I wish this was available elsewhere. I've liked it better since the first time I heard it. It's the original written in 4/4 time as opposed to the 6/8 version that was released.
Thank you for posting this. This song along with Through The Long Night and Summer Highland Falls, is my favourite of his and it is so interesting to hear how the arrangement evolved. Brilliant!
The difference in his voice was due to incorrect production and mixing. He has categorically stated that - he hated the production of this album for that very reason
yea - actually its probably something that could be put right now. must have been totally annoying and probably be the end to many other not so strong musicians !
His voice was distinctively different during cold spring harbour. More vibrato and less harshness. He was just singing in his own voice rather than the other styles he developed from listening to Steve Winwood, ray Charles, Paul McCartney and so on
(qu)iet desperation as I wander through the world in which I live I search everywhere for some new inspiration and it's more than cold reality can give If I need a cause for celebration or a comfort I can use to ease my mind I rely on my imagination and I dream of an imaginary time Oh I know that everybody has a dream, everybody has a dream ,everybody has a dream And this is my dream, my own just to be at home and to be all alone...with you If I believe in all the words I'm saying and if a word from you can bring a better day Then all I have are these games that I've been playing to keep my hope from crumbling away So let me lie and let me go on sleeping and I will lose myself in palaces of sand And all the fantasies that I will been keeping will make the empty hours easier to stand Oh I'm sure that everybody has a dream ,everybody has a dream ,everybody has a dream And this is my dream, my own just to be at home And to be all alone...with you So let me lie and let me go on sleeping and I will lose myself in palaces of sand And all the fantasies that I will been keeping will make the empty hours easier to stand Oh I'm sure that everybody has a dream ,everybody has a dream ,oh everybody has a dream yeah everybody has a dream ,oh oh everybody has a dream,oh oh everybody has a dream oh ahh
I know I am not alone in thinking the Stranger version is the worst of the 3 different ones made. I far prefer the second version of the song over it getting slowed down even more and given a gospel feel.
While the Manhattans singing ability is far superior, that version is based off the Stranger version of the song, which goes with a gospel feel. I find this version to be the best one because it is actually a very sad song and this one captures that. Billy sings it with the inherent sadness the lyrics of the verses deserve.
@@louiscolliwell said, this song has abeen my favorite lyrics by Billy Joel, and that's not a small feat at all .. To hear the piano match the incredibly dense and symbolic lyricism makes this version way better then the version on the stranger After all , as amazing of a Lyricist as Billy Joel is, his piano is what his true fans appreciate.
I love Cold Spring Harbor!

Wow, this is fantastic. I knew this was an older song, but I didn't know this recording existed. Just sensational.
Great lyrics from such a young man!

Beautiful song.
Beautiful!
Better than the released version.
I agree. And clearly this is how he originally intended the song to sound.
@@louiscolli hopefully the live version of this is on the new vinyl album
I prefer the key signature of the released version.
holy shit this is beautiful

Doesnt matter, I love the album.

I never knew where he got this original vocal style although it definitely has some kind of lineage. Vibrato laden and overly Anglocized...
Probably recorded at the wrong speed as the rest of the album.
It seams, that has the same speed/ pitch problem as the original realeses of the 1th album from those sessions. But stil is a great version.
I think that his voice was just higher then.
this song became a masterpiece with the help of Phil Ramone.

@@louiscolli the repetitive quarter notes in the piano don't work for me. Glad he revised it
How did this song not make Cold Spring Harbor? Artie Ripp?? Of course, it would have just been "Alvin-ized"
After Billy's suicide attempt it was replaced by Got To Begin Again to end the album.
Manhattans version is way better.
Manhattans?
