Wow. A lot of negative comments. The man has every right to tell his story. And this was a good one that shed insight into a work of art. The fact that Meat is not around does not make a difference. Hitler is not around either. (pardon the hyperbole) Is it really shocking to discover that a musician/actor was a temperamental ass? Harder to find one that wasn't/isn't. Meatloaf's sins seem paltry compared to a Michael Jackson. Separate the man from the work and take a grain of salt. Thanks, Barry!

Agreed. So many great artists, writers and musicians would be 'cancelled' for not meeting the rigorous moral standards of the modern 'liberal' western establishment - many musicians ARE being removed for their personal opinions and behaviour. But their work shouldn't be taken off radio playlists. If, say, Gary Glitter and Rolf Harris' music isn't played in public it should be for the reason it's terrible (especially the former) and for no other reason. If you don't like Meatloaf's music, fine (I don't) but don't use dislike of the man as a pretext to cancel his work.

Judging by the comments, I thought that this was going to be a nasty take down of the man.
    It wasn't.
It was just an interesting observation from someone involved in his work.
Granted, it was a little gossipy in moments, but such anecdotes give us an insight into the personalities of the people we know, and I enjoyed it.
Our 'heroes' are just human beings, and it wouldn't be the first time I found out that an artist I liked wasn't what I'd thought. One of my favourites happens to be a complete arsehole, but you get that.
    Love your work.
On a completely unrelated topic, my first album (at 15 years old) was Deep Purple's 'Made in Japan'.
Am I the only one who thinks that their studio albums are, by comparison, flat-sounding and very disappointing?
Bat out of hell was a great album.

From what I know about Meat Loaf's life and career, I don't think he was homophobic, at least not in any kind of aggressive way. Though he had to be coaxed (by actor Graham Jarvis) into signing onto the cast of the 1974 Roxy production of 'The Rocky Horror Show', he did so, going on to reprise his roles in the 1975 Broadway production as well as the role of Eddie in the film version 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show', all these iterations of a show revolving around themes of bisexuality and gender fluidity generating scores of gay fans. Meat Loaf took pride in his 'Rocky Horror' associations for the remainder of his life.
It is true that Meat Loaf eventually adopted right-wing politics, which are usually at least tacitly homophobic, but I've never encountered mention of the singer using that position to disparage gay people.

    • @Gira21Gramos

    • @barrymoore4470
      @barrymoore4470 8 месяцев назад

@@Gira21Gramos Yes, that was in reference to the 1974 Roxy production of 'The Rocky Horror Show'. Meat Loaf described how he was taken aback at seeing Tim Curry appear for rehearsals in his "sweet transvestite" attire, singing the accompanying lyrics, and fled the premises wondering what he had gotten himself into. Fellow cast member Graham Jarvis (hired to play the Narrator) followed him and had to coax him into returning. Meat Loaf eventually agreed to stay on the production, but insisted on not having to wear any ladies' stockings, but eventually he did even that, in his scenes calling for it playing Dr. Scott.

Those negative attributes of Meat's were something I sort of came to know about in his final years of life. It doesn't frankly come as much of a shocker that he treated Desmond that badly. Being a musician who's also part of the gay community myself, I found it pretty heartbreaking that one of the vocalists I admire had such bad attitudes.

People definitely have multiple sides, some agreeable, some disappointing (depending on your point of view)
I’m old enough to know when Bat Out of Hell was new, but his acting turns in things like that exceptional House episode, or an understanding motel manager during 2010’s “Beautiful Boy” is how I’d like to remember the man, outside of his music. Can’t help how others feel inside their heads about this or that subject. As far as behavior you can only hope for improvement, and after death, acknowledging mistakes were made.

Weeeeeell, Lennon slapped women around and Roger Waters has never actually sued anyone who implied he was a raging Jew hater (despite his hot air) , yet everyone loves the Beatles and Pink Floyd, are we going to treat Meat Load different because his music isn't as highbrow? I'm not going to be disposing of my Meat Loaf archive. To be fair, you have called Lennon out and you did report what Polly Sampson said about RW, I acknowledge that. Still, a deep dive into Rogers political beliefs and how the have been reflected in his work would be, stimulating.

Desmond Child is an interesting character, he’s written some of the worst songs ever recorded, but hit the right timing and they became popular and were hits.
Who knows if any or all of this story is true or not, but as others have said here Meat Loaf isn’t here to defend himself, so it’s interesting timing for him to reveal this story and put it in his book, a bit dubious. My disdain for Child’s songwriting knows no bounds though, every time I’ve seen his songwriting credit on something I know it’s going to be shit and it always is.

He's not the only one. Patti didn't have nice things to say after her time working with Meat ended either.

Bat Out of Hell 3 was actually my introduction to Meatloaf when I was in college. Just because Aday was conservative and was an ass didn't make him homophobic. Perhaps Child is simply being heterophobic? Heterophobes love to thrown around the homophobic word but don't seem to reflect on themselves. Are we to believe every word Child says because he is gay or is questioning him automatically homophobic? RIP Aday and Steinman, one of the greatest collaborations in rock history.
