Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung are really the underrated performances in this movie. They had to portray three very different characters and still manage to make the transitions feel organic. Really remarkable work from both of them.
I loved the use of colors and tone in these flashback sequences. Nameless' original account of betrayals and infighting is dyed in red with everyone speaking very rudely. The Emperor's romantacised idea of what transpired is filled with sombre tones and an abundant with light blue colors. And in this scene, where Nameless reveals the truth, everything is more naturally lit and not embelished with any kind of colors.
I guess that's also why the fight with Sky has no color scheme and is shot rather bleak-looking. Because it is the only thing in Nameless' original account that wasn't a lie (aside from the fact that Sky lost on purpose iirc), and stays the same in every variation of the story.
Which begs a question: in the flashback where Broken Sword fights the Emperor (ruclips.net/video/_fx12_FLtsc/видео.html), what does the green symbolize?
Lackus Shock: I believe using Chinese symbolism of colours, red represents love/passion, white-death... I'm not sure about blue and green. But overall the movie is visually stimulating and epic
@@wolfpackleaderalpha I think the green symbolizes youth, like the leaves of a tree before autumn since the flashback took place when both Broken Sword and Snow were younger and more impulsive.
Quite simply one the best martial arts [wuxia] movies ever. The colours, music and artful fight scenes are so majestic. A beautiful film that has really has not been bettered in this genre.
For those of you who don't understand what's going on Flying Snow(Maggie Cheung) was angry with Broken Sword(Tony Leung) for not killing the emperor(Daoming Chen), when he had the opportunity do so with no guards able to stop him. That's why Nameless(Jet Li) agreed to help her. The one who was was assisting Broken Sword was Moon(Ziyi Zhang). Here are some spoilers If the cast of the movie is wearing red then that's Nameless' madeup story of how Broken Sword, Flying Snow & Sky(Donnie Yen) were all killed. If the cast is wearing blue then that's the emperor's version of the story & yes the emperor knew that Nameless trying to kill him. If the cast is wearing white then that's when Nameless tells the emperor the truth.
Have you seen him in my favorite Ip Man movie? the Grandmaster? He was so suave, and cool. He looks like an Asian Obama Kung fu bad ass in the movies watch it!! 10/10 recommend.
I was more surprised with Maggie though... Got used to seeing her as the clumsy girl friend in Jackie chan movies and to suddenly see her portraying such character was indeed mind blowing
@@DHeartXIn ancient China, this kind of sword was mostly performed in the form of performances, and would be performed at banquets. Actual battles or wars were mainly long-handled weapons.
Beautiful movie. THe music accentuates the action. (I saw this as a younger person and it was beautiful because the hero died in the end. What he sought to bring into reality had purpose but he did follow it to the end.)

Chinese culture, mate. The fighting isn't made to be realistic, it's to make it glamorous. The fighters being so superhuman also serves them as ''Enlightened/tranceded with their mastery of the sword'' sort of a thing.
It's mostly CGI now and it's very unfortunate. But from what i have observed Chinese historical dramas still include realistic fight choreography. But anything Wuxia nowadays uses bad CGI. Brotherhood of Blades 1&2 has good swordplay and Reign of Assassins is also really good.

she was really something special.
The music is so damn good, it's one of the things I love the most about this awesome movie

Tony Leung is such a great actor. His eyes says it all.
