Great job with the review, I’ve been playing Metal gear Survive since 2019 and role playing as Zero Risk Security officer, saving survivors, wearing ZRS riot armour on the extreme difficulty and I’m still discovering little secret spots in Afghan area, watching this review really boosts morale, so thanks for this honest review. “I'll be quick and I protect you by firm guard.”

This game is really fun!
It certainly is, on one of the occasions while in the I-pod screen, in the database, I’ve found a section called “Archive” which holds voice recordings of two CHARON CORE members. I believe you can receive them after every memory board you’ve collected. The recordings even foreshadows Seth and his involvement with the CHARON CORE. it’s fascinating how much effort to record the voice lines, yet in role playing perspective, it’s creepy, like I’m listening to the ghosts of these two CHARON CORE members, talking calmly and normally in the beginning of their recordings, only halfway through the recording’s, things gets chaotic, I even felt scared near the end when Enrique…well, listen if you want to? The recordings leave a couple of questions and what if’s. so this really boosts the desperation to live in Dite. P.S Thanks for the morale boost, I needed it, keep safe, and sorry for the long text, I hope its not too long?

I’m glad that we are finally getting some honest reviews for this game.
That was my main goal with this video! I felt like many big reviewers played the first few hours and said that was how the whole game was. Now that may have worked for another game but this game continually gives the player more and I saw how inaccurate these reviews were the more I played. I understand people may not like this game or Konami but dislike them accurately and not with false information

Apparently im supposed to hate this game according to the internet but ive been playing since release regularly with a group of players and still finding the core gameplay loop rewarding and addictive. With the daily and weekly rewards as well as the regular events that run i can see myself going back to it for a while.
This small spot on the Internet is saying it is ok to like it! Coop is a blast!

This review really put into perspective how many ideas central to Survive were also in Death Stranding. Building long-term structures, heavy emphasis on stamina, an encumbered weight system, resource collection and management. A lot of what is in both games are completely new to the MGS series, so maybe Survive is using ideas Kojima was already planning?
more than likely the writers for Survive and Kojima were all working on an idea before the split, and Survive is their perspective/side of the story while Death Stranding is Kojima's perspective. They def were one and the same at one time, but I don't believe it was a stolen/taken idea from Kojima.

I got this game a couple days back after reading all of the terrible reviews and I was ready to regret my $5 purchase.
I absolutely love the game. The key to enjoying it is to imagine it doesn't have the Metal Gear name, and think of it as its own separate game. Definitely not gonna stop playing it anytime soon.
The comment section here is full of stories like this! I am glad you’re enjoying it. I find it odd many look at this game as the next entry in the series rather than the spin off that it is.

There is no excuse for this. The game is hated, just for existing and its only fair.
It honestly doesnt matter if the game was good, which its debatable if it is, its just about what the game IS that makes it hated.
I see this from a perfect angle as I experienced a similar thing with a different title, just reversed, like you seem to be now.

I saw the gameplay and I just loved the idea of it, I got the game and I played it to no end and thought it was just fantastic as I love vehicle building games.
At the time I just thought the game is great but it gathered hate.
I remember watching JonTrons video on it. It felt weird with how upset he was with the game compared to how much I enjoyed it.
Now its clear to me. Just like previous Metal Gear Solid games, banjo kazooie and banjo tooie had a heart and soul and players loved it.
They fell in love with the gameplay, its characters and whatnot.
THAT is why people hated on Nuts & Bolts. It doesnt matter that the game might be good.
The game compared to the rest of its series is stripped of that heart and soul and its massive fanbase is left feeling wronged.
Metal Gear Survive isnt hated necessarily because its bad.
Its because it took what we love and ruined it for us.
If this was "The Mist: Survive" the reception could have been much warmer but this is a METAL GEAR title.
Its like there was Harry Potter: Nanomachine where he gets a mech suit and a railgun.
Does it sound cool? Maybe, but that would ruin the whole series. It just doesn't belong in it.
If I love pepperoni pizza and want pepperoni pizza, when I am instead given a pepperoni panini it doesnt matter if the panini tastes good, im disappointed.
Metal Gear Survive is the sad panini.
Ultimately encouring people to give the game a try despite all this is good, after all thats how I came to enjoy Nuts & Bolts.
The game, however, is a sin.
I'd like to finish this off by saying that Ive got Metal Gear Survive on launch and checking just now I have 45 hours clocked into it.
I got the game and it wasnt horrible, enough to the point where Ive got a respectable amount of time into it. Survival games are fun.
Despite this, I hate it for its sheer existence and I guess thats exactly the point im trying to make.
The problem is that people are blaming the game and the team who made it because they lack any real way to direct their anger to Konami, but that doesn't make it right at all. If Kojima had never been fired in such a controversial way this would never have happened. Another such spin off title 'Metal Gear Rising Revengeance' never got a similar fan treatment for not being a MGS game and was actually quite fun for pushing gameplay design in another direction.
It's also disgusting to attempt to justify this hate machine driven by fans essentially having their bottle taken away from them, it is never justified and I promise you Konami certainly doesn't care at all about what fans do to the last game that was likely in production long before any of the controversy happened, or the team who have to shoulder all of this hate and personal attacks that likely stemmed from it. This happens time and time again and regardless of the circumstances it is never ok in my eyes to dog pile a game to death especially when so many do it to draw ad revenue.
It's anything but fair. An entire team of people developed this game. People that have nothing to do with the Kojima/Konami melodrama
20 hours in and I really am enjoying myself so far with this game
Its rewarding and makes for a pretty well spent session after work
Co op can also be enjoyed because you still find one or 2 players for easy co op when you search at the right time (e.g. Not midnight in Europe)
Really looking forward to play it through and try myself with hard and extrem co op

i was debating on getting this mainly because of the hate i had been seeing about it for a long time, but i am only half way into this atm and based on your review so far the hate on the game seems a little unjust and is genuinely a pretty fun game, i may pick this up on xbox very soon

I finally gave this game a chance as I wanted to try earning the platinum trophy in every Metal Gear game. I was shocked by how much I actually enjoyed the game and disappointed that I bought into the hate train when it was first released.

Only 4 minutes in and already showing things I wanted while playing MGSV, food and water metres. I always wanted to play MGSV in free roam with no hud, no indicators, only NVG and appropriate camo with survival systems. (If there is a mod for it please tell me). Always loved the optional repeat missions of only using the world's gear and equipment's and start with nothing.
Might have to try this at some stage, again only 4 minutes in and already liking some of it.

Just arrived at what I'm guessing is the halfway point. I'm a sucker for the exploration aspect. Finding new recipes and locations feels really rewarding.

I know, I put around 200h in it by myself. I only wish there would be a bit more for the singleplayer part or different content in general (like locations/ maps). But it is a fun game.

They only put like 3 or 4 hours and they act like thats the entire game, even though it feels like that, there is more than just walking.

Excellent, I was searching for a positive outlook at this game so that I can make an assessment. All there were negative ones....may be due to the Kojima issue and also since it being a very niche game. Seems it is good for me then. I'll buy this the moment the price drops on a discount. Also, another plus for the game is that its getting weekly updates like mad. Like the MGS3 Themed Event with Shagahog. You can also turn off Virgil's Voice (was in an update previously). Future Updates will give us a chapter select for people that complained about missable trophy; and a Gender Change, making that 2nd character slot even more unappealing (Unless you want a Base for Farming Kuban and Manuals - Because Base Digging).

Food and Water wasn’t an issue for me on long treks onto the dust…it’s the fucking Sonic boom drain speed of the O2 tank.

Yea I totally understand people not liking this because of its niche nature or just hating on the publisher. But there was a lot of lies pushed about this game. If you dislike it, that’s fine, don’t be disingenuous about it. Personally I found it to be a surprise in that it is actually very fun
Got the game last week and I’ve been playing at least 2 hrs a day, I’m at the point where I just rescued Chris , main thing I wish was different was the multiplayer, the coop mission are alright but I wish me n my friend could venture into the world together it’s still a really fun game tho

This may be my favorite metal gear spin off. I put 66 hours into it and my only big negative is the matchmaking is trash. SOlid game otherwise.

The base building and survival mechanics are in depth and hard core. Not for casuals or impatient gamers.
Konami has effectively killed Survive by making it require an Internet connection so it can't be played offline.
Cheating? What a cheap excuse.
How are coop missions solo? Also are you still playing?
You can play coop missions with up to 3 other people in your party. If, however, you don't want to wait for four players you can set the match to private. If the match is set to private you can choose to invite up to three friends or just start on your own.

Thanks for your alternative take. I'm still convinced that I won't try it any time soon as games with always online, MTX for character slots (what is the difference between this and a save?) and timers which encourage me to not play actively annoy me.
You do have a point that much of the coverage seems to have exaggerated things, perhaps as they didn't finish the game and get to Africa but combat mechanics themselves don't seem too good even if I think some of those monsters have neat designs. It still looks like shooting/spearing from a distance with a fence is a strong option, perhaps not for most of the Africa section.
I did think about some comparisons which can be drawn with renowned games like MGS3. Ones which I consider the best l like the Boktai series which does have a timer on growing fruit (the real time clock I suppose too), honestly I'd probably dislike that too if it was charging me real money to speed up progress and was always online.
It isn't really that I'm so weak that I'd fall victim to MTXs as much as I can see ripples of F2P design across games when just microtransactions are in and I like complete games which don't depend on hackers to make them last.
The Survival elements in this game seem to be fine on paper, I think they should have found a silent way to indicate low oxygen though and made that the default. It could be tied to the UI, animations of your character, enemies in the environment, character model details or something.

Character slot vs save slot.
When you start a game you select a character from a character slot and that character slot has many save slots. Saying that the game limits your saves is not really true. It asks you to earn coins or buy them with real world money to start a new character slot. Does that make sense?
It goes beyond people who can't resist them in the current climate especially towards AAA brands (I know this isn't $60 now and didn't launch at that price).
Case in point, the distinction between paying a save with the option to play to earn it or paying for a character slot which has many saves with the same play options isn't a big one.
The price tag or quantity tends to be forgotten and I relate to that despite enjoying your insights. Of course, it would be better to be more honest and accurate rather than dozens of inaccurate (or at the least misleading) articles and videos.
People have less patience for this after Kojima left and Battlefront 2 so hopefully games will adapt their models so people will be able to focus on the games proper again.
And it looks like companies are backing off on the loot boxes too
Indeed, that's step one (fortunately one that Konami doesn't need to make with their games) but a big one.
DOA5 may be sleezy in more ways than one but I suppose the content isn't random as much as I'd rather we don't praise that.
Im going to end up playing it sooner or later but I think my issue with this game is how it doesn't seem like a metal gear game. It came out so quick and didnt really change any textures or animations. This game would sit well with me if they made it as a new IP and didnt just water the stealth aspect and make it a base defender. Again, this is my outside looking in perspective but often times a trailer or review or gameplay from an influencer is the driving force between buying it or not.
I enjoyed the game overall. It was a nice little love letter to Konami and Fox Engine
Been playing Metal Gear since the NES / MSX versions and frankly didn't have any expectations since Kojima had exited the series. I've been playing close to 100 hours now and am at the final battle finally (i move pretty slow lol) but have been pleasantly surprised by how fun and sometimes risky the exploration is. It doesn't really have the Kojima-style flair the series is famous for and its a little eye-rolling when they try at times but I don't hold it against the devs trying to live up to a legendary reputation so no biggie. I never jumped on the Konami hate bandwagon because their gaming legacy is part and parcel of what makes gaming so great, from the glory arcade days to so many wonderful games for consoles as well. Give this one a shot if you're on the fence.

For japan, the players are split between 2 areas; 1 that loves story (Most likely not to stay) and 1 that loves the gameplay. That simple really.

I can see that. Metal Gear's story is pretty ridiculous (but entertaining as heck) so having a zombieland version all of a sudden doesn't really bother me as I don't count it as canon anyways. The gameplay has always been innovative if not always well executed (MGS 2 controls, yikes!). Konami as a company has a vast and wonderful history of fantastic games as far back as Scramble, Gradius & Contra in the arcades and of course Castlevania series among many others. Konami never was just Kojima and Metal Gear so thats a reason I decided to give Survive a decent go.
The Metal Gear in the title killed this great survival game.

i must admit, i was really sceptical to this game at first. but i sayd feck it and bought it either way. and DAMN am i glad i did! :D i have yet to find an online match ever, but the single player part is just SOOO friggin good and well put together that i can manage just fine. ;) the only downside about not haveing found a single Online Co-op match is that i am limited to the SP schematics and items. :( wich is really annoying, but heck, my Character is so friggin OP that to be blunt, the gold gear would turn me into the Metal gear version of the Hulk. wich i now have dubbed Mist Hulk, King of the Fog! :D
anyway, really glad to see a review of this amazing game from someone who actually went past the main menu, grew some balls and pressed play.
almost 99% of the Steam reviews of this game says either *DON'T BUY!* or *F**#CK** you konami!* i feel bad for these lost souls that did not have the balls to press play. or rather brains. because let's be serious, if you claim to be a veteran fan of the MG franchise and say that this game breaks from the originals then you are a sad and blind little man with no capability to remember that in fact the game that litteraly broke from the originals was MGS 2. why you might ask? because console and graphics development and changes. don't come here and tell me that graphically changing a game to look different from the first game is not different and thus counts as breaking from the originals. wich in this case is *original* since the first game in a series will allways be the *original* one.

got this a short while back and its nice to see someone review more than just starting content. biggest issue i think i saw was the original price point of $30, which isnt even bad, but just felt full of not super-duper engaging content. took it calmer, and that set people off. i am more than satisfied with my like $6 purchase and i think if the price was knocked down 10 bucks at release it mightve had more... reasonable expectations. great video!

I picked this one up at a garage sale for 1$ a few weels ago and have yet to play it. Came here seeing if it'll be worth the play and it seems so.
I have come to realize if the games title has metal gear in it, there will be some form of fun to be had there even found out revengence is good after finally giving it a proper chance

Tried it myself...and it's the best survival game on the market it's a AAA survival game with post content that rewards you for playing it and has a decent story
Me and my best friend are die hard metal gear fans, and since no other metal gear game has any co op at all this games wave mode co op was a blessing for us, a tense final wave with bosses swarming us while are defences are on there last leg, that majestic music after finishing a mission wrapped up with the handshake emote snake and otacon do in mgs2 is magical for me, and for that I’ll stay loyal to this game no matter what the reviews say

I absolutly love this game, i'm glad that you showed how good the game can be i don't like that people are like "This game sucks" It doesen't suck. Yes it can be annoying but fun nonetheless i love this game ty for telling people that this game can be good and is not a complete dumpster fire.
Much of that early criticism was very weak! It was a lot of easy stuff framed in a way to ignore the load of good stuff
I loved Survive. Plunged 100s of hours into it and definitely got more than £13 worth of. entertainment. One thing that annoys me about it (and all other games) is the whole silent protagonist thing. Just so jarring.

Picked up Metal Gear Survive at Toysrus for %70 off. Someone wrote on the price tag “DO NOT BUY THIS GAME” So I bought it haha I’ve been playing in the Africa section for a few hours now. I really enjoy this game. I figured it would have been a game that I would play for a few hours and forget about, but no. It’s a lot of fun

After actually playing this game for myself and enjoying it, I've come up with this. This game may of been a cash grab by konami, but I feel like the developers who worked on this game put in a lot of passion and hard work.

Havent watched the whole video yet. Just the intro to where he says that he enjoys the game. From what i understand this game is not hated because of it being bad. It is hated because of the konami vs kojima issue and the fact that this game should not have the metal gear name. In fact if it was just called "Survive" and lacked the metal gear connection this game would have been met with more acceptance. In fact i was interested in buying this game but didn't on the principle of this isnt a metal gear game.
To recap this works as a game. However, it isnt a "Metal Gear" game and since it has that name and connection, this game is hated by metal gear fans and a great deal of the gaming public.
Also Konami why the hell are/were you charging $10 for an extra save slot. Not sure if they are still doing that, but it stood out as a problem.
I actually like this game overall. My biggest complaint is, honestly, that the good ending is all your characters stuck in this post-apocalyptic world, theoretically, forever. I wish there was a 'final mission' where you hold off hordes of enemies while everyone, including my animals, evacuated through a portal safely into the past. The captain being the last one through, then it closes, and you see adult Goodluck waiting for you.

I can only play mgsv so many times. And while the story tanked and this isn't a metal gear game, it is fox engine and mgsv controls like a dream. Everything is so satisfying to do. Thinking more and more about taking this for a spin my reservations aside
You could take even the most rotten pile of shit (not saying survive is shit) and give it mgsv controls and I would play the hell out of it

Such a good game, a damn shame it got crucified for having the metal gear license. I remember thoroughly enjoying the story mode, played the alpha and beta with some friends, great times.
I might have to finally bury my prejudice and give it a try, only 8 bucks on humble rn so not too big a loss if it's not my thing

So far I'm having fun, not goty material but it totally could have done better if they took it out of the mg universe. It's almost like monster hunter, creating a feedback loop that keeps you investing time into it.

I honestly feel like its a decent game but they shouldnt have put metal gear on it. Has nothing really military or stealthy. And i don't want to give money to konami

Survive is way more polished and way more complete than TPP is and I don't see half the amount of shit given to TPP than people give to survive. And don't even get me started on Death Stranding
Games needs to be seen as games alone, for their content, not by who made this.
To be perfectly fair if any game by any company asks me to pay for additional save slots I'll break the disc in half out of spite, regardless of how good or bad it is.
I swear people will bash about anything good if it’s popular enough. Thank you for giving an honest review of this game. I recently got it myself and as a hardcore MGS fan, it’s not too bad! It definitely doesn’t really have anything to do with the MGS universe or being cannon. But I like the change of pace, and I also tried out MGS: Rising and LOVE IT. I still say they made this game to spite hideo but it’s like they mixed mgs with a bit of darkest dungeon and I like those games so I may pick it up at gstop or rent it

KritikalMass awesome to hear, I’m seriously considering getting it since I’m almost done with the entire MGS series and I need something to quench my thirst. I’m even playing the game boy color game right now, fortunately I still have a few games to play. (MSX games, MGS4, &the rest of TPP)

Update it was the lord of dust.....this game shouldve just been called survive and left off the mgs part if they did that wed have an actual title here that the public may have been into.

About the Character Slots, I understand the backlash but I also understand why the Devs went for it too, the thing is that all the save slots have shared resources so you have more bases to build and all the resources are shared kinda like MGSV:TPP FOBs where you have to pay for more bases and more resources and you can recruit more men to be more powerful, so they didn't lie when they said the microtransaction in Survive are somehow just like MGSV:TPP (and MGO as you pay too for Character Slots), the catch here is that in Survive you can just IGNORE it, as it's not a competitive multiplayer people won't invade you, and "you can get the two endings without another save needed", and if you delete your save & want to start again "you won't lose any resources that you grinded for in the last save, everything will stay in your storage" but in MGSV:TPP you have to get the extra FOBs for more resources and men so you can defend your base properly from other players and be one of the best between them if you care that much, or you need to buy the insurance microtransactions to feel safe, so you have to pay either way, and they compromise with login bonuses 2 or 3 times a week if people want to grind for them and that happens in Survive too but you could have got the bonuses everyday until recently where they limited it to 3 times a week so you can get an extra save slot if you care that much and by now most people got more than they needed for it even though it's really not needed, another thing is the fact that you can exchange battle points in Event they do every time with those premium coins which nobody talks about apparently and those things are far better than things that worked in MGSV:TPP and MGO.
The point is: if Survive now deserves a backlash from the fans for its Microtransactions (even though somehow it's better than its predecessor about it) then MGSV:TPP deserves the same backlash or most of the fans in my eyes now will be just a bunch of Hypocrites. I was one of the people who said back then no! it's not right to buy a game at full price and then spend like 35$ more just to make sure that my base is a little bit safer and powerful, and if I want to play it more safe, I need to pay more for the insurance crap, no we need to be on equal terms in competitive games and let's not forget about "pay to speed up developement"... but nobody cared that much except few. So pretty much biased and hypocrites for me.
This is only about people who tried to find a reason to hate the game and settled on Character Slots & Microtransactions. As you said other group are hating the game only because Kojima didn't touch it even though he made himself look like a hypocrite about this game but that's another story.

Thanks, for me personally, I enjoyed the game at first it was harsh and hardcore on survival and grinding, the only that was meh is the game babysits you in the 5 first chapters and do so afterwards casually. More indoors sneaking than MGSV:TPP which is great, base management & customization is really good than anticipated, characters interactions needed more work but hey far better than TPP at least you see all characters do things and interact, the fact that you can get lost if you're not carefull was one of the best things, punishing, gives you this sense of urgency, everything is limited as it should be (well until a little bit later), and a plus for the devs as they listen to every real (not hateful for no reason) feedback: more modes, more difficulties, changing controls, no AI voice, events, tweaks and balances every week, I've heard chapter selection and gender change are coming in the future (SJW agenda confirmed lol) a really good thing by the devs not like how they handled TPP they reach and hear the fans more now, but after some time it get's really repetitive and it was ok in the campaign but after the story & after the 2 optional bosses and exploring most of the map, I stopped and I won't go back to it except if there is new content or if they make co-op for the story, co-op modes right now get repetitive after you experience all the maps, base digging in the campaign too, it didn't give me a reason to reach lvl cap (I wish they could make Area Loot available before the end game it could have been more helpful), it didn't give me reason to grind for better gear in the end... but for a 40$ game it was OK. I'll give it 6.5~7 at best.
Yeah totally agree, but why only some games get the hammer and others that have shitier practices don't ? like MGSV that has a competitive mode to begin with.
I'm really afraid of getting this game cuz it looks less metal gear game, but after i heard some peoples saw some good points, maybe i will have second thought...someday.
