  • 1971 Dodge Charger Super Bee Hemi vs 1972 Buick GSX Stage 1. Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race (PSMCDR). Factory Stock Drag Race.
First car is a 1971 Dodge Charger Super Bee, the other a 1972 Buick GSX. The Super Bee has a 426 hemi, and the GSX has a 455 Stage 1. The 455 stage 1 was rated 270 net horsepower, and the 426 Hemi was rated 425 gross horsepower (around 330 net horsepower). The Dodge Charger Super Bee hemi has a 4-speed manual transmission, and the Buick GSX has a 3-speed automatic TH400. 3.90 rear gears are in the GSX, and the Hemi Super Bee has 4.30. The Super Bee hemi weighs 3979 pounds, with driver. The GSX is 4254 pounds. There were only 9 total 1971 Dodge Charger Super Bee Hemi cars produced with a 4-speed. There were only 22 total 1972 Buick GSX cars produced with the Stage 1 and automatic transmission.
There is an error in the video. The 4-speed Hemi came with 3.54 gears standard.

Back in 1974 I bought a 1971 Dodge Charger Super Bee. Red with a black vinyl roof, 440 six pack, automatic. With just a set of headers and torque converter upgrade; I was turning 12.9 in the quarter mile. This was with street tires and 3.54 gears inside the Dana 60 housing. I kept that car into the early 1980's. Great memories. Wish I still had it.

In my experience a typical scenario.
Back in 69 a friend of mine and I used to take his 440 GTX over to Fremont Cal dragstrip for grudge racing night on Wed.
The Gtx was running 3.9 ge a rs headers and a Holley carb with a custom curve in the distributor.
It had a 727 torque filter trans and 8 inch wrinklewall slicks running 8 psi screwed into the rims.
In this relatively stock configuration the car would consistently run between 13.05 and 13.10 at around 103 mph.
Which was actually more than a full second faster than stock and quite good for a daily driver at the time.
We encountered about 4 hemis that year.
    We beat all of them.
The GTX was set up to hook immediately and leave hard.
This invariably resulted in a hole shot on the hemis especially the 4 speed cars.
At 60 feet we generally had better than 3 car lengths on the hemi cars if we cut a quick light.
The hemi by mid track would start to run us down and at the end of the quarter generally we only had a half a car length left. But we won.
The hemis had 2 visible problems.
    1.
If the driver brought them off th e line hard the rear tires went up in smoke.
2.The hemis seemed to take a while to get up on their power band.
Once they did though they re a lly ran but didn't have quite enough distance to make up for the initial hole shot
And of course we were somewhat lighter.
I noticed this in street races as well.
I was running a 427 435 hp Corvette and didn't have any problem with a stock hemi on the street. My closest races were against 440 6 pak Mopars.
These cars with 3.9 to 4.10 gears and an a utomatic were very very quick over the entire quarter mile.

No matter what, I honestly can’t see any true gear head turning down either of these incredible muscle cars if they were offered one, or even honestly disrespecting either of them as both deserve respect and unlike people, the cars can’t read what name is written on them and they don’t care what name is on them either. Got to hand it to the Buick. It's running basically a low compression Buick Electra motor with a cam vs a slightly detuned track motor known as the street Hemi and gives it a good fight.

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure all three of those chargers on the cover of that issue were later found and restored. They were later featured on the cover of mopar magazine about 10 years ago. I believe the red one was a bee and the other ones were r/t. Also I remember reading something about either one or all of them being test cars for dodge as well. Anyone here able to verify or disprove/correct any of this, I have the magazine buried in a box somewhere.

      Hemi listed as Gross Torque...
      Gsx listed as Net Torque...
At the flywheel vs the rear wheels. Big difference.
Also, Hemi still had 10.5 to 1 compression
      455 had 8.5 to 1

The Super Bee was never a model of its own. It was an option package on the Dodge Coronet. I am a huge fan of the '68 and '69 Super Bee, but they really ruined the front end on the '70 model. The '68-'70 Charger was a gorgeous car, unfortunately they ruined that too for '71. It's still a decent looking car, but nothing like the '68-'70 model.
The results don't surprise me. Two very heavy cars, but that Hemi had the edge. It's amazing how much those cars weighed, back then when they were not loaded down with government garbage. My 2006 Ford Crown Vic transportation car weighs less than either one of those. And if I wanted to build a race car out of it, I could easily get rid of a few hundred more pounds.

Never really cared for the ‘71/72 Charger body style. Too big in a the rear sides and C pillar. ‘73/74 were better looking because the C pillar was bright down further into the rear side.
The 4.7V8 in my ‘08 Ram makes 310/335…more HP than the Buick. Times change…

You are allowed a point in a half compression increase in this class. I'm sure the Buick took advantage of the mods allowed in this class. Both of these cars are making at least 500hp. And that's not gross either. It takes serious power to run mid twelve. Especially on street tires and through the mufflers. Imagine these monster motors with modern fuel injection and eight speed transmissions.
