      The problem is that he is trying to talk about how it works without actually knowing how it works and talked about doing things like loading saves but said he never tried it himself..... when he had the ability to do so? so the video just seems very poorly planned out or at least his scripting needs to just not mention things he doesn't know anything about. It's fine as an opinion piece, but he tried to come off like he knows what he's talking about and just seems clueless about the technology behind it. That's why his views are so low, he's trying to be more than a simple review channel but doesn't have the knowledge to actually be informative

    Krikzz and his products are amazing. Most of them come in a range of versions with the cheapest ones not costing that much more than the clones, and with much better quality and support. In my case I like to collect the original cartridges, but sometimes those things are ridiculously costly and out of reach, and that's when I use the Everdrives.

    5:10 That's mostly a problem on the GameBoy Pocket. Those poor two AAAs just can't supply enough power to a backlit screen and the EDGB at the same time. You'll get random reboots. Works fine on the other models though.

      Great questions! I didn’t even think about that. I did some digging and it looks like it works with the Super Game Boy (there are some roms that add enhanced color palettes also). There’s also a flash cart for the SNES called the FX Pak Pro that you can load up the Super Game Boy and Game Boy Roms without needing a physical SGB. Looks like it does not work with N64 transfer packs though 🤷‍♂️

      Ultimately I agree. I will always respect the original innovation. I think playing abandoned games however you can is absolutely fine (devs aren't going to get any money for buying their game on ebay, afterall). It's hard to justify the difference in price with legit Everdrives I agree.

  • @SkakinBaconMedia

    I believe the official Krikzz versions of the Everdrives don't have that power imbalance issue. My friend hasn't had an issue, and he also uses it on his Game Boy Player using Swiss and GB Interface. And nice footage Neander too!

    • @TynologyGaming

    Awesome video Ty! Question: I'm looking at a set of these for the wife/I and later kids, mainly for Gen 1-2 Pokemon, both adventure and multiplayer of link-cables. Is there any updates to the real-time clock issue since this was posted, or any other workarounds that you know of? EverDrive's unaffordable for me at the moment. Thanks!

    • @TynologyGaming
      @TynologyGaming  2 месяца назад

      So gen 1 doesn’t use RTC so you’re fine there but gen 2 (Gold/Silver/Crystal) does. I’m pretty sure the versions that are included on this are the romhacks that basically have you set the time every time you boot, to technically allow play without the RTC. It seems like the cheapest cart with an actual RTC is the EZ Flash Jr: amzn.to/3MYb5Qd

    The swapped B/A is in the settings and can be flipped back around
    Does your cart not have the button for reset? The button avoids having to crush the cartridge. Look for the button if you get another one. It saves a ton of stress and difficulty changing games. I believe the official Everdrive carts all have this button.
    Rev.C is a reference to the PCB revision
    Analogue Pocket doesn't really need these, but they're fantastic for the FPGBC. Especially when you want to try out hacks. I highly recommend trying the DX hack versions of your favorite games. My Super Mario Land II original cart is collecting dust ever since I snagged the color DX hack. It even adds Luigi as a playable character!

    • @TynologyGaming
      @TynologyGaming  7 месяцев назад +1

      It seems some versions with updated firmware have the button swapping ability. Unfortunately mine does not, and cannot be updated.
      The reset button is internal for some reason on this one also (I've seen the ones with the external button), but I have to push in on the exposed back top of the cart pretty firmly to trigger it, and the soft reset only seems to work sometimes.
      Before the Pocket was updated to allow access to the SD card I saw a lot of people grabbing these to use on it (but yeah not necessary anymore).
      I do want to grab a FPGBC though and will definitely check out the DX hacks!
      Thanks for the comment!

    I sprung for the gba everdrive’s latest version directly from Krizz around a year ago cause I wanted the realtime clock features and its been great. I use it alot with my gameboy player. I also got the x7 for the N64 from him. Both have worked perfectly. I'm very aware of these, even though I prefer the MSU-MD/MSU-1 enhanced versions of some games via the use of flash carts i.e Everdrives. I do keep around some of my physical copies, but I tend to lean towards the aforementioned Everdrives as I'm a fan of different types of ROM hacks, like QoL, MSU, etc. Especially when it comes to Neo Geo, the NeoSD, that is very helpful, as even most MVS carts can be upwards of a couple hundred dollars. I think for some that are unable to afford the premium price of an actual Everdrive cart, these clones could be helpful in those situations. Mine has a firmware from 2016 and came with a 4GB sdcard.. I have a (my) original Gameboy (Classic) that I got as a child back in I think 1992 or 1993ish (The box is still in pristine condition and never even took the manual out of it). I modded the Gameboy with a IPS screen and I made my own lithium mod. I modded it without soldering or removing anything. I can just pick out the lithium battery contraption and put in 4 AA batteries. I did buy a aftermarket batterycover because I wanted USB charging and did not want to cut in my orginal Gameboy(parts). So now I have a USB-C port on my Gameboy from 1989 with a lithium battery and IPS screen :D

    A huge problem for Krikzz is if they purposely brick someone's device, they can be sued. They probably won't be but they definitely could be. What they should do is put up a message saying it's not compatible hardware and just not update the firmware. I only say this because it would be a shame if they went under because they had to pay lawyers a ton of money to fight a lawsuit.

    • @TynologyGaming
      @TynologyGaming  Год назад +1

      There’s not really any legal grounding here though. The devices themselves are in a legal gray area, and they’re only providing firmware updates for their own products. Is it malicious? Sure, but not illegal by any means. Every listing I’ve seen of knockoff EDGB devices just say not to update firmware. Exposure is minimal and I’m sure other legal hurdles are much larger

    Funny you mention the story of the person making the cartridge; and then mention "who cares if you own the game" :) Basically you say that it is bad to buy a cloned product like this, as the original maker get damaged and has a personal human story; but what about the people that made those games? Forget about Nintendo; they just pay to have the game done and distributed; people make those games, and while nobody get money for a used cartridge; it is still moving around the legacy of that person that put their soul in making a game. So yes, there are people that care about using original cartridges, as it is as bad if not worst (copyright international laws say so) than making a clone of a hardware device and sell it as your design.
    War is bad; and we are all feeling sorry for the people in war zones; but I believe that flash cards existed for long time... So technically the Everdrive design is not exactly "new" nor "Original". I think I had my first flash cards about 15 years ago or longer; and I still have it somewhere (if the battery didn't leak).

    • @TynologyGaming
      @TynologyGaming  Год назад

      First off, thank you for the thought you put into this comment on the video. I understand your perspective on this.
      I have to disagree with your first point. Shaming people into only playing authentic cartridges that are generally only re-sold for sole profit to the reseller only hurts the legacy of the games and the people that made them. In my opinion the more people that can experience these games, the better, as the legacy can live on beyond the limited number of physical *functional* cartridges left in the wild and being traded. And the thing is, I'd rather have the limited supply of these old games being preserved, enjoyed and cared for by people that are passionate about them.
      As far as your second point, I'm not sure of the history specifically about GB/GBC carts, but the original ED was revolutionary in the space and the reason why every knockoff is a clone of it. Any cart before it either used slower media, lesser firmware, or had compatibility issues. I know that this is a gray area both ethically and legally but ultimately I wanted to share my love of experiencing Game Boy games and a way to do that without falling down the rabbit hole that we have all fallen down over the last 30 years.
      Or maybe that was my plan all along...

      @@TynologyGaming Thanks for the reply; I totally get your point on the cartridge re-sell issue, although what are the alternatives?
      We know that there are people that buy things to sell them for a profit sadly; but how would that be worst than the alternatives?
      Where do you see "shaming" I see honesty and logic process for a collectible. If there was no way to get a movie, a book or a painting in digital format; those items would be more valuable, isn't it?
      In part is the same concept with emulators and virtual console/computers... IF you abstract everything to just the content, it become cheap in the end and not a collectible anymore.
      A cartridge is a physical object: if all but one are destroyed, the collectible value of that single surviving cartridge would be insane. But for digital? Not so much... It become like music copied from a tape to another when we were kids, or recorded on the radio.
      If the objective is to collect, I don't see any shaming in expecting people buying the original media. As you, I prefer to see 100 cartridges in the right hands, compared to everyone having a copy of it just because we can digitize and distribute this media.
      While if we talk about "just play games" then that is different, and that is the excuse that many people place on the fact that they copy roms (in conjunction with "conservation"... Museums do that, not regular people usually, unless they are collectors?). And nothing wrong in wanting all the roms in a cabinet; or in a computer or what not, as long as we are intellectually honest in admitting that it is illegal as there is copyright; but nobody will knock at the door unless you start spreading this material too much or ask for money.
      We should not confuse the "socially acceptable behavior", with what is legal or right to do :) I can pass with a red light; and that is OK if I am in a hurry; but if the cops are there they stop me and I get a fine :) No matter if I was in a hurry or not.
      As long as people take responsibility for their own actions, that is totally fine! But I am not a fan of making it acceptable in the name of some reasons that can be flipped for convenience (not talking about you, by any means... This is a generic take on something that as you well know, is considered quite a rabbit hole).
      And I agree that the product made as ED is better than the previous ones, but it is not new :) The protocol to stream from the SD to the EEPROM or to copy bytecode and simulate the electronic signature of each device was done long time ago; but it was perfected in the ED products, and kudos for that work of course. My point was just that as this person took existing ideas (often open source), and made a product; that apply also to competitors. Unless the clones are reverse engineering his proprietary code, everything goes.
      You may remember the old days where companies would buy competitors products and take them apart to see how they are made. That is common practice; although copying a design 1:1 if it is copyrighted or trademarked is illegal (and some countries do not recognize copyright or trademarks sadly).
      I won't go on the legit territory of flash cards, but I think it is fair to save your precious and expensive media and use backups where possible; so that is the view I have of these products (I own the originals, I feel OK using roms of what I own, for my own convenience).
      I really enjoyed your video and it did show your passion. And please don't take my comments as chastising or patronizing anyone; I just pointed out at the fact that it felt to me as an oxymoron to defend a product based on your sound logic, and then dismiss original media as if that logic used before was not completely consistent.
