Spearfishing with my brother in Australia Venus Tuskfish Catch Clean Cook

  • My brother was the one who got me into spearfishing originally, but he doesn't get out as much these days. This was my last opportunity at a dive in Australia with him so we headed offshore into Northern NSW in search of wahoo and mackerel. I dropped him on a small corner of reef that had a good show on the sounder. He surfaces with something special with this gorgeous Venus tuskfish. With a fish each we head home and cook them for an entrée to a family dinner.

It's pretty similar to the videos from England other than the visibility is about twice as bad on average. I'm not a good enough freediver to hunt in the Aegean. I don't care what anyone else says, this is the best spearfishing channel on the web. Quick question Daniel, what's your job? Just wondering because these videos are really well put together and I wondered if you have a background in film or TV. Also love the way how you weave tips into your videos and are really sustainable. Instead of going out and shooting 20 fish and only taking the fillets, you take one fish and put it to good use. Dan, I stumbled onto your channel about a week or so ago and since then I’ve watched all your videos. I really like your content. After about 38 years, I’m getting back into spearfishing, basically starting from scratch, with all new gear, and on a budget of course. I live in the northeast Florida, United States. We tend to get an average amount of rain which keeps the water clarity poor, maybe a meter if we’re lucky, until you get a ways off shore, and we don’t have the rocky reefs that I’ve seen in most of your videos, so the most of the water. I’ll be spearfishing in will be 15 to 30 meters in depth and in open water. We do have quite a few artificial reefs around the state, but for the most part, it’s flat sandy bottoms. I’ve been looking at JBL Reaper series, and at the prices I’m seeing I could possibly could get two guns, I was considering a 130cm for my long gun and an 80 or 90cm for the shorter gun. Any suggestions on length and brand of speargun I should consider over what currently lookin at?

    • @DanielMann

Daniel, at minute 2:12, we can see behind you what appears to be a big school of some kind of dolphins at the surface, did you spot them? Sometimes, where i'm from, when they appear, the fish tends to disappear :)

Hey Paulo I didn’t notice them at the time but saw them during the editing process. I haven’t noticed that fish disappear when they are around.

@@DanielMann I am glad you didnt get bit again. For cuts like that, if you had some super glue on the boat, you could suture the wound right there. So long as you arent allergic. I have done that with a cut that needed stiches, worked a treat. Just wear gloves when you do it on your other hand, or you will glue yourself.... to yourself....
