Is the STI still a relevant driver's car or are we due for a massive change? Also I was wrong about steering. Only the WRX got the electronic assist. Huge thanks to Patreon supporters for making this content possible
I believe we’re due for a massive change. As much as I like the exterior and interior, the powertrain is very outdated. The EJ25 at this point is like.. 20 years old? Maybe for the next gen they use the FA24 from the Ascent.
Anyways, how’s your day going?
bet itll become an SUV...
Got a new ‘20 STI before they mess it up with too much tech and maybe a non-manual transmission. It is fantastic to be able to still be a new car with hydraulic steering.
I have a 2018 STI... I get it, it’s outdated but at the same time that’s what I love about it. It feels so good like a 90s sports car.
AWD cars will never be the best "driver's choice" to me for so many reasons, compared to FR, but I'm glad people enjoy them.
"Today 300hp is like, everything, normal"
Me in my 60hp Golf : yea, for sure
By now, every sportscar enthousiast knows that it's not Hp alone what counts, it's the power/weight ratio. Put that same 300 hp in a 1200kg classic Impreza GT, and see what happens....
me in my 150hp focus: ok 😞
Me with no car😞
@@JesusOfPaign me in my 2.5i outback “what’s 300hp” 😂
It is outdated as fu... waiting for new Elantra N.
It's not about how fast you get there, it's about how much fun it is on the way
Love my 2019. It's modded and makes around 370whp but it's been awesome since day 1. No other car has made me smile every time I drive it.
What mods are you rockin? I’m stock with an axle back and scared of hurting it😂
@@willpittman7593 don’t be afraid!! If you’re nervous about ringland, know any year model pre 2018 has extended warranty upwards of 100k miles for ringland. And 18+ has better internals. Also fwiw, only the bad instances of this car blowing up are documented on the Internet. The greater majority has had little to no issues. Amazing car :)

Glad Subaru still making the STi.
I plan on purchasing an STI for my first car off the dealer
Not for Germany... :(
it's getting a nice redesign in the next year model too. looks mostly the same but a new engine and more power
If they offered a small light na v8 paired with awd I’d buy in an instant
@@amador4417 As a first car you may be better off with the simple WRX. The FA20 is a more reliable engine, that can still make lottsa HP if you want to
“When you get older, 0 to 60 time means less and less” - Agree 100%
Honestly, id say Horsepower. But 0-60 works maybe better
nahhh..not for me.
im 20 and still dont care about 0-60
I’m old now so yeah - I like a little shove, but now I like the ease of driving and the handling/surefootedness 😎
I disagree to a point. Sure I'm only 24 but I live around highways. Everything is a highway here. I use 0-60 and more importantly 5-60 to understand how much space I need to safely merge on the highway.

I was anti subaru, having owned an evo 8 and 10 for nearly 8 years, I just bought a 2021 sti. Fantastic daily.
I was a massive evo fan when I was younger but as they became extinct, I became the biggest Subaru fan. I love the rally competition
As a fan of the 2007 Subaru WRX STI (and all wrx's to be honest) this video has made my day
same! i love the 2007 sti since it's the last one to have that classic design
but i really like this one as well. people are looking forward to 2022 sti concept but i personally don't like it
it becomes unrecognizable in my opinion
I have a Hawkeye wrx:D
Oh really I couldn't tell you liked subaru bro
I have a JDM Forester and everything he mentioned about the fun factor in driving a Subaru is spot on 👌

The automotive and enthusiast world is just a better place thanks to these cars.
Look at the contrast between that blue and the sea of grey white and black! One of the best blues out there
The current gen sti disproves the 'new is always better (or necessary)' theory. It's a total blast to drive. If they never improve it, it's still be a blast to drive. And it's certainly fast enough, as is, to scare the crap out of yourself on public roads.
Ill say this much, going from my 2004 sti, to the 2013 sti, to now the 2020 sti. The 2020 is the best STI hands down.
@@leka_the_prophet My wife as the 2016 (almost the same as 2020). It's a fantastic driving car. But it doesn't look as good as either of the concept cars...
@@bikebudha01 Ah see for me, I never really cared much for the concept cars. Glad to hear you guys enjoy the 2016! Lmk if I can share some Subaru Ambassador goodies with you
5:48 is extremely accurate - by the time you get to the speed limit, or even slightly beyond, it's all over and now you're back to cruising at speeds that won't attract law enforcement. And you didn't even use more than a fraction of what is available to you. At least in cars like the Civic type-R (or the STI), you can enjoy the run from 0 - whatever because the driving experience (and the manual transmission) engages you every step of the way.
Your car reviews are so well done. As a current 10th gen Si owner, I'm constantly fawning over the Type-R. Now I want an STI.
I’m the same way cause I got a s2000 and I need a daily and I want a type r but the sti is calling me

I have a bone stock 2020 STI and I love every minute with it. I agree with the exhaust too, it's loud enough for its power and it has a great rumble as is.
7:20 I believe the STI still uses hydraulic steering. It definitely did at the start of this generation.
You’re right! The wrx got the electric assist and the STI kept the hydraulic. Seems a lot of magazines botched this as well 😂. My bad
STI is definitely still analog hydraulic steering. Fantastic!

I've been watching this video multiple times now, and it hasn't gotten old on me yet.
Really, really want this car.
5:11 stoked to hear you say this! I've never once felt the need for more power in my STi. I always get a chuckle when people yell about this car being slow haha
Exactly and also 400whp is nothing for an sti so if you wanted it wouldn’t be a problem to get more power in the future. Could even push 500-600whp if you wanted to sacrifice reliability a bit
@@stefan_4508 that’s a my problem. I love to beat on my sti and I’m afraid going for more power will destroy my engine too fast.
I've owned my sti for 5 years now. I definitely would like to see more power. 300hp is nothing for modern cars nowadays. I LOVE my sti, but the top end is extremely lackluster. 1st gear to 3rd is great, but trying to pull from 4th is like I'm in a prius. 🤣 I'm doing an engine swap for an ej iag closed deck longblock, forged internals etc. Instead of buying a new sti, im going to put that money into my old one and have 400whp+
@@stefan_4508 my guy lol. 400whp is a substantial money pit. fuel system alone is going to be $2000-2500, the turbo, an extra $1200-1400, the downpipe, $500, the intake/air upgrades, another 600. and that's cutting literally every corner in doing that build. not to mention your tune which will run you up another 1k. realistically to get 400whp in ANY boxer engine, in a reliable form, expect to pay I would say no less than 8k and then "sacrifice reliability a bit" 500-600whp, Idk how long you think those piston ringlands will last, I've seen them fail in 5k miles of a brand new off the lot EJ :( sad but true.
@@stefan_4508 are you smoking crack? if not, must be some good H. My girlfriend has a built Sti. blew it up at 360whp on stock block, rebuilt it with pistons and rods, made 400whp for 2 months before it grenaded. spent 18k on a new turbo setup and engine and it makes 480whp with almost no potential for more. Subarus are slow, unreliable, and absolute money pits. If you have 50k to throw at it, have fun.

I personally own the 2020 version of this car and I legitimately almost never put it in sports sharp mode. This car has realistic power and I think the AWD system and handling of the car makes up for the speed. Also this is a great car to have if you live in snowy areas and you still want a fast dependable car. Although, if you do buy this car try to get a set of smaller tires. In my experience the only times I get stuck is when the snow gets packed inside the wheel wells.
5:11 yesss thank you!! I have a stage 2 F80 pushing nearly 600 crank and it’s a literal rocket ship. It’s gotten to a point now where it is too fast, it’s not fun anymore unless I’m on a track because I can’t go fast without hitting like 110 or 120 which is way too fast for public roads. These cars that are “slow” are so much more fun for backroad driving
I’ve driven a stock one thru country backroads, that stock 300hp is perfect. It’s not too fast and definitely not slow. When I get mine a few bolt ons and a tune is perfect
Chris Pantoja
Exactly! I hope you get one soon and enjoy it!
The WRX STI may legitimately be one of my favorite cars, and I think it looks great on grey along with that blue.
I test drove one of these a year ago and it’s such a wonderful throwback to fun, old school cars. It’s not the fastest, smoothest, or most comfortable car but it made me smile the entire time and that’s what actually matters with cars like this.
I love your videos man they bring me so much joy
Thanks Man!
What a wholesome comment.
I own a 2019 and I am well aware the platform may be outdated. And everyone in the comments says it needs an upgrade, but until you sit in the car and drive it yourself, your opinion will change. It's truly a drivers car, it's very raw and fun. There's a reason it's been around for so long, because it really gives you a fun experience. I plan on doing some upgrades soon and it's really fun.
Also, I have a nameless catback and plan to get a downpipe. It will probably be much louder. Some people hate the noise, well I hate people who drive with their high beams on and don't use turn signals. Loud pipes keep people paying attention, I think it's a good thing to an extent.
That beautiful color stands out in that grey sea of bleargh.
Especially in the rain.
I think this is the only review where I didn’t mind someone talking in the background. Nice video!
I personally always loved them! this seems like a nicely balanced sports with no bs that you could drive everyday
2003 WRX Bugeye was by far the most fun car I've ever owned. I would own another one in a heart beat.
I just wanna drive. Agree ! Im not buying the eletronics, im buying the driving experience.
I’ve had a 2016 WRX since 2016 and after 60,000 miles I still love it. I think it strikes a very nice balance between analog and digital that will be difficult to find in the near future. I also think the 2.0 with the smaller, twin scroll turbo in the WRX is better for regular driving than the 2.5 in the STi. Basically I’m saying if you can find one in good condition used, it would be a great option for a lot of upstart car enthusiasts.
Just make sure to buy a second set of wheels and tires (one winter and one summer set) to get the most out of the car year round.
Very well said, buy STI used hopefully still under warranty and buy WRX new with FA engine for the win, all the torque and hp you need below 60mph

As a past owner of a 17 sti. God they are such special cars. I miss mine constantly: so comfy so amazing sounding and so good looking. They last if you take care of them! The comment of you should be driving one is true. IF you can stomach the insanely poor fuel economy if you drive it like you want to all the time. It’s no fun to drive it slow lol
Comfy is not a word I often see used to describe the STI lol
Just bought a 2020 STI myself actually, and yeah it's not the fastest thing out there at all but god damn is it an enjoyable car to drive. My main complaint about it stock was that you can barely even hear it, but with a reasonable catback exhaust (Invidia Q300, one of the quietest ones out there) on, its perfect.
What you said about enjoying “slower” vehicles with personality rather than a quick numb sprint to 60 is exactly why i traded my mk7r for a brz ts a few years back. Now i find myself looking at a low milage sti again, awd in New England is a game changer.

I've owned an 07 WRX for 10 years and rented a few of these and the confidence of the STI drivetrain is worth it, especially with the 6-speed. Its happy place is carving sweeping canyons out west at double the 35 mph speed limit with total confidence.
I have a 07 sti and I agree. She just loves to glide on the twisty roads. I laugh sometimes because the only time I do the speed limit is when the weather is extreme. That’s not a brag, just how well the car handles and feels. Around 140 it gets scary tho... I can’t lie.

Great video. A true gem of a car and the last affordable analog car.
Wonderful car stock...the STI 6 speed is super strong...unlight the early wrx 5 speeds....
Best drivers car left under 85k.
When you start to learn, you are in fact a subaru fan.😁 Also they may not be the fastest but they are by far one of the best sounding cars out there.
The STI's are just fun to drive especially in the canyons and mountain roads. It just handles the curves so well.
Love the mechanical feel/connection of my 2019 STI. I had previously 2012 STI hatchback that I modified with Nvidia TBE and intake. Was FAST and loud. After several years I missed the stock sound to be honest. I wish my 2019 had been available in hatchback form factor. Been driving Subarus since 2005 because I love how honest they feel. My other car is 2006 BMW Z4 M Coupe. When it is wet can feel dangerous if throttle is applied to aggressively. Subaru feels so planted.
One of my fave things about these cars is that they ask you when your birthday is, so it can display a cute little happy birthday message for you when the time comes! I probably would have been looking hard at one of these if my budget was 30k instead of 20k.
Got me a 2020 STi over a year ago. Never have i enjoyed driving so much. :)

that turbo lag might be aided by what sounds like a pretty heavy fly wheel. the rev hang sounds insane. Edit: and you mention it literally 10 seconds later.
Rev hang isn't bad, he's just not used to the clutch and change feel, and is guilty of the slow revvy changes that everyone does when they first drive the new old sti
My 2020 does not rev hang?
No rev hang in the stock 2019.... It is perfect.
The rev hang can be tuned out. It is designed in on purpose to more efficiently burn the fuel, since it is port-injected. A very common mod people make to these is to tune out that rev hang.

@@jovanyrodriguez5780 the jdm engines had elh as well
I had a 2005 STI for almost 6 years. Sold it and bought a brand new 2017 WRX just over a year later but couldn't really get behind it. Even though it had the FA engine which was more refined, efficient and quicker to spool, I found it kind of sterile overall as a car. With all its flaws, the EJ engine somehow has quite a bit of character and appeal to a certain crowd of people. Call me crazy but I missed the old school, smack you in the face power delivery of the slower spooling STI. The hard edged rally nature of it. Not to mention the transmission/drivetrain on the STI is clearly much more capable than the open-diffed WRX. I drove the WRX for about a year before I sold it and got a 2011 WRB STI hatchback.
I'm envious! I'm actually in the market for a 2011-'13 STi hatch.

Seeing this video 3 years later, in a parking lot I visit occasionally is so sick because I love your videos and have been subbed for a little bit, never knew you were this close to my home it's so cool
my dad bought a 2020 with the wrx spoiler, and he's loving it, and gotta say i do too. Agree with everything you say about it
EDIT: Turns out Tedward already did a whole video on this with "Slow Cars are More Fun"
There are two approaches to 'enough power'
1. Ability to go quick when wrung out at wide open throttle, even at legalish speeds
2. Always having enough hp/torque to do what you want as quickly as possible
The first is more fun to drive, in my opinion. It's fun running a car to a screaming redline in an office park. It can be loud and brash. We're also pressured into the second one by how we connect status to how much HP you have.
I replaced my old MX-5 Miata with a Mazdaspeed turbo. It was way less fun.
When I bought my 3-series, I test drove the 335i and the 328i. The 4-cylinder 328i was loud and screamed and made burbles. The 6-cylinder 335i just quietly went fast, arriving very quickly at too fast. I bought the 328i and spent more money on options. It's been a ton of fun.
That said, I'm working on buying a 500hp M3 in the next couple months. I'll let you know how unfun it is.
Awesome! I love this WRX STI. I’ve always wanted this as a dream car! I would say this is an Underrated car.
Really miss the STI hatchback, but glad they are still making this legend. One of the more exciting cars on here and always nice to see a manual.
Fantastic perspective. Its funny I made a post recently echoing alot of your same thoughts. I'm more attracted to getting one of these now that I'm older and have more financial means to actually get a more powerful car. I never would've wanted to own one as my only car but having the means to have a daily, while having this as a simple, analog, year round fun car with great FEEL on the street.
I have a 2019 STI with low profile spoiler. The stock 19” wheels are heavy and impossible to clean with all the spokes. I bought 18” forged wheels from Titan7 and Michelin PS4S tires 265x35. I have fortune auto coilover suspension and a front strut tower brace. The STI is way better now, more comfortable ride and it really sticks to the road even better than it already did. I’m leaving everything else alone for now. It really is a very fun car and I don’t expect that I’ll ever get rid of it.
2:13 what is great is you can spec a STI without the wing, which I personally like as it really improves the look, but most people go for the wing just because, you know, why not lol
Haha I didn’t know that. I always thought people just took them off
I really don't like the wing on the Sti, But I find it really weird to not have it.
That turbo lag is exactly why most STi's are modified.
You need to replace the BOV and decrease the inner diameter of the downpipe. This will shave some horsepower but the turbo lag will be non existent. I would recommend HKS or Greddy. Both better than stock, Greddy offers slightly better performance in reducing lag but HKS sound is nothing short of iconic.
You can take the factory downpipe off, and insert a piece of pipe that fits inside. that will reduce the inner diameter of the pipe. You may have to buy different sizes and do trial and error. Make sure you use the same material and tac weld it inside which should be 304 stainless steel, a 2 inch long piece should be enough. There is no need to buy an aftermarket one, it is literally just a pipe with very specific detentions and bends, once your happy with it, have a welder weld it in properly.
In short, You will push lower horsepower numbers (-2% to 4%whp), but your track time will be significantly better due to the sharper throttle control. Launches will be around 0.25 Gs more powerful, 0.60 times will be around 5.8 (Down from 6.0), assuming you havnt modded anything else. Your quarter mile time will varrie. It will depend on how well the pipework turned out, but I had a guy shave 0.5 seconds off the 1/4.
I am just blowing smoke up your ass I don't even have a turbocharged car. I have no idea if what I said is true or not but it sounded good. Hope you got a laugh out of it. Who knows, it might work lol
I've had a modified BRZ for almost 6 years. Driven the STi quite a few times, while they seem cool I'd definitely have to buy it new to ensure it wasn't beat on, and for a $40k price tag I'm almost always going to want something else.
been through a few of your videos now and wanted to say I appreciate your enthusiasm for what you're doing. actually testing a 2020 WRX STi in the morning and it's nice to get all this information from you before I get into it.
not an authentic review there were no vapes being used
My asthma 😩
Legit the entire street smells of vape whenever a WRX or BRZ drives by, it's like they burn vape juice instead of gas.
@@vanisshen4467 Probably running on E85 😂
I like these "slow" around 5s to 60 sports cars videos of yours the most, very enjoyable. Hope to see more of these :D
even if the car is stock having an exhaust is nice if you like the sound. If I owned one of these I would only do exhaust and enjoy it in stock form
I’d prolly rice it up a bit. Make it my own, yknow
@@RedLightKi yeah. All depends on what you want it to do
Intake as well so you can hear the turbo spool up way more and a tune
hi Tedward! Great review of the STI. Still has hydraulic steering and that raw feeling that you dont' get in most modern sports cars. Everyone wants to numb the driving experience down
Yup corrected the steering mistake in the pinned comment when published
Handling is more important than power for sure! Big power can make for "easy" fun, but I think low-power, good-handling cars are rewarding. Not that the STi is slow, certainly not.
I'd rather have halfway decent power and great handling like in an sti than just straight-line tire-tearing grunt and nothing else like in a dodge or something
@@ianholmquist8492 Yeah that'd be a different kind of fun. If we're talking V8 American cars I'd definitely take a Camaro SS because it really does handle amazing well.
Im 53, on my third Subaru and this car appeals to me at my age. Not bad priced second hand now in the UK but maybe because its high road tax and we have stupid price fuel here these days. I wouldn’t drive it like an idiot but the sound, the grip in all weathers the whole experience, driving at normal speeds would make every journey fun.
Yeah it’s amazing how a car which basically is the same size features power driving characteristics for decades and it’s still a hit. Subaru sells outback’s, foresters, cross treks then its the wrx/Sti sedan. Totally different market than the usual. I hope they sell make them for years to come and keep than manual alive
Dude you are so on point about caring less about 0-60 and not being able to use crazy power. I have a friend who has an E63S who wants to tune it. Like really dude, 603 HP isn't lively enough? We're on the same wavelength you and me. I'd rather have a car with 200hp and drive it at 9/10 vs a car with 500 and drive it at 4/10. In all honestly I feel around 300HP is really the sweet spot for the street. It's not "slow" but engaging enough and faster than the majority of the stuff on the road.
In regard to the WRX specifically I'm going to make an unpopular opinion (this coming from a 4 year WRX owner); the car should also be offered with a DCT. While the manual is great, I find it hard to believe that subaru never developed a DCT when even Mitsubishi managed one on the EVO. The achilies heel of the WRX is it's top mount turbo and associated lag, but when you have a DCT the engine can flat throttle shift and thus it doesn't lose boost between gears. The result would likely be an increase in performance that I reckon would take nearly a second (or likely more) off of the 0-60 and quarter mile times. Yes it wouldn't be the enthusiasts choice, but for an under $40K track toy it would be hard to beat. Especially when you consider it has an honest to goodness symmetrical AWD with a variable center diff and not a haldex system.
the more i look at the new sti's the more they're startying to grow on me,sure my heart will always be with 93-2004 models but i wouldnt mind it as a daily
As much as I personally love the bug eyes, try driving this one, or even a base wrx if you can. It really is fun even if it looks kinda bland (excluding the spoiler).
@@derangedemu i'd have to one day,but i doubt i'll enjoy it as much
I went the opposite way. When they first came out, I was in love. These days, I find them too simple-looking, and unless they have the wing, I often confuse them with Corollas. The 2014 STi hatch will always be my favourite.
@@southpaw117 idk i personally just hate modern cars, too many safety things too much help,i prefer the raw drive
I just bought a new STI in February and my first Subaru. Having owned a lot of performance platforms in the past this is a great car. I put the Cobb stage 1 on my 2nd week of ownership. It makes a huge difference in torque in the 2500-5300 rpm range. Very useable in the lower gears and imo makes it into how it should have come from the factory from the getgo. Flex fuel next...
12:00 I believe it is the old 5spd out of the WRX that liked to blow up but I think the 6spd was always bulletproof. Correct me if that's wrong.
That's correct! The 6-speed in STis is often left stock (clutch upgraded ofc) on 700 horsepower cars. The 5-speed is often becomes prone to breaking when driven mildly spirited at anything beyond about 350 WHP, and the more mileage on it, the worse it gets. My 280 WHP 5MT Legacy GT wagon's synchros are pretty worn out at 218K.
And then there's the 6-speed in the WRX, not to be confused with the STI's 6-speed.
I can tell you really understand what the STI is trying to do. Loved this video
sometimes its better when things dont change :)
STIs and the BRZ/86 are phenomenal drivers cars. They nail the perfect ratio of more fun than a regular car but not too much to be boring on public roads. You can ride the cars hard in everyday used and have a blast. The crazy horsepower cars are instant to jail when you get even a little rowdy.
This is so nice on the snow. Everyone should experience it.
Correct 100%.
👍 For the avatar. 🇸🇪
@@K03sport thanks. Best cars but no more
My favorite time of the year to drive mine is in the winter. Summer is fun, but winter is more fun. And yes, I have separate summer (Michelin PS4S) and winter tires (Nokian Hakkapeliita R3).
haha good profilname bro 😊😂 Saab and Subies are life
the sound alone is just beautiful
I wanna buy one of the wrx, I just love how they sound and feel, amazing cars, thanks for the video made my dad!
I really appreciate the way these cars drive. I’ve driven my buddies STI before and they’re really reminiscent of how my Charger drives.
Wish this would come in hatchback ver. I have 2009 wrx sti still gonna own it until subaru would come out with the new hatch
Good stuff. I just finished a 900 mile road trip from Fl to Va and I was surprised how comfortable and non-taxing my ‘20 STI was and the curvy roads of Virginia are magical in this car.
I got my STi with a factory low profile spoiler/lip lol, didn't want extra attention from ricers and cops
Not a bad choice. Sometimes the attention I get with mine can be annoying since I have the big factory wing...
@@ezekiel8487 Exactly why I didn't lol
@@roscoes-wetsuit1 I can just take the wing off at any time but I like it. So tough balls for the haters LOL
Lol that ricers thing though. My friends uncle has an old stock lancer and young kids in their Hondas always try to race him when all he's doing is going to the store for some beer lmfao.
Currently have 04 wrx. It’s getting old and has high mileage. But I love it. Can’t wait to bring in money from my investments. A 2018-2020 sti will be my next daily
