Squirrels do not, regardless if a tree or ground squirrel.

We used this trap to catch skunks that moved in under our building at work. We baited with peanut butter and tuna. We’d set the trap near a tree then call animal control when we caught one. Animal control would use the tree as cover, sneak up and inject it with some blue stuff in a syringe on a pole.

When we were getting work done on the house one year I asked one of the workers why there were so many of these traps around. The guy I asked was the one who set them. He likes to eat squirrels, and we had a lot of them. He would take the traps and drown them in a 50 gallon barrel of water after his shift. Usually he got at least six.

I bought a Tomahawk Starling trap .. but have had limited results with it. I caught a couple, which I "dispatched". I also caught some other birds in it, which I released (cat bird, cardinal, etc.) Unfortunately, I caught one cardinal in the trap, at a time I wasn't monitoring the trap. A hawk saw the cardinal in the trap and was somehow able to get its talons/beak into the cage to nab it. It tried to pull it out thru the wire openings, but couldn't do that, so it bit its head off. After that, I tried to set up the trap in areas where I could see if anything got caught in it. Some smaller birds (chickadees & titmouses) got in, but were also able to get themselves out of it without my help. Seems all the Tomahawk traps are well made and reasonably priced.
