Speaking as a family historian/genealogist, I have a heartfelt plea: When you make up your memory book, have a page or two at the beginning for a family tree with names and dates, or at least a list of the people shown in the albums, with names and dates (birth, death, marriage, etc.). I've seen so many albums where the photos are just labeled "Grandma and Grandpa at the lake house" and the like. Whose grandma and grandpa? Where was the lake house? A better label would be "John and Jane Doe at their vacation home on the north shore Lake Naomi in the Poconos circa 1935" (with John and Jane's birth and death dates listed in the front of the book). Future generations will thank you! 😀

Our family has a wedding photo of my great grand parents(immigrated from Yugoslavia in 1867). It has their DOB, wedding date, and DOD for them, all of the children, grandchildren, and great-grands on the back. Someone passes or is born and we notify whoever has the picture hanging in their home so it can be written down.

Lol. IKR. Or take a pic or two in the first place. I’m trying to trace my ancestry stuff right now and some of it is like full on detective work. 😅😅 (I think I have the “right guy” for my maternal great grandfather but I’m still not quite sure if I’m correct. Lol). I guess times were harder back then and maybe they didn’t have time for all of that. (A lot of mine were farmers/rural also and not necessarily fully “educated” formally). It’s still fascinating to me tho. Lol.
Likely Bcuz his father died young. His mom remarried. And then you have all sorts of things going on like is it Johnny, John, Johnnie and the two last names plus did he even have a middle name? Lol. 🤯🤯 Well and then my grandma’s mom moved across town, left him (took the kids with) and married another and had other kids with the second hubs. The great grands Johnny was about the only “city slicker” I’ve found so far and even then his job was peddling produce in the city. Some of the others had trade type jobs as well. (Aka shoe repair, stove repair etc)

Oh I wish my mom and dad did this. My dad started to label some photos, but by time he did it for us, he couldn’t remember who the people were. I am now going through the photos and filling in some of the blanks but unfortunately, I don’t know every one. I have done this with my own important photos. Great tip, thank you for highlighting this.

You two make me laugh out loud. I have headphones on and my husband cracks up. He said are you watching the Mom and her daughter again? 😂 Kathy you helped inspire me to let my hair go gray. 🤗 We are the same age and I relate to so much of your decluttering. It does feel so good to let it go!!! I also have been slowly working on pictures and ancestry. Keep going ladies, you’re great together!!

I spent the pandemic going through about 3000 pictures. Got down to about 1000. Organized albums in order for my daughters.
Now, I will go back and sort again. I'm only keeping the most important. Some of my pictures go back to the 1860s! It was a hard task, though. Very emotional. Brought a few tears. Great job, Shannon and Mom. Congratulations!💞

Great job working on photographs! It is a monumental task. I like to have an envelope labeled "for others" to give any extras or photos that are meaningful to someone in the past. They are always delighted to get an old photo in the mail that they maybe have never seen before! It's actually a great gift to return a snapshot of history back to the rightful owner!

My clothes also change sizes in the closet and drawers 😂. I love that your husband was able to let go of the chest, tell him a stranger (Lol) said, "Great job!" I'll be 60 this year, and I'm attached to my pictures. I have way too many! My parents left their pictures to me, so I have a ton. It's going to be the last thing I declutter because the pictures are so sentimental. You and your mom make a great RUclips team and are getting so much done!

Great Video! I have been going through Family photos as well and there are quite a lot. I have most all of my grandparents pictures, my great grandparents pictures and even ones that belonged to my 2nd great grandparents, so there are pictures from the 2000's on back to the 1800's. I have gone through a lot and have given my Aunt's, Uncles and cousin's their childhood and school photos and things like that, but my grandparent's had duplicates of those. There were at least three copies of every photo from the 1940's to the 2000's, not to mention all of the Olan mill photo packages, where there were 24 copies of the same picture. I still have a lot of duplicates and bad photos to get rid of. I have put a hold on going through a lot of them. At the moment I have been organizing photos of me from childhood to high school and other memorabilia from that time to work on a scrapbook album for me. After that, I hope to do an album for my Dad and also add more to my Mom's (I found some more pictures to add). I also plan to do scrapbooks on my grandfather's side of the family as well as my grandmother's. Keep up the great work.

Great work, ladies! Kathy has come a long way on her decluttering journey and it seems like your Dad is finally on board, too, Shannon. Great progress. ♥ I do have to say, though, that when Kathy opened the cupboard at the end and said she's decluttered so much, there's hardly anything in there, I had to laugh. That cupboard was *filled* with dishes! I don't think you could fit another thing in there. I guess someone's 'hardly anything' is another person's 'too much'. heeheehee I don't say this to criticize; I know Kathy has let go of a ton of dishes. I just found it funny, since I personally have 3 dinner plates and 3 lunch plates, and 3 bread & butter plates. That's it! Of course, I live alone and never entertain, so that's a huge difference. Love you guys! ♥♥♥

I am more of a maximalist in many ways, but I too have been taking the Swedish Death cleaning approach to pare down. My biggest challenge that I have yet to deal with is also the family photos, so this episode was a great inspiration to me to persevere. Part of the roadblock for me is having to deal with all my mom's photo albums now that she is gone. My brother wanted me to keep all their travel albums which are mostly scenery or strangers. Once I scan the ones with mom and dad, I am boxing them all up and letting him deal with them LOL. After I scan the family photos I will keep a curated batch of physical photos in albums and then pass the rest on to my kids if they want them (which most of them do!). If electronics ever fail us, it will be nice to still have print copies to fall back on, IMHO. I am also disbursing all the old family photos that I have scanned back to my cousins on thumb drives to share with their branch of the family - I have over 40 cousins! That way the memories can be preserved and shared.

Here is a little tip on how to get rid of furniture depressions in carpet. A fork!! Get on your hands and knees, and using a fork from the kitchen, dig in! Moving it back and forth and every which way. It doesn't hurt the fork, just put it in the dishwasher. It pulls all the squished carpet back up. I swear by this :) It really doesn't take that long either.

    • @georgejustlucky
      @georgejustlucky 4 месяца назад

Ice cubes help too. The dampness as they melt raises the pile of the carpet. Of course, don't use too many and get things really damp.

If your mum wants to get rid of the grooves in the carpet left where the dresser was, she can put ice cubes in the grooves and leave them for a while and the carpet pile will just spring back up. It really works.

Great job on getting rid of that huge piece of furniture! I know it felt great! Several years ago we had our floors refinished and I had to move a giant oak computer cabinet to the garage. I did not want to put back in the room because it was so huge and heavy. I put it for free on Facebook marketplace and someone picked it up. They were happy and I was even more happy. Win, win! I completely understand the struggle of going through your photos. I retired six years ago, and at that time I pulled out all of my photos onto one table in my basement. Over the years I have moved the table numerous times. This is the year I am dealing with those photos! I’ve worked on them when I can this month and have made a dent, but have a long way to go. I know it will feel tremendous when this project is done! Thank you for your lovely video sharing that conquering photos truly is possible. You are my role model! Your modeling picture is beautiful! ❤

YAY! That big dresser gone! Here's a tip for Kathy: line the indented carpet with ice cubes, all along the smashed line. Once they melt you can fluff up the fibers with a tooth brush and the indent will be much less noticeable!

Ive decluttered my whole house, finally, now too. Only thing left is to go through all my photos on my computer and turn the ones I want into keepsake photo books. My mum gave me a photo album awhile ago of photos she organised of my grandparents, great grandparents and great, great grandparents and to it also a family tree from both sides of my family which was a wonderful gift. I loved seeing the old black and white photos and their clothes from another time. I have most of my photographs in about eight photo boxes. They're labeled by year. I did this about 10 to 15 years ago. But then I realized that I like to display Christmas photos at Christmas time, so I've pulled out a lot (but not all) of the Christmas photos and have them in one place. I also removed a lot of fall/Halloween pictures too so that I can display them seasonally. I'm doing this with Easter and 4th of July photos now too. Good job getting rid of the old wood dresser. That is GREAT that were able to get rid of that big dresser. The room must feel lighter and brighter. You can speed up those dented carpet marks by putting ice cubes on them....the rug fibers will pop back. I think you been told wrong about the folded clothes for donation. I knew someone that worked at GW. She said if the clothes all look just thrown in the bag they think it is from dirty/sloppy people that don't care and they throw the whole bag away rather than dealing with the "surprises" they may find....that they don't want to touch. Also, if the bags sit for a while the clothes get too wrinkled, look ugly and people don't want to buy...so throw them away and not waste their time. Yes, there are a lot of eBay sellers, but there are a lot of people that this is all they can afford and they want to buy with dignity. Kathy, as attractive as you are now...WOO HOO you were a movie star back in the day!!!!

I have been working on my photos since April of last year - when I had time. Sooooo many - threw away all scenery only pics and a ton of triplicate. Made my sister 2 albums with all of our parents, grandparents and some great grandparents along with history notes. I feel so much better! Gave the chest of 4 drawers housing some of the photos to a coworker. And have so much space where the 26 albums were.

The two of you are so incredibly fun and enjoyable to watch. You also help me with decluttering my stuff as well. I am slowly releasing more and more and it feels really good even though sometimes it’s hard. Thank you for continuing to turn out enjoyable and worthwhile content.

Shannon, it's amazing how much your mum has changed and accomplished over the past few years! 😁 Mines is still in the first phase... research and development 🙈😄 the stuff drives her nutz, but she struggles to part with anything and everything.

I love your "mom and me" videos! Your mom has done a fantastic job of decluttering. I was especially impressed with how much she has done with her photos. I am guilty of having many boxes of photos which really should be gone through, digitized, and organized. I like the idea of creating a photo album with the best of the best. I think photo projects are the most intimidating because there are so many of them!

Cngrats to your dad for catching the decluttering bug! I think photos are so sentimental and overwhelming to go through that they stay for the last project. That’s what I plan to do when I have more time in retirement. Amazing that your mom has reached the goal of photo organizing. 😊🎉💕

As a librarian who recently toured special collections keep your photographs just because you digitized them doesn't mean you will have them for the future. I just got rid of 4 pairs of pants that were pilled and holey, and 4 worn out socks.

You both are quite adorable! Kuddos to your teamwork. And, thank you for talking it out for us. It gives me more ideas, areas, and reasons to declutter. This round, I've only done my easiest stuff = most makeup and hair products now gone! So, I haven't truly pulled the trigger yet, but you ladies are just the ammunition I need to keep going. The lightness I feel after letting the stuff go and loving the "space" left behind is my guiding thought.

Thanks for showing more of the photo organization, it is also my last big area to declutter and organize. Please continue to revisit the photo organizing bc several people have told me they struggle with them as well. Especially those of us that have our parents, grandparents, our own, our children's and grandchildren's photos...

I did photos the first few weeks of 2024. Got rid of all the mismatched albums, bought some beautiful linen albums, and got rid of all the doubles and photos that I had no idea. The shelf is now organized and it’s easier to flip through. I use those furniture slides because I live alone and love to move things around 😉

Absolutely love the videos with mom! My mom passed 5 years ago and my dad told me recently that she had tons of pictures all over the house. He said he was separating them into 3 bins. I have 2 sisters. I told him don't make a bin for me, I don't want them! My sisters think I'm awful but I can't stand the clutter!

I’m not for digitizing photos, sorting, downsizing yes. My mom as she grew older and memory failing would look through albums of my kids and family photos. This helped her with happy memories…it’s hard to age…I will declutter some but not computerize. Eventually this method will also be obsolete.

Thank you again. I have been rewatching the decluttering with you and your mom. I am on my photos too. A little at a time. My mind has been less stressed each time I have down sized my stuff. I will be 52 and if something happens to me. My boys would bring me back to life and say deal with your stuff mom. I used to yell at my family about my stuff. But working on it now gives me the power. Now my boys might let me rest in peace. Lol. Got rid of all our cable crap. So much better. Big football games we get to go out to eat as a family. Everyone loves this much better. Again thank you guys for having fun but showing how to do it.
