      It absolutely is unfinished, even if you don't count mission 51 (which, oh wait, i do, because there it is), to the point that they never really figured out how to implement key story elements and cutscenes and they just shoehorned them in amongst repetitions of the SAME missions from chapter 1 (not even "retreads" because they are the exact same missions, cutscenes and all), and robbed the ending of any potential punch it might have had because (unlike all other cutscenes which had context and their impact was noticed) the ending just...happened. Think about just HOW strong it would have been presenting the battle against Liquid, Quiet's departure, the Paz ending and the big reveal as a proper sequence of events!!
      Don't get me wrong, even in its state, it is a MASTERPIECE of a game, and i am absolutely grateful for it...just don't tell me it's finished. Konami thought they played us like a GODDAMN FIDDLE....but they didn't.

    • @midshipman8654

      Hamzah Saddiq I think the base gameplay design is completely serviceable, if not the most inspired design. But again it doesn’t have to be, it’s a third person shooter. What I like most about it is the interconnected systems that allow it to be kind of a sandbox. Lure an enemy with a decoy, place a c4 charge next to it, blow it up and draw all the guards to the location, that kind of stuff. Gameplay wise I think the biggest problem is the macro level design. Areas are to far apart from each other with little purpose for the 5-10 minutes of traveling between them. Also this is a personal gripe, but in all metal gear games I don’t like killing people since it’s a recorded stat and I feel bad, but on the other hand the most fun parts of the game often include killing. Kinda wish there was a firefight/horde mode so I could just go all out Rambo instead of just sneaking every mission.

      Infamous 2 did it better. Drop down off the boat with the camera facing down, look up, then turn left because that's where the action is. Rather than putting the camera at a central point and asking you to look away, it's putting the camera in a logical place and then asking you to move it to where it needs to be. So many people don't even realize that's what is happening, they just think it's making you turn toward the action.

    • @kingnro1
      @kingnro1 5 лет назад +83

      It's sad how much of this game's narrative and thematic content flies over the heads of so many. Ocelot is the way he is because this is what he needs to be for this mission. Chapter 2 is so aimless because it's designed to represent the emotional emptiness of revenge. The reason why the truth mission is number 46 is because that's the only chapter of Moby Dick not narrated by Ishmael. Venom is an amalgamation of the personalities of the player and of Big Boss; when he's speaking, he's BB, when he's silent he's the player. Diamond Dogs are not heroes, they're a cult. Etc. Etc.
      Kojima finally does something that everyone has been asking for years: he's actually subtle with his story...and then everyone thrashes him for not having enough cutscenes like in the previous games \_('-')_/

    • @user-xe5pe9yg2e
      @user-xe5pe9yg2e 5 лет назад +15

      @@kingnro1 Chapter 2 feels so aimless not because of some thematic message, but because it doesn't have Mission 51 to serve as the pay-off for all the nonsense it built up. Chapter 2 builds up said nonsense to keep the player engaged while it picks up up pieces and clarifies any confusion caused by Chapter 1. Chapter 1 leaves the player in a daze because it was poorly paced and should have established most of the stuff told in cassette tapes, from both Chapters 1 & 2, during the main campaign.

    • @Gil3ification
      @Gil3ification 5 лет назад +5

      @@user-xe5pe9yg2e Honestly, I think it could very well be a game that's completed but feels like it isn't, and all for a thematic purpose. Look at the beginning of Raiden's Big Shell mission in 2. It was tedious to no end with codec call after codec call hampering your progress. And that is pretty much believed to be Kojima being meta and showing the player what the sequel could have looked like by copying the previous game, and doing it in a way that it is more annoying than that game, something you could read as a statement on high expectations. So Kojima absolutely could murder player enjoyment for a theme. I 100% believe he would, and probably did. Is he the only reason for the game being in the state it is? No. Konami definitely had a hand in the mix, but Kojima was the biggest problem.

      @@kingnro1 You're giving Kojima way too much credit. Ocelot is the way he is, because Kojima's writing has gone downhill since MGS4. Miller is literally the only character in MGS5. He's the only character in the entire game with an actual personality. Because Kojima has been sick of writing making Metal Gear since the early 2000's. For years he's wanted to move on from Metal Gear and has only ever returned because he never wanted to see his beloved series, the series he's created, the series that started his career get derailed by his departure and being made by people who don't understand Metal Gear. (Cough, cough, Metal Gear Survive)
      You really think Chapter 2 being empty was intentional? You really think he wanted to convey revenge by...having the player replay older missions at harder difficulties? Konami pulled the plug on this games budget because development was not only taking too long but too much money was being poured into it that they were afraid the games development budget was getting so large that it was affecting their ability to make an actual profit on the game. Which is why Ground Zeroes was released. So many things were cut from this game. It has nothing to do with Kojima being thematic. It has to do with the studio trying to save money on an overly ambitious product that was costing them way too much money to make.
      MGS5 is a weak, overworked, exhaustive punch. And is FAR from this subtle storytelling masterpiece you seem to think it is. All of the insanity in MGS2 was carefully constructed. Everything in MGS2, from the level design mimicking Shadow Moses, to the careful callbacks to dialogue in MGS1, the music, all of it. It was made to deliberately toy with expectations and make people question what they wanted.
      This? MGS5? Is not that and will never be that. MGS5 is the result of Kojima and Konami being sick of metal gear. That just happened to have a massive budget behind it with carefully detailed graphics. MGS5 will never get the delayed appreciation MGS2 got. Because it was not created to be an over budget disappointment. It simply was one.

Japanese game company's and devs do have a history of giving the middle finger to copyrights holders, but new copyright laws in Japan prevent that now from happing. So most likely what happen was when Konami and Kojima ask to use the rights were A. told no by the company who has the patent or B. they wanted to much money for the use. In Snake eater, he and BB were enemies. But they became friends, and this game tries to show that Ocelot actually has a caring side for the person he looks up to and considers a fellow comrade. He maybe ain't as flashy as he is in other MGS games, but the point wasn't to show him as an antagonist, but a friend. And thats one aspect of the game I actually like.
    Additionally, the game showed us Ocelot torturing Huey. But I agree, he could have been a bit more dickish while still being a bro to Venom.

    Minor correction, but the 'One that Covers' (the parasites used by Quiet, the End, the Pain, etc.) aren't the vocal cord parasites.
    I get it, though. Parasites as pretty much an early form of nanomachines was a little hard to stomach. (Though the vocal cord parasites specifically were more an early form of Foxdie)
    As for Mantis, no augmentations. He's a genuine psychic. Regardless of what Ocelot said in 2, even just the existence of the Sorrow debunks it.
    Lastly, just to be fair to Paz, even though she ultimately proceeded with her mission from Cipher, she was genuinely getting attached to BB and the others at Mother Base. Pretty much why she disclosed Zero's location if it would save Big Boss (moot point since Skull Face proceeded to attack and try to kill Big Boss because he wanted vengeance on him as much as Zero. *SPOILERS* In my opinion he is the most tortured character in the game and the only character we can really relate with. He was comrades with Big Boss for years, and not only does he lose limbs so he cant fight like he used to even though he is a skilled soldier, but he gets completely betrayed. He had no idea that Venom was a fake and Ocelot always knew. The entire time Miller genuinely believes he is with someone he has known for years, someone who he has been through a lot with, trying to build towards their future goals together as a team. But that is not the case at all, He is left behind with an imitation of what he once knew. With no choice but to feel anger and frustration after being abandonded and lied to, he ends up declaring revenge and actually trains solid snake years later lol. The player and him share the same phantom pain.

    Don't take this personally, but this is a weak analysis. In the future I'd suggest taking the time to better study the game before critiquing it on such a specific level. Your overall conclusions are generally well-founded but every time you go into specifics you reveal how little you actually payed attention to the game. For example, you were asking what Mantis has to do with Volgin? They were stored in the same facility. Mantis sensed the anger and resentment Volgin held for Boss. Volgin's hatred influenced Mantis, causing his body to reanimate as the Man on Fire. This is clearly stated in the game, and its just one example where you could have mitigated a lot of your own complaints by simply paying attention. If you want to make a more vague style of review, that's completely okay, but maybe stay away from nitpicking small details which you have admitted you weren't interested in enough to pay attention to. Hopefully you can take this criticism and use it to improve future reviews. Best of luck.

Beyond a few references in the main series it's never touched on and is confirmed as non-canon in the timeline. A fate that followed every MGS game Kojima didn't work on.

    The weapon slots limits you with one weapon of each category.

      Since the mother base here is just a giant empty box. There's basically no building you can go into.
      And all the soldiers ever do is guarding. No matter what unit they are supposed to be in.
      I'd say it's really a let down that you might just as well not showing the base at all like in PW.

      @Linda Niemkiewicz There are many tactics that can be just as efficient as each other depending on the situation. A group of enemies closely placed to each other: stun grenade, a bit farther so that a stun grenade can't get all of them: rocket punch. Two enemies walking beside each other, let's see, a couple of leg shots with the tranquilizer gun , may be an e-stun decoy, have an enemy slice it and get shocked , pull the other one before raising the alarm with the hand jehuty then slam their face into the ground. So many examples , just think ;)

      @linkinpark4everize 4 года назад

      @Linda Niemkiewicz You can challenge yourself though. Currently my base is at a pretty high level so I can't extract but the best soldiers. Replaying some of the early missions without being able to get rid of unconscious bodies as easily made the game feel fresh again for me. Also don't forget to disable reflex mode and MARKERS , see how well you fare in a giant enemy outpost prepared with sniper rifles, shotguns, body armor or during the night with night vision and binoculars, without being able to see where each enemy is at all times or the safety net that is reflex mode. Trust me, even after 200 hours or so of pure gameplay, it's tough, especially with the lower grade equipment and trying to remain undetected all the way through, but is much more satisfying when you get that S rank after an attempt that has lasted for little over an hour :D

    My favourite Metal Gear stories are MGS1 and 3, mainly because they're pretty straightforward. All the themes of war, politics, betrayal, genes, memes, and more enhance the stories, but don't drown them.
    At their core, these are stories about a man doing his duty despite the walls of his world being torn down around him. And that's what makes them compelling. Watching David and Jack fall in love, have their hearts broken, bodies abused, and their values questioned and sometimes torn apart all the while fighting and killing his way through men and women to stop a potential nuclear holocaust.
    It's compelling as all hell.

    It's a great review and all but something I don't understand is why nobody talks about the deeper elements of the game like the first infection on mother base which is one of the most player engaging moment in this game... Or why no one talks about all the questions this game asks about English language dominion and Language in general, about the question of ethnicity and borders in Africa.
    People seems to only want the entertaining parts of the game "the next episode of Big Boss epic story" or fan service such has "Play the fight between Solid and Venom" but the core of the game is really not there.
    In my opinion the serie's story has never been about the characters and there actions but more about the exploration of several political and philosophical themes (even if the writing of Kojima is a little cheesy by Western standards).
    Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain is about Lost, Identity, Language and Communication but it's too bad that many reviewer just talk about the tip of the iceberg, about how the game failed to tell a conventional story (The story of MGSV has to be earned by the player, it comes within the soldier's conversations, environmental narration and the cassette tapes)
    I hope that one day, the unfinished mess that is Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain will be seen by the majority of players as one of the greatest attempt to rise the medium like MGS2 in 2001

    Personally, my biggest problem with the Venom Snake twist is that it doesn't make sense for the medic to be as good at his job as the real Big Boss. No amount of hypno-therapy, facial surgery and body massages in the world could have given the medic the physical capabilities, nor the skills for that matter, that he needed to inpersonate Big Boss, considering he has no actual training in sneaking and stuff, yet he's somehow able to be just as good as the original. It's ridiculous.
    And before anyone says that he should have Big Boss' skills because he has his memories, that's like saying that someone that read on how to code with no prior experience can just jump right into game development. It takes months, maybe years, until you're reasonably ready.

The first time I went to Africa and started fighting walker gears i started packing a silenced lethal side arm and a grenade launcher. It helped me to realize the "downfall" of Big Boss. Sure tranqing people yields higher rewards but wet-work is just that...work. and when something feels like work the brain naturally starts to cut corners and do things in half the time with half the energy expenditure. I don't care about every A+ soldier when I'm looking for intel or a blueprint. Sometimes A+'s gotta die so i can just get in and out quickly lol.

    Don't consider this as a hate comment i just wanna point out some things that i disagree with.
    1) I think majority of people haven't quite understood that MGSV's story is quite different, let me explain. The story instead of revolving around the characters it revolves around it's enviroment and more importantly Venom himself. There's a video that tries to explain the story and i think it did it quite well. ruclips.net/video/bwH0AVGf5DI/видео.html
    2) You said that when you're dropped into the AO that it's just from point A to B, well not really, every mission has this list of secret side objectives that the player can discover when exploring the mission area, here's an example: Let's say the very first mission Phantom Limbs, your primary objective is to rescue Kaz, hovewer when the player opens the Idroid for the first time he/she can notice that there some other bases that are there free to explore, so out of curiosity, the player takes the detour to check it out, when he/she gets there they can notice a soldier that looks a bit out of place, red barret, a uniform that looks differently from the others, so the first instinct is to extract and so he does, wualah! It was a secret objective and game rewards the player accordingly.
    3) About the emptiness of the world when traversing it. It's a warzone what do you expect? Also when traveling from in your words "point A to B" that's a great opportunity to listen to those tapes.
    4) Characters like Man on Fire and Psycho Mantis aren't usseles they're there for a reason. Mantis was there to cause all those paranormal occurrences while also exploring his relationship with Liquid more, Man of Fire was there to strengten the Venom is not the real Big Boss more while also being the live impersonation of revenge.

This is an issue that many openworld games have with narrative. That being said the reason to play MGS5 is the addictive gameplay loop. Everything you do in this game benefits you in some way. The supplies and people you gather in the mission sections are used to upgrade Mother Base and research new equipment which you then use in missions where you can gather more materials, etc. It's a truly rewarding and addictive loop. I put close to 60 hours into the game without completing the story and enjoyed every minute of it. It remains near the top of my list of games I want to go back to and play again.

    i thought the introduction was actually super memorable. the way you are forced to crawl for the first 10 minutes of gameplay (since you obviously have atrophy after being in a coma for 9 years) and feeling totally helpless as psycho mantis and Volgin utterly demolish the hospital you find yourself in along with all the patients. It feels subversive to introduce one of the most badass video game characters of all time and have you literally crawling around helplessly in a hospital gown, vulnerable, missing an eye and an arm, forced to accept help from a stranger just to survive. like or dislike the game you can't deny the intro is incredibly memorable at the very least. to say that it just flat out "doesn't work" because it's "not fun, and the point of video games is to have fun" seems short sighted. There's not one unified "point" to video games, and sometimes a certain section of a game will sacrifice or tweak gameplay mechanics in order to serve a narrative, or subvert player expectations which I believe is what the game was doing here. A game can't be 100% only "fun" the whole time - sometimes it has to slow down and let the story and characters breathe a little.
    I found the intro to be incredibly gripping and captivating and had me on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what happened next although to be fair I do agree with the overall point that the game doesn't really do anything with it from there, mostly just barebones exposition that tries to tie together the fact that you're basically just jumping from mission to mission. definitely lacks the same time of staying power in terms of story that previous entries had although just in my opinion the missions and gameplay are fun enough to just about make up for it.

    In regards to Zero's confession to Big Boss as heard in the Truth Tapes, I think that even if Zero wasn't a vegetable by the time Big Boss woke up Boss would still hate him. Actions speak louder than words and the mess that Zero created would be more than enough personal justification for any normal person to despise Zero's guts till their parting breath, let alone Big Boss himself.
    The real plot hole is why didn't Big Boss find Zero after he woke up. It's been years since I played MGS4 but the time scale for the Aged Big Boss finding Zero after the Patriots network went down has to have been at most a week. That's an older, and thus weaker, Big Boss in a world completely foreign to him with far superior surveillance & security technology.

    If the entire game was as cinematic as the opening, and if every base/outpost was as meticulously crafted as Camp Omega, I don’t think anyone would have complained

    MGS 4 is my favorite metal gear game and I don’t care what anyone says. MGS 5 just makes me appreciate 4 so much more. Both great games though

    It's not the send off we wanted but it's the best gameplay MGS by far, and if you got into the FOB missions, wow. Very challenging.

      I always considered the FOB missions to be the precursor to the thematic idea of the Solid Snake Simulator of MGS2
