Bat Out of Hell is the only record in the top ten selling albums of all time where all of the lyrics and music were written by just one person.

    One of my favorite albums.
    7. For Crying Out Loud
    6. All Reved Up With No Place To Go
    5. Heaven Can Wait
    4. Bat Out Of Hell
    3. Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad
    2. You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth
    1. Paradise By The Dashboard Light
My one is special to me because I lost my girlfriend a year ago. That was one of her favorite songs. And she would sing the female part and the surprising part was that she knew the lyrics lol. It will always be her song. RIP Susan 10/21/1964 - 09/11/2021

That Kerrang poll that Steven talks about was printed in an early issue of Kerrang. I still have a copy of it somewhere. Kerrang was originally a one off Heavy Metal special from the writers of Sounds. It covered a very broad spectrum of metal, very little of which would be classed as such now: Angus Young on the cover and features Motorhead, Girlschool, UFO, Saxon, Kiss, Trust, Michael Schenker, Wild Horses, ZZ Top, Pat Benatar, Styx, Vardis, Ted Nugent, Blackfoot, Graham Bonnet, Ronnie Montrose, Rose Tattoo and Pete Frame Deep Purple "Family Tree".

It has great sentimental feelings for me , I bought it when it first came out , and couldn't stop playing it for weeks on end. Thanks for the review Pete, Steven, and Simon , and the banter is brilliant . They need to find an album from the 1970's that appeals to Steven.

    6. You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)
    5. Paradise by the Dashboard Light
    4. Heaven Can Wait
    3. For Crying Out Loud - love that it`s in three parts. Brilliant lyrics `And can`t you see my faded Levi`s bursting apart`. My favourite section is the final section.
    2. Two Out of Three Ain`t Bad - this has been number one for several of the intervening years. Amazing lyrics once again. Imagine trying to console someone by saying cheer up `Two Out of Three Ain`t Bad` 🙂
    1. Bat Out of Hell - The guitar work just before the intro fades is cutting and `stinging` is the best way I can describe it. I`d never heard a guitar sound like that before this and it had a big effect on me. The solo later in the song is famously known as being done in one take by Todd. Stunning!

A quick aside or two. Sea had autumn fest with Andy Powell so just to let everyone know how fantastic wishbone ash were on Thursday night at the ferry on Argus 50th anniversary tour! Pete also referenced a band on the best current bands post 2000, so again just shout out how tight and fantastic vintage caravan were last night at poetry club within swg3 complex. Great video guys, Pete in particular made the point about having to have been there. It does help. Looking back most of my favourite albums are those I have heard bit by bit. A radio play here, buying a single there, catching a live performance of one of the albums tracks on television there etc. I bought the first three singles from Bat Out of Hell before I bought the album. The first two singles were both edited as was the B side `For Crying Out Loud`. First heard the entire album when my brother came home on leave from the Army and he`d taped the album onto a blank cassette from one of his mates. Hearing the whole thing, especially the longer version of `Two Out of Three` and `For Crying Out Loud` was very special. I think the bit by bit approach makes the overall experience more satisfying and enjoyable. For me anyway.

Winter beer season has arrived in California, even though it’s still October. Winter ales/lagers/warmers are some of my favorite beers. I was delighted to see the return of one of my favorite discoveries last year: Einstock Icelandic Winter Ale. This is an 8% winter ale with a great dark color and wonderful flavor profile. Einstock has become one of my favorite breweries in the past couple years. They produce a great Wee Heavy Scotch Ale, Toasted Porter, Pale Ale and Dopplebock (the other winter release that also appeared on the store shelves this week). Not sure if they are available in your neck of the woods (Pete, they are probably available in NY), but I highly recommend seeking them out. Cheers gentlemen! 🍺

@@TranquilityFireReid A winter ale is not far off from a Scottish Ale. It's generally a dark, malty ale often brewed with seasonal spices. They also are usually 6-8% alcohol...hence the term "winter warmer". I'm surprised they aren't available in Scotland...maybe they figured a Scottish ale is close enough 😉 I would suspect Samuel Smith’s Winter Welcome Ale would be available as it is brewed in England.

How difficult it was for them to get a record deal. CBS record executive Clive Davis telling Jim Steinman "Do you know how to write a song? Do you know anything about writing? If you're going to write for records, it goes like this: A, B, C, B, C, C. I don't know what you're doing. You're doing A, D, F, G, B, D, C. You don't know how to write a song.... Have you ever listened to pop music? Have you ever heard any rock-and-roll music.... You should go downstairs when you leave here...and buy some rock-and-roll records". Hahaha........ Wrong $$$$$$.

I bought the Bat album shortly after seeing the video of Meat doing the title track on the Old Grey Whistle Test in the UK, as I bellieve did a lot of people. However I didnt keep hold of it for very long as at the time the 15 year old me didnt really appreciate the ballads or the stage musicality of the album, and wanted to hear more guitar solos, not sax solos. Skip forwards to my very late 30s though and it was a different matter, and now today I dont think theres a duff track on it, though I could still have done with one less ballad and another more uptempo song like Dead Ringer or Peel Out or Stark Raving Love etc etc.
Anyway my ranking - and to be honest No 1 & 7 will not change however the rest can swap around at will - for example while I chose this list after waking up one morning last week and them coming to me in this order, after playing it through a few more times yesterday and today I could have raised For Crying Out Loud higher up. Knowing now what I didn't then, you can really hear that this was absolutely meant to become a stage musical
    1. Bat out of Hell - an absolute bone fide classic, just sheer magnificence and one that I don't tire from even after listening to it many times - I also have an edited version on a compilation, however the full version blows it out of the water. Everything is at the right time and of the right length. Fantastic.
    2. You Took the Words right out of my mouth - a hooky poptastic rocking little confection, always gets me singing along. Bright & happy. The corny and cheesy spoken intro also has some charm about it.
    3. 2 Out of 3 ain't bad - a real heartfelt earworm, maybe also liked more when done live - especially on the 87 live album with a great Bob Kulick guitar solo in it, but of the ballads, great. No-one does overwrought better than MrLoaf.
    4. Paradise by the dashboard Light - fun, hooky good time and a great performance, especially from Ellen Foley. Reminders of schooldays and going to parties and discos & fraternising with the lasses from the local girl's school.
    5. All ReVVed Up with no place to go - disappointed at first due to it having a sax rather than guitar solo - at age 15 I didnt want to hear sax, I wanted to hear guitar & found it a bot too ploddy until the fast bit at the end. Very nice thumping rock song though and a good uplift to end side 1.
    6. For Crying Out Loud - could have, and maybe should have, put this one higher, great end of album heart felt power ballad, that goes into a climatic powerful kitchen sink and everything ending.
    7. Heaven Can Wait - Could have done with one less ballad and this is the one that I still think is only just ok band not on a par with the rest of the album

Hard to go against the title track, but I must admit to have always had a soft spot for "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad" myself. I once saw Todd R interviewed about it & he said something along the lines of them wanting to do something in the vein of The Eagles with that track, which I do NOT hear at all, but it was the highest-charting single from the LP, so there you go. Also, just curious if Simon knows if that compilation "And I Shit You Not" is available as an import here in the States?

The third album I ever bought was Hits Out of Hell and for a long time the only Meat album I thought I needed. Eventually, I picked up Bat, but never got into the other three tracks. Fast forward to last week. I've grown to really like this album. Even so, I thought the ranking would be easy. How wrong I was tracks were moving up and down with two vying for each position. So, I'm going to cheat .
In 3rd place: All Revved Up, You Took the Words, Paradise by the Dashboard Light.
2nd place: Heaven Can Wait , Two out of Three.

I pretty much agree with your rankings, I heard first this when I was around 10/11 years old in 1981, it may not be 'metal' or even anything approaching 'hard rock' but for me and my mates it was in our collections along with Iron Maiden Killers, Highway to Hell and Status Quo's 12 Gold Bars. I can clearly remember doing 'tape to tape' on my friends dad's hi-fi and playing that cassette so much it wore out. Listening to it these days it absolutely sounds like musical theater and it's kind of hilarious that as kids we were all rocking out and playing air guitar to it. ... but yeah, I still find it highly enjoyable to listen to.

That`s the movie where a guy is buried on his motorbike and comes flying out of the grave just like on the BOOH cover. Psychomania was released back in 1973 incidentally. Then a short time after that I actually saw the album cover designed by Richard Corben in a record shop. Perhaps Richard Corben had been influenced by that movie?

    5. All revved up with no place to go. When it speeds up it is just awesome.

`Bat Out of Hell` as a single was released with a 12" blood red vinyl version. The same week it was released a 12" `Heart of Glass` single was released by Blondie. I could only get one. This was at a time when 12" releases would sell out quickly so you either bought it the first week or risked missing out. Anyway I sensibly opted to buy Meat Loaf (good job because I grew to loathe `Heart of Glass!). I cycled to one of my favourite record shops and on the way back I hit the kerb and went over the handle bars. Landed on the grass verge so I wasn`t hurt. A passing elderly lady came over to me with a worried look on her face and asked me if I was all right. I said to her "Hang on a minute" and looked inside the record bag (which I had managed to keep hold of as I came off the bike. Phew!) Checked the record which thankfully was unbroken and then I looked at her and said "Yes I`m fine now!" She gave me a VERY odd look and walked on past!

Every track is at least good.
Bat out of hell - perfection. I know opinions are subjective, but if you don't like BOOH, we can't be friends
Paradise by the dashboard light - pure theatre. Yes, you need to be in the mood, but if you are it carries you along on a rock n roll, innuendo filled, humorous classic
You took the words - love love love. Would be higher but the two above are even better.
Two out of three - classic Loafballad territory here with typical Steinman clever-clogs lyrics
For crying out loud - another ballad, but I love the arrangement as an album closer. Almost 9 minutes!
Heaven can wait - soft ballad
All revved up - the least interesting song here, but I love the sax and it ends as a decent rocker (I don't know if SoT will agree with ranking the ballads higher, but it's the closest thing to 'filler' for me)

For me this album will ALWAYS have a special in my heart. The thing that people need to remember is that Jim Steinman started out in musical theater. He had no interest in making an album. It took from '75-'77 to get the album recorded. These songs are basically mini-plays. You have to suspend your disbelief and submerge yourself heart & soul into it and just let go. If you can do it for a movie for 2 hours........why can't you do it for 40 plus minutes?
    7) All Revved Up With No Place To Go

Jim Steinman`s uniqueness and lyrical brilliance, Meat`s voice, Ellen Foley, members of Utopia and the E Street Band, the wonderful backing vocals of (in particular)Rory Dodd, Richard Corben`s brilliant cover artwork, songs in a style that I`d never heard before - rock `n` roll/gothic/spector-ish/spoken vocals/a male/female duet quite unlike any other I`d heard! etc.etc. All this AND Todd Rundgren!! I know some of those things I listed in the music style had been done before such as The Doors and The Shangri-La`s doing spoken vocals but at that time I didn`t really know of them and discovered later on when I back tracked through the years so to speak. Then I said to myself "Ah yes I can see where Steinman`s influences were" but as I say when I got into BOOH these styles were unique to me then.
The playing on the album was of a very high quality I`d say and on this album, produced by Rundgren and later Steinman albums produced by Jim himself they seemed to find a way to make a piano sound quite unlike anyone else has. If you think of the piano intro to `Total Eclipse Of the Heart` for instance the piano has such a clear, gothic sound and you can hear that on just about all of Steinman`s work. I love it! Oh and the background harmonies are always superb!

    3. Heaven Can Wait: A bit meandering when compared with the previous tracks, but as far as necessary "calm down" power ballads go, this one's not bad. 8/10

People of my age didn't really know this album (aside from a couple of tracks) until Bat II hit big and we ended up digesting both Bats at once. (personally, I ended up preferring Dead Ringer to either, but that is very likely JUST me!) Doesn't massively seem to have been embraced by another generation (or two) after mine, judging by Mr Loaf's respectable, but hardly mindblowing Spotify stats. Anyway, I don't currently own a copy of this, and haven't for some years - it's one of those I always figure I'll get around to getting at some point but clearly isn't a priority. So some contentious rankings here, but this is how I hear 'em...7 - 2 Out of 3 Ain't Bad - no, it's not bad, a very well written song indeed...but excessive radio play means I tired of this long before I knew who the Meat even was. 6 - Paradise - ditto. 5.. For Crying Out Loud - like this one, but yeah it goes on a bit too long. 4. Heaven Can Wait - really like this one and it sits in the one part of the album where you feel you need a slower tune, so it works on that front for me. 3. You Took the Words...also massively overplayed but still like it. 2. All Revved Up...glad Pete had this as high as me, know it's the underdog, but as an ex-sax player I've always loved this one. 1. Bat - epic and genre-defining. Could listen to this any day of the week and never get sick of it.

One, Mountain's Nantucket Sleighride, I only got into many years later, but the others were Down To Earth by Rainbow, and, of course, Bat... 40 years later, much as I like a lot of Meat and Steinmans other work, this is still, for me, the best thing either of them ever did, as is often the case with debut albums (Van Halen... Montrose, err Steel Panther?) Ranking it was a bitch. But I did it...

However I do need to comment on the Halloween conversation, as I grew up down the road from Simon can’t believe he never carved a tSuede and put candles in as a child, nor went out for bonfire night round the houses with a guy ( Guy Fawkes) collecting a penny for the Guy to buy fireworks., the Guy was then burnt on the bonfire. Now Steven as I brought up my children in Scotland, and learnt a suede is a turnip, but guising was a Scottish tradition of children dressing up with masks going visiting houses disguised to hide from spirits and that went to America but came back as trick or treat, not the Guy thing.
Think pumpkins replaced turnips for carving because as a father they are easier to carve without lacerating our fingers. 😅

As I have said before, my judgment on music is based on head, heart, time and place.
I remember this album being released and at the time I really did not like it. I was a cool hipster dude (in my head) and I disliked this music and what it represented. Looking back, I was so judgmental. If it was popular, how could it be good? And look at how boring all of the fans are!!! (Why did I not have more friends?)
All these years later I thought I would try to give it a listen, just the music, not all the negative baggage....and it sounded like pub music. Have a few beers and have a sing a long in a Midlands pub on a Friday night. Sorry, I was hoping for a better response.
Can I slightly modify something that was said about British music in the 1970s. It became either very tedious and middle of the road on one side of things. On the other side rock was becoming quite distant, unattainable, pretentious etc. The atmosphere became ripe for something fresh to wake things up. "A force 9 gale of bad breath" (a Stranglers reference)....and that is what happened.
I often think that musical revolution and change grows out of tedium and safety.
Keep up the good work chaps.

I'll stand by my thoughts on punk though, yes, the youth wanted and got something new, but it actually changed the music scene very little - unlike grunge which did genuinely end a lot of bands who couldn't adapt, most bands in the late 70s continued on as is and were very successful doing so, but most mainstream music commentary now turns that on its head. 👍
