4age oil pump vs 4age oil pump vs 4age oil pump

- Here's a video explaining the important differences between 4age oil pump designs. During its life the 4age had three different oil pump gear designs. The first one was the worst with squared gear teeth that resulted in premature pump failure. The first revision of the 4age oil pump introduced rounded gears which were less prone to breakage and lasted longer. The final revision made the oil pump gear thicker which made it even less prone to breaking and enabled it to push about 20% more volume of oil.
In this video you can see the three different oil pump gears design up close and see the differences between each of them.
Here's where you can buy 4age oil pumps with the latest and bes gear design:

Good video, thanks for showing the differences. Billzilla.
Are you THE Billzilla? I read your 4age page about a million times. An honor to have you commenting here sir! Thank you for all the valuable info and resources you provided to the 4ag community.
@@d4a Yep it's me. :) I'm very glad people get some benefit from my pages. I'm actually rebuilding the last 4AGE I built, that was done in about 2003 I think. I sold it to a friend of mine and it's back here for a rebuild. Speaking of oil pumps, I'm going to use a 7AFE oil pump cover, as there's one version that has a crank trigger unit on it. It'll make for a more accurate ignition system. But your video reminded me that I'll have to have a look at the pump gears to see how they compare with the various 4AGE ones.
@@TheBillzilla it's the last 7A-FE one in the T22 Avensis, right? How different is the 7A-FE oil pump housing from the 4A-FE one (one of my friends would need a 7A-FE oil pump, but I have this latest 4A-FE pump brand new in my garage)?
(Btw I'm a big fan of yours too, thanks for for the advice on the 4A-FE heads!)
I don't think there's a lot of different, they should use the same oil 7.5 mm pump gears but some of the 7AF covers have a crank position bracket on them.
This is incredibly useful information! I had zero oil pressure at idle after warming up, and was concerned it was the oil pump. It turned out to be the oil pressure relief valve (attached to the oil filter sandwich plate) being stuck open. But if I ever need to replace the oil pump, I now know what revisions to look for before installation. Thank you so much for making this video!
Thanks for showing us differences about those 4A OIL PUMPS
Great info! Especially if I do end up deciding to rebuild my 4A-GE for any reason, though I have my doubts. Keep up the great work man!
802 Garage I'm actually rooting for sr20 swap now. It's gonna be more fun and new. Any videos coming up soon?
Still trying. Finding even an hour to edit has been hard. Whenever I'm not working on homework I should be, hahaha.
I'm super excited for the SR20 swap. Basically as soon as I'm done school I want to start on it. I'll probably disassemble the old engine too of course. Will be interesting to see what carnage is in there.
I can confirm.... My 20V brand new Aisin oil pump looks like the "final review" one that you showed. So, being the 20V Blacktop the final engine of all.... makes sense...
Cheers

Nissan guy here, we had also a few iterations of oil pumps.
The thickness variatons, as well as bigger diameter.
The version with the halfmoon seperation has an variation on teeth shape, some chamfer on the edges creating pockets for oil. Those pockets help with hot oil. IT also has better sealing properties, more contact/sealing area.
Mechanical weaknes is an disadvantage of that design.
Wow still learning I’m on my 3rd 4age 1 big 2 small now building series I ZE for my sons 82 never looked at oil pump dissimilar just bought new. Thanks mate
Great info! When I built my 18RG the oil pump was basically the same as an 18RC pump but with a pump body spacer and wider drive and driven "rotors" (that's what they called them in the factory manual), or gears. Keep up the good work!
+ZatoichisCaneSword! I googled the 18RG after I read your post. Looks like a lot of fun. Do you have it in a Celica?
+driving 4 answers (mr2 mk1 hero) I built that motor when I was in college for Auto Tech back in '99. It was going to go into a '76 Celica GT, but life happened. I still have the factory Mikuni Solex carbs for it though. They have official Toyota parts tags on them, and will go on a Toyota engine some day. I got the motor from a junkyard here in Aberdeen, WA, USA for $50 because they didn't know what it was and honestly I'd never seen one either. I just had to pull it myself, which went really well.
This style of oil pump is sometimes referred to as a 'gerotor' style pump.
Thanks for posting this. The wider gear also has a larger flow rate.
Your information is dead right, well done. The "upgrade oil pumps" for the 16V engine on my website are just genuine OEM pumps originally intended for the 20V Silvertop. If you use the correct part number you will always end up with the best version that's backwards compatible. You have to watch out with the Bigport engines as the higher oil flow can aggravate the oil drain issue from the intake side of the head.
Sam Qu Whoa, it's mister SQ of SQ engineering. Im honored to have you commenting here. Really appreciate all the awesome products on you site and what you do for the aw11 and 4age communities.
Yes thanks. I also remembered something else after I made my initial post, I don't have a whole lot of experience with second hand bits so I have never encountered the second oil pump type but I have seen the same type of narrow but sinusoidal gears in a 7AFE oil pump.
What is this issue?
@@Vaettr205 The oil drain issue? I can explain in more details if that's what you would like to know more about?
@@Samqdf Yes, and either that or just point me in the direction of where to read on it if you don't feel like elaborating. I did a search and didn't turn up anything
Nice video. I've been beating the hell out of 4AG motors for 20 years in various forms and have yet to have an oil pump failure. I don't think of the 4AG oil pump as being a troublesome part of the engine
very helpful ! thank you ! and nice lighting on the video !
Ta Kumi Thank you. Glad it's useful. Lighting was just cleverly used daylight in this video :)
glad i know to pick the better oil pump when it's time to rebuild my 4age, thanks for the infos, very interesting fact!
+An Trinh Thanks for watching. Glad the info was useful.
Thanks for posting this!
Hi, i have a busted silvertop oilpump. I have a blacktop oilpump to replace it. Do i need to replace the timing belt and crank gear with blacktop parts? Using the silver belt it seems loose.
Hi thank you very much for this video it's very informative, just to let you know i bought an aftermarket oil pump that's the exact same design as the latest model oil pump with the widest gears so i went ahead and stripped the pump and measured the gears as where i found that this pump actually has 7.95mm thick gears so i assume it's most probably because it's an aftermarket part...
Do you know the years of introduction. Which year did the first revision come out? I have an 1988 AE92 GT-i 3 door hatch and buying an AE86 from 1985. Maybe both have the straight gear designs :o
Great video. unfortunately both of the links to buy the best design pump are broken. Looking online and trying to determine which ones have the good design. Any idea how to tell? SKP SKOM147?
hey bro, nice and informative video, thanks for sharing. just wanna ask if i can just get by having to put toda gears into my original aw11 4agze oil pump housing? not sure if the additional thickness (assuming toda is 9.5mm thick) will fit, or ill need to get a silvertop oil pump housing/aisin?
20 valve blacktop from '95 to '00 has the best design - thicker oil pump gears :)
i did not know this.. keepem coming!
love it. keep em coming man!
the aisin OPT-036 oil pump has the rounded 9.9mm pump gears. if you cant find a toyota branded one, aisin made oil pumpe for toyota so this is your best bet for a replacement
Where can i find this type of oil pump?
what about the pumps on the black top 20v? aren't those different in some way or is ithe same gear setup just has the extra stuff for the hydrolic tensioner?
+Bigbacon The pump body is slightly different so they are not interchangeable, but the gears inside are the same as the final design.
The Blacktop pump has the same internals but it has the mounting studs for the timing belt pulleys hydraulic tensioner and a small cut out to clear it.
*Super important question: when installing a new oil pump for the 4A, is it necessary to open it up and have the gears lubricated before installation?
It's not necessary. It does help during the first few seconds of the first start, but it's not necessary. The factory service manual doesn't specify such a procedure. You can oil the internals a bit without opening it, pour oil in and turn the gear manually a few times, it's better than nothing.
I use assembly lube for all my builds including pumps
So... Do u recommend to use last revision on all 4age versions? Im thinking to change mine
As I explained in the video, the latest version is the best and most durable one. You may be fine with the older versions for hundreds of thousands of miles on a stock engine driven normally on the street, but for an engine that will see a lot of hard driving it's a good idea to upgrade.
@@d4a mine is the late big port assembled at 88 (toyota celica gen4 t160), it has almost 170k kms (105,63mi), and pressure seems to work fine yet, but is not a bad idea to replace all pumps from the engine. Thank you so much for your help, you've got a new sub 😁👍
Very nice video.. you re a 4age máster.
My oil pump is the anomaly, it has the rounded section but the 7mm 2nd gen gears
okay so what is the part number for the aisin pump? PLEASE?
Does this apply to 4afe engines as well Also, how about about the 7afe?
Anyone have the part number to the better bigger silvertop gear oil pump???
Can you used a 4age oil pump on a 4afe?
For what it's worth, I recently bought an oil pump from prime driven and it is the last revision
Excellent! Analysis. Thank you very much. Which branch is your favorite? 4age? or you have another one?
Antegas Hindoyan Thank you. I like all engines. I really like the 4age, and I know most about it.
would these some of these oil pump designs have issues fitting the crank angle sensor you made?? or do all of them fit?
All fit :)
Awesome very informative
Is there any difference between a 4afe and a ge blocks?
Both blocks are pretty much the same. The difference is in the head.
What is the part number the final desi
Can I install the 4AGE oil pump in a 3A-C?
(1981-1982 Tercel engine)
+evoTimer Hmm not sure to be honest. It will fit a 4A block, not sure how much the 4a and 3a are different. Sorry I couldn't be more of a help.
Like!!! Of course.
Excellent thanks
What’s the name of the song?
Thank you.
+Chronicles of K. Toyoda No, thank you :)
driving 4 answers Are you on the MR2OC?
+Chronicles of K. Toyoda I'm on the mr2 board. Mr2.com
driving 4 answers I'm hardly on the board, you should think about joining the Facebook MR2OC as well, and help spread your vid's there as well.
How do I check if it's the sensor..
Good job
I got stuck with an sr5 with a ae92 swap bought a rebuild kit for it and belts didn't aline
Need help
FYI - The 5SFE oil pump is better than the 3S-GTE oil pump.
Thank you!
+Ryan Dull Thank you for watching :)
If one were to buy a brand new oil pump from Toyota, would it most likely be the latest revision?
Yes it would
Thank U
Why haven’t I subscribed? Thanks for the heads up
4age16 can instal 4a fe oil pump?
Yes, it's the same block (4a) but I don't recommend that.
@@d4a why?
@@novskikepes411 Most 4afe pumps are weaker with less flow as the 4afe obviously doesn't rev as high and isn't made with the same kind of usage in mind.
Thanks alot bro
thanks man
am i mistaken or is that cro accent?
+Zvonimir Bobic Not cro but very very close :)
i know already..(just watchin your vid driving to mostar :))..seen some of your content..wow!..you r very enthusiastic young man..i m impressed..keep up the good work
Zvonimir Bobic Will do. Thank you. Stay tuned :) more cool stuff is in the pipeline.
Will the 4age oil pump work on a 7afe 7age?
Here's a nice explanation: www.matrixgarage.com/content/oil-pump-differences-4a-ge-vs-7a-fe
They don't line up perfectly, but it isn't a big deal usually, and you can port match.
