Thank you! I’m so inspired by you. You keep it real. No obsession with “aesthetic”. No click bait (which is guaranteed to make many people lose trust and respect). No guilt. No pressure. No know-it-all attitude. No judgment.❤️ Just generously helpful.
Something else that helps me and my family that is really simple but makes a huge difference, is whenever I start to correct a child or disagree or feel irritated with someone, I quickly ask myself, “What’s more important, this issue, or the relationship?” Puts things into perspective fast! So easy to let it go or to be lighthearted and encouraging.
I love that tip! I am always working on my reactions to things with my kids. =)
I saw on fb recently where a woman's friend was talking about her childhood. The woman said that when she was a kid whenever she spilled something or broke something her mother would say, " I love you more than the vase" or in your case, " i love you more than the rug". So the lady tried it with her kids. She said that it made all the difference between freaking out or yelling, etc... or understanding it was an accident and taking away most of the kids' stress and her stress. I love this idea.
Love that!
I say to my kids ‘Can we get another rug? Can we get another you?’
I like that.
How could people watch you and not subscribe?!? You are awesome! Love your tips, your honesty and, of course, love your mom! Lol ❤️
Thank you so much!!
One thing that has really simplified getting ready is I just wear my clothes in order. I have "at home" clothes hanging separately from church clothes and then I just pick the next item at the start of the line. No thinking or decisions required.
I have been using up my skincare hoard from before the pandemic,😮.
1 more jar and no more department store creams. I have simplified my skincare.
I love your simple life. I’ve tried to do the same thing but I’m almost the exact age of your sweet mom. It’s amazing how your brain calms down when you are debt free and declutter your house. Worth the hours of work I put into it. ❤
Always do what works best for you and your family. Just because decades ago someone decided that something should be done a certain way doesn’t mean it’s the correct way or that there is a correct way. Why do people care about how other people do things in their homes? As for being over scheduled, I think parents put their children in so many activities because they think they have to. Maybe friends and family will judge them if they don’t expose their children to everything in life. In my very humble opinion 😂😂😂 I think children are overscheduled these days and are suffering with anxiety more than ever before. Let our children be children because once they’re in highschool and beyond there will be little time for rest and relaxation. I think if we all could live a more simplified life and be content with what we have or at least not want as much we would be happier and healthier.
Wholeheartedly agree!
You are absolutely spot on!
I agree! Especially with the part about kids being over-scheduled. I see kids that look so tired and worn out and I think it's because they are doing too much. I love that my kids have time to get bored and creative on their own, digging in the dirt, building Lego structures, making forts, riding bikes and so much more.
Simple living is so freeing. I stopped watching the news many years ago because I needed a break from the drama. I noticed that hearing about it or not, my life didn't change, so I'm not going back. Here's to living within your own community and feeling happy :)
I agree, 100%!! Nice one! 😊👍
I have noticed as a get older that everything always seems to work out eventually - so I have stopped stressing over virtually everything - it’s made such a big difference to my life xx
This is so true! I am seeing the same thing. =)
I stopped watching or listening to the news 20 years ago. Best decision. I end up hearing what I need to know. 😊
My mom had 12 kids, lots of spilled spaghetti, she always said “don’t cry over spilled milk” your a great mom Shannon
Thank you! I hope you have a nice week. ps. Your mom must be amazing to deal with 12 kids =)
a saint for sure@@shannontorrens1
Shannon, when our rugs get old or stained we put them in the garage to live out the rest of their usefulness. We live in Michigan so lots of snowy boots and wet shoes. The rugs help to prevent slips.
Great idea!
I also live in Michigan and that is exactly what do.
I laughed at your Simplify Your Brain comment. It’s so true!
I have recently adopted several of your suggestions. Especially avoiding the stress from broadcast news and not sweating the small stuff. I am so happy you have realized these things at your young age. I, on the other hand, am your mom’s age! Better late than never 🙂
It's always better late than never! We always have the opportunity to make big changes no matter what our age (and I love that)!
So especially in an election year if you never look at or listen to the news what helps you know who to vote for or is it just a straight party ticket and take your chances?
I just read about the candidates and use that information to make a decision.
Love your videos, Shannon! Always feels like I’m listening to a friend. Agree 100% with your points, especially about not watching TV and not following “rules.” I haven’t owned a TV in 2 years. People think I am crazy, but I love how clean and simple it makes my home look and my mind feel. Thanks for all that you do! 💙
Completely agree about the news. I also subscribe to one email for news highlights and it totally works! The news on the tv is often fear mongering since that gets the views 😢
Yes! I agree. The news is rarely the full picture of what is actually happening.
Repeat meals.....i did this when my kids were growing up. I need to get back to this. Thanks.
It saves me a lot of time and the great thing is I know how to make them quickly too.
What great video! Hopefully your followers will gain some knowledge from it. At 67 years old I can honestly say the more you get rid of the better and brighter your home feels. I had trunks of items from family members who had passed, I went through all that stuff slowly and now I have a few things from each person in a single standing curio cabinet. Freed up an entire closet and I actually get to see the things. When ever someone tells you that you have to do something a certain way, just ask them "who said". I love watching youandyour mom. Wish my daughter would do like you do.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I hope you have a great day!
Amen!! On all fronts!!❤️
I only have a rug at my childrens play area, exactly because of these accidently happend often, its easier to clean the floor than rug.
I dont own a tv, I only watch RUclips, thats it. No news. And I dont miss it.
OMGosh! I love what you said Shannon about not doing what rules others put on us. I stopped doing that recently as well and it has freed me up to move in my life the way I want to. And if others hate how we put a sheet or what we eat or do in our lives, it's too bad!!!
Yes! I am the same.
So funny about the rug. I didn't have end tables in my living room to discourage any drinks on the sofa or rug. Now I have tables now but no coasters again to discourage drinks. Mom always says "you need to be flexible about your stuff." In my defense it's my first house where I make all the decisions.
Oh dear -- I'm chuckling no end about the eldest boy dropping the bowl of spaghetti two weeks in a row! My brothers and I used to do that sort of thing too at that age. They're clutzy then because they're growing up so fast. Not always in control of hand or foot movements.
So glad you stayed calm and did what you could to clean the rug, without buying 100 different rug cleaning products, which often have toxic chemicals. And -- the rug looks fine! Thanks for another great video, Shannon. You're on my Favorites list! (And as pretty as a young Sophia Loren.) 😊💜👍
Hello Caroline, I think that is the current issue (a case of going through a clumsy stage). Thank you so much for the nice comment and I hope you have a wonderful week. =)
I'm only using YOU TUBE... and have to reduce my time on it. I declutter my comments, likes and unsubscribe a couple times a year.
I'm glad you chose to keep kids in 1 activity rather than many. Such a smart decision!🎉
Thank you! I am the same with RUclips, I do have to limit myself. I love a lot of different creators, but there are often weeks where I have to miss videos and catch up later because I need more time to live my life too. =)
You looked pretty with your hair and your floral dress 😊
Thank you so much 🙂
Thanks for sharing your convictions, they really resonate with me.
I get a boost from watching your wonderful common sense posts.
Wow, thank you
This use to happen to my son and it happened for years. He is now 6ft 4in tall. I believe that it was because of his rapid growth that he had to get accustomed and coordinated.
Yes! I think that is what is happening here too. My son is really tall for his age and he just had a major growth spurt.
Have you done a full video on how you manage your household paperwork like bills, important mail etc? It's my biggest weakness to want to sit and handle it and then what do I do with it once it's paid?
I have a few videos on dealing with paper clutter. I don't think either of them go into the exact system I use right now though. =) I will add that to my list of videos to work on.
Those shelves over the counter look great, but it’s 1 more thing you need to dust. For me, the less to dust the better. One exception are my plants😂.
Haha to be honest I don't dust them very often and for some reason, they are the least dusty place in our home.
Good one, I say to sweat the petty stuff, and don’t pet the sweaty stuff. Kids will be kids and spills and stains are for ever, however you can get rid of big clunky stuff.
Terrific and helpful video, Shannon. Just why I love your channel best :)
Shannon, FOLEX CARPET SPRAY! IT'S AMAZING and pretty much takes out anything. I haven't had a stain yet that hasn't come out and I have cream colored carpet 😊
Thanks for the tip!
I agree. Folex is amazing
Toward the beginning of today’s video, you showed a pretty still life picture with oranges, and I was thinking that a picture with lemons would also look nice in your kitchen to go along with your countertop colors. I had to chuckle to myself as your clip of painting and hanging up a picture with lemons came up. 😄 I enjoy the content in your videos, Shannon, and this one was full of great suggestions.
Thank you! Our kitchen is full of citrus LOL. =)
We only allowed our children to participate in one outside activity at a time as well. It became a fun thing not work. I also stopped watching and listening to the news. I find out what I choose. I’m so much happier and calmer.
Shannon, May I just comment on how stunning you looked today in your video. Very natural and soft…. Blessing to you and your family 🙏🏼
Thank you so much!
Great video Shannon. Thank you❣️
I quit watching the news when I got custody of my 2 grands in 2017. Bluey is my favorite show now!
We love Bluey too!
I used your techniques and let me tell you, I’ve never been happier. Simplification is the way to go for me from now on.
Subscribed. Been watching for a long time. I am older than your Mom and enjoy you as well as both of you together. I have been decluttering for quite a while but each time she is on it spurs me to move something else out either by donation, give away, or trash. Like minds. You both are great motivators.
🙂
Good for you, Shannon, for saying no to all of that extra internet stuff. I honestly admit some days I spend too much time on RUclips. It used to be Facebook. I also repeat my meals a lot too. Cooking isn't my favorite thing, so I want simple, easier things to make. Your succulents look beautiful outside of your window, and that one you showed with Levi is huge! Have a wonderful day!
Hi Shannon: Love your lemon stillife🍋🍋🍋You have such talent; thanks for sharing🥰PS Your homemade bread was beautiful! Next time, maybe, walk us through your recipe and process?
Thank you! I hope you have a nice weekend.
Just have to say you look stunning today, so soft and feminine! 💕 Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks for a simpler life. Im slowly working towards minimalism, having just had my sixth baby. I'm easily overwhelmed and triggered by the clutter and excess. I look forward to your videos every week!
Thank you for being here! Congratulations on your baby, how exciting. =)
I stopped watching the news years ago because we all need peace of mind and the news is all bad.
Yes! I completely agree.
Your backyard space is insanely gorgeous!
My children are long grown up but I now have cats who get upset tummy’s a bit and they would always be sick on the rugs. We have floor boards throughout so plenty of place they could have been sick but no always the rug. In the end rather than stressing about it I got rid of the rug because it was hard for me to clean with many artificial joint. I have never regretted it. The house is still cosy and if the cats are sick it’s easily wiped up and there is no stress. Wish I had done it when my boys were younger too.
You're such a smart lady to be doing all of these things to simplify your life. Your family is benefitting greatly. I'm 65 and did several of the things you mentioned when my family was younger and it made a huge difference in our lives. I'm still all about simplifying. (And I think we have the same rug!)
#6 Limit extra activities- I wish more families would institute this rule - so much stress in my piano students who have so little time to themselves because they are in too many activities.
Shannon, wonderful vlog today. I stopped watching TV years ago. The unrealness of the whole thing and the commercials drove me crazy.
Never read a newspaper except for the Sunday comics.
I feel like we're very much on the same page regarding everything.
Cheers
I have already done most of what you listed today. I find, like you, that I am calmer and have more time. Thank you for your videos! ❤️😮
That is wonderful, thank you for being here.
@@shannontorrens1 ❤️
Kids love spaghetti. You can add so many veggies. We had that on repeat when our kids were young.❤
I love your painting of lemons! It’s beautiful!
You’re so authentic ❤ I am a mom to three aged 2-9. I recommend a green machine rug cleaner with a good solvent. Works like a charm and very small to store! I am a very spartan minimalist but I love clean carpets 😂❤
Thanks for the tip!
I always love your simplified philosophy. We just came out of a difficult season of life and I love that I know it won’t take me to long to reset my home. Your video has motivated me to simplify things even further. 😊
Completely agree! I’ve never been one to conform. I also disagree with a lot of “traditions” especially wedding stuff. Probably a separate issue ha ha! Make your bed or don’t!
What I really need to know is how you keep your plants happy. I'm desperate to have a house full of plants like you, but I can't keep them happy for very long! Maybe a video on that would be a great idea. ❤️
Through the years I have learned what plants are easy to keep alive LOL. I love pothos plants because they are so easy to keep alive. =)
Exactly. It is impossible to kill a pothos, a philodendron, or a ficus. I stay away from dramatic plants. Also, a zanzibar plant and a clussia plant are super easy. My pickiest plant is my pilea ( chinese money plant ). Another trick to plant success is watering less over more. Overwatering is a death trap for sure. I love having plants over trendy decor that feels useless❤❤
Agree with you, mostly, about limiting news and social media. However, at this really crucial time in our political situation, I feel we need to keep up with what's happening. It's not just all about making us feel relaxed by ignoring what's happening outside of our little lives. We need to stay informed enough to make good choices at election time. We could face some very serious consequences if we don't pay sone attention!
I love all of your points! ❤
My daughter recommended your channel, she is a minimalist and I am on that path now after years of buying, buying and more buying. Love your channel, please share how to set up a capsule wardrobe. Currently I am not working but planning to go back to work. I’m not so sure on what to keep and what to get rid of. Thanks so much!
Thank you! Please tell your daughter thank you for sharing my channel too =) I will work on that. I do have a few videos on decluttering clothes and capsule wardrobes, but you might have to dig deep into my channel to find them.
Thank you so much for this video. You are a breath of fresh air 😊
Have you tried Folex on the rug? I clean house for friends and at a party they had, someone dropped a meatball on their cream-colored carpet. I used the Folex on it several days later and now you would never be able to find where the spot was.
Hey Shannon, great video! I do repeat meals as well! It makes it easy cuz I can have a lot of staples just on hand, making grocery shopping simple. When my kids were young we did the same thing and each child could pick one extra curricular activity for each season, and it made life much more manageable when they were school aged. I am the same way about news stories! I don't look at news source websites anymore. Thanks for sharing what is working for you!💖
Hi Joy, It really does help to simplify these things. I hope you are having a great weekend.
The back end of that saying..."DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF," is....ITS 'ALL' SMALL STUFF! Chew on that a while! : )
It's so true!
Love these!
Scroll hole 😂. Exactly right. I need to do better at this.
I love the point you make about not getting kids involved in too may extra curricular activities. When my boys, both ADHD, were young, I decided one activity at a time was enough. Kids need time just to learn from their own play and creative exploration. Family time and time with grandparents is valuable. I enjoy your channel and finally subscribed!
Thank you so much for subscribing! Happy to have you here.
:)
Shannon, You should try Grandma's Secret Spot Remover on your rug. We had a spot we could not get off our carpet & I heard about the spot remover from a quilter & it took the spot away. It's s awesome stuff. 😊
I love that you have included simplifying your mind in this. I will hopefully be publishing my third book very soon and it is around this concept 😊 I have been a subscriber for a while and I've been excitedly watching your numbers creep up toward the 100,000 subscribers 🤞 this happens soon 😀
Thank you so much! You will have to share your book with us when it's for sale =)
I like what you doing is pretty cool thank you for talking about it. It’s pretty awesome. Gives me idea.
Well said Shannon! Declutter your life and keep what's important. This can look differently for everyone. As we get older, we realize that the spilled spaghetti is just not worth getting upset over. It happens! I'm learning, it's not just the situation that happens, it's how we decide to handle it that's makes the difference. Thanks so much for your inspiring videos! Hi to Kathy as well!❤
You are a very wise woman 😊❤️
Hey, if you arent subscribed, lets try to get Shannon to 100,000!
Wow Thank you Laura! I really appreciate that =)
I always look forward to your Sunday videos! Thanks for some great tips!
Thank you! I hope you have a nice day.
Such a wonderful list to consider! You are such a practical inspiration!!! Thank you!!!!
Thank you so much!
Totally agree about “The Rules.” Lol. I would also say holidays, traditions, customs, protocols….Like you said…Bcuz why? And who made that up anyways? Lol.
Ditto also for media telling me what to watch. Same could be said also for ads and “ad men.” Also again Bcuz why? And who said that was the most important news? And what made them think I have time for all their sales pitches anyways? Lol.
Love your hair curly like that!
Thank you!!
Thank you Shannon for always inspiring me. Every time I watch your video I feel inspired to do something in my home and life. This is so much better than wasting time on less meaningful things. I've learnt so much since becoming a minimalist 2years ago. Shop my own home has become a favourite. And Decluttering as I go about my day. I get excited when seasons change to declutter seasonal clothes. I'm also inspired to get some art for my walls. Thank you ❤🇿🇦
I'm so glad! I hope you have a nice day.
Try the pink stuff spray on your rug! Also hydrogen peroxide helps pull up the red sauce!
We dumped cable too...we get lots of free over the air channels, you tube, freevee, pluto, and tubi....more than enough to watch if wanted...
I loved this video. Even though some of the points don't apply anymore, since our children are adults. I happily recalled that several of your things we did the same, especially only having the kids do one activity at a time. I still follow that and do not like to be overscheduled; makes me stressed. Ahhh the spilled spaghetti, our daughter when she was around 3 years old? had a spell of spilling her milk all over the table at the start of dinner.
Shannon, thank you for this video! This is exactly what I needed, I have been feeling very overwhelmed with 3 kids lately and have been wondering what I need to do to simplify. I will definitely be watching this video again and taking notes!
Thank you! Whenever I start to get overwhelmed I take a little time and think about what I can stop doing. This usually frees up a little time in my day and then I can focus on the few things that must get done.
New subscriber here! Hello! I’m enjoying your channel. Thanks for inspiring me. ❤😊🐦
Awesome! Thank you!
Im Subscribed i have been watching for several years ❤🎉
My go-to stain cleaner is Biokleen Bac Out. Smells so good, gets stains out, and easy on the environment.
I love 409 foam carpet cleaner for spills. I also have a little green machine and use that but also use it to clean our couch and loveseat since we have pets. Helps keep smells down too!
Great tip! I will check that out =)
Love, love, love your hair like that!
Get you some Finchberry soap, takes stains out of anything, removes makeup great.
I love this so much as I came to many of these realisations about two years ago. 😊🇮🇪
I love love love your channel. This is the same mindset that I strive to be in.
Thank you!
You always have such great tips & suggestions. I've put a lot of them to use and appreciate hanging out with you!
Very helpful video , thank you so much. I’m new to your channel , I’m loving it so far xx
Welcome!!
Great ideas, thank you Shannon. Just last night I decided to reinstall time limits on certain apps and to also have my phone locked off certain times of the day. I have also taken a couple of commitments out of my schedule so I am not so busy. Have a great week! 😊
That's a great idea! I hope you have a good week =)
Hello from Georgia! I enjoy your videos so much! I love how you and your Mom get along! You both give me motivation to decrease the clutter in my home. I've accumulated so much in the 38 years I've been in my home.
Wise words.🤗
❤
Great, real advice!
❤
Love your dress , can you say where you bought it?
Yes I will link it in the description box =)
❤😊
Shannon, did you try a little peroxide on a qtip for those spgetti sauce stains?
I would subscribe again if they would let me!😅
Thank you so much for being here! I will try that on the spots I couldn't get out. =)
Hi there sweetie pie hope you are well great ideas to simplify your life love from Eugenie your friend xxx ✨🏡🌻💖
Everyone does things different. I don't do things the same as my Mother and my Daughter doesn't things my way.
