To be fair, I think it could be argued Jonny is underrated in comparison to how highly rated or massively famous other arguable less talented musicians are.@@damienx0x
Young Yorke had such a chemistry with his music. Not that he doesnt have it now too. But back then his voice tone, his expressions, his head banging, everything its like he connected spiritually with his songs and thus performed heavenly great. A mystical and amazing experience would it be to have listened to him back then live :( Young Yorke=greatest frontman in recent memory.
My Iron Lung was Radiohead's reaction to Creep, their massive hit of 1993 which also became something of a millstone for Yorke. The song's caustic, self-reflective lyrics used the iron lung as a metaphor for the way Creep was keeping Radiohead alive (financially), it was also very constraining, and the band perceived it as forcing them to play a certain style of music. Similarly, an iron lung does not allow the patient inside it any freedom of movement. "This is our new song Just like the last one A total waste of time My iron lung"
Say what you want about albums like Kid A or Amnesiac being high art and all, but early Radio head was the fucking bomb man. The music was heavy and full of energy and the vocals were angry and depressed at the same time.
it was very similar to grunge man, but the thing is Radiohead aren't a grunge band, it's like using a PS4 only for playing FIFA... I know, their early songs were fucking bombs and I like them because I like punk rock music and everything near this category (ex. grunge), and this is the reason why I love My Iron Lung, but early Radiohead were rough! With "The Bends" (what an album that was) they start to become what they are now, the best band in the modern era... They are genius, they can't do Punk Rock et cetera for ever IMO (sorry for my english)
You're English is okay, I can understand you. I just got annoyed when the vocals started to sound muddled. I wish they would go back to singing clearly.
I agree about the bends. This album is solid all the way through. I find pablo honey to be a little on the desperate-to-get-noticed side, and OK computer's production sounds too perfect. The bends is obviously in between those two and doesn't have those negatives, imo.
"My Iron Lung" Faith, you're driving me away You do it everyday You don't mean it But it hurts like hell My brain says I'm receiving pain A lack of oxygen From my life support My iron lung We're too young to fall asleep To cynical to speak We are losing it Can't you tell? The FACE Thom makes round about :31. Hilarious! I agree with the consensus that this is an awesome performance. But Thom is a perfectionist, so his comment at the end didn't really surprise me. I LOVE discovering gems like this. Thanks so much for sharing! And pooh on those 4 people who gave this a thumbs-down. (Really?)
I won a bet when 'ok computer' came out, as my best friend at the time bet me that 'just'and 'my iron lung' would be as heavy as Radiohead would ever get! I called my friend and played him the guitar meltdown from 'Paranoid Android' as I had received an early pre-order copy, although it was about three years later, I had cued up the bit on my Discman and when he arrived I simply put the earphones on him, watched the timer for the end of that section and then snatched the earphones back, held up the CD and mouthed "Radiohead" at him. Bless his soul he got in his car and came back about a half hour later with the ounce of weed we had bet!
usually hate when people try to “correct” comments from years ago, but just here to remind all you guys that you have awesome music taste plus we’re almost at 30 years which is fucking crazy
@diego ballatti De hecho dos segundos antes se los pone pero no están a su medida, es decir que le quedan arriba de las orejas. Por eso los mira como "estúpidos audífonos" los ajusta y se los pone a su medida jaja
Radiohead is a band that's like a great Film that you dont really comprehend its brilliance until youve watched it a few times.. because its slow, and so unique that you miss the important dialogue, you miss the plot.. And now that I've gradually fell in love with Radiohead, I've realized that almost every song has that same affect on me. I've heard My Iron Lung' ten-fifteen times.. but it wasnt until I looked up the lyrics that my mind was blown away with the emotion of the song.. It was the 1st time I captured the full meaning of the song.. Because on the surface, its easy to listen and say "This is a really cool Rock song" and most of their songs come to me the same way, slowly (or in pieces) the 1st time I listened to Kid A I thought "This is some cool sounding music-cinematic, dark, and creepy" but I didnt feel the emotion of it til later on.. So if anyone feels this way right now-You need to look deeper into the songs.. Because once I did, I felt like a damn fool for going 4-5 Years thinking Radiohead was overrated. Even with as Popular as they are, I'd still say their Underrated
To spend eternity never knowing that once, for a fleeting moment, you lived and loved, laughed and cried, sang and played a Musical instrument. All we ever learned and knew...gone for all eternity. I am an atheist, too. I think saying it "sucks" is is a HUGE understatement. I don't blame anyone for wanting to believe in an afterlife. For NOT existing for all eternity is an unbearable thought I have a tendency to dwell in. Believe me when I say, that when I realised there was no God, my heart sank with the alternative. I don't WANT to stop existing. But when I think of the impossibility of eternal existence, and how microscopic and infiticimal we all are, my brain starts to melt.
Pardon me if someone already commented this way -- I think this song is a reaction to the popularity they achieved via Creep going massive. The metaphor of an iron lung (google it if you are not familiar with the device) is really apt.

I'm not much of a gearhead, but on the main song riff it sounds to me like Johnny's line's are octave'd up one and two octaves above the fundamental. The bends especially sound like the kind of tracking one gets up there in that high octave sometimes. Just a guess.
I just got a similar sound on GarageBand mixing in the AUPitch effect on my Strat track up 1200 cents and another duplicate track raised 2400 cents. The weird bends are on that second track. Try it!
The headphones their wearing probly cost ten dollars. And probably of similar quality to beats by dre. So ridiculous how expensive they r. Great marketing campaign though
Es una excelente canción, una de mis favoritas de Radio. Me intriga saber que dice Thom al final, a mi parecer esta como inconforme pero no se exactamente lo que dice no hablo ingles, alguien podría ayudarme con eso porfa
Johnny is such an icon to alternative music. I love his use of keyboards, guitars, and syns. Such an underrated musician.
justin profit
I think the same.
He's one of the highest rated musicians in the world. Learn the meaning of "underrated".
"Such an underrated musician"🤣 Nope, he is very high rated)

Good to get a reminder from time to time that Radiohead can also ROCK HARD.
0:30 Yorke:" What is wrong with you headphones?"
Ed's guitar at the beginning 👌
Ebow. Fantastic use.
york struggling to put on his headphones is the most hilarious sight iv ever seen this month

True I love watching the early Radiohead concerts cause of that
I aged right along with Yorke. To me, he hasn't
diminished one bit.

@@Ripcurlgrlthat was good to read thanks❤
Ed puts on a precision clinic right here HOLY SHIT
Somehow I feel like Thom's snark at the end compliments the song rather well.
0:26 stupid HEADphones!!!!

That intro was sick

+Joshua yeah, me too, that's the part I like less... nevertheless it's a beautiful song, that riff is something special!
Y2Jmarco1 disagree they aren’t the same as they use to be quality wise. They are less interesting

"My Iron Lung"
Faith, you're driving me away
You do it everyday
You don't mean it
But it hurts like hell
My brain says I'm receiving pain
A lack of oxygen
From my life support
My iron lung
We're too young to fall asleep
To cynical to speak
We are losing it
Can't you tell?
We scratch our eternal itch
A twentieth century bitch
And we are grateful for
Our iron lung
The headshrinkers, they want everything
My uncle Bill, my Belisha beacon
The headshrinkers, they want everything
My uncle Bill, my Belisha beacon
Suck, suck your teenage thumb
Toilet trained and dumb
When the power runs out
We'll just hum
This, this is our new song
Just like the last one
A total waste of time
My iron lung
The headshrinkers, they want everything
My uncle Bill, my Belisha beacon
The headshrinkers, they want everything
My uncle Bill, my Belisha beacon
And if you're frightened
You can be frightened
You can be, it's OK
And if you're frightened
You can be frightened
You can be, it's OK
That's some damn good crap Thom.
I'm so glad this exists again
such a good fucking song. i'll never get tired of this.
Me neither...
One of my favourite songs ever, and definitely one of the best from Radiohead in my opinion. It is so freakin heavy.
The whole album 1995-96 when i passed my driving test this album was on constantly in the car....

How long have Ebows been around?
Since the 70s at least.
Ha ha... de twee meter sessies - those were the days. Was dat niet met Jan Douwe Kroeske ofzo...? Van de VARA? Heel erg underground in ieder geval.

Who plays the lead guitar on the studio version of this song (or do two of them play lead at different times)? Thanx.
There is no studio version- they used the version from the Astoria on the bends (although did re-record the vocals). Three guitar rock at its best
