    I think the initial declutter , while it may feel wasteful in some ways, helps us consider and appreciate what comes into our home after, so overall there is less consumption and waste.

      This is so true. It forces you to face decisions you made in the past. The discomfort of that has helped me to change my habits.

    Since I declutter my clothes, (no more work clothes, sold, tossed, donated), I no longer need to change seasons. All my clothes are in drawers or hung up in the closet. So liberating!

    99% of the time once I get sidetracked from the possible impulse purchase I completely forget about it. I am at the point where I only buy to replace something that broke or wore out and even then I really think about if it even needs to be replaced. Because of arthritis I don’t go puttering around stores which helps immensely. Have a great day.

    I want/need to try the writing it down for impulse buys. I don’t shop too much but occasionally I go through a spurt where I start buying things, but usually the things I end up decluttering are my impulse buys. I also declutter regularly now. I went through a big whole house declutter in 2020 and since I’ve fallen in love with it and with keeping my house simplified. It’s very freeing and rewarding to clean out and organize all my spaces, big and small.

    Another great video!! For me the two hardest categories are sentimental and just in case items. Each year I’m improving and able to declutter a bit more in those categories. It’s also helpful that my kids are grown so they can decide for themselves which childhood sentimental things they’d like to save. ❤😊🐦

      Yes I feel the same way about loving interior design and enjoying seeing what others do in their homes. I’m still drawn to decor items but feel less need to purchase as many as I have in the past. I remind myself that I don’t like having to dust a lot of items.

      I just cleaned out my serving platters, bowls etc and I have 4 boxes of things to donate. I have mixed feelings about some of the things because they're really nice and I like them a lot. However I have much more than I need and some had never been used while others hadn't been used in over 5 years. I'm trying to think of the people who will find them at the thrift shop and be happy to use them. Passing things on is a good thing! Right? 😐🐦

    So all of my kids are now either teenagers or young adults still at home. One of them declutters often. But the other two areas of our home are a bit overwhelming. How would you approach this?

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  9 месяцев назад +2

      Well I can't really add to the conversation about teenagers since I am not there yet, but to a degree even now I let my 2 older boys keep what they want in their room. As long as it fits in their room and we can keep it organized then they can have the items. I have come to the conclusion that certain things that seem like junk to me are important to them so as long as it's kept in order I just let it go. =) But I have heard of some parents paying their kids for each trash bag they fill up to donate as an incentive.

      I've kept stuff just in case, we had a major leak under our house from neighbours, mould got in, we thought we'd solved the issue but next winter even more stuff was getting musty. I'd gotten rid of a lot because I'd had to clean up but
      I watched Shannon with her Mom one night, next day I got up and PURGED. I had to get those things out I'd been hanging onto before they were destroyed and into the hands of someone who would appreciate them. I'm not a boomer but I understand that mentality too. I love history and to look at old things but I'm not taking good care of them if I'm not using them and not passing them on to someone who will. That's how I looked at it.

    Why aren’t your children putting their things away themselves? Label or put a picture on the container where the items belong. Sing the clean up song. You get it out, you put it up. I had 3 sons with a play room and this worked wonderfully. Of course I started when they were toddlers.

      I love your simplicity and down to earth approach! I totally relate to everything you said! I had to stop watching so many home decor type videos because I was trying to live up to that and would get discouraged thinking my house will never look like theirs or I would buy more stuff because I thought it would help look like their Pinterest looking homes and organizational perfect looks almost like trying to be “like the jones” even though that’s not me! So even though they’re helpful for me they just give me more anxiety so I look for videos like yours “relatable” 🥰
