Metal Gear Survive | Zombie Slam Poetry | Featuring @Tetramorre | 2021 Review

  • Metal Gear Survive was the Konami project released after the departure of Hideo Kojima, who went off to make Death Stranding. Survive draws a lot from Metal Gear Solid V, which is only natural as that game is pretty good. Thanks to Tetramorre for the assist on this one.

I played Death Stranding a few months ago and the parallels to Survive are just fucking insane. Even down to miniscule shit like a mysterious, official-looking black guy with a weird name giving you orders (die-hardman and goodluck), or the focus on corpses and crystals. Personally, my guess is that Death Stranding is the game Kojima wanted to make for a while, and when Konami shitcanned him, he took the opportunity to make it for real.

    • @ikeaira8701

Konami "Shitcanned" Kojima because he was wasting Time & Money on stuff he shouldn't of been doing. Like, P.T. that he did under Konami's nose when he was supposed to be working on MGSV. Ya'know the game that was suppose to make them back all the money that Kojima wasted(literally pushing Konami into the "red")? The Game that's completely unfinished? Yeah that game, and eventually it did make the money lost back, but only a year after it's release. So please, praise Kojima some more when in reality he was just as much in the wrong; if not more, as Konami. I would of fired him too if I was his boss. That's not even going into the huge ego he had, and the fanbase influencing that.

The weirdest part of Survive is the people that worked on it, you have Masahiro Ito doing monster designs and the director of the game was the coding or gameplay director of MGS4. You mentioned the detection ring, and that was from 4 to assist with detecting where enemies were based on noise (given half the game is an active warzone) so I wonder if it was his idea and he carried it into Survive or what.

I was more upset over the overall tyranny going on (and is still going on) in Konami offices. They have cameras everywhere poised on their staff, the staff are expected to work overtime without pay, their toilet and food breaks are heavily regulated and their contracts are outright atrocious.
What this entire circus told me was that on principle, I shouldn't buy any product from Konami. Kochima is just a side issue to me, something that underlines just how predatory the influential and the CEOs in Japan can be (a very prevalent issue btw). I prefer to focus on how they treat their general staff and it is... just downright awful.
That is why I dislike Konami, because they, as a company, deserve as much criticism as is thrown at them, in fact, they could do with more (so long as the general staff isn't the target).
The fact they are still standing and profiting with such awful setup for their staff is downright awful.

Part of that tough work ethic is what made Japan such an impressive country when it comes to industry and innovation. I think the US could learn a few things from them. That being said, workers shouldn't be treated like cattle unless they work in fast food.

    • @SecuR0M
      @SecuR0M Год назад

Hi welcome to Japanese workplaces. Every office in Japan is as bad, or worse, as Konami lol. It's a big reason why Japan has no births or economic future.

    • @SecuR0M
      @SecuR0M Год назад

@@jmarra07 "Tough work ethic" is just trading long term growth for short term pleasure. It's a suicide pact in practice lol. Have you seen Japan's birthrates or debt to GDP ratio? Thanks LDP.
White collar workers are the only ones who should be treated like that though. The more expensive the worker, the more need to make sure they aren't malingering or shirking work, duh. Fast food workers aren't worth the investment just hire another high schooler lol. No one actually cares if their burger is a minute or two late because it's a low cost item. A missed burger sale is literally nothing for McDonald's but a missed hour or two of coding productivity by Microsoft is potentially lethal down the road, just look at Windows ME's disastrous launch because of how lazy office workers fucked around instead of knuckling down.
Anyway it's why those oppressive surveillance cameras only exist for salarymen in Japan. They realize, as anyone who studies worker productivity and management theory for more than an hour does, that office workers are much lazier and morally weaker than fast food (or any food) workers. It's sad that office workers are so pathetic they need that extrinsic motivation though, they're basically animals in their ability to control their work ethic. The less a chance they have to reproduce the better society is though, which is why they have forced overtime and timed bathroom breaks. No time for salaryman to have kids means less chance for Japanese culture to go to the dogs.
Street food workers in Japan do that naturally by waking up at 3 AM to go to market to buy food for shift, which starts at 5 AM and ends at 8 PM, for their 15 hours a day 7 days a week sigma grindset. It's because of that that farmers, welders, and food workers will eventually inherit the Japanese soil and (literally) rebirth the nation, because they have kids who learn the family trade.

Konami is a legitimately bad company, but I despise how people want to ignore their actual tangible evil they do to employees, only to focus on whining about pachinko machines and saying Death Stranding Beta Version here is anything worse than mediocre.

    • @Simon-xi7lb
      @Simon-xi7lb Год назад +3

@@trustytrest Exactly. For people when it comes to Konami, it's either you're on the company's side or you're on Kojima's side. I personally couldn't care less about Kojima, but what Konami did to his team is only a tiny, highly-publicized part of a pattern of reprehensible behavior on the part of the company.
They are the picture of capitalist greed. Just look at what's happening recently - they've come back to publish more Silent Hill games, milking that dead IP for all it's worth now that the Japanese government is cracking down on Pachinko parlors. And everyone's all happy and excited, forgetting everything they did to Team Silent and the Silent Hill IP after SH3?
The general public should be ashamed of themselves for so readily supporting a company with a history of employee rights abuses as long as Konami's. Developers deserve better than to have their suffering brushed under the rug and forgotten at the first chance for some shiny, vapid new toy.

Replacing Big bosses voice actor was going to make people pay a lot more attention to anything snake says just by the virtue of not being used to it and so hearing the same voice come from a completely random other character is kind of a dead giveaway. Altho then again i recall a lot of people going with the "nah man thats way too obvious for Kojima" line of thought so maybe it was all a big 5D chees play

The latter didn't really like how Kojima was given so much leeway or his rockstar attitude and lack of deference to his superiors in the company.
On top of that there was a lot of flak being thrown at Kojima (as head of Konami Digital Entertainment) within Konami Holdings because he'd basically ignored the rise of the extremely profitable mobile market.

I really hope you read this, it’s one of the cooler facts I know about Kojima and his mentality about his development mindset that a lot of people overlook:
You mention early on how not many people know Developers by name. Kojima recognized this. Except he recognized it back in the 80s.
It’s why he put his name on so much stuff. It’s why he is so unabashedly in your face about his own personal marketing strategies. Because he came from an industry that would forget those who made it, and credit the publishing house and not the game developer. “You wouldn’t do it with the author of a book so why would he not?”
    That.
So the very fact we know who he is, proves he was right all along.
The only other prominent developers I know? Yoshi P, Uematsu, Soken ( ff game music for both of them) Sakurai, Miyamoto, and Miyazaki.
That’s about it. And all of them do the same thing Kojima does to an extent.
So the next time Darksyde Phil rages at Kojima it’s always fun to remember that the very fact he knows Kojima’s name gives him the winning hand.
It’s awesome. I love it. I love it so much. He will be remembered. A legacy. And that’s awesome. I wish I would be remembered…

I admire the franchise but I wonder the same. How can everyone asume that everything is his idea. Even in the first metal gear solid, the idea were not new, the foundation was in movies and it was plainly obvious. Kojima just put it together. I'll admite that the experience was deeper and more complex than any other similar game but there was an entire team behind.
I always feel uncomfortable with that situation.

I've played Survive for 590 hours. I paid $5 for it. The endgame is great and really deserves more attention.
Like at 17:50 when you're talking about how annoying it is to individually extract a few hundred kuban each from the zombie corpses-- the game makes that so tedious and unrewarding as a way of spurring you to not do it. You're supposed to learn to get most of your kuban energy from multiplayer, from the salvage missions. You get tens of thousands of kuban for doing a mission on easy, and on extreme you'll be getting millions of kuban just for one S+ rank.
Survive was originally conceived as basically the Metal Gear equivalent to Call of Duty's zombie mode--a mode intended for multiple players, not solo outings (except for the most hardcore). All this material is great criticism of the single player portion of the game, but if you consider that the single player was never intended to be part of the final product, and was made and added on in the tail end of the entire game's conception and production, I think a lot of things get put in a more understandable context.
I also have to say at 19:30 the Exploration Teams have a really important use in the endgame which you seemed to overlook: like the rare Styptic powder, Titanium Alloy is also very hard to find in Survive's single player mode. Well, again, you're not meant to farm it that way. You can send your Exploration team off on missions near the end game to get huge amounts of these rare resources (there is a daily rotation for different material types), and it's only by using this team that I was able to keep enough Titanium in my inventory at all to use the highest level weapons and gear the game has to offer. Doing salvages gives you a supply of a little bit of almost every material in the game, so whatever you're getting from that is meant to be supplemented by your Exploration Teams. It's not useful at first because you don't have enough food and supplies to send a team out on the harder missions to gather these larger bounties of materials.
Kind of wish you had mentioned that the game gives the player free SV coins for logging on during the weekends. V uses MB coins almost exactly like Survive uses SV coins. The extra resource gathering in both games is unlocked thru these currencies. An extra character is an extra base. I hear you when you're accusing the Survive Defenders of being victim of the sunk cost fallacy, but consider that maybe I've played almost 600 hours of this game because I simply enjoy beating zombies over their collective heads with a Jet Axe from Metal Gear Revengeance while wearing the Sneaking Suit from V, and that playing with up to 3 friends doing this is pretty good as far as "hamster wheels" go. I put in an extra $5 after I bought the game to afford an extra character slot and an extra loadout slot, and since then I've earned enough simply from logging in to buy a 3rd character slot. You don't actually have to pay to earn SV coins.
36 hours in Survive isn't even enough to get into the endgame loop. Did you play an Extreme salvage mission? You probably haven't seen all the game has to offer until you've felt the pressure of 10 lanes of wanderers, bombers, XOF gunners, trackers, a devastator, and Frostbite all bearing down on you and your team at once. This game was made with the multiplayer aspect primarily in mind, and the single player was added on in a rather short time span before its release. The single player campaign literally must be "survived" and, yes, it's a slog, it's hard, but it gets easier the entire way, and you don't really start to see the full game until you hit the endgame. You have 40 levels to gain in the main class, and 4 more subclasses of 29 levels each to earn and experience. (For reference it took me over 300 hours to max out all the subclasses.) You mentioned a few times in the video how few people made it thru the story--even fewer have made it to where the game we were intended to play really lies. You can like it or not, but it was damn fun for me to fight me way to my own slice of Heaven with Survive.
Anyways, I know this is a long comment and I'm pretty critical, but I like this game and I've seen a lot of inaccurate information going around about it for a while now, so I just wanted to throw in how I see things since I didn't see much of my perspective in your video.

I didn't think MGS5's story was great, but I have no idea how much of the blame lies with Kojima and how much lies with Konami - it's surely some kind of split. However, coming up on almost a decade since it's release, I *still* think it is the best sandbox stealth 'em up (or shoot 'em up if that's how you prefer to roll) on the market. The variety of things you could do, the number of "oh, there's no way this is gon-- holy fuck, it actually worked!" moments - it was great. 2015 was a beautiful year for games: MGS5, SOMA, and Bloodborne; that's a blessed year.

You are wrong about the "violates the basics of good UI design". Having the UI in the center is better becasue that's where the action is happening.
So you can both focus on the gameplay and see the needed information at the same time.
It might not matter much for this game, but for competetive games or MMO raids where there's a lot to track it can make all the difference.
So it's not that this game has bad UI. It's that he UI doesn't do much for this game.

    Honestly...
I really enjoyed Survive. It's corny, sure, its a janky game, and the story is dumb.
But... it was fun, and as for it being corny and having a dumb story, I mean, have you /played/ a Metal Gear game before? MGS2 is one of my favorite games of all time, I love these games, but they are fucking ridiculous, even within the confines of their own series.
Death Stranding was one of the most memorable games I've played in 2021 so far, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but that game is fucking DUMB.
I dunno, like, I absolutely give individuals precedent over corporations, and even in the realm of big media corporations Konami is pretty despicable, but at the same time it feels like people didn't /really/ give this game a fair shake, and just painted over it with a boiler-plate 'konami bad kojima good kojima not involved survive bad'.
Don't get me wrong, the game has flaws. Many, many flaws, but if you were to try to earnestly get critique from fans of the series, 85% of people would call it a 'fence spear sim', and the remainder... probably didn't play it at all, honestly.
I really feel like they should've called this something else. Separate from the label of 'metal gear' and Konami's controversy at the time, and certainly a bit more development time to ensuring the matchmaking actually /worked/ (especially because, as many others have already stated, the endgame multiplayer stuff is the most fun), and I think it could've been a pretty unanimously good time.
It's kind of an inside joke in my friend group to rib me over enjoying Survive, and that kinda sucks, because even WITHOUT modifying anything about the game itself; its janky melee, its janky online, 'generic' at best zombie types... purely just changing public perception over it, and it would be the EXACT sort of game we would all play obsessively after work for a good few weeks.
I would say that I would honestly prefer picking up a copy (on, like, Kinguin or something, because keys are under $20 at worst and you don't have to give money to Konami), but at this point the best part of the game is impossible to actually enjoy unless you have premade groups, so... don't? Man speaks the truth early on in the video, just get something like Valheim instead, but... man, I did enjoy it while it lasted.
