Hello! Last year, my brother and I disposed of our parent's home contents that had been there for 53 years! It was quite the undertaking! My parents had bookshelves of slides, photo books, boxes of photos, and reel-to-reel movies. Overwhelming doesn't even begin to describe how we felt. This experience left me with the mantra, "I'm not doing that to my children!" It did take months, but I went through our family photos - everyone has a 'photo box' to pass along (one day). They are mostly in order and dated on the back. I agree with many of your tips as to where to begin. Thank you for sharing your story to help others!

I spent the pandemic isolation sorting thousands of photos. Some dating back to the 1860's. I gathered all of them onto a large table in an unused room upstairs in my house. It took months. It was a very emotional process. Now 99% of the photos have been sorted and put into albums with names, dates & explanations. At least one half of the photos have been discarded. Finally, I will set aside which albums I will give to each of my children. A mighty task, but, worth it!

I'm so stuck in sorting photos. It gives me anxiety that I have so much, but still want to do it, pair it down and share with our kids. I already threw away maybe 2000 paper pictures and more than 10 000 digital. It's crazy. It's sad photos became like a heavy burden, instead of something positive. We decluttered the whole house twice during the last years. But I could not go through all the photos.
You are doing so well! You too inspire me so much, and rise my engergy. I don't call myself a minimalist at all, and don't think I ever will be. I have a home that is beautiful, clean and airy with decorations.
Love your channel! Thank you for sharing.

I have been putting off this project since I have 50 boxes of family photos and memorabilia in my basement from the past 120+ years. My dad took tons of photos, and printed doubles or triples. He was also in the family genealogy, so every time a relative died, they sent all of the photos and memorabilia to my dad. Now it’s all in my basement.

I’ve scanned all my photos and family history photos. I make small digital photo books for many people as gifts. One of my favorite things to do. I made two special books for my dad when he was in final stages of dementia. One was of his kids, grands and great grandchildren with captions. I also made one of his childhood up to his wedding. He and mom grew up as next door neighbors and their friendship and courtship are a special memory. The professionals at his dementia facility actually used the books during his therapy.

Yes … a large job! Congrats Cathy!!! I inherited large tubs and tubs of photos from my mother as she was the last of her generation prior to her passing. The weekend she gave them to me, she spent time with me and we sorted thru a lot of the pics - so I had first hand (recorded) knowledge of what she remembered. She felt bad ‘dumping’ it all on me. I had already been working with my dad’s sister that had been the genealogist for their family for years, which gave me a head start on how to go about sorting, purging, etc.
I went thru and pulled the photos/info I felt was most important, sorting out the extra stuff for each of my siblings. I then had a sibling get together one evening and gave them each THEIR box. In addition I had a large box of duplicates and photos I didn’t want that they could ‘paw’ thru and choose what they wanted from vacations, family reunions and every day life - but, there were still lots of photos left. Next I invited the cousins to come sort thru what was left. Lots of great laughter, tears, stories were shared. Once all the EXTRA MESS was out of my house, I put things away for over a year as by this time we had lost mother and then 9 days later my little sister and I needed time to grieve.
After I felt up to working on them again, I started filing them by year/event/people, while also doing a bit more purging. Then I started entering them into a digital form thru Blurb.com. It took about a year for me to gather it all together in book form and contacting my brothers and cousins for any extra memories they had before it was ready to be printed. That Christmas I gave a copy of the family book to each of my children, brothers and cousins that had helped. I also gave them the address should they wish to give copies to their own children/grandchildren.
So far I have 9 family history books, 2 large vacation books, 1 family recipes and just finished a book compilation of MY info from school year books and personal photos to take to my 60-year class reunion this year. Also, I am now working on a book of my husband & my 50+ years together …. with one to two pages per each year. We downsized and moved out of state to share a home with our daughter & husband 3 years ago. I was so grateful that I had tackled the photo project rather than have to move all those TUBS and then find space to store them once we got here. I just tucked the books into the bottom of my suitcase with my clothing and then set them on the shelf when I got here.
Keep at it … it is definitely worth the work you are putting into the project now. And, Shannon and her family will always have the memories you are saving!

I had 5 closets full of photos…. And I was way overwhelmed. My hubby and I decided to downsize and move to Texas. So before I left my large home (needed the room!) my sister and I pulled everything out! The first thing we did, was toss blurry photos and any photos that didn’t have a person in it, and duplicates! We had to do this all at once (not separately) cuz we didn’t have time to keep fingering through each photo. A week later… 9 hour days we got 95% done. Now I’m settled in TX and I am so thankful for my sister who helped me. I decided to pull out my photos again… now 1 closet full. I fingered through and weeded out even more. This time I separated my husbands family/ancestors, and our family/kids/grandkids. I skipped worrying about dates and years. On a few important ones I did write on the back the year…. But I just wanted organization! I have a window storage now with my hubby’s family…. And one hope chest with our family kids. No more closets! I never even looked at the photos before cuz all it did was remind me of a big chore I needed to do. Now I can look at my photos and each one is super meaningful. From now on I will be placing my future photos on USB drives. I have 15,000 on my phone. 😂

I still have heritage photos to go through as well as all my digital photos!! The plan is to make a scrapbook for each of my sons. I've been saying that for the past 25 years🙃 Thanks for your video!! Great Tips! I am in the process of doing this now. I am 29 and am currently living with my parents. I have been slowly going through our photos, as well as the ones that my Dad's parents had. My grandparents were born in the 20's and raised during the great depression and they saved everything. My grandmother had over 60 albums stacked in her closet, not to mention photos in frames, boxes and drawers. I am still finding pictures when I look through books and misc. boxes. I have gone through all of the pictures and have given away a lot to my Uncles, Aunt's, cousins and other family members, but there are still tons of pictures left over. I am also into Genealogy so keeping most of the older photos is really important to me. My plan is to do scrapbook albums. I have started slowly organizing one for me (birth through high school) and then do one for my Dad and then redo the one that my grandmother made for my Mom (I found some more pictures to add to it). I hope to then work on the scrapbooks for the older family pictures after this.
I had originally thought doing an album on my grandmother's childhood and her extended family, one for my grandfather and his family and then one of them starting with their dating, marriage etc. Not really sure how to organize it all yet. My grandparents had 5 kids and I have pictures of all of them, plus my Dad's Aunts, Uncles, and cousins, not to mention pictures of the great grandparents, great Aunts and Uncles, great grandparent's cousins and friends and even some 2nd and 3rd great grandparents. The dates range from the 2000's back to the late 1800's ( Tintypes and cardboard photos). I would estimate that there are probably over 10,000 pictures! It will get done it will just take some time. Thanks for any tips or suggestions that you can give me. Again, such a great video.

Great job! Yes, it’s ongoing. I’m 49 and have inherited all my parents’ photos after losing my mom 22 years ago and dad 1 year ago. As I started looking through photos, it was natural to edit down their memories like business associates or landscapes. Naturally lots of bad lighting or bad angles or even double exposures to edit out. Like Kathy said, I edited down similar angle photos in a single event. This becomes easy after I organize by year. Then I break each year up by month. Our wedding almost 26 years ago…about 10” tall stack of photos, Overwhelming for a one day event! So broke into sub categories: Morning Of, Church Ceremony, Post Outdoor Park shots, and Reception. Further sub categorized. For example, by people or place or time. The point is enjoy looking at the photos from whatever highly photographed event, Group and subgroup photos until you can work with a number at a time. You will quickly identify doubles or similars. This is best done in multiple passes over a period of time to give your mind rest from thousands of micro decisions.

A few suggestions I’d like to add…. 1. On the back of the printed photos write the info as if no one knows who any one is. A few general down the line might not know who Aunt Sally is. Write Sally Smith daughter of or sister of. Dates and places as well. 2. On scanning- I suggest loading everything onto an external hard drive. What if your computer crashes and all your photos and hard work are lost. I make 2 copies and keep one in a fire proof safe. Also while scanning add all the info date, people places in the “name” of file when saving. Then when you’re looking for a certain event or a certain person all you have to do is type their name in the search bar and all the photo they are in come up . Saves a lot of time. Great video

Loved this video! I have such an appreciation for this video as someone who had a TON of family photos to deal with. I am the youngest of 5 and I inherited my mom & dad's photos and papers ( birth and death certificates of ancestors, etc.) I did not want to hand down a jumble of pictures and papers to my kids when I am gone (I have 6!) so I have worked very hard to sort, organize, scan and store what I had. I used the 5x7 containers your mom did to store pictures and I labeled them by families - my parents, my mom's parents, etc. I used 4x6 sized containers for the smaller photos for each of those families. I also use Family Search and Ancestry so I have meticulously scanned and uploaded photos to each of those sites. It took a lot of time but I worked on it an hour here and there most everyday till it was done! It feels soooo good to have it organized and usable! And the great this about having everything scanned in is that you can easily share them with people! ❤️ Great job!

What a fabulous job!! I have spent the last couple of months going through every scrapbook I made, I was a Creative Memories consultant, so there are many! I took a picture of all of the pictures in the album as well as loose pictures, and made Google Albums for groups of years. I went back to my parents and grandparents! I love having these albums in Google Photos for my family. I am going to store them on USB drives and put them in our safe for all of my kids. I then took photos of the family treasures and keepsakes and added text to them of why each item is important, who made it or who it belonged to and its age. Since I'm very minimal this was easy to do. I am loving having the Google Album with our family items that are displayed in our home or in my husband's and my one memory tub that we share. I have enjoyed the process of going through the photos, the wonderful memories, and special times so much! It is such a blessing to know where all of my photos are and have them all in one place!!

It just gets to be too much, it’s not worth that much stress and time, because no one after me is going to care nor want even 1/2 of them. I’m not offended that they won’t ; I’m just stating a fact.

Good timing! My eldest daughter will be 40 tomorrow (how?!!) and I was asked for photos of her childhood - which of course were all physical format... I spent a long time pulling all the photos, boxes and albums together, sorting them into piles, discarding fuzzy ones and brittle plastic albums and generally tidying them up, then dividing them up for me and my three girls and putting each girl's pics into chronological order and then digitising a select few for the "party". I won't be getting rid of the physical photos because I know (not simply distrust) that digital is not "forever" (they told us that when CDs came out LOL) and had I not had physical photos I would never have been able to make the wonderful photobook for my grandma's 100th birthday that she loved till the day she died. Thanks to digital I have almost no photos from 2000-2010, because they were lost from old cameras and laptops, that makes me so sad for my younger two girls. I may digitise more and make family books for the girls, but my own personal, curated and decluttered collection stays right here with me to enjoy and show the grandkids - naturally also the old family photos dating back to 1893!

I use sticky notes on the back of the photos with as much info as I know. I've started separating them by person so that when someone passes we can pull all the photos of them for a presentation. I too have been able to delight distant and close relatives and even children of my parents friends with family photos they didn't have.

I think you both are such great examples of what families should be doing. I have gone through all my photos of my kids and divided them up and have given them to them. I have gone through my parents photos and thrown away the unnecessary photos. I am stalled at the next stage so you are giving me motivation.

Love this video. I just cleaned out my 5’x10’ storage space and had thousands of photos and albums (I’ve been a scrapbooker since 1999). I also went thru the pics and got rid of bad and duplicate pictures. I took the pictures I wanted to keep out of the albums so I didn’t have to keep the albums anymore. Now comes the sorting process where I will put family pics on thumb drives for each of my family members. Very freeing

I’ve been on the photo organising journey for a few years. I am also the keeper of all of the Family and Ancestral photos. Your videos encouraged me to declutter unneeded, duplicate, blurry photos. I did that. Now I have to re position all of the photos in the albums and combine some. I’ll get back at it but what a challenge!! 🥴 your video was very encouraging!! ❤

Omg I started doing this too.!!! I made newhoto books into photo albums and scrap book with old artifacts combined. It was also emotional for me. I am a 68 year old only child. It's been my honor to do this. Because I want to keep them but must be organized. Love you and your mum together. She is my age. I'm in jersey. Married and retired. Love your channel.

Thanks for sharing your family photo organizing/decluttering journey with us. You've given me some great ideas to help me with mine. Just yesterday, my two daughters came to my house, and we went through a large bin of photos together. They didn't leave until nearly 2 am, but we all enjoyed laughing and sharing memories. In hindsight, I wish I had the pictures more organized before my oldest daughter pulled them out of the envelopes (along with the negatives). I had written snippets of information (such as dates, events, and locations) on the outside of each envelope, but now it's a jumble of negatives and photos (lost envelopes with the written info), so I need to reorganize the mess again.

I recently bought a clear plastic photo holder, just like the smokey gray one your mom has, but it’s for 4x6 photos. When you mentioned that you were looking for one that you really liked and what would work, I thought, oh, I wonder if they know about the one I bought, lol
I have yet to start sorting and using, but your video has great information to know before I start, so thank you! 😊

I so appreciate when you showcase your Mom decluttering her belongings. Five years ago I was given all the family photos (unorganized) from my in-laws when they downsized. We’ve been working on decluttering our home since we became empty nesters 3.5 years ago, in January we finally got to the point where I could start on all those photographs. I’ve designated a spare bedroom for this project and have organized 6 flat boxes with the names of our three kids and three nieces/nephew. Sorting pictures - one shoebox at a time has made it less overwhelming. My goal is to have everything sorted by Christmas, and your idea of creating a book is really exciting. I now plan to create six books, and include a page with our family history/genealogy as a Christmas gift.
Thanks so much for another inspiring video!

I think for me I finally got to all the physical ones. Kind of was one of the last major things. I have yet to tackle all the ones sort of lost in cyberspace from the time we started taking all our pics on our phones/devices until the current phone. 😅😅 (ugh. Tech is not my strong suit). I work on my current phone but Idk where to even start with “past devices” and I’ve had problems accessing at least one device.
I just have like one big pretty momento box where I have a couple of large stacks. (Along with other special things). Grabbed up a few albums at the thrift store and made a kind of “summary life collage highlights.” And that’s really all I kept. (Except for in digital land. Lol). It also made me feel proud that I could get something like that all organized and “pretty.” Like an art project or such. Lol.

A beautiful time consuming journey! Sorting, Gathering, Organizing n Scanning can b extremely overwhelming but well worth the effort! I would like 2 share something, tho. Unfortunately, Occasionally, Electronics can fail! I had years of "work" scanned on a 4T External. We have 5 children and I had lots of other family's photo memories in folders that had folders that had even MORE folders stored n organized! My 4T External was actually Less than 1 yr old n somehow it crashed! I had a person help retrieve as much of the files that he was able. However, most were lost! 😭😱
I advise that precious n important information b stored in Multiple places!!! On Multiples Externals! Downsizing extra n duplicate pics is understandable but Always keep those hard copies! U never know who might want them! 😉💞📸
    Thanks 4 sharing! I always enjoy U n Ur Mom's Decluttering journeys! 💞😘😘

Love your mum! I decluttered my photos years ago. I have about 6 or 7 of the 4x6 photo holders like your mum's black one (Mine are rainbow coloured) I got bored when sorting the photos and just ended up shoving them all in the containers... I should probably revisit that project one day. I had thought that it will be my niece's issue one day but that is mean haha (Most of the photos are of her and her brother growing up).

I also have a clear case the same size without dividers for each of my kids for school pictures and other larger size photos of them.. And I pretty much did it the same way-got rid of all the duplicates and LOTS of multiple pictures of the same event. And pitched all of the photo albums that took up an enormous amount of space. Kathy, great minds think alike! 🤪🤣

I'm sure you do this already, but I'd like to advise saving important things like digital/scanned photos and documents on at least one additional storage device. I use several usb sticks and ssds (redundancy is important and also replacing them after a few years) even though I - as a linux user - don't have to worry about viruses so much. But electronics can fail and I had some scares over the years, so I'm quite paranoid at this point 😅
I also have one usb stick with my most important data in a small bag with my ID etc., which is always right by my door so I could grab it in an emergency like a fire (knock on wood) and leave quickly.
