I bought a 2021 STI coming from my 2015 Evo Final Edition and stock for stock the STI is so much better. But the Evo makes a tremendous amount of power for cheap when you start modding. One thing I think you guys forgot to mention is the 2019+ STIs come with the Type RA short block so they're a bit beefier. People are starting to hit 450+ whp without worry now with the proper mods.
@Bry Zeer no need to be insulting, everyone has their preference. I did put a deposit down on the new MK8 but the dealership couldn't give me proper information so I made my decision and I'm happy with it. Take your fanboy shit somewhere else.
@Bry Zeer you must be a Hitler youth. So negative for zero reason 😂. Not trying to change anyone's perspective or opinion on a vehicle. And for starters no one here ever said shit about the Golf R. As a car enthusiast I know it's a pretty badass car. Again I was looking into one but personally but it didn't work out and chose an STI because it is a raw affordable fun car. The Golf R is an awesome bridge for someone who is looking for a more adult vehicle that still has great performance.
Man I wondered for about a month if I made the right choice over the Golf or Civic SI, or even the RS as they’re all pretty close. Something about the Subie I just love. Don’t know if it was the life long desire to get one or what, but anytime I open that garage door and start it up - it’s a feeling you can’t describe to anyone. Hope you enjoy it man!
The reason why I love my Subaru WRX, I was looking to reset my trip odometer for the first time and I was hunting in the menus, instead i realized it was on the dash like every car from 30 years ago and one click and bam its reset.
I bought a brand new 2015 WRX base... ended up trading it in for a used 2016 WRX STI Limited w/o wing. They're both great cars, but they are entirely different cars. The STI is totally worth the extra money if you really want what makes them special. Hydraulic power steering, mechanically linked 6-speed, old-school turbo, and that drive-train. LSD's front and rear with controllable center diff. I really wish they would have come out with a Wilderness Wagon version before they move on to the new platform. I would have to have one.
I don't agree. You could buy an older one and get everything you have described for less money and with more character. These make no sense as new cars. You will eventually realize this and sell like we all did.
@@cwx8 even though I don’t agree with having an older sti if you can afford the new one with a warranty, he is right. The older ones, especially GD chassis ones are more rigid feeding and actually give an engaging experience since they’re wheel base is much smaller and nimble. To top it off, they’re becoming more rare to find the GD chassis models which have driven up the values. But it is more of preference lol, I have a 05 legacy GT wagon so I don’t have much experience in an STI to validate any opinion
The wilderness idea you mentioned reminds me of the Gravel Express in the GC/GF generation, they come with the WRX powertrain with all the off-road goodies
@@cwx8 I wasn't really commenting on new vs used. Like I said, I bought my STI used after having a new WRX. This was for a number of reasons including cost, and particular features of the pre-refresh model years. Unfortunately, I already had to sell because I moved abroad. Not sure what I'll buy when I move back to the states, but a 2021 STI may be on my list.
The things that people complain about: old school engine, lack of tech, narrow powerband, notchy transmission, stiff ride, etc are the reasons I love it.
@@Chris-hq7nl i only had one, a 2014 STI brand new. Like I said the engine was a POS. It was extremely disappointed because I loved everything else about the car. I also had a big argument with the dealership because they claimed it was normal to burn oil, mine was smoking blue, not normal.
@@yvonjasser It’s hit or miss on them sometimes. The EJ’s all do burn oil to an extent, some more than others. Some of it, from my understanding, is how the engine was broken in and some of it is just individual engines.
Might be incorrect but i believe the reason Subaru originally dropped out/still hasn't rejoined WRC is that they don't have a small enough engine. iirc WRC requires a 1.6l
I really want the sti hatch, but Subaru can't just make a car with everything right. The levorg is great, but it's CVT only (and not for us in north america). The new WRX has a better interior imo, but then you have way too much plastic cladding. The BRZ looks great, but I wish it has the new subaru interior instead of a toyota-ish interior and a turbo. I think I speak for most subaru enthusiasts when I say all of these things. It's like subaru is not listening to us, the subaru fan boys.
It's really worth the extra 10 grand. Better transmission, brakes, wing, suspension, DCCT console. Two completely different cars. Hell even the engines are different.
I bought my 2020 STI for the fact that it feels like the old Japanese cars that I grew up with, just enough tech with out changing the overall feel of the car.
Got my 2021 STi mid August, was thinking this would be the last gen of the good old classic feel car, enthusiast’s car! Been a dream of mine for years, happy to finally own one!
2020 Sti series.white owner here and I absolutely love my car. It’s not that fast it’s not very economical and gets a lot of negative attention. It’s an experience every time I drive it. Makes you focus on actually driving and what’s go on around you. My kids love the back seat and the rumble always puts them to sleep. Love my STI and have no regrets buying it.
@@tylerbuzbee8566 The wing creates a lot of hate from people. I think the term is “boy racer”. It also bring’s a lot of attention form people with big V8’s that want to flex, Particularly mustangs in my area. I know my cars not “fast” really nowadays most SUV’s absolutely smoke it but it’s nostalgic for me. I always wanted an STI as a kid and plan on keeping it forever.
Bought my 2020 as a leftover in March 2021 and its such a fantastic car. Honestly even in the dry, taking it to a nice backroad or mountain road and the grip the car can deliver is out of this world, so so fun.
The EJ257 has a great feeling that builds power progressively. All the new motors want you to have full torque immediately but it takes away from some of the fun of revving the vehicle. For looks and old school reliable technology I think this will be better then the new gen.
This is what will determine if I get the new generation sti or not. I buy a turbo car, because it feels like a turbo car, not because it feels like an NA car. I don't want the extra complexity (which means more parts to fail) with out the turbo feel.
A higher hp 6 cylinder STI would be nice they had the same engines for years it's time for an upgrade especially considering the car STI is getting out done by so many brands.
@@matth7029 Go drive a loud 90s turbo car and tell me again you don't love the progression of the power and the progression sound of the turbo spooling faster, turbo lag is really fun
@@matth7029 Progressive power build up is great for track, last thing you want to do is have that instant power and torque break your traction mid corner as you're trying to feather the accelerator. It doesn't make sense to need the power instantly. Even on the street, do you really need instant power to go from red light to red light bumper to bumper lol
@@matth7029 Lag doesn't really matter when you're in the power band, from a dead stop until you hit boost yes but if you're on a track you'll always be at higher rpms making boost. Disadvantage for a drag race yeah, but for every day use and track there isn't anything wrong with lag.

I got my '21 STI last February after ordering one in December of 2020 because I knew the next gen was on the way and I wanted to appreciate the current one for what it is before it's gone. Loving it! ❤️ ✌️
Nice! I did the same and I'm so glad. The engine gets so much hate but I love the old ej 257. They just love to Rev and sound amazing. With proper maintenance they last too.
0-60s, 1/4 mile, and power numbers don't matter for this type of car, it's about the analog feel and driving emotion. Glad auto journalists are finally getting it. Last chance to buy an instant classic of a type of car that will no longer exists. If you get it, get the WING!
@@aspecreviews 2014 and before dont have, they allow left foot braking and abs disable with a fuse removal with no limp mode, these are the real analog sti

@@joseandra9938 i am in the opposite seat. I drive a 2019 STI, and can attest of the super analog/connected/racy feel , but getting shaken 24/7 gets old after 3 yrs. Currently shopping for a Golf R or bmw 340 for some more plush suspensions.
Still have my 04 sti after over 10 years as my DD. Such a fun car to drive, all other cars I've tested in the past were not as good/fun so I never sold it.
I had a brand new 21 STI. I was the only owner. Sold it at 1200 miles after proper break in. It didn’t feel special enough to me. So I’ll be looking out for a 11-14 STI hatchback when I pay off my truck.
This video was the deciding factor in me seeking out a buying a 2021 STI. I watched the review from 2018 and y'all didn't have too many nice things to say about the car. That you guys revisited it four years later after test driving a hundred other cars... and saying how great it is in winter (with the right tires!). I live in the Pacific Northwest- we have all four seasons, and having an AWD car that is this good in all conditions makes me very, very happy. I love the fact that this car won't automatically brake, won't play with the steering when I'm on the highway, it won't beep at me when both hands are not on the wheel. Like Jacob, I hate having a car where I can say "Hey Subaru, warm up my butthole" and it turns on the seat heat... bleh. I guess I'm just getting old, because I just want a car that is fun to drive, and rewards me for driving well. Stirring the gears, heel-tow shifting, understeer... the New generation cars take mediocre drivers and make them better, but they keep good drivers from being great.
I bought the STI 2018 brand new and got it early in agust 2017! I’ve had zero issues! I love car and I can literally sell it for almost the price I bought it new! Highly recommend this car if you love JDM they are so much fun on the mountains and the track! And they are made to push them hard!
I bought my 2019 STI for the same reasons that you listed. I knew that this was going to be the type of car that will never be made again. Old school driving feel with a modern but simple infotainment system. It's almost like a Restomod from the factory.
I have a 2019 STi and I love it. I've wanted one since the STi first came to the US (I had an original model year WRX, my first new car), but adult responsibilities conspired to prevent that until recently. Anyway, I drive the car everyday to work, in rush hour, in all weather conditions. I've driven it across the state a few times. It's bumpy, aggressive, fast, and just flat out FUN to drive.
Id rather have the interior of an Economy Car and them spending the time and Money to engineer great engines, transmissions, AWD system. If it Had a luxury interior and the great tech it wouldnt be attainable anymore. They Cut Costs at the right places
i'm really glad you threw in attainable, i hate when people say "omgggg the 2015 mercedes' cla is my dream car" like what isn't dream car supposed to be something that's a low chance of getting unless u grind life hard😂😂😂
@@bitronicc1887 A. When did i define working 90+ hrs a week as "grinding in life hard", it was a general statement LOL, B. When i refer to dream car i'm talking about a million dollar car, half a mill car, stuff that's not attainable through 120/hr, i was generally giving a statement of grinding life hard, which can also mean to be focused, not "work like a bitch til u die" , next time rather than assuming, ask what my definition of it is:)
When I was a kid, I used to watch rally racing a lot and after watching this video, I realized that I have to get one so just a week ago I did! three 2021 STis with barely any miles just sitting at the Subaru lot and snagged the exact same one in this video 🙇♂️
This generation of STI has only gotten better looking in time for me, forget the mileage being it's main detractor, this car is still the emotional connection to the rally cars of old in every way. I'd say it's high time I go get one of these at least for a while.
They hold their value too if you don't mod them tastelessly or beat heck out of them. My 21 base with 10k miles books for 4k more than when I bought it. Though I suspect the price will start to go down for the VA sti across the board in the coming year. In any case I won't sell mine. Puts a smile on my face every time I drive.
I cannot believe you have been reviewing cars for this long and only now have really truly understood what it’s like to drive an STI in the winter. 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽❄️
Appreciate this video guys! The STi is truly the last generation of the analog world and I'll forever miss this!!! On a side note, as a Kia Stinger GT owner I had a lot of fun in our Toronto snow storm a week ago. Long live performance AWD sedans!
That’s what I’m talking about! Huge HUGE enthusiasm and fun! I’m never gonna get a Suburu, never see that much snow, but watching both the Straight Pipes having fun made my salad lunch less boring. Ok, enough already, I know.
I picked up a '20 limited w/o wing and commuted with it for 1.5 years, mirroring your experience: every single trip rowing those gears at any speed is a joy. With remote work it makes the occasional outings serious fun. Enjoy that '21!
I used to own a pretty highly modified 2006 Subaru Legacy GT (very similar 2.5 turbo engine as the STI). I did a lot of power, brake and suspension mods to that car, but by a huge margin, the best modification I ever did to that car was replacing the original 5spd manual and viscous LSD rear diff with a DCCD 6spd and matching clutch LSD rear diff from an 04 STI. I cannot overstate how huge of an improvement that was. With the original 5spd, it would spin the inside front tire when powering out of hard corners (like a FWD car) and under steer under power. With the 6spd with functioning DCCD, you can select between serious grip/no drama cornering, understeer (if you lock the center diff) or full-on drift mode if you completely unlock the center diff (especially with the older STIs because they have more of a rear torque bias). The proper STI 6spd is also an incredibly strong transmission whereas the other manuals for Subarus are pretty delicate (including the non-STI 6spd). The transmission itself makes the STI *far* superior to any WRX. Not to mention that the old school Subarus are super easy to work on and if you don’t mod the engine, they last a really, really long time.
I miss my 2020 STI honestly. Ended up selling it for profit and then buying an older wrx to daily and mod. They honestly feel so similar even though there’s such an age gap. You really can’t beat the analog feeling you get with it. No new cars like it.
@@greatestnitemare6626 depending on mods and condition prob like 30-15k ball parking it of course but that’s usually what I seen them for around here without haggling
I bought Sti in June last year, it is my 3rd Subaru Wrx first Sti. I love it, I love old school cars, also own 1990 Miata. I like the idea that I can work on my cars in my garage.
Funny, I had an ‘05 STi back in the day and loved it, daily driver, track stuff, drove it through the gnarliest weather living in the high country of CO.... had kids, sold it as it wasn’t comfortable, had a really terrible ride and wasn’t practical... the 2015 came out and I just wasn’t into it since the drivetrain really hadn’t changed but now, maybe I am nostalgic but this thing seems super appealing again, a simple, raw motor sports car in the best of the late ‘90’s rally tradition which to me, was the favorite era of the WRC. That’s why I still love it I guess, it’s like a throwback to another era but brand new with a warranty... rough around the edges, with its flaws but a damn solid drivetrain.
@@Jay-sn7wu lol ya except that doesn't apply to the sti. When you get in it and realize it feels a decade old. Then realize you can get an older one with an identical power train and drivetrain but with more character.
Disagree. There is nothing novel here in this car. You are better off with an 04 or 06 model year which is just as quick but more engaging and less fussy.
I have a 2015 Launch Edition STI that I bought new. Always wanted an STI since they came out in 2004 when I was still in college. Bought a '02 WRX sedan when I could afford it and learned to wrench on it. Great fun with snow tires. I've modded the STI a fair bit and it's a great car. But this came with drawbacks. Now that cars have progressed, it's definitely old school. Laggy engine, poor fuel economy, rough ride, loud (2 hours and my ears are shot with the turboback exhaust), modest at track days without mods. It's a hoot on backroads though. 21 year old me couldn't wait to get one. 39 year old me kind of wants something faster and more civilized. Then again, every time I get behind the wheel, it puts a smile on my face as it makes me work to go fast in it. There are few other machines that are as confidence inspiring in harsh winter conditions, either.
I owned a 19 STI Sport Tech for just over two years. 1. Best car I've ever owned in the winter / gravel. Absolutely amazing. 2. Terrible platform for the race track in the summer. 3. Reliability concerns with the engine led to me trading it in. Overall great couple years with it.
I think 2019+ came with the type RA short block engine which is more reliable than the previous ones. Also if you keep up with all the maintenance and take care of your oil and don’t do silly engine mods it could last you forever. Probably made the wrong choice now that it’s been discontinued? 🤷🏻♂️
Jay Enriquez even with proper maintenance I only expect my Sti to last me 120k or so. Honestly if I get 100k out of my ej I’m ok with that. I don’t mind my mpg it’s a lil irritating that it eats half a quart in 2500 -3k miles but whatever. I literally bought a quart of oil the same day I got it that I keep in my trunk hahaha.
I had a 2009 STI hatch and it was a blast. Cobb stage 2 with DP and it ran 12.7 @ 109mph (on snow tires) at TMP spinning all four wheels off the line. Such a fun car. Crazy to think the 2022 has the identical drivetrain to that 13 year old car!
Family dad of 2 with a 2016 STI (miss my 05). All the reasons in this video is why I have one. Get rid of the 19s and the brakes. Put some 06/06 4pots, some 15s with rallyX tires, raise it with some good struts and rallyX it for life.
I got a 2019…it’s basically the same as this one except gunmetal wheels. Great car…I specifically got it because of some of its old school characteristics, like hydraulic steering. The DCCD is awesome and you can really feel the handling improvement when you put the torque to the rear wheels. Prior to this I was daily driving an old Porsche Boxster, which I loved…this was the compromise so I had something I could put my two kids in and still have fun in the canyons. I love mine, but I’m sure the next gen will be better in every measurable way…except maybe the steering feel and exhaust note.
I’m up here in Alaska and I absolutely love my 2017 limited STI! I’ve had it for 1 year and it’s taken every bit of Alaska’s weather and terrain you can throw at it. I will never sell this car. It was my dream car when I was a kid and till this day when I’m asked what my dream car is I smile and pull out my keys! I want a Ferrari 458 in the coming years but even for a work of art like a Ferrari I still wouldn’t trade in my subie. It’s way to special to me.
Holy crap. I just noticed the 1.55M subscribers! Amazing! I bought a US-spec '20 STI limited w/o wing 22 months ago. Adding '18 wheels and properly sized winter tires for the modest US Mid-Atlantic weather has been the best move ever. I wish that a hatch was available (STI Crosstrek!!!!), but otherwise I love every single trip taken in this MT AWD sedan. Coming from a '01 Integra GS-R sedan, the clutch takes a bit of acclimation with its really high engagement point. Otherwise, rowing the gears through the rumble of the EJ power plant is a visceral joy. I'm not sure that there could have been another [reasonably priced] This is definitely a fun summer vehicle with high performance summer tires. I have yet to break grip or even feel like I've hit a cornering limit on public roads with reasonable speeds. The climate control works great I completely mirror your test drive experience with the wonderful mix of physical HVAC and touch controls. Everything serves a purpose and just works as intended. The heated Recaro seats are great. The push button and keyless touch entry are a perfect modern touch. And the blindspot / cross traffic sensor are mandatory in today's SUV packed parking lots -- it is just enough safety / collision mitigation capability for this vehicle. I have not yet played with the differential adjustments, incredibly. Having the car managed the AWD system -- especially in poor traction situations -- has been successful. I'd like to better understand the effects and benefits / detriments of moving the power bias between the front and rear wheels in real driving situations. That's really the last unexplored feature in my driving experience.
I bought one of these in June and I totally agree with your sentiment. Has a lot of cool stuff, but nothing it doesn’t truly need. I love the fact that it’s old and raw and I hate the fact that my next car is going to be the complete opposite. Wouldn’t be shocked if this ends up being sort of a collector car someday.
I have a 2004 Subaru Wrx, and I love it. It does really good in the Snow. I just Ordered the 2023 Subaru Outback Wilderness. so No matter what I Love Subaru
Bought a 2021 in WR Blue last June. Knew it would be my only chance to own the car I'd wanted since I was 13 before they ruined it. Is it perfect, not at all. But it has the classic EJ rumble, a bulletproof transmission, looks like a hot wheels car, and there's no car I'd rather drive when it snows. I'll never sell it. This car will be a classic someday.
I bought a brand new 2020 STI last year and I love the drive of this car. I've had a few cars in my time and the only downside is gas mileage. I can't imagine selling my STI, nice review but this car is a classic! Hoping the new STI doesn't look like the wrx👍🏾nice vid. go Subiegang 🚘
As a dad with two young kids, this is my daily driver. We also have a Subaru Ascent to do the long trips but for school drop-offs and daily commute this is the perfect all season "Sports Car". Plus the kids love seeing it pull up to school, I'm the cool Dad! Haha
Exactly! It has 4 doors and can transport a family - no problem. I guess people assume that they need a bigger car to transport a family. You will always look cool pulling up in one. They will always be a collector's item. Enjoy the car!
top 3 reasons i would buy this car 1: its so outdated 2: shifter that moves on its own 3: car doesnt talk to me haha great video guys! 21 wrx base owner here, absolutely love my brand new classic car.
I had a 2015 wrx when they were first released and really dispised the lack of tech Subaru had in it during the time. But as time has passed and seeing what cars are turning into im finding a new respect for the old stuff. If I were in a financial position to pick one up, I would most definitely do it.
With proper tires this is unstoppable in the snow. Set the diff to manual/full rear and you can hoon like a rear wheel drive. STi is the perfect winter/snow toy, and you can put the kids in the back and go play in the snow.
Needs a couple inch lift kit to really be a snow contender with such a large low front bumper. They totally crush it on every other rally terrain, just most cars suck worse in the snow
Down in Jersey right now living in our current nor'easter, enjoying this vid. To Yuri's "family man" statement, I have two kids, 6 & 9, & have no issue owning my 2017 as a dad. As there's adequate room for adults in the back as Yuri stated, my kids have more than enough room. I've never had trouble fitting their gear in the trunk, and they love riding in it. They're already begging me to go out and shovel so we can find an empty parking lot. And in the summertime they love entering (acceleration)/exiting (downshifting) highways & the Twisties. 😎 Full transparency my wife does own an SUV😁 , and I'm looking to sell this spring. Hoping to move into an M340i or M440i, but now thx guys, perhaps this STi. Keep up the great work... p.s. VA chassis > VB chassis, Aesthetically anyway. 👍
I’ve owned a 2019 STI for three years as of Feb 2022. Best and most fun to drive car I’ve ever owned. When you use the center diff auto +1 it adds more resistance to the front diff which you can immediately feel in the steering, it gets heavier, -1 adds more resistance to the rear diff which you can also feel in the steering weight because it gets slightly lighter. First mods anyone should make to their STI should be weight reductions, get lighter wheels and suspension. I added forged Titan7 wheels and FA500 coilovers and they completely transformed the way the car moves. Feels much quicker and lighter. I’m not modding exhaust or engine because I don’t want to lose the stock EJ rumble. All I have under the hood is a strut tower brace, IAG street AOS and cyl4 cooling mod. The STI is a modern day classic and I think they will start to appreciate in value in a few years. Great job with this video, glad to see some appreciation for this amazing and unique Subaru.
I mentioned the last time you reviewed this car that the fact that it’s so analog is my favorite thing about it. It’s the best things about an STI in a safer more modern chassis. I just wish it had 350 hp from factory.
I recently purchased a 2016 STI series hyper blue and I couldn’t of purchased a better car. It may not be tail happy like my other buddies rear wheel drive cars but I look good sitting there haha. And snow drifts are the BEST
I've been saying this for years. The STI is the oldest new car you can buy today, and it's exactly for that reason that I bought it. Nothing else feels like it, for better or for worse depending on if it's what you're looking for. So happy I picked up my 2020, it's definitely the end of an era. In stock form it's good, not great. But it really only needs a bit more power and you're set. After finishing my 20g turbo build, it's perfect.
Exactly why I bought mine, lol. A few years ago it was not something I’d consider, but now since all cars are refined and shit, I picked up my 21 in November. This + my MK6 Golf R make two cars I really like. I’ve only done small stuff to the STi (and mechanically only an AWE exhaust) and I love it. Slow as balls though.. but still fun.
@@lightsy2010 exactly. I wrote off the car in 2015 because I wish it had a bigger power bump. But the sports car landscape was completely different in 2015 and cars were still trending in the direction we were all familiar with. Fast forward to 2022 and almost every modern car is fast, ugly, and boring. I couldn't think of a single car under 80k that I was interested in enough to buy, so I went for the STI as a bucket list car with extra budget for a build, and do not regret it one bit. It's not some revolutionary performance bargain, but it's from a time when cars were simpler and efficiency and multiple personalities weren't the first priorities. I fully expect this generation to be sought after in 10-15 years as the last of the STIs "the way they used to make 'em."
I love my ‘11 WRX. Averaging 21.5 MPG and I rip it all the time. Take it up the mountains multiple times a year, always good in bad weather. 0 major repairs. Amazing car.
Once the new STI is out, I think it’ll change everyone’s mind once they test drive it. It happens with every gen, this was also “ugly” at first. This gen will stay a good buy, but looking forward to the new one
Agreed! It won’t have that classic rumble, and probably not the hydraulic steering, but other than those things(and looks), I expect it to be better in every way than the current gen. And I own a current gen.
@@micahstory I don't know what to expect. I think we know it'll likely keep the plastic cladding, and what the interior will mostly look like. But I don't know if they will ditch the hydraulic steering or UEL headers. The UEL headers, the wing, and the hood scoop are all part of the design language of the STI, through every generation. It will be interesting to see what choices they make, and how much HP it ends up with. My fear, is we're not going to get any significant boost in power from the factory. I just hope is the FA 2.4 is more reliable.
Great video gentlemen! I know what you mean about driving a simpler car, towards the end of last year before I sold it, I had to pull out my 2008 Evo X GSR. It felt kind of nice to have to handle the key, put it into an ignition and turn it, the feeling of hydraulic steering and the infotainment was so bad it was my excuse to not attend to my phone what so ever. It was like going in a time machine.
The Mitsubishi Evolution needs a crazy comeback comparable to Lexus IS500 performance. They also should produce an EV version of the same ride and call it Revolution.
I had a 2017 Sport tech and it had all the bells and whistles, push to start, keyless entry harman hardon sound system and it was a great daily driver. With snow tires i plowed some almost grill high snow going up hill easily. I totally disagree that this car would not work as a family car. The trunk is huge and the back seats are super spacious, its just so practical and fun. I will say the worst and best part of owning one was the EJ motor. In the city with a light foot it was getting 14L/100km, thats about as same as a first gen GS400(4L v8) and the constant worry about the engine killing itself. Its well known issue of oil starvation in corners and roasting cylinder 4 prevented me from taking it to the track. Its not as if they wouldn't die stock either, the base tune is terrible and you needed supporting mods to keep the engine healthy if you are into track days. That being the chassis is amazing on this generation. You get great visibility in the car, car handled amazingly in stock form, spacious, comfortable, the subaru rumble and it was very fun! I'd say the best all around STI to date.
I have a 2019 STI. Love it. But what sucks about that 18 year old engine, is the fuel economy. I've had pick up trucks that get better mileage. But your not buying one of these cars to save on fuel. Still, 82$ to fill and 360 km per tank is brutal.
Owned seven Imprezas here in the uk over 15 years, amongst these was an Impreza P1, WRX RA and a Hawkeye STI with 554bhp. Amazing cars, the RA was my favourite at 1100kg/300bhp with a short ratio 5 speed and quick rack steering, that was an analogue car. So much fun and made me feel like I was Colin Mcrae.
The shifter bushings upgrade (2 of them) is a super common starting mod. It feels really notchy and so mechanical and sharp, and you can actually hear transmission whine in the car once you do it. I loved it on my 2013 stage 2 COBB protuned WRX STI.

@Bry Zeer damn
@Bry Zeer so mad for what
@Bry Zeer you must be a Hitler youth.
It’s always the STIs trying to race my new M4 🤣😂😂

@@cwx8 Nah dont speak for everyone. Theres a select few out there who buy new vehicles and drive them until the wheels fall off
@@cwx8 even though I don’t agree with having an older sti if you can afford the new one with a warranty, he is right.

This version is totally my dream car 100%. Also I kinda hoping Subaru will make a new hot hatch version and compete again in WRC
Yep I wish they made a nice hot hatch. The WRX is too big for me now
Might be incorrect but i believe the reason Subaru originally dropped out/still hasn't rejoined WRC is that they don't have a small enough engine. iirc WRC requires a 1.6l
Loved the hatchback sti, wish they still made one
I really want the sti hatch, but Subaru can't just make a car with everything right. The levorg is great, but it's CVT only (and not for us in north america). The new WRX has a better interior imo, but then you have way too much plastic cladding. The BRZ looks great, but I wish it has the new subaru interior instead of a toyota-ish interior and a turbo. I think I speak for most subaru enthusiasts when I say all of these things. It's like subaru is not listening to us, the subaru fan boys.
Dream bigger...
I’m so glad I traded up to this STI from my 2019 WRX. Happy to see so many people in these comments feel the same way!

Functional too.

Bought a 21 STI limited without a wing and it’s the best decision I’ve made. Such a fun car to get in everyday
Do you regret selling it now?

I'm not sure that there could have been another [reasonably priced]
This is definitely a fun summer vehicle with high performance summer tires. I have yet to break grip or even feel like I've hit a cornering limit on public roads with reasonable speeds. The climate control works great
I completely mirror your test drive experience with the wonderful mix of physical HVAC and touch controls.
It will be! And more so now that it’s been discontinued.
I agree. The gas mileage is ATROCIOUS. But it's worth it.
Last one still standing! Absolutely love it!
Jacob and Yuri, I'm 38 with 2 kids and I daily a '19 STi
Rear seat room and trunk space are better than most sedans and compact SUVs.
Yeyeee
As a dad with two young kids, this is my daily driver. We also have a Subaru Ascent to do the long trips but for school drop-offs and daily commute this is the perfect all season "Sports Car". Plus the kids love seeing it pull up to school, I'm the cool Dad! Haha
Exactly! It has 4 doors and can transport a family - no problem. I guess people assume that they need a bigger car to transport a family. You will always look cool pulling up in one. They will always be a collector's item. Enjoy the car!
Dude I read this and thought “wow it sounds just like my situation!” I also own an STI and ascent and have a family haha.
@@C_Suarez Best of both worlds!
top 3 reasons i would buy this car
1: its so outdated
2: shifter that moves on its own
3: car doesnt talk to me
haha great video guys! 21 wrx base owner here, absolutely love my brand new classic car.
*Compared to the new WRX, the old one is actually lovable.*
I think you need o drive a snowmobile.
Buy a 2022 STI to make rooster tails in the snow.
I have had (almost) the exact trim of this car since 2018. Love every moment I spent with it.
Soon as it starts I’m like whoa!!!!! The STI looks so much better than the WRX
Haha they look identical, other than the wing and wheels, the body is exactly the same
It's literally just the wing.
@@cwx8 I’m talking in comp to the new one
@@Youcallthesebagels_ I’m talking bout in comp to the new one
This is my attainable dream car, so I’m still hopeful I can get one in the near future
Every time people say it's ugly it's because they didn't drive it. Happens every gen and with every model lol
I just hope is the FA 2.4 is more reliable.
exactly! especially if it makes that rumored 400hp! the competition is done for 😎
@@heyaisdabomb UEL might not coming to 2023 WRX STi. Because WRX STi VAB in JDM spec also have EL header not UEL like other nation.
It was either a type r or an sti for me. Got an sti, drove it in the snow, never looked back.
I bought one in 2024 and it was the best thing I have done. The car is a blast to drive.
Why would anyone but an sti in 2022?
Subaru: you cant
I had my sti for 2 years now and i still have fun every time i drive it
The Mitsubishi Evolution needs a crazy comeback comparable to Lexus IS500 performance. They also should produce an EV version of the same ride and call it Revolution.
Are you not satisfied with the Eclipse Cross?!
@@TheStraightPipes It's not an Eclipse.
@@TheStraightPipes My disappointment is immeasurable
@@TheStraightPipes Haha, that wasn’t a great ride for sure but the Evo still got heritage that calls for a revival!
I just bought a 2004 legacy 3.0 6 speed manual wagon, amazing wagon so well built and made, I think I’m obsessed with Subarus now there so good
2019 has a more comfortable suspension than the 2015. The new 2023 will be better. I just hope they don’t put that big screen in it like the wrx.
You see the screen for the base models? YEEEESH. UGLY.
They will.
Dustin. I also experienced this with my 19 STI. Full tank got me 320km and cost 90$ to fill with premium.
@@garyglasius7002 its brutal. Some days I consider trading it for a IS350
Just bought a ‘21 STI and couldn’t be happier
Amen to the analogue! That’s why I love my ‘16 JCW!
You lucky, lucky bastard!😛
"C.diff" is maybe not the best abbreviation lol
THE RUMBLE is still alive in the STI 👏👏👏. I love it!
The shifter bushings upgrade (2 of them) is a super common starting mod. It feels really notchy and so mechanical and sharp, and you can actually hear transmission whine in the car once you do it. I loved it on my 2013 stage 2 COBB protuned WRX STI.
