I feel like as time continues on it’s less and less impressive people can speak other languages. So many people already speak English and so many people are learning other languages I don’t think most people really even bat an eye to other races and nationalities speaking different languages especially in big cities

When I was in China with a tour group, we were warned that as individuals we could be approached by individuals wishing to to practice English. This happened to me as I was walking alone and we had a wonderful conversation. The gentleman offered to buy me a cup of tea but I had to get back to the ship. Others were taken to homes and had a wonderful time. So glad we were given a head up.

A couple guys did that to me in the grocery store. I enjoyed the looks on their faces when they realized the guy twice their size understood every word they said.
I remember reading a story about a grocery store cashier who was scanning and packing, while the Chinese lady was complaining in Mandarin about her short hair, saying she looked like a boy, and telling her husband to make sure she doesn't crush the eggs. Right near the end she says "make sure she doesn't forget the water" and the cashier replies in English "I won't forget the water". Lady was horrified when she realised the cashier had understood absolutely everything, her husband was like "That's why you shouldn't badmouth the retail workers".

I worked with them a bit(they were foreign workers at a plant i worked at), and they always seemed a mix of happy/proud almost when someone would both even try and speak a bit, and have good pronunciation of it as well. I assume its just something to do with their culture that adds to the surprise a lot to them.

Well, he did study Mandarin in Beijing for a year, and has10 years speaking it, too. He likely learned a little Cantonese on the side. I know folks who speak one of the two, and cannot understand the other, so must rely on writing out their words to communicate or use English. One Taiwanese colleague did this when we went to Hong Kong 25 years ago.

Hey man, he helped get me into learning, so I am currently learning Spanish (Middle school and still learning), French (Took in 9th grade, am gonna take it this year and plan to do the same Junior and Senior), Chinese (Through an app) and sorta Japanese (Through the same app). I definitely recommend trying to learn some, as it's personally really fun for me
I agree it feels good. But it kinda depends where you go too. Asians are super impressed and receptive. I learned french for 3 years. When I went to France, nobody really cared. @@Fujibayashi50 Its more i think its a bit unusual for them to see foreigners speaking good Chinese. I worked with them a bit(they were foreign workers at a plant i worked at), and they always seemed a mix of happy/proud almost when someone would both even try and speak a bit, and have good pronunciation of it as well.
I assume its just something to do with their culture that adds to the surprise a lot to them.
