I just love how it starts with legible lyrics and then descends into the Finnish madness.

This song is sometimes referred to as "Levan polkka" in tube. It is due to similarity in the first letter, capital I & l . Ieva is a habit of pronunciation in certain dialects of Finnish language for Eeva, bit same way as Marie / Mary.

How do you describe a folk song? It's a piece of music performed by the people of a certain culture or region that reflects their outlook and lifestyle. Usually, this refers to a song with no known composer or lyricist, one that can exist in multiple versions.

I'm laughing, but at myself. Sitting here tapping my feet to a Finnish polka, or polkka, whilst grinning pondering what they're saying. Go figure 😁

After 2 years, the truth will finally revealed to you... I am Finnish man and this is a song in my native tongue, albeit in older dialects, but I do get the main gist: the song is about a young man and his love interest, a young girl Ieva. They are in love, but her mother is very protective of her and very conservative. The girl tricks her mom and sneaks to her neighbours house for a party to meet with this boy. They dance all night long and she is at her height of happiness. They obviously share deep love. Later she goes home, where she has to confront her mom. She is very angry and berates the girl. The boy feels that as a man he needs to protect the girl, so he stands up for her (despite the fact this mom could be his mother-in-law in the future), and tells the mom to shut up and mind her own business, lest he will beat her up!

Wow, wasn't expecting to see anyone react to this one.
It's "Eva's Polka", the version you were listening to is by Loituma.
This is the video if you want to see them sing it live ruclips.net/video/7yh9i0PAjck/видео.html
Also the ad lib section in the middle was used in a popular meme, Leekspin.

Yes, it means Eevan polkka. But in some local dialect people say Ieva, when they mean Eeva.

Folk songs are tyåically traditional songs of each nation, 100s or 1000s of years old, usually.
So they are culture special. Check English and Irish folk songs, for example. In slow songs, British, Irish and Amertican bands apply folky elements.
In the US old Country songs and Negro Sprituals are Folk Songs, and old Cajun and Mexican songs, Native Americas' traditional songs. So the old songs, where you hear the old preferences, like African vibes in the Old Gospel or Spirituals, or Field Songs, Worl Songs.
They are ofetn performed in traditional costumes, maybe with old dances. Their origin is often unkmown, beig age old.
Like this one goes at least to the 18th cetury, these lyrics where made earky 20th century - before that it long just an instrumental song.
So it's good these singers imitate instruments here. Accordeon and violin (fiddle) is how this would be played, rhythm maybe stamped to a wooden floor.
This choir arrangement was the invention of this group, Loituma. So there is music school education linked to an old folk song.

No idea what they are saying, but is definitely fun and upbeat! Love that there are no instruments other than their voices!

Dont trust the subtitles, theyre very wrong in a lot of places. If you wanna know what its about though, Ieva is a girl who wants to go dances but her mother doesnt let her, Ieva fools her and has a good time with a boy. Later when they return to ieva's place her mother shouts at ieva and the boy tells ievas mother to shut her mouth and "if you want to keep your health gather up your bones and go lie down" and "you have to bite, im not easy to swallow, you can go from west to east if you like but im not letting go of ieva"

its hard to translate bc it has old slang and finish words but here a very rough translation
The sound of a polka drifted from my neighbor's
and set my feet a-tapping oh!
Ieva's mother had her eye on her daughter but
Ieva she managed to fool her, you know.
'Cause who's going to listen to mother saying no
when we're all busy dancing to and fro!
Ieva was smiling, the fiddle it was wailing
as people crowded round to wish her luck.
Everyone was hot but it didn't seem to bother
the handsome young man, the dashing buck.
'Cause who's going to mind a drop of sweat
when he's all busy dancing to and fro!
Ieva's mother she shut herself away
in her own quiet room to hum a hymn.
Leaving our hero to have a spot of fun
in a neighbor's house when the lights are dim.
'Cause what does it matter what the old folks say
when you're all busy dancing to and fro!
When the music stopped then the real fun began
and that's when the laddie fooled around.
When he took her home, when the dancing was over
her mother angrily waiting they found.
But I said to her, Ieva, now don't you weep
and we'll soon be dancing to and fro!
I said to her mother now stop that noise
or I won't be responsible for what I do.
If you go quietly and stay in your room
you won't get hurt while your daughter I woo.
'Cause this fine laddie is a wild sort of guy
when he's all busy dancing to and fro!
One thing I tell you is you won't trap me,
no, you won't find me an easy catch.
Travel to the east and travel to the west but
Ieva and I are going to make a match.
'Cause this fine laddie ain't the bashful sort
when he's all busy dancing to and fro.

That was Finnish folk music, other areas have other styles. There are four people in the band Loituma who sang this.
A followup song to react could be "Vihma" by a Finnish band called Värttinä. That's "modern" or "distilled" or "evolved" music with heavy folk music influences. This is a live rendition on an Italian TV channel more than 20 years ago: ruclips.net/video/9o8zfvK1I5E/видео.html
Note that there are two songs, "Vihma" is the first one and stops at 3:30. The latter song is good as well...
The songs lyrics are rather impressionistic but a woman is apparently asking for a place to sleep, having walked in snowfall and rain, perhaps crying for lost love.
