Oh Noah, you aren't the only person who walks looking at the ground. Some people, myself included, find it hard to trust the ground. It's nice when you can remember to look up and around. Take a break and sit to get some look around time if you're stuck watching your steps.

it's weird to go on social media and realize, that all your peers are at the same developmental phase as you. Like just listening to them parrot the same insecurities and epiphanies that plague your everyday is comforting, but also just neat from a 'oh this is what a fully developed brain is like'.

When I started my 1-hour walks before my 9 to 5, I just sort of integrated it to get off my weight loss plateau (and boy did it help). I later started going through a lot of sh*t at home, so I integrated something new into it: recording voice notes to myself. From the outside, to any passerby, I'm just recording a VN to someone, but to me, I'm venting my guts out in public without looking crazy. I think it's an amazing outlet and something more people should try out for themselves for the extra kick of releasing not just physical but also psychological energy.
thanks a lot for the video!
    sincerely,
    forward-looker

Ground looker here too - something I only realised was abnormal fairly recently.
I've theorised it's partially something to do with my adhd and, particularly when younger, being bored and uninterested in my surroundings because they don't give me an immediate dopamine hit e.g. in the same way video games do.
Possibly this in combination with other reasons ive seen given in the comments eg social anxiety making me avoid looking at other people.
But had a similar epiphany to you recently where I've recognised how pleasant and calming it can be for me to be outdoors and consciously appreciate nature.

I find it a lot easier to go on long walks and hikes since owning a dog, but understand adopting an animal is kind of a big commitment just to have an exercise buddy. Idk if you're a dog-enjoyer, but if so, you can see if your local animal shelter has a dog walking program! One of the shelters here in central FL will let you take a dog out for a field trip and bring them back in the evening- it's good motivation for long walks for the human, and great socialization and stimulating for the pups.

Fostering is also an option sometimes. Where I am, they pay for food and medical treatment, and you get a dog for awhile. I also know there is a phenomenon called 'foster fails,' which is when you end up adopting a dog you fostered, but it's like test-driving dog ownership.

My body feels like shit and my mental is what I believe they professionally call "dogshit". I've never had that "click" to be physically fit- not that I don't want to- just never had any drive. I DID do the mental anime/video game/imaginary shit whenever I did have to do anything physical. Man i totally connect with you on this one. I also played sports my whole life and was super competitive always the best on the team and played collegiate baseball and after that was done I had no interest in “locking the fuck in” anymore. I too have recently tried to dip my feet into art here and there and it’s really helped but I still have that competitive feeling in me. When you said it’s was just second nature to be that way cause you had too I never acknowledged that and Now I’m 30 and have 2 kids and I’m not over weight but I’m definitely not in the best shape I could be in. I too miss locking the fuck in and now I feel I have a reason too. For my kids. I love being a dad and I wanna be the best father I can be for my sons. I believe being healthy is apart of that journey. I’m going to join you on this journey brother for myself. Thanks or the inspiration it feels good knowing there’s someone out there who isn’t an alpha bro weirdo I can “lock the fuck in with”.

And then I tore my Achilles tendon… it sucks, but my mindset shifted in the short time I was in the gym and honestly helped give me better discipline for physical therapy as well as a real goal to reach towards in my recovery process. I also met a bunch of great people and it gave me a good sense of community. I think having a place like this, if it’s a gym or something else, is super important for all of us to have in our lives.

Doing the same thing, Noah. Been going hard on my training, I'm on phase 8 of a training app I use, each phase being 8 weeks and I'm really happy with my changes, increase in strength, and hypertrophy gains. Been unemployed for a while now too (the animation industry is in the shits, everyones out of a job) so I'm dialing in and focusing on training, nutrition, and art. Actually typing in my progress in my notion pages, having eating/cooking not feel like a chore, I'm going 5x a week to the gym & love it, even though my boyfriend and friends aren't really into the gym. At 29, I feel like I'm seeing my best results ever and really enjoying this because I'm not k!lling myself for this arbitrary end goal number or day, still going out, still allowing treats while im in a deficit, and its just been really cool time. Also learned that I loooooove smoking a joint before my work outs, highly recommend getting high before lifting weights, still hitting PRs and having such a fun, relaxed time, picking up shit and putting it down. Missed your training videos, it was in my rotiation of Lean Beef Patty, Jeff Nippard, Max Taylor, etc, so don't think you have to hit these arbitrary requirements to post a video, just post it & just seeing you do your thing is inspiring enough for people who subscribe to you.

Went from extremely in shape 17 year old who lifted consistently and ran 20+ miles a week, to an extremely depressed 350lb 21 year old with extreme agoraphobia. I got out 4 years ago and I'm almost 26 now. Sorted out my depression/anxiety/ adhd. Significantly happier with myself now and married, but miss being in shape and feeling like i could run anywhere/lift anything. Miss my confidence too. Something within the past 6 months clicked for me too, and Ive been more active and losing weight finally.

growing up on a mountain across the way from burnaby mountain, where ofc SFU is (one of my high school teachers would bike from burnaby mountain and then up our frickin mountain, yknow like 20 km east+north with maybe a quarter being this extreme incline), going for forest runs or jogs or walks i will just note i find vastly superior to something like a treadmill. i live in toronto now which is like, "concrete jungle" or whatever but when i want to run or jog i still make sure to go out to the extensive and beautiful ravine system we have here which i don't want to say is neglected but being one of the few things nature-wise with which it can can kind of give vancouver a run for its money you'd think it would be more of a thing people advertise as a great part of the city; instead it's treated almost like a secret, i'd lived here eight years before really knowing anything about it. huge digression, all i wanted to say was i find when possible running jogging walking in nature/greenspace i just find immeasurably better than treadmill. i'm five years older than you and five years ago got sober, got legit like bruce lee ripped, eventually fell down the hole of ptsd and chronic pain and am just starting to crawl out of OUD and completely neglecting/rejecting/abjecting my body, and one of the most exciting parts to me is getting back out into nature, being with & seeing the trees and the animals and water bodies and creepy crawlies [this is all re: 7:38] .

I’ve also had to learn how to hike while appreciating my surroundings rather than focusing on my Fitness Goals. It’s way more fun to walk from curiosity to curiosity instead of thinking about how much distance I have left

Really recommend Geoffrey Verity Schofield (bodybuilding), Alan Thrall (strongman, general fitness inspo), and especially Mark Wildman for conditioning, kettlebells, and more. Big fan of Dan John too, who made the goblet squat and armor building complex and has a great podcast

I’ve been splitting my weekly workouts into 2 days weights 2 days cardio 2 days hot yoga. I’m really focusing on mobility and overall strength and health. I’m 36 and trying my best to stay fit and not become immobile by the time my 50. It’s been great, and I’m seeing and feeling some great results 💪

I've never had anything exactly like the Halo arms, But I totally get it because I get runners high and have some weird/cool imaginings.
I was definitely listening to music and was just like, in another realm.
I would force myself to run uphill, because then running downhill, its like you don't even exist, you just effortlessly arrive at the bottom of the hill.
I totally know what you mean about having a level of irony that separates you from things.
I've never played sports in my life, but I do know that in modern life we are totally missing this level of intimacy that comes from doing physical things together.
That kind of intimacy used to be a much bigger part of our lives and we don't even realize it's missing.
Finding out that my favorite band, Sparks, who is the most contrarian, sarcastic, ironic, band I've ever heard, they were also huge art nerds in college, but finding out that they were jocks in highschool blew my mind.
    You can be both.

Nah dude, staring at the ground while hiking is normal but like you said, when you do stop and just observe for a while, it’s incredibly satisfying to just soak in the beauty and how far you’ve gone.

as a young man trying to reconcile my more sensitive and empathetic side and my want to engage in and be accepted by these more “traditionally masculine” spaces, I really appreciate this video. I really appreciate having experiences similar to mine reflected back to me and knowing I’m not alone even if it feels like I am. Do you have any advice on how to get into these spaces later in adolescence as someone who wasn’t always accepted into them as a child? Thank you

this blog is surreal. I also quit a college sport then stopped exercising completely. when I was 27 I had a very similar insight (I was happiest playing sports, so why am I not exercising?). got super ripped, super arrogant, then figured my shit out enough to marry and have kid(s) at 31. 33 now, life is good, but mania and bad feelings persist. the gym definitely helps, though.

You definitely aren't the only person to look at the ground while you hike. I tend to always look at the ground when I walk for a variety of reasons and have to remind myself to look up often.
Some if it is spatial awareness, I tend to drift when I walk so I need to watch the path. When I look up I feel like I'm walking on a tight rope. That and I like to look out for big roots to shoutout to the people hiking behind me. Those stops though really let you take it all in.

Wow, you look like an MMA fighter on the right!
I understand the “pushing past the emergency red button” in context to weightlifting. I’ve realized that I would give up prematurely on a set or I wouldn’t push myself on the number of sets and/pr reps because I didn’t know how to differentiate pain/burning from COMPLETE fatigue.
I think I used to know back when I was in my early 20s but depression hit hard and I’m still struggling to get my fitness back to where I was and then some.
It’s super easy to give up but I try to push myself to absolute physical fatigue in weightlifting.
As for cardio, I’m struggling getting a jogging routine up. Summer heat is here and I just don’t want to do it but I will, hopefully.
Something about claiming strength gains as a victory feels really really REALLY gratifying in a masculine sense. It almost feels like a form of gender euphoria and I’m a bit jealous that I never got that team sports experience but being autistic and gay didn’t lens itself well on group activities so I’m hoping to reclaim that feeling.
Even if I don’t I want to do it with solo activities. I’m 27, and I get trying to get into that TRUE adult mode (perfect adult form lol) where you’re ready to juggle it all but I think you’ll be fine man. You’ll have a supportive partner, I hope, that won’t let you shoulder it all.
Plus, you’re making great progress already! Nice chest and shoulders (yeah I’m gay but from an objective standpoint lol).
