@@nicoleann0703 Me too! I caught them in 1995 when Creep was still a radio mainstay. That concert was absolutely nuts. I thought I was going to get crushed to death against the front rail and had to get pulled out of the crowd by security. What a show!
Can’t believe how great Thom’s voice was during that era! As great as Radiohead has become, I think the era of Pablo Honey and The Bends is really underrated as just great alternative rock. There is not one bad song in this whole show!
The Bends IS Radiohead. Us fans from the beginning, who had no idea what their "costumes" looked like like the majority of people posting here, passed around tapes of the Bends like it was forbidden. No local stores even know who they were. I'm still not sure where my friend got the Bends from. I assume he drove an hour to the big city by himself at 16 in his dead mom's minivan and bought it for $7. We had no idea what "cool" haircut Thom had. We didn't know who Thom Yorke was; never heard his name. Didn't hear his name afterwards; didn't care. We didn't care about haircuts and t-shirts and whatever else. They weren't on the radio and no one had the internet. We just knew the music. Most everyone else was listening to Tupac or the Spice Girls with the bass so loud their cars were raddling (while blacks laughed at them). I guess I'm "old". But I sometimes think about my mom's experience seeing the Beatles in concert just before they were etched in history. Back then, in my time, no one even thought about what someone looked like or the type of "cool" lights they had at their concert. For all we knew, Thom "what's his name" what a 7 foot black body builder. We only had their music and that was all that mattered. Now, even in these comments, everyone is talking about bangs and tennis shoes and how tall the singer is....
@@kilgoretrout5313 just because someone talks about thom's bangs doesn't mean they don't appreciate the music lol. You're just pretentious and want something to complain about so you can feel special. Also, ask Radiohead, I doubt they'd say The Bends is Radiohead. While its a great album they have so much more to offer.
What I find cool about this is 2 things 1: this is where the music video for my iron lung was filmed 2: this is (so far) the only evidence of pop is dead on the official RUclips channel
"Blowout" is just a masterpiece. That song, to me, forshadowed everything that was to come for their entire discography. That song could have been on the Bends, Ok Computer, HTTT, In Rainbows, AMSP, and still would have been just as good. Side note, I hope "Skirting on the surface" shows up in the next album!
@@scottishcheese13 yup, been listening to the band. Haven’t heard their recent rendition of the track, (as of 2022 upon the smile’s debut album release, it’s superb) but I’m waiting to hear it when they post the live version and the album.
Something about the 94 performances just hits different. It's like the band's growing abilities as songwriters as well as their desire to distance themselves from Creep were coming out at full force. They were imminently getting dismissed as future one hit wonders and a novelty act but their pre bends album release performances gave a small peak into the complete metamorphosis the band would undergo during the next couple years
I was lucky enough to see it live on my first radiohead show (blackpool 2006)... always loved it, and resonated with me in high school. that stuff sticks around forever.
Right from the first moment, Jonny’s guitar is loud, meaty, squeaky, delicate, in tune, in time, bombastic, explosive...no thesaurus can do justice to his playing and his sound, even before they’d released their second record.
This is one of my favorite radiohead shows, the energy, the setlist, the performance (especially My Iron Lung, Maquiladora, Stop Whispering and the transition to Anyone Can Play Guitar, and Blow Out), the stage presence, the lighting and everything was just perfect
I agree that this version sounds great with all the Jonny guitar noises but i would argue, for the justice of Thom's songwriting, they nailed it perfectly in the record. Nothing too overbearing to stray away from the feeling of the song, plus the reduced tempo and softer guitar tones worked wonders. God, I can't stress how good of a record Fake Plastic Trees are. Crying to it doesn't even feel bad, it's so comforting that you'd wanna cry more lol.
This gig is rooted deeply in my soul. Bought the DVD with money scraps when I was a student. Jonny truly enjoys Maquiladora and Ripcord, the MVPs of this show. Colin is just boss.
@@ippotsk yeah lol i found it on dailymotion with a basic search, weird zooms, thom yorkes awesome pimp outfit, and a random fuckin iguana throughout the video, its quite an experience
Such a stark difference in the songs on The Bends and pre Bends. Going from My Iron Lung to Prove Yourself was like two different bands. Two different personalities. So amazed at what they grew into
That look on his face was because they had been trying to get the sound right on My Iron Lung for ages during the recording of The Bends but just couldn't get it how they wanted. The sound they got on it at this gig was exactly what Thom wanted thus the look on his face after they start playing. This recording of My Iron Lung is the recording you hear on The Bends album.
They're all operating at top level, but Ed in particular is a total beast here. The energy is incredible, but also those guitar sounds are amazing. During the outro to Blow Out, it sounds like he's bringing a jet engine to life underneath all the other sounds. Easily makes this the best version of the song I've ever heard.
So weird to watch this now - the crowd barely reacts to any song other than Creep. Now half the tracks in this set are legendary, and more highly regarded in some cases
I've always thought Radiohead's sheer jump in songwriting & musicianship from 1993 to 1994 was almost unbelievable. We're talking some Robert Johnson-at-the-crossroads shit here.
Exactly, but I think the songwriting in Pablo Honey is still pretty good. It was more the arrangements and their overall sound that was weak and obsolete. Imagine if they gave sth like Blow Out (which is already great) the Nude treatment years later. But yes, when the bar is The Bends, even decent songwriting seems to’ve been excelled by miles.
This was such a great era, saw them in 92 and 94 and whatever anyone tells you, 'Pablo Honey' was a great album, hugely popular at the time and we all knew that this was the band to take notice of. Thanks for sharing.
@@georgejpg but please don't compare those two album. It's just got a different type and vibe. Of course Pablo Honey is a great album too, You're just being selfish by comparing those album 😏
This live performance is perfect in every single way. Vocals, guitars, timing, sound, everything. Amazing to see how they were at being a pop band. It's also amazing to see how much depth there already was in this band and how they could evolve to become the most important prog band of the last 25 years.
I'm always so amazed how they are able to easily replicate really difficult effects live, props to Johnny man. Dude knows his way around strings and 100 knobs.
If you're talking about the songs from The Bends, the album wasn't out yet. Some of the songs from this show actually ended up on the album with few things added or replaced.
I can't believe just how incredible this whole performance is. Been following Radiohead since 1995. My fave band. I'm loving experiencing the bends tracks for the first time with this lucky as fuck audience.
This is so bonkers. Their energy - whoa. After weeks of watching some great post-OK Computer shows, it's such a trip to see them (even Ed!) jumping up and down, all angsty and posturing. But Colin's basically the same, lol - except for the pony tail.
Well, I seem to be in the minority here, since I don't see anyone making the same argument, BUT I'll go out on a limb and say this was definitely Radiohead's live peak. Studio-wise I'll let others make the argument that they peaked with Ok Computer or even later albums, but live, well there I think they just lost that "edge" and some of that energy that they had in this performance and others in 1994. Can't quite put my finger on it, but this concerts feels like a proper "gig", full of unfiltered passion and energy, where as later shows (while still very good) feel a little more like going through the motions. Just my opinion of course!
@@andrewoakeshott7759imagine doing and playing like this show after show for years straight. I can imagine they got pretty bored with it, though this looks like the dream, but when you add it up with pressure, fatigue, a double edged fame, and a crowd that only goes wild on Creep despite all the other great songs they played with passion, this energy can dwindle down pretty quickly.
street spirit is definitely one of radioheads most heart-breaking songs. it is so emotional, beautiful and yet so dark and sad. i love it so much, would love to see it live one day! thom is literally immersing his soul in this song (as well as the other members of the band) everytime he performs it. i can't describe or even understand the way i feel while listening to it, it is just out of this world
It's so cool to see how the seeds of what they would release in later years are all here, how the dissonant guitar parts later made their way into songs like Gloaming, Idioteque and Bodysnatchers. I love how Ed plays the ambient parts, specially in blow out, I can see how this got evolved into tracks like Treefingers and even House of Cards. This concert was like an anthropological study of how musicians evolve over time if they let themselves grow and not get stuck with a particular sound just because it became popular. Thank you for sharing this!
it’s really a testament to Radiohead’s professionalism that My Iron Lung’s album version was literally recorded at this concert, with Thom only working on the vocals in the studio. Not one fucking note missed, not one beat out of time. They may not be my favourite band, but there is no denying Radiohead’s sheer dedication to reaching perfection and that shall always be commended. What a great fucking band these guys created.

They're the most known unknown band. You don't have to feel and act like a hipster when you mention Radiohead because they are popular enough, but then again, no one I know listens to them, so you can't be annoyed by plebs about it, and you're gonna feel good once you meet someone that actually listens to them. Also, they're critically acclaimed to death so I know when someone tells me that they suck, they're either in the minority (which is ok) or just trolls. Also I'm glad Thom Yorke is not a big asshole in the media and quiet person I can relate to.
Radiohead could have after ok computer just churned out more "creeps" but they jumped in the opposite direction altogether and it works, a moon shaped pool i did struggle with
Omg yes. Well said. My peers dont know em and I feel sad and pity them actually. Im so lucky my best pal introduced me to em , now I cant think of any other band who is humble and so low profile yet so majestic like Radiohead
This performance of blow out is genuinely my favorite version of the song and i hate that its not on Spotify because its genuinely one of the most beautiful tracks ive ever heard
This entire concert is on fire. You, My Iron Lung, Blow Out, Maquiladora...honestly I think this is the hight of their powers in their guitar rock band era.
They were on fire that night! Did you know the album version of My Iron Lung was actually recorded during this performance with only Yorke's vocals replaced later in a studio. Dope!
I became a radiohead fan about 6 months after this gig , introduced by a mate at my uni halls . What’s really upsetting is that I lived 10 mins walk away from the Astoria during this time and gutted to have missed this live . Have been lucky to see radiohead live about 15 times since and still have this on VHS !
Just imagine hearing these songs for the first time ever. Most of these songs hadn't been published or performed anywhere! "Another new song... sorry..." then launches into Blackstar with the no-intro/immediate verse *and my brain barfs all over itself OMG and then The Bends after creep. the crowd must've been like wtf is going on??? Sorry I'm just going to keep editing/adding to this comment as I continue watching, because this concert is blowing my mind away. You can see people clearly losing their shit by the time My Iron Lung comes around. There's jumping around happening in the crowd shots that could accurately be described as 'ecstatic frenzy' i.e. everyone is going mental, and rightfully so. Maquiladora is towering. Just a hot slab of 3-guitar perfection. The transformation of Pablo Honey-era sounds to this is jaw dropping. Quality of live performance is unreal. I forget how early-Ed was such a cheeky rock god. He seems hell bent on literally melting peoples' faces off. Jesus! Thom seems genuinely insecure about the new material. It's really interesting to see that. He finished Fake Plastic Trees, one of the greatest songs ever written, and says, "I can see you're all falling asleep."
How many times have I watched this VHS with my family My mother Akiko was around 60’s and never have listened to Radiohead and these English songs before I remember I saw her cry in tears quietly watching Street Spirit After a few years of her funeral by interstitial pneumonia from collagen disease I brought her a CD with the song in her coffin After 15 years since then I’m still a huge fan of Radiohead and I’m so proud of it You guys are special
I've just recently discovered Radiohead... and omygod I think my ears are having an orgasm. I haven't listened to most of their songs so I'm so fucking excited.
Really, the most depressing part of this whole concert is that I'm 30 years older now. Also, nobody lost their sh*t when Fake Plastic Trees started because they didn't know that master piece yet. That's crazy!
I know a million people have written things like this, but-
Thom then: K-Pop star
Thom now: Wise old homeless wizard

22:30 the look on Thom's face when the intro to My Iron Lung plays is so satisfying. He's like "Yeah, I f**kin wrote this absolute tune."

Can’t believe how great Thom’s voice was during that era! As great as Radiohead has become, I think the era of Pablo Honey and The Bends is really underrated as just great alternative rock. There is not one bad song in this whole show!
I think that radioheads first three records are awesome.
Now, even in these comments, everyone is talking about bangs and tennis shoes and how tall the singer is....
based
@@kilgoretrout5313 just because someone talks about thom's bangs doesn't mean they don't appreciate the music lol. You're just pretentious and want something to complain about so you can feel special.
Also, ask Radiohead, I doubt they'd say The Bends is Radiohead. While its a great album they have so much more to offer.
Truth ✌🏾
What I find cool about this is 2 things
1: this is where the music video for my iron lung was filmed
2: this is (so far) the only evidence of pop is dead on the official RUclips channel
Its also where the audio (except vocals) For My Iron Long was recorded.
"Blowout" is just a masterpiece. That song, to me, forshadowed everything that was to come for their entire discography. That song could have been on the Bends, Ok Computer, HTTT, In Rainbows, AMSP, and still would have been just as good. Side note, I hope "Skirting on the surface" shows up in the next album!
total bossa nova inspired. i call it bossa noise.
That guitar solo on blowout is bananas.

Yep, he mentioned once in an interview that he hates those kinds of solos
That transition from Stop Whispering and Anyone Can Play Guitar was fantastic
Something about the 94 performances just hits different. It's like the band's growing abilities as songwriters as well as their desire to distance themselves from Creep were coming out at full force. They were imminently getting dismissed as future one hit wonders and a novelty act but their pre bends album release performances gave a small peak into the complete metamorphosis the band would undergo during the next couple years
this one has one of my absolute favourite performances of Black Star. that song has always struck a chord with me.
@Bryton I wholeheartedly agree. It truly is.

Can we get a hearty thumbs up for Ed’s jump at the start of The Bends
👍!
Right from the first moment, Jonny’s guitar is loud, meaty, squeaky, delicate, in tune, in time, bombastic, explosive...no thesaurus can do justice to his playing and his sound, even before they’d released their second record.
I swear for life, Jonny and Ed's guitar here has some of the best guitar sounding ever, it's pure wildness raw energy, I just want to play like this.
Nirvana had just finished a few weeks earlier and it was time for someone take the torch for great music
I always felt this was their peak as a live guitar band.
The concert is incredible. The performance of My Iron Lung was used as the official version on The Bends.

Johnny alone is worth listening to the entire time
this performance of Blow Out is actually insane
Maquiladora sounds incredible. Crazy it's a b-side.

This is one of my favorite radiohead shows, the energy, the setlist, the performance (especially My Iron Lung, Maquiladora, Stop Whispering and the transition to Anyone Can Play Guitar, and Blow Out), the stage presence, the lighting and everything was just perfect
+1 for that transition into Anyone can Play Guitar

@@trickadatry768I agree! Thoms voice is just amazing and still is
I agree that this version sounds great with all the Jonny guitar noises but i would argue, for the justice of Thom's songwriting, they nailed it perfectly in the record.

Any of those Bends songs now would make people go crazy - here they're met with respectful silence. What a different time!
One of the tightest most on point live performances the world will ever hear and see.
Such a stark difference in the songs on The Bends and pre Bends. Going from My Iron Lung to Prove Yourself was like two different bands. Two different personalities. So amazed at what they grew into
Thom apologising for another new one, My Iron Lung. The look on his face...... Wait till you hear this.
Anthony Cooper Except the vocals
They're all operating at top level, but Ed in particular is a total beast here. The energy is incredible, but also those guitar sounds are amazing. During the outro to Blow Out, it sounds like he's bringing a jet engine to life underneath all the other sounds. Easily makes this the best version of the song I've ever heard.
So weird to watch this now - the crowd barely reacts to any song other than Creep. Now half the tracks in this set are legendary, and more highly regarded in some cases
most the songs from the bends had yet to be released so thats probably why
pablo honey is the least listened to radiohead album (besides creep) to be fair, even though it actually rocks for a grunge album.

It's also amazing to see how much depth there already was in this band and how they could evolve to become the most important prog band of the last 25 years.

Just my opinion of course!

street spirit is definitely one of radioheads most heart-breaking songs. it is so emotional, beautiful and yet so dark and sad. i love it so much, would love to see it live one day! thom is literally immersing his soul in this song (as well as the other members of the band) everytime he performs it. i can't describe or even understand the way i feel while listening to it, it is just out of this world
Radiohead is the only band I’ve liked through all their phases. I like Pablo as much as Moon.
Yes! Everything about this is on point! The trajectory of what Was to come sonically in their future through this concert just speaks for itself!
it’s really a testament to Radiohead’s professionalism that My Iron Lung’s album version was literally recorded at this concert, with Thom only working on the vocals in the studio.
Not one fucking note missed, not one beat out of time. They may not be my favourite band, but there is no denying Radiohead’s sheer dedication to reaching perfection and that shall always be commended. What a great fucking band these guys created.
