Embroidery is a beautiful way to decorate shirts, caps, and a ton of many other items easily and permanently. Being able to choose from a vast selection of thread colors helps you customize or color match anything you choose and truly make it unique.
If you haven’t checked out the Royal thread line, you’ve got to see what dazzling colors are available! Check out this demonstration on sewing a coat of arms in Royal Thread colors : • Embroidering Meghan Ma...
One of the best things about embroidery is that you can also create patches to go on items you might have never considered or have found hard to embroider the way you envisioned. Backpacks are a trendy new location for embroidered designs but aren't the friendliest to hoop.
That’s when patches are a great solution. Not only can you make them removable if you need to be able to switch them out, they can also be made permanent. With a bit of HeatSeal glue you can adhere a patch to any place you can use a heat press!
We used the Avance 1501C 15 needle embroidery and monogramming machine to create this custom patch. If you'd like to learn more visit the website here: avance-emb.com/best-embroider... watch more videos like this one: • Best Monogram Machine ...

Visors, like in this demonstration are a tad tricker to hoop but with a patch you can get really close to the brim and wont even have the bobbin or backing exposed to the person who ends up wearing it! All you need is a cap press, like the Hotronix Cap Press we use in this video.
What’s even cooler is that you can sew out several in just one go and have several patches ready for application right away! You don’t have to do each hat individually!
So to apply the patch onto our visor we first want to make sure it fits on the cap. Then we want to use a few key items:
We like the thermal tape to hold the patch in place: colmanandcompany.com/FILM-HEA...
Use a flexible finishing sheet to avoid creases in the cap colmanandcompany.com/HX-FLEXS...
Use a silicone release sheet to protect your heat press from glue: colmanandcompany.com/DFX-FPAP...
And of course a Hotronix Cap Press: colmanandcompany.com/HX-STXC....
Now we lay the folded flexible finishing sheet onto the Cap Press to soften the creases, then we secure our cap in place and then position our patch where we want it.
Then use thermal tape to hold it in place. Cover with the Silicone sheet and close the cap press for 20-25 seconds until the Heat Seal glue is melted.
Carefully remove your visor and remove the tape. There you have it! A patch placed permanently on the cap without having to hoop a cap at all!

Thank you this video was very helpful
Great video
Thanks for the video !!
You are very welcome!
does that grey backing help with the creese the presses make on structured caps on top?
Yes, but it also prevents it from scorching
Hi Steph, I have several questions, and thank you in advance for answering them.
What hat press machine are you using?
Where can I get one, and how much did it cost?
Did your machine come with platens of various sizes to press different sizes of hats?
Why did you choose that particular hat press?
Good Morning N - Here's a link to the hat press - It's $900 as I type this and yes, it comes with different sized platens. colmanandcompany.com/HX-STXC.html
We chose this one because of the platens and the auto release. Here's a lower cost one that is still functional, but if you watch the videos on each page you can see the difference. colmanandcompany.com/DC16-CAP.html
It's $300
What type of adhesive would you use for this process if you bought a retro patch on eBay that you wanted to heat press onto a blank SnapBack cap? Would you just use the Colman heat seal and cut to the size of the patch? Complete novice here but want to get into making hats for myself with retro patches.
You might try something like this - it's what's used on the patch kit: colmanandcompany.com/HeatSEAL-Roll.html
great video but was wondering if you have a video showing how to prep the patch...where do you buy the patches, do they have glue already on them or is this somethime you have to do before pressing them onto the caps?
There are tons of videos and links to all the supplies you'll need here: colmanandcompany.com/Patches.html
Did you spray an adhesive onto the back of the patch first?
What if you don’t have a fancy machine like this?? I used a special glue to glue a logo on my wool hat and have seams around the logo where I cut around it. Would heat tape help hide the seams?
No Tyler, the heat tape just holds it in place while you're pressing it.
What kind of backing adhesive is on that patch and is it durable?
The adhesive is part of the Patch Kit from Colman and Company - you couldn't tear it off if you tried!
I want to do this but with a chenille patch not embroidery on a dad hat.. is that possible? is there any vendors you can direct me to. I have been told that I can not have the chenille patch heat pressed to the cap or stitched. Ive seen a chenille patch on a "CELINE' designer hat I liked, but I want my logo!!... suggestions/ help, PLEASE!!??
Wife and I are just starting our little hobby in this, we are pressing patches onto Richardson Trucker Hats.
The creasing problem seems to be solved with your tip, thank you for that, just seems like we're pressing at 360 when we may or may not need to as it seems like we're melting the backing of the cap with a couple we did. Any tips? Patches vary by where we purchased them.
Hey James! We are happy to hear that your creasing problems have been solved. When we create patches we use Heat Seal backing. We only press at about 320 - 330 degrees for about 20 - 25 seconds. So I definitely think you can decrease your current pressing temp.
Hi Steph,
How did you achieve the merrow edge to the patch? Was that done on the embroidery machine? Merrow's usually wrap around the edge. Great video!
Yes! These patches were embroidered on our Avance Embroidery Machines. When having the patch border digitized, you can request different stitch styles for the outer edge. We then use a hot knife to cauterize the edges of the patches.
What pressure was used?
Does this work with patches that have a factory heat seal applied to the back?
If it's got heat seal applied, it should work fine. If not, you can always apply the heat seal yourself. It's sold separately at colmand and company
what heat settings would you recommend for pressing the iron on patches onto polyester hats?
hey i am about do some hats right now with polysester did you ever get the right settings for the heat?
@@infinity-signs I did. What are you pressing to the hats? If it's patches, I would suggest 320-340 degrees for 16-20 seconds. I set the pressure at 8 or 9
What temperature do you set your press for?
Same as you do for shirts - check the time and temp recommendations your box of paper
Hi, what kind of tape you advice?
to hold the patch? Any "thermal" tape
Is it possible to iron on patches with a regular heat press? Thanks!
YES IVE SEEN PEOPLE DO THAT... JUST READ THE DIRECTIONS FOR YOUR PATCH
Hello, thanks for the info. in the video, it's very helpful. Can you tell me the material of your visor and caps? Do you have any experience pressing acrylic caps with this method. I ask because acrylic is more sensitive to high heat. If so, do you use a lower temp? Thanks agin for the video.
Hi Gabriel - good question! Acrylic has a low melting point so we normally do not heat press it. You can try, just start with low temperatures and work your way up
What glue would you use for leather patches
same as any patch: colmanandcompany.com/Heat_Seal_Backing1.html
Where did you get your flexible finishing sheet from?
colmanandcompany.com/hotronix-heat-press-cover-sheet.html
Hi, where do you get the glue to put on the patches?
This is the exact adhesive we use: colmanandcompany.com/HeatSEAL-Yard.html
What adhesive do you use
We're using this heat seal Christian: colmanandcompany.com/HeatSEAL-Yard.html
what kind of glue is recommended
We use this heat seal that comes with the patch kit: colmanandcompany.com/Heat_Seal_Backing1.html
I have a question, my heat press is leaving a mark where the plate hits on the hat. Why would it do that?
Your pressure is probably too high. You can also play with the hats positioning on the lower platen. But unfortunately, some hats are really tricky and are prone to heat press marks!
How can I take one of these patches off?
Very unlikely Shea
Can you use this method without a cap press?
Maybe with unstructured caps. - it's just harder because you have to find a way to get consistent pressure and heat on that curved surface.
ColDesi Inc thank you for the response.
Free embroidered patches are here: www.uspatch.com
I thought you said 25sec? That definitely was not 25sec
Hey Dice - we will sometimes spare folks from staring at the heat press for the total time. That's why we said it would be 25 seconds but looked like about 2!
This person bored the hell out of me for 2 whole mins before she actually did some damn work. More work less talk
