopped at 10.🤷🏻♀️
Nice grammar
I agree. My husband is deaf and is a contractor. He doesn't hear how loud he is, but just like anything else, when you KNOW it's a loud tool, or if dragging something is loud, courtesy says that when it gets late it's time to stop. I hate it when bad manners is blamed on deafness. Part of that is also growing and maturing.
Couldn’t agree with you more!
I totally thought the same thing. It's completely understandable to not know when you're too loud if you're doing new or different, like not realizing the tv is too loud or dishes are clanging. That's also never going to bother a neighbor. But that particular drill must always be noisy. Just don't use power tools after 10.
P.S. Does Ryan fix cars for a living or is just a hobby? He is obviously very passionate about it. I can't imagine doing anything other than sleep at 1am!!
When I was a kid, one of my older neighbours played solo basketball all the time. As someone who was actually kept awake all the time, thank you for being so considerate of the neighbour! :)
bruh my eyes started overflowing when he got to talking about how he feels secure with you 😭😭💕
has answering these questions changed/improved your guys' relationship or communication at all? what have been some of your favorite questions so far? :)
Are Ryan's parents deaf? Do all of his siblings and extended family know ASL? I'd love to know more about his upbringing, how quickly did his parents decide to learn ASL? Etc. I know that most deaf children are born to hearing parents and that these things can be a struggle.
Ellen is beautiful, and Ryan is so handsome. What a good-looking, kind-hearted couple ❤
Ryan's mouth movement's noises when he's sign language is better than a professional beat boxer's carrier. I'm vibing hard to his mouth noises.
I think a really good way to fix this problem (if you're determined to), is to install a variable noise-reactive light that flashes when it hits its limit. You could even plug it in with a power switch timer, so it powers on automatically after 10 PM.
A red one would probably be best. So as the noise gets louder, the light gets more red. When it reaches a certain threshhold, it'd start flashing.
"I always run" that is one hell of a video game char. because in video games you also always running (if you can). Nobody walks in video games
Idea: he could get a decibel meter with him after 10pm so he knows not to go over a certain value so he’s not too loud to whoever’s sleeping
It's actually interesting cause he doesn't realize how distracting/interrupting a dog is with their whines, growls & barks lol
The introductions are always so cute! Great job! 🥰🥺
CassiSmith thanks Cassi! ☺️
The two of you are amazing! You have an amazing understanding of each other and have really heightened my understanding of the deaf community! Happy New Year to you both 🥰🥰

Okay when Ryan vocally said “calm down” to Java, it was absolutely ADORABLE
Since Ryan is deaf, has he ever gotten scared from someone tapping him on his shoulder? For example, if I'm in the zone listening to music or a video and don't notice someone is tapping my shoulder it can scare me. Is Ryan used to it so it doesn't bother him as much or can it still scare him if he is in the zone say working on his car?
He can't listen to music

@@tsunami1161 My questions isn't if he listens to music, it's if someone taps him on the shoulder does it startle him or has he gotten used to it for when people need to get his attention. I do understand that he can't listen to music.

Hi! I’m currently learning how to drive (in the UK) and I was wondering how Ryan’s experience of learning to drive whilst being deaf was different to Ellen’s hearing experience. What was it like? Keep making videos and spreading awareness! 💗

Did he get told that farts make a sound??😂
Most likely.. Deaf/deaf people are usually extremely aware of the hearing world.
Java: They see me rolling, they hatin’
But Java is SOOOOO adorable and I love how you guys are so supportive of each other
2 questions. I’ve noticed in your videos that if you’re holding something in one hand (camera, food, whatever) you still sign with the other hand. How do you modify them (if at all) to make them understandable? Also, do you guys ever feel judged or like people are staring in public because you’re signing? And if so how do you deal with this? Love you guys!! ❤️
I'm hearing but sign a lot with my friends and whenever I/we are holding something, first as deaf culture its more appropriate to put the object down-similar to not talking with food in your mouth. but if you can't @ashtynX is right, you usually sign with the dominant hand. if you can still move the hand but not make hand shapes you just move the hand to the location for the sign and usually its still understandable. There isn't a huge amount of signs in ASL (different in other sign languages) that need both hands or else it doesnt make sense. if it is more complex statement and you need both hands to explain then you just have to put the object down. but many signs that use two hands the hands are mirroring each other so one hand is usually, although maybe awkward, adequate to get the point across.
I wish someday I'll get a man like Ryan. Like having a relationship like yours. You are so cute🥰 There are PSE classes (not online)?
I wish someday I'll get a girl like Ellen
12:12 the way he reacted tho awwwww
Laying in bed and when Java cries my dog Eli sits up and looks for her 😂
Could you break down how to say "you're making a lot of noise could you please keep it down"? I feel like for hearing people a finger on your lips is the universal gesture for quiet, so it's good to know that's offensive to deaf people, but alternative gestures would be appreciated!
Maybe tapping your ear then gesturing downwards with your palms facing down would be good? :)
Hey Ryan, Ellen and Java!!! I'm glad you brought up the "Shhh" gesture. I would have never taken that to be offense, now I know that it is. I have to watch again, so that I can pick up what you were saying for the correct way to inform someone whose Deaf that they are being loud. Thanks for teaching me proper etiquette.😊

I was wondering if you'd ever come across the Deaf West theatre company? They staged a production of the musical Spring Awakening that went to Broadway and featured both deaf and hearing performers, and there was also a production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame that had a deaf actor playing Quasimodo (which actually makes a lot of sense because the character was deaf in the original novel). If you haven't seen either of those, could you maybe do a "Sign Duo Reacts" video? There's loads of clips on RUclips from both productions :D

I feel like also being hearing is a bit difficult when it comes to sound. Like I have ptsd and loud noise in the morning makes my body go into a fight or flight mode and dissociate all day. When my partner and I started staying at each others places he blasted rock n roll in the morning and I without thought would get angry and have to leave because well I cant control it(my body is just screaming get away).
