I rewatched this film recently and saw this scene in a new light. Initially, I had the attitude of "well these jerks deserve it for starting a fight." But Jen really is very naive about the jianghu. She flaunts the Green Destiny sword openly. When those martial men see it, they come over to find out what connection she has with Li Mu Bai. She boasts that she defeated him. Either she's a lying thief who stole his sword, or she's a true enemy of his. So maybe they challenged her because they are friends of Li Mu Bai, or maybe they challenged her because they wanted to become more famous by defeating someone so strong, or maybe they wanted to trounce a lowly thief. But her bragging caused this misunderstanding.
Even when they attack, they are careful to explain to her they are attacking. They do ask for a match with her. At no point does she ever display any courtesy or respect towards them. Just based on her age, she should be a little respectful of a senior martial artist. Even if she is stronger. Her rudeness escalates the situation and turns potential friends into enemies.
During the fight, she spouts poetry about how great she is and continues to insult her foes. The degree of offense she causes ensures bad feeling. If her intent wasn't to kill them all, then she had to know that this poor behavior would create a rift between herself and others. Their intent in challenging her may have been good or evil, but how she responds reveals her extreme naivete. When she runs crying to Michelle Yeoh's character, Michelle tries to explain this to her, but she still fails to understand.

Chinese sword is more like foil, one-handed, light-weighted, self-defensing.
Quentin's Katanas are two-handed, offensive, heavy-weighted, for the real combat.

    Fantastic! Loved it!
As a former martial artist there were some very clever little tidbits in the sword fighting. One where she breaks all of the ringlets on the other persons sword. That is supposed to be like the Grandmaster sword with the ringlets that will catch the blade of an attacking sword, but she just sliced through the ringlets making that sword more useless. It was just a blip in the scene but a clever detail for anyone who knows the different weapons. Actually it was a pretty neat display of a variety of weapons of the time. I appreciated the authenticity of that aspect. Very well done fight scene, even though of course in reality you would be hard pressed to find someone who really had those skills, but in the mythology of course they do exist, and perhaps even at some point in time they did in reality as well. After I saw my Grandmaster astral project one time I started to believe some of the mythology just might actually be true! 😊😊👍👍😉😉
