I’m Brazilian, so I speak Portuguese but I’ve studied English since I was a teenager and I’m able to speak in both languages pretty well. I went to a restaurant with a friend and on the way we decided that we should pretend we were Americans. It was FUN AF because people went OFF on us talking s**t. Calling us many many ugly names because they could bet we didn’t speak Portuguese. I was having the time of my life. At the end of the dinner we said: “Can we have the bill e uma garrafinha de água pra viagem?” The waiter turned RED and said (in Portuguese): “You speak Portuguese? I’m so so sorry! We didn’t meant to offend anyone! I’m so sorry!” I was laughing so much. It was so fun. 😂

I'm shocked but I actually choked up at the end; I'm so happy you gave her an opportunity to talk about what their hard-working lives are like. I like it when you're able to get past the (very fun!) novelty of them discovering the language and progressing to a real conversation of substance. In this world (and this country), where so many people are so xenophobic and flat-out racist, these videos are doing a great service to everybody.
My wife does this always when she gets her nails done. She speaks the language but acts like she doesn't. She tells me them ladies are always bad mouthing their husbands or the "Karens" lol.
That sounds like one of these famous old Jewish jokes. In the 1930s, a Jewish guy sees a middle-aged black gentleman reading a Yiddish newspaper on the subway. He works up the courage and approaches him to timidly ask:" Excuse me, Mister, are you maybe Jewish?" The black guy says: "Me? Do I look "meshigga" to you?"
Seeing all the people light up when you spoke their language warmed my heart. I’d imagine it made them feel comfortable and safe, and like someone is taking the time to understand/appreciate/accept them in a country where that is not common.
My favorite part is watching people’s eyes light up when they realize they speak their language. It probably is a comforting feeling finding people who respect them in a country where they often have to work so hard to adapt

She opened up so much to you once you started speaking her language. Talking about family, culture, etc. I am sure that wouldn't have happened if the conversation was only in English.
You’ll never truly understand someone unless you speak their language. It’s a shame, that it’s most immigrants take their first language as a way to withhold and information. But when you have three or more (one that isn’t common for you to learn) you realize how much of a blessing it and that gossiping in others faces kinda disappears

I really love how polite this dude is and the fact that he didn’t embarrass her or confront her in a rude way when they actually said that they were crazy is insane. I love him already ❤️
It was really rude of her to call them crazy. But some Chinese people don't like being on camera. They don't want anything to do with came. It'll bury them from their private loves. So we have a tendency to think people who films us, are a bit... You know... Weird? But she overdid it with crazy. She could have said "he's weird"
Zyra Shahbazi .. I understand your opinion but here’s my point of view, First of all she could’ve said no cameras, in this way she would not expose HERself. second, are you aware what the word confront means? Its way different than exposing, confrontation is when you put someone in an ugly/embarrassing position on the spot which will result in embarrassment and feel of guilt, well, he didn’t do that, now let me ask you, if someone came to you and called you crazy and he saw you filming him isn’t he the one who is exposing himself? In addition to that this man ( the youtuber ) actually never intended to expose them he simply has youtube videos of him talking in Chinese in front of Chinese people! Thats how he makes his living. Let alone that she knew he was going to post the video because he was filming so she had no problem embarrassing him infront of his chinese audience? Him not understanding chinese doesn’t mean you can insult him in chinese. Sincerely.
TBH even if the translation is inaccurate I didn't think he was trying to make her look rude. It was clear she was referencing the weirdness of recording getting his nails done. I thought she was really sweet and I love how happy people in his videos are at hearing their languages being used by a foreigner so far from home :) They always light up!
So why wouldn't he have told them that they were recording for a video, that's usually what RUclipsrs do lol or make it obvious it's for a RUclips vid. Isn't it illegal to film someone and show their identity without their permission? That's why people get their faces blurred in reality TV shows or some RUclips shows so they don't get sued. Idk, I'm confused with this video. But that's not to say this isn't far from Asian people do gossip about their customers in their own language (which is really rude by the way, to talk about them thinking they won't understand. And right in front of them too.)
Brian Johnson yess! I live in Sweden but speak Hungarian (born in Transylvania) and I literally jump at the people I hear speaking Hungarian cause it’s been so long since I’ve heard another person speak other than my mother.
It’s crazy how well he connected with her once he spoke her native tongue. Miscommunication and not being able to understand each other causes many of the conflicts in today’s world
Even if the Americans didn't speak Chinese , they were still recording it and could have had it translated later ; so people need to be more careful when they think their insults won't be understood .
I notice Chinese people always seem very closed off and to themselves but when they see that you speak their language they light up and seem so much nicer
@MegaJf16 Yes that's pretty common but it's actually bad if you really want to learn the language, is better to embarras yourself that just slow your learning, and most people will appreciate that you are trying and help you.
I wish I could learn another language but I spent my time learning programming languages and I think I have corrupted my 'hardware' for language learning.
Mauricio Machuca That’s true that it’s good to learn but she may just be scared. I’ve heard many stories about non-Americans in America being told to “Go back to their country.” Maybe she’s just trying to avoid that kind of stuff happening to her
Jason Bennett it was easier for me when I was younger. I’m trying now, even being the only English speaker amongst many Thai, and it’s a struggle. My brain doesn’t work like it once did. I like speaking Spanish in Thailand and Thai in Mexico. Those cultures don’t cross super often.
Imagine if he didn’t start speaking Mandarin right away, and was just listening to the ladies gossip about him. Then right at the very end is like “Hey, I speak Mandarin too-“
The translations were inaccurate just so you know... he kind of did them dirty. They were ACTUALLY just being concerned of why they were recording them.
@@leht1617 he was raised in Beijing. He even says it though his videos. His practice was being exposed more the very environment around him. It's not really practicing if the language that is spoken the most is the dominate language. Your reply would be more relevant if he was located/raised somewhere else. Like if he was raised where the majority of his family lived he'd probably only speak english like they do but if he went out of his way and learned Chinese, mandarin, fuzehouse, etc. Then that would be practice which would be respected. @@leht1617 while thats true, i feel theirs multiple factors perfect example would be something like this, they know they can understand you and so its harder to talk shit or say something unless your willing to confront them directly about it. basically forcing people to act nicer then they likely would be. again their are likely MANY factors but i feel like your comment and this one are probably the two biggest players and will obviously vary from person to person. Imagine learning one of the world hardest languages then saying, you know what, I'm gonna learn another dialect after knowing like 2 already, then I'm just gonna switch between them. That is really fricking cool.
I hate that Chinese (Mandarin) is said to be one of the hardest langugages.. it’s been one of the easiest languages for me to learn. Once you get the tones down, and there’s only 4, everything else speaking wise is a breezeee. Chinese doesn’t even have conjugations, tenses, or anything like that, once you know a word, you know it and it never changes in it’s form like English does. Plus, since most every word is 1-2 syllables vocabulary is really easy to learn. And then learning characters is not as difficult as it may seem, because they’re most all built from different radicals that you can memorize and then even infer the meaning from seeing certain radicals in a character.
I lived in Italy for 3 years and within 6 months I was fluent in Italian. My landlord told me when I left that my Italian had come a long way and how much he appreciated me and respected me for learning the language.

Some, not all, Oriental Asians can forget that, in this day and age, there are a lot of people that are bi or multi-lingual. And with the likes of Chinese, Japanese and Korean, starting to become much more widely learned, everywhere in the world, it is very easy to get caught out, when trying to slander others in your own language. I had a friend, in a similar scenario as this video. She spoke Vietnamese beautifully. Her dad was from Vietnam and her mom was American but my friend didn't overly look like she was mixed. Well we were getting our nails done and the women were slandering her, because she was wanting a complex design on her nails because she was going to a wedding, in a few days. She let them continue slandering and didn't speak up until we were paying and leaving. Then in perfect Vietnamese she told them 'Dont expect a tip or for me to come back. Next time, don't slander the people, that are giving you business.' A good portion of the employees, looked like they were ready to die in their spots. Not all nail salons, run by foreign folks are like this of course but there are still some, that bring down their communities, in this fashion. The girls in this video weren't really slandering per se, they were more just confused, as to why the guys were filming and probably thought they were nuts. Even in this day and age, some still find it weird that we are vlogging our way through life. I didn't hear any malice in the tone, so I don't think it was meant to be bad.

I really love how polite this dude is and the fact that he didn’t embarrass her or confront her in a rude way when they actually said that they were crazy is insane. I love him already ❤️
he exposed her on youtube.....
I agree.
It was really rude of her to call them crazy. But some Chinese people don't like being on camera. They don't want anything to do with came. It'll bury them from their private loves. So we have a tendency to think people who films us, are a bit... You know... Weird? But she overdid it with crazy. She could have said "he's weird"
Min Yoongi .. I agree, lots of people really hate being on camera, but as you said she could’ve said it nicer.
Sincerely.
Misleading. She’s actually concerned as to why she’s being recorded and she thinks she’s done something wrong
Clickbait, Jason, clickbait.

@@KpopLover1013 true. It's like seeing people in public scream at you to delete a video and threat to sue your ass lmfao - people do not know the laws and don't use common sense on day to day basis. It's pretty sad imo.
@@KpopLover1013 it’s still odd to be doing so.

Seeing people react to someones learned skills is always a treat!
DAMN, THAT "Huh?!" Was priceless 🤣

Wow, Chinese people are so rude

Exactly spongebob meme😂

Actually I can't speak Chinese so stop assuming things

You stole my commet lol
She probably really enjoyed being able to speak her own language with a customer. :)
Her whole demeanour changed. It was lovely to watch her relax and enjoy conversing comfortably
Doesn’t she already do that though
i’m allergic to cats not in her native language that she’s comfortable and probably fluent in. When you talk in another language that isnt your own and probably not fluent in youre more than likely completely at ease
deleted exactly! my mother tongue is spanish but i live in england and i’m not as fluent in english as i am in spanish and i always feel like i’m never truly myself while speaking english.
Gavin is my Mandarin teacher and he showed us this in class. I swear I’m not lying.
One time my mom was at a Chinese restaurant with our neighbor who'd studied in China for a long time. At the time they were both plus size and my neighbor heard one of the servers say "2 more bowls for the cows" or something. My neighbor walked up and asked when the cows would be served 😂😂 sis was shook

Omg now that’s crazy that they would days that and also I’m happy that friend spoke up !!!
@@nicole.c.burger7544 that's not how commas work. You're looking for some periods throughout that run on paragraph.
@Wavy Stacks Oh no. You're not going to read my one comment, on one video on the internet. I'm so hurt and sad. Don't want to read then don't. No need to announce it as if it's special.
To be fair, the manicurist probably felt uncomfortable on camera. She seemed really nice afterwards..
Freddy Valentine well, yeah, because she was caught. Gotta work it for that tip I suppose

Exactly. Not everybody is like Trump, where everytime he gets caught doing some bad shit, instead of fixing his behavior like this lady, he actually doubles down, lol.

Somehow in politics, people dont get the basic idea that "correcting your past mistakes" can make you look better.

Thought this was gonna be like a person getting embarrassed cause they got caught gossiping. But then it just turns into one of the most wholesome conversations!
Mskes me nervous, so people will gossip about you just beacuse you may not understand them.. low morals.. It's sad that people are like this.
No she knew she fucked up thats why she flipped it around
@@pspirate5574 if you look at some of the other translations from people that speak Chinese she was worried they were filming her to catch her messing up and said "we've run into some crazies" more as a reference to what's happened in the past. She wasn't really gossiping, but just nervous about the cameras. Tbh since they're running around NY filming everything I think more people gossiped about them in English, it can be a bit unnerving.
@@niachristian8094 she actually didn't use the word "crazy" - she said that they might've upset some gang because they were filming
@@alex.chan__ thanks for the correction. Tbh I don't blame her. I get that these dudes are RUclipsrs and it's what they do for content but I'd also be weirded out by some guys filming a seemingly mundane interaction. I don't think she was trying to be rude to him, just confused about why she was on camera.
So awesome you all speak mandarin and some other dialects. It expands your viewpoint. Some of the words mean so much more than what was translated in English. Like the Chinese word “li hai”.
