  • It's been on the 'places to go spearfishing' list for over a decade and we finally got down to New Zealand. We arrived a week before my sisters wedding and there was a short break in the weather. Jackson Shields and his partner Sophie Hamilton (Both New Zealand champion spearfishers) took me out locally for a quick dive in search of snapper, Pagrus auratus. I've shot plenty of these in Australia but this ended up being my personal best fish. Jackson runs Wettie Spearfishing in Auckland and if you are ever in the area make sure you visit, it's an awesome store with fantastic staff and local knowledge.

    About 7am on the North Shore in New England, USA. About to go diving to test a new 14mm small ID band I rigged for my Rob Allen 90 Roller last night. I now have 3 different bands of different lengths and thickness to power 3 different 6.5, 7, & 7.5mm 1.3m shafts, 2 HeadHunter Pole Spears (NOMAD & Predator), Eddyline Caribean Angler Edition 14' sit on top Kayak, Taho Zephyr SUP (displacement bow/recessed deck, 15lbs- very nice highly recommend!), & a Banks Board II (each rigged to stow all my spearfishing gear), couple low volume dive masks/snorkels, sick pairs of gloves/mitts/socks, bunch of baggage (mesh/dry/other), tons of rope/rigging, and several years worth of memories logged for every dive I've ever been on contained withing now 2 completely filled page to page dive journals complete with little drawings I try to make after each dive. I have never been happier on my life than I am right now and I would not have been able to watch, learn, and believe it was possible without diver/content creators like DMann, Spearfishing life, Aquatic Apes, Ryan Myers, WettieTV, Adreeno, Rob Allen, Rene Potvin, and countless others who made envisioning myself as a Spearo possible and who gave me the knowledge/insight to make it a reality. Hi Dan this video is just as amazing as the rest in this series and i just want to say i really enjoy your videos. Awesome fish but the red moki or banded morwong as you Aussies call them should not be shot and it actually has nothing to do with the eating quality. Red moki are very long lived, slow growing, resident species that mate for life. This means that shooting only one or two can damage the population very easly as they do not reproduce with any fish but there mate and it takes a very long time for the population to bounce back as it takes many years for a moki to grow to sexual maturity. The other reason is they are sacred in maori culture and hold great mana with us New Zealanders. But aside from that awesome video mate and some really quality snapper. Cant wait to see your next adventure.

    • @Nofishnoclue
      @Nofishnoclue Год назад

      Very dependant on where you collect the snapper from in NZ aswell, depth and bottom material differences will result in massive morphology differences, ones caught over sand bottoms usually are are often bright pink with very proportional bodies and heads, while ones caught from over 30m often are a deeper red sometimes with vibrant blue spots and fins. The ones in these videos are what we would call kelpies, often darker colours with big gnarly mouths and fat powerful bodies, they can be very very dark to the point they almost look black depending on where you get them

    Where I'm from, a great deal of respect is given to a fish that's been shot at, injured, faught for its life, escaped and survived. Very poor sportsmanship. His scars should have earned him the right to live and the choice to spear him says volumes.
    Daniel, you must try this practice in future, you'll thank me later. Yes it is spiritual.

      @@DanielMann Oh yes they taste delicious!
      But they are very long lived and don't reproduce often, so most spearo's in my part of NZ won't target them due to that. Pretty easy to just wipe a population out, as they tend to hang around the same holes too.
      (No issue with you shooting it though, like I said I feel like everyone here has shot at least one, and they do taste good :D)
