My favourite thing about foreign language films is when obnoxious pop ups appear over the subtitles.
I cursed at the screen. 🤬
I thought I was the only one!
Same here. When I see that kind of lazy, sloppy editing, I can't RESIST clicking the bell and subscribing!
Lovely isn't it? I almost smash my phone when i see that
😂😁
To those of you who haven’t tried to fight on top of a bamboo forest, it is much harder than it looks.
Not true it's actually really easy
😂😂😂😂😂
@@julsc2106 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
it's actually super easy, barely an inconvenience
Rule of thumb: focus on the Bamboo, not the girl
No quick cuts, no bombastic soundtrack. Just beauty, grace and elegance.
To people who say this is unrealistic, yeah no shit, that's the point. Do you think the Chinese don't know that people can't fly? Do you need me to tell you that you won't get superpowers from being bitten by a radioactive spider?
Both these characters are superhumanly skilled. But where Jen can barely keep up due to her tenacity and natural athleticism, Li Mu Bai does everything with complete control and efficiency of movement. A perfect illustration not just of their skill levels, but of their personalities as well.
Americans scoff at foreign mysticism and films on folktales and magic, but then worship their own films about magic and whatnot. Especially against China
You have just crushed my dreams. How could you ?
Look at this clown. What next, you'll tell me Santa doesn't exist?
All of the supernatural powers you see in this scene are actually possible in real life, and were probably performed by very few spiritually trained people centuries ago. As long as you don't believe you can walk on water, then you never will.
Everything about this scene is beautiful....the actors, the scenery, just gorgeous, I love it.
About another movie with fighters. TAi Lung is a dragon warrior too. He was passionate about it. They shouldn't have banished him like that, Master oogway and Master Shifu were.....wrong....... i believe they should have told him that he too is a good warrior, not just Panda
I would plunge naked into the water from that boulder.
The Actress in this film Zhang Ziyi is absolutely stunning. I've dated 3 Chinese girls mostly because of her in this film 😂
The score.
It's really fake.
_"If you can take back the sword in three moves... I'll go with you."_
*Takes it back, in two moves.*
and it pissed me off so bad that she didn't keep her word
also, I think it's literally 1 move.
@@comfortable.and.furious well promise from a woman what do u expect hahah
@@comfortable.and.furious It's a feint and then a grab. It's hard to spot, as the camera moves so quick.

I love how the Green Destiny is almost like an evil character, poisoning the characters it comes into contact with. I think it's an allegory for power, and power tends to corrupt, just like the sword corrupts Jen.
…what are you talking about??
It’s been Li Mu Bai’s sword for decades and he’s like the most uncorrupt dude in human existence.
@@ReborncanineTrue. But she stole the sword. So you could look at it as the sword has in a sense cursed her.
@@Reborncanine Maybe this is a testament to Li Mu Bai's prowess. Only him could wield the sword.
At the beginning of the movie, he also says he wants to give the sword because his swordsman past just brought him torment and he wants to get rid of it to retire.
This is the most beautiful mystical fairy tale martial arts movie ever.
The scene is masterful. The music is beautiful. The story here is captivating.
Do you always cover the dialogue with your logo? There are plenty of non-dialogue moments where you could do that.
Incredible cinematography..... what an experience this movie is
I've always loved a few things about this scene, despite it not being on the same level as the other fight scenes. It's an allegory. The hero has a chance to redeem herself, but her hubris makes her choose unwisely. She still thinks the sword is what makes her powerful. She chases the sword and is overcome in the process, but she's rescued by someone who just wants to exploit her yet again. I love the creepy squawk you hear in the background every time Jade Fox absconds, the other instance being when she fled from Li in the fight with Tsai, streamer thingy in tow.
One of the best movie ever made. This movie should be put into the world’s finest art.
I love how Jade Fox was able to shadow them the whole time without being noticed, waiting to swipe Jen at the right moment. Many of her skills were sub par compared to Li Mu Bai. But with stealth...
There's being smug and then there's Li Mu Bai standing on the end of a bamboo tree while you try and fail miserably to 'knock' him off.
To add insult to injury, he ‘knocks’ *you* off without trying.
@trutyger09 True but that's a *but wait! There's more* moment just when you think it can't get any worse lol.

has anyone on earth ever been more cute when they're mad lol
... Chow Yun Fat?
Yeah, I loved her a lot when I was a kid
This scene really blew me away. Its so unlike any 'fight scene' in how poetic it flows. Especially at 2:01 its a masterpiece painting come to life. Combined with the music, it really speaks to the heart.
One of the most beautiful scenes in cinematic history.
The bamboo forest gives a serene effect😌❤️
In this scene you really see how Li Mu Bai fails to understand Jen... She doesn't just seek martial skill. She wants to escape from her life and her obligations, and misplaces a huge amount of importance on the sword. But literally all he can think about is martial arts... That's why he never got together with Shu Lien (Yeoh)
He was trying to teach her something about being free of tether, how his invincibility comes from his own will
But didn't expect her to risk her life for the sword as easily and was surprised
@@subutaynoyan5372 Yes, like I said, he doesn’t understand her. It’s not just a sword to her, it symbolizes her entire escape.
Uh no. He didn't get together with shu lien because she was the ex of his dead best friend

Oh gosh I love wire work in movies. Of course we know this is impossible to be done but when we’re watching it was such beauty as it was shot in we forget
These movie are not real of course, like revengers.
Wow. You guys really have to point that out 🤦♂️ also no. It wasn’t beautiful. Was sloppy as can be. Can literally tell their upper bodies are harnessed. Especially when they are both on the same stalk and she’s trying to shake it. Yuck.

@@Radionut someone has no idea about ancient Chinese fairytales and that this is essentially one of them lol
Sigh! The good old days before Newton came and discovered Gravity.
ikr
Besides the fact that Newton only defined it, he didn't discover it, there are other forces in the universe besides gravity. For that matter, it is quite possible that there are forces besides gravity, EM, strong & weak. Remember that science is limited by its ability for objective measurement. No objective measurement = no scientific analysis. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist 😉.
Of course, for the purposes of the movie, wires were used 😆
@@dlsamson no way! take it back :D
@@dlsamson and obviously physics can never quite accurately explain or even grasp paranormal, magical and psionic powers (and all forms of telekinesis)..
@@lexsmith8689 Once again it's the measurement problem. Allowing that such phenomena exist, they are primarily phenomena of consciousness & we do not have an objective way to measure consciousness.
While we can measure electrical activity in the brain, we cannot say with a significant level of confidence that consciousness is a result of that electrical activity. An equally valid argument can be made that the electrical activity in the brain is a result of consciousness, not the source. (i.e. the brain is a receiver of an as yet unmeasurable field of energy.)
I miss the days when we could fly;)

Guys don’t be so shocked as to how they can float in air like this. This was very common in ancient China, anyone with great practice and mental focus could achieve this. Until Newton discovered gravity, it all ended.
Haha. That’s absolutely true 😂😂😂😂
the best scene ever, bamboo forest fighting must be a genre of movies
such a beautiful sequence is this film.
Best cinematography was a toss up between Gladiator and CTHD that year but I think this scene might have convinced the Academy to choose CTHD. In another year they would have swept the Oscars, no idea how there were no Best Actor nominations for the Actors. Utterly mesmerising.
"no idea how there were no Best Actor nominations for the Actors. Utterly mesmerising."
Xenophobia, my dude.
Oscars are political nominations, where each group is given to vote specific movie. So previous winning actors nominate new actors, previously won directors the new directors etc. And if the Oscars committee decides that something deserves now the votes, then that is what wins.
Oscars is just one charade and doesn't mean what they are told to show.
Nice job. Pop-up over the translation. Real bright.

2:37 - The ol' two-finger chi probe
I've done this before. Adjust your weight to the bamboo
There was a fight very much like this in an early English issue of Drunken Fist. Complete with one of the characters standing on bamboo.
Lol I was just talking about Drunken Fist with a friend what a coincidence
There is a bamboo fight scene in The Lady Hermit (1971) with Lo Lieh and Cheng Pei-Pei facing each other on top of the trees.
I think a lot of folks misunderstand the scene. She is drawn in by his openness to teaching her before recoiling when he tells her to kneel. She doesn't miss an opportunity to study under him so much as he spoils his chance to teach her. She refuses to be subjugated by anyone or anything and sees the sword as the key to that freedom.
To learn is to be beneath, the humble before the Master, she was not ready for this.
The problem is that she didn't *trust* Li Mu Bai. What Jen wanted was to forge her own destiny. She didn't want to marry because her husband would control her destiny. She didn't want to stay with Lo for similar reasons, even though she loved him. When Li Mu Bai told her to kneel, she heard it in the context of Jade Fox's relationship with Southern Crane - and in the context of Wudan's continued, ongoing refusal to accept women as students.
Li Mu Bai was a good man. He certainly respected Shu Lien as a fighter, and I don't doubt that he would have trained Jen the same as a male student. But Jen didn't know this and *couldn't* know this. Jade Fox was bitter and driven by revenge, but she had a real grievance. Li Mu Bai's tragic flaw - which led in the end to his death - was blindness to the underlying injustices that led Jen to reject his demand that she kneel. And, like most tragedies, this was simultaneously avoidable, almost to the end, if characters had acted differently, but also inevitable because of those characters' flaws.
This, I think, is the key point that is missing from a lot of analyses of this movie. Li Mu Bai may not be responsible for the sins of his forebears and his society. But his blindness to those sins was, itself, a tragic sin. He didn't deserve to die for it. But if everyone got what they deserved, then it wouldn't be a tragedy.
Kneeling isn't really subjugation in Chinese culture though, it's just respect. You kneel to masters, elders, parents... It's like bowing.
That's an interesting analysis.
But I would like to add that in the Chinese audio dialogue, he actually says, "拜師“, translatable as "Greet your master!". In which she replies, "You are dreaming!". So although accepting a master may involve kneeling, it doesn't have the exact connotation as subjugation.
Agreed.

She’s so beautiful
I hate when these clips end!
Why would you show a clip and block the subtitles to said clip with your channel's stamp?
Don't put your logo over subtitles
Such a beautiful story. People in the modern world don't always understand what it means to be overwhelmed by your chi (life force energy). The energy is SO POWERFUL when it enters your mind and body that if you are not prepared for it, it can easily destroy you and/or those around you. Being prepared means you must have a quiet mind. If you do not have control of your own mind, you will be destroyed.
People may laugh at this but it is the truth. Chi follows your thoughts/focus/concentration. If your emotions are out of balance, your chi will be out of balance. If your thoughts are out of balance, your chi will be out of balance. And that means chi running wild through you. This is why that girl had such problems. Her mind was out of control and she was not prepared for higher levels of chi life force energies to be surging through her.
I'll give you an example of what I am talking about. If anger rises up in you and you do not know how to control it, the chi will follow that anger and rapidly grow out of control. It'll start a wildfire in both mind and body. The force can easily grow into pure rage that lashes out at the nearest target. You have to understand that this can be either a physical or mental lashing out!!!! Thoughts CAN do great harm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The monk in the movie would have taught the young girl how to truly control her mind and tame her emotions. He would have taught her how to deal with anger, hate and negative emotions. He would have taught her how to truly have a quiet mind by going beyond "the self" to a point of true "no self." It is only here that the young girl could have had a chance to live a life in balance without raging inside herself.
Without the sword she's weak
If you think she's weak, you weren't paying attention.
@@arielfetters5662 how so
@@arielfetters5662 actually she somewhat is. She beat what’s her name with every weapon she grabbed…………because she was able to slice thru them with ease. If both weapons were of the same caliber she’d have got rocked. Sorry. She isn’t to that level yet without it.
She's not really weak she just relies on it too much... like a child. Other than that she has great skill for her age and Li Mu Bai can see it.
As far as I remember the Green Destiny wields great power in it (or at least that's what the legend says) and her only goal in life is to get the sword to become stronger which is why she's almost possessed by that thought.
But wise words say one's power is not given by the weapon than more coming from within.
So either she doesn't believe it or dorsn't want to accept that; although possessing the sword she still needs training to wield it.
It is a fact to use the aether and almost levitate , but many are not ready for this conversation.

I still wonder if Li Bu only wanted to be her master, or otherwise, he also liked her. Thank you!
I first watched this movie as a kid, and thought, this scene has some "romantic" undertones to it. Of course, I didn't know how to explain it as a kid. I just thought Zhang Zi Yi was really pretty lol. But...It's like a dance between two sword fighters. The way he's chasing her thru a bamboo forest. In a sense, Li Mu Bai probably was attracted to her swordfighting ability, and wanted to be able to teach her and impart his skill and knowledge.
@@TurnOnTheBackburner beautiful explanation, thank you so much
@@luischirinosc I think another interpretation can be reached based on the fact that jade fox mentions that his master was essentially promiscuous despite it going against his established morals that he proudly paraded around. Maybe it could be displaying how that kind of repression of one's own desires and feelings(in this case, Li Bu's feelings for Shu Lien), causes them to come out in uncontrolled ways, that being potentially an attraction to Zhang Ziyi's character. I mean she even mentions this when she has the "is it me or the sword that you want?" moment.
Give ol' Jade some credit, she knows how to make a getaway.
Me encanta esta pelicula, menos la parte romantica de una pareja que echa a perder toda la accion de la pelicula.
