EZ-FLASH OMEGA Definitive Edition Power Usage (And Other Flash Carts Too!)

  • I got my hands on a pre-release version of the new EZ-FLASH OMEGA Definitive Edition flash cart. This cart will be releasing very soon and you can see a full list of the new features by checking out the official manual here: www.ezflash.cn...
    Again, do note that the cart shown in the video is running pre-release software. Further optimizations may be made in the firmware after release but this should still be a good representation of things as they will be. The hardware I have should be the final version.
    Please see the spreadsheet I compiled for product links and all the values I measured: docs.google.co...
    Test hardware has been modified to eliminate several variables by bypassing the volume wheel and setting the console to max volume always, bypassing the power switch with a soft-latching variant to rule out any contaminants in the power switch, and by using soldered on power leads to rule out any dirty battery connections. Tests are all carried out at 3 volts and estimates in the spreadsheet are assuming linear power consumption. As the battery voltage decreases, the system power regulators may be more or less (likely less) efficient and power usage may increase disproportionately for the more power hungry carts.
    The links provided are NOT affiliate links. I make no money from any of the links I provide.
    I have recently enabled monetization, however, to help offset my costs for this channel. I highly recommend using adblock if you think the ads are too intrusive. If you'd like to support me directly, I've created a ko-fi: ko-fi.com/makho
    Please do not feel obligated to contribute, what funds I make there will almost entirely be put towards junk food or cat treats or other non-youtube related bullshit I don't need.

    Every time I tell another game modder I have the EZ FLASH OMEGA definitive edition, they always go into the spill of why their Everdrive is so much better because it doesn't kill their battery. Unless they also have an EZ FLASH then it's like oh did you update yet to get this new feature they just added?... My take on it is I want the best functionality out of my device firsthand, then I worry about efficiency/how I plan on maintaining my ability to game second. You can always bring a battery pack or extra batteries but you can't force the Everdrive or any other cart to do something they don't support and as of right now the EZ FLASH OMEGA definitive edition is KING of the gameboy flashcarts hands down no comparison. Not only does it add a ton of functionality like rumble, save states, thumbnail preview/title screen preview in menu, etc etc it can also emulate other game systems like the NES, SegaGameGear, SNES, Genesis/MasterSystem, PC engine, etc etc. All things no other cart can currently do. Sure some of these features are still a work in progress but it is still far better than anything else at the moment. I'm not saying the EverDrive or any of the other flash carts aren't worth buying because they for sure have their own value. But if you're thinking about getting something beside the EZ FLASH because people saying it drains the batteries faster. Ignore them and just get the damn EZ FLASH you will not regret it. The Pro's far outweigh the battery usage.

    Nice video, the rate of power consumption is based on the chips used. The Omega uses the most, because reading and writing to a micro sd card requires a lot more power than a standard cart. Also, the omega's battery will probably always fail, because the device charges the internal battery while playing. The problem with this approach is the cartridge draws a lot of power, and the battery becomes ruined over a short period depending on usage. The battery becomes ruined, because Li-ion cells should be discharged before charging, otherwise a voltage drop appears and the battery loses capacity.

    When you talked about the 3.3v vs 5v on the flash cart that did not have the level shifters, how much risk is there to the original hardware? Additionally, with all the mods folks are doing, IPS screens, LED backlit buttons, amplifiers, and such, should modders be looking at power circuits on the GBA mainboards to prevent overcorrect damage to the systems or do the Game Boy hardware variants have enough headroom that the biggest risk is just lowered battery life?

    • @makho
      @makho  3 года назад +2

      To be honest, I really don't think there is any risk to the hardware itself. Game Boys are pretty well designed for the most part. At most, I expect that the biggest risk for damage is due to physical tolerances being different on the unlicensed carts.
      And regarding power headroom, this is a serious concern for most models of Game Boy. This is especially apparent with models that have mods and dirty power switches. With GBAs and newer, I think the power circuits are more than resilient enough as long as you have good power supply on the other end (new alkalines with no corrosion on the battery terminals, etc).

    • @SchmingyYT
      @SchmingyYT 3 года назад

      @@makho Thanks for the response. When I'm modding, I always make sure the terminals are clean and have been cleaning the power switches since I learned how from your video on how to do it. :) On GB, GBC, and original GBA, we use Eneloop rechargeable batteries instead of alkaline ones to save on how fast the systems eat batteries with the IPS kits. I am using different SP batteries based upon your videos to try in different mods I've done for the SP, most recently with your v2 board for the lipo.
      Awesome work and great channel! I really like that your videos are more a straight stream of consciousness rather than fast jump cuts through the whole process. For me, it helps to see in more detail the steps to go through to achieve the goal instead of how other channels throw a bunch of parts on the bench, and 2 minutes later are reviewing their work, then calling it a "build" video.

    Hey, I've recently noticed my EZFlash Omega got warped due to overheating. I've got more than a few mods on a couple of gba's. Besides removing mods, can you think of anything I should do to mitigate the risk of overheating my omega? Would re-capping be the best route?

    Do you have a GBAConsolizer to test with the Omega DE? Mine doesn't seem to work. The GBAConsolizer works with all other carts and the Everdrive, and the Omega ED works on all handheld console models I have, but it won't boot on the GBAConsolizer. I wonder if it's power related.

    • @makho

      should be able to just drop it in the SAVER folder and as long as the .sav has the same file name as the .gba file, then yeah it should be fine.

    I know this is old now, but why didnt you just test the consumption at the main screen/intro?

    • @makho
      @makho  2 года назад

      because it's the way I've always done it and I wanted my numbers to be as consistent as possible. Also, power usage may be different on the main screen as it will be in the overworld and normal people spend more time in the game itself than in the menu.

    I was initially disappointed when seeing there was a new "DE" edition when I only just got mine within the last few weeks. After watching this... meh. Not so much any more.
    A bunch of features I probably don't care about and 11% less power usage compared to the original EZ Flash Omega. Big whoop. Battery life is already not great with an IPSv2 screen. One of the main reasons I did an IPSv2 mod to one of my beat up SP 001 units. Rechargeable battery. I give two flips less if it only lasts 3-4 ish hours. When I'm done playing, I charge it. Usually every other play session. I don't get a ton of time to play games any more. I don't need 10 hours of battery life. 11% improvement means roughly another 20 min of play time. Again, big whoop.
    Thank you for making this video!
