i (an atheist) have this Mormon coworker who used to be a Missionary and he is really nice and doesn't push his beliefs onto others. He just quotes movies and makes puns as we work. He wanted to learn more about the LGBTQ+ so we talked about that too and he understood more about why his cousin felt the way that he does. After the talk he said that he was happy to learn about it from other people more than the internet, mostly because he understands it better when it is in real life. He is amazing

The level of cognitive dissonance it must take to claim you've been saved by grace, but then immediately turn on whoever you've branded a sinner with viciousness and hatred is utterly baffling to me. I believe, that my believes have to agree with reality. I used to be transfobic. Someone close to me showed some facts that were against my believes. I researched a little more and came to the conclusion that I was being an asshole for no reason. When people try to take their beliefs above reality, they have a lot of cognitive dissonance and problems with science, who affirms reality, and other people. Believing in a God is okay, believing that the earth is 4000-6000 years old is denying reality. I try to be more coherent with my believes, but everyone believes on one or two contradictory beliefs.

i've had a lot of religious people come through my old wendy's and i would always be the one to serve them (i look and sound like a really soft person so i would be tasked to do it) problem is i'm a raging trans homo and if you looked at me for longer than three seconds you would know, but i always distracted them by mentioning my struggle of the month. things like: "my mom's in the hospital with sepsis, i'm sorry if i seem negative!" or like "i just found out i might be evicted, i hope my overtime finally goes into my account!" and they'll be too distracted saying "i'll mention you to my prayer group, you're doing your best and we'll pray for you!" some of them even gave me money because they felt bad.
mfw i just wanted to ensure they were too distracted to realize my existence goes against half of their beliefs and i end up getting tips because of it

I'm calling bs on this. You sound like you're generalizing _all_ religious people, and also just assume that someone is religious. It just sounds like you're lying for tips not because you're "distracting them from the transness." In a drive-through, the only thing most people care about is the food and not hitting anything with their car. Unless you're in a super LGTBQ + phobic area, none of this happened. Also, just to be clear- I'm queer _and_ religious. I'm not being transphobic. That would be super hypocritical of me. BUT I think you're lying. Also, they put you at the window because you look and sound soft? I doubt any company does that. I've seen big dudes at windows. I'm not trying to be mean, but this sounds made up.

Oh! I didn’t know there was an ENTIRE SUBREDIT about my grandma and her insane cult religion!
Some “fun” stories about these nut jobs! (First 2 are from Maryland, the last 1 is from when I lived in PA.)
    1) I went to a service because there was a free lunch after for Pastor Appreciation Day. As we were doing morning worship, a little girl of one one of the singers started to choke on a piece of candy. Idk how they got it out or if it came out on it’s own, but she ran to her mother on stage, terrified and crying. The mother was the only one who stopped singing. She took her kid to the side and sat with her. AFTER the morning worship finished, she told the Pastor and worship leader what happened. Rather than make sure this little girl that was like 5 to 8 years old was ok, they told everyone to “raise your hands towards this Child of God so we may pray over her!” When she was feeling better, they started hooting and hollering about “praise Jesus!” Like no, praise whoever actually helped that poor child! They didn’t even let her go to another room to calm down, she just sat at the front row and looked miserable the entire service!
    2) the pastor was telling me how one winter- when he and his family lived further north and he was a new Christian living with his mom and sister- the heat broke on one of the coldest days. So he went out to his truck, LEFT HIS MOTHER AND SISTER IN THE FREEZING HOUSE, and just “prayed.” (I think he was making calls while sitting with the heat blasting, but he didn’t want his mother and sister to know that.) Then “suddenly” one of his friends who HAPPENED to have a pellet stove for sale, just felt the need to call him and ask how he was doing. So the pastor told him the issue and the guy came out and helped him hook the stove up. But he had no pellets until “suddenly” ANOTHER FRIENDS who just HAPPENED to sell wood pellets for stoves felt the need to call him and ask if he needed help with anything. Pastor told him what was going on and he got a crap ton of pellets and PRAISE GOD and blah blah blah.
    3) the pastor was telling a story about a friend who’s moth was almost completely deaf due to age. She went to every doctor and they all said they couldn’t do anything for her. So her son convinced her to go to church and let the pastor pray for healing over her. She did and had her hearing “restored.” So as they’re leaving, the son mentions how it’s so good she was healed. She says “yes, I hope it sticks” and just like that, because she “wavered in faith” her hearing was once again taken away. Like, woman has had her hopes built up and broke for so many years and God would do that to her just because she’s rightfully skeptical?
There was also the time my grandma’s current youth group pastor said that if you waver in faith, all things you’ve prayed for will be undone. And what is one of the things most people pray for? The healing, safety, recovery, and life of others. So he was basically saying “if you question God, he’ll make every person you’ve ever prayed for suffer and you don’t want that, do you?” My current church’s young adult ministry pastor (I only go to church to make grandma happy) also told us that “divorce is sin. Even if your spouse is beating the heck out of you, you’re saving them from Hell and bringing them closer to God just by staying with them!” He said this to a bunch of 20-29 year olds who are married and have kids and he DID use abuse as an example.

She was a type 1 diabetic (meaning her body didn't produce insulin so now she had to take the meds all of her life) and they had told her if she just prayed it away that she would be healed. Well she did and also stopped taking the medicine because she believed God would heal her. Family tried telling her to take her medicine but she refused vehemently saying that God would heal her. Well 3 weeks later she had passed due to going into diabetic keto acidosis. *All because people had lead her to believe that it would work if her faith was strong enough.* I understand not all Christians are like this but... it made me not want to be a part of that anymore... if anyone is different or a free thinker they look at you weird or don't have the answers. I grew uo in southern baptists churches. And I was ostracized, they wanna say I wasn't... but it was how I was treated. I tried following so hard and being so good yet the people there would ignore me the youth group would make fun of me and not include me... Jump into my car and I'll take you to safety!" The man replied with "I'm a devout Christan, God will save me." and the car drives away. The water raises higher and a ship floats by and the captain on the boat said to the man "What are you still doing here? Jump on the boat, you will drown otherwise!" "I pray to God everyday, I know He will save me" The house is later almost flooded over and a helicopter flies by and the pilot said "Has nobody come to rescue you? Grab this ladder and I'll help you" "I read my bible everyday, God will save me from this." The man drowns and goes to heaven. He goes to God and asks Him "I've been your loyal subject for years, I've prayed for you for years. Why didn't you save me?" God replies with "I sent the car, the ship and the helicopter but you sent them away!"

20:50 This was especially common even before the complete writing was finished. The book is comprised of 66 volumes, most notably several long-winded letters between disciplines and church leaders all over the region. There are also books of literary history (filled with random symbolic language and several alternate re-tellings) and collections of poetry. It has more than 40 authors that spanned over a period believed to be more than 1600 years long.
At first, the idea was for the book to be handled by a professional interpreter who could translate the manuscripts from their various native languages (Greek and Hebrew mostly, with some Latin) for an accurate understanding of the complex work.
This devolved into a kind of elitism that allowed the educated church leaders to claim their own interpretation of the book as gospel. This led to underhanded money practices and political and religious repression and corruption.

There have actually been studies that show that prayer works to improve outcomes in medical cases! Here’s the catch, though: *the person has to know they are being prayed to or it won’t work*. This suggests that something about having someone pray for you may psychologically help people in a way that can assist in healing (similar to a placebo). So even if you don’t believe, at least having a replacement for praying with someone may still be good for your health.

Also, some animals like ducks can become gay after copulation, which is both funny to think about but also show that yes, sexuality is partially genetic (about one third of it) and that it isn't 'just a choice.' if god made things _not_ to be queer, why did he make things partially genetically queer?

Bro I was raised Christian and spent all of my teenage years HATING religion because of how AWFUL and DISGUSTING it was. A god that made people who didn’t worship him with no way of knowing better suffer for eternity because he could, who committed mass genocide MULTIPLE TIMES, and encouraged persecution utterly disgusted me, especially as a fearfully closeted member of the LGBTQ community. It caused me severe trauma and anxiety, to the point I would have multiple panic attacks a day for years because I thought I was going to burn in hell. Because my own family told me I would burn in hell if I didn’t accept their beliefs. It was messed up, but they didn’t even know better and were doing it out of love and the desire to save me. I don’t resent them or think they’re bad people. And now I don’t resent religion. I consider myself an agnostic Christian (a Christian who is open to the possibility they could be wrong but still lives in that faith). What I HATE is organized religion. Whenever humanity gets together and even touches something with any semblance of power or decision of morality it all goes to hell. They will twist it and corrupt it, and take something personal and even good, and make it a display of how they’re chosen and enlightened, and a vessel for hate. They turn a belief and relationship into a showy feelsy cult. And it utterly disgusts me to my very core. The church is everything wrong with religion. People are everything wrong with religion. People who are either so entitled or looking so desperately for an escape they conform it to say what they want to say. The Bible says nothing about other people believing other things being persecuted, about heaven being gatekept (That’s the reason Jesus died for petes sake), about evolution not being compatible with creation, about cursing (it says not to curse your brother which means not to say hurtful things, not not to say arbitrary words that have been labeled bad BY PEOPLE), even the homophobia in the Bible is a translation error! And this is coming from someone who was indoctrinated and practically forced to memorize the Bible, to the point I won an award for knowing it in the SECOND GRADE. Heck I was baptized before I was old enough to think critically! And yet they have the nerve to say ATHEISTS are brainwashed. Utterly awful. They’re lucky their god is such a merciful god. Because heaven knows most of these “chosen” people don’t deserve to get into heaven. No one does, and the Bible says so.

Some of them are very nice people. Some of them are not very nice people (cough homophobic, racist and misogonystic).
I like what I call "God". I like what I call "the Universe". I like feeling like we are all connected. I like feeling like someone listens to me when I pray at night. Does that make it real? But I never felt like a liberal Christian. I saw the songs, prayers, praises to their God, as an obsession, not just believing. They sounded like if I convinced them hard enough, I could create a new religion with them. They seemed like they expected me to be the same.
    This stuff proves why.

Actually there used to be a huge issue with women drowning back in the old days while washing laundry at the river. If they fell in, the layers and layers of skirts they used to wear would get saturated in water and become too heavy, dragging the wearer down into the depths.

It is worth mentioning that not all things in evolution are advantageous. For example, having a wisdom teeth is not an advantage for us, but we still have them. Having an extra tendon in our wrists that does nothing is not an advantage, but some people still have them. Some things we have are advantageous, some are disadvantageous and some are neutral.

@@strayiggytv and to expand this further, there are traits that *were* advantageous in our history, but aren’t anymore, but due to how we built the world, most humans, regardless of their physical traits, get to love long enough to procreate, and that’s where evolution happens, as when a certain trait isn’t procreating, that trait disappears over time. And that’s why jokes about the “selfie arm” or arms getting shorter piss me off because there is no need to lose our arms, we live just fine with our long arms thanks to food abundance so no our arms won’t get shorter just because we’re on our phone all the time or whatever creationists say.
Also to further said point, homosexuality is a development by the brain, not directly by traits, that’s why heterosexual couples still produce queer kids, as brain wave don’t tend to fully line up with physical traits, that’s why trans people’s brains tend to act more like their preferred gender rather than their birth sex, as, and say it with me children, your brain doesn’t care about your genitalia, your brain and physical body are two separate entities that are just forced to work together to survive

They have gone on multiple vacations because “It looks like she’s dying soon”. And this coworker likes my dad, once his wife dies my father apparently gets a car. And on multiple occasions the coworker has said “If she dies before this trip I want you and your wife to have it” and when my father says I can’t do that, he pulls the my wife’d be dead so you can’t say no. Fun fact : 16:45, the evolutionnary benefit of homosexuality is a "fail-safe" for premature deaths of parents. Basically, if you have a small percentage of the population that cannot procreate (because ofc), they can adopt the offsrpings of deceised individuals. This is pretty much how it works it human society, gay couples adopt children, but it also exist in the animal reign. Some even believe that some species actually survived thanks to this particular trait : imagine there's a disease that mostly strikes one gender, and that the species affected by this disease requires both parents to be alive to raise the offspring, then you're left with a lot of babies that cannot be raised because only one parent remains. If however, there are gay couples, they can step in and raise the baby until the outbreak blows over. Same goes if one of the individuals is bysexual, and just mates with another individual of the same sex after the death of the first mating partner.
So yeah, there's actually an answer to this question
