As the driver of the Camaro, let me say that Paul in the Duster, is a class act and his car is very well sorted out for Pure Stock racing. At 72 years young I am just having fun and enjoying life. I didn't build my Camaro from the ground up to be a Pure Stock 'top dog' - I don't race regularly - in fact I only race once a year at this event. 4-speed cars are overall not as fast as the automatics and my car is a 4-speed. I am number 11 on the all time fastest list, but maybe not on the most consistent list. There were 3 4-speed cars in the top 20 cars this year. Then the ZL-1 has a double-pumper carb, all the others have vacuum secondary carbs - and yes contestants use that to 'tune' their cars launch - my right foot is the only tune for my secondaries. One of the contestants told me his car picked up 6 tens of a second going to an automatic transmission, but I will just stay with the 4-speed as for now I just play around once a year. I'm not a drag racer, never was a drag racer, but I invite all of you to come try it. Put 500 lb/ft of torque to the ground on F70-14 tires with 4.10 gears and a 4-speed and a double pumper carb. It ain't all that easy when you only do it once a year. Congratulation again to Paul in the Duster - lots of the racers respect him and his abilities.
So now that all the buttheads that jumped on the duster bandwagon just dont get that the camaro of Andy's was explained in his comment and no more need to be said except that that camaro just needed to be put to its potential with a good sticky set of back rubber and then it would change your mindless comments about doubting it and any of us knows this without having to think to hard .Thankyou Andy for sharing the experience with such a legend of a car as yours .Its an awesome piece of the past kept and cared for .
@@craigewen2878 ; I'm sure that most of us gear heads are well aware of the the COPO potential. The point being, a COPO is not "pure stock". That's like saying a 427 Thunderbolt is "pure stock". @@rightousman I was born in 1970 so I missed that era but I am a Gearhead and I remember when I was a kid my friend's dad had a 1970 Duster with a 340 and 4 speed. Other guy had like a 1970 BBF Mustang and some other guy had a Firebird. I remember my friend saying that no one would race his dad with the Duster. I do know that with some minor things, headers, cam & carb upgrade the 340 was an absolute beast. Incredibly over shadowed by the 426 and especially the 440.
Back in the day, I owned a total of 6 A bodies. All 340s. Some were stock and some were not. With just a few changes, they were deadly on the starting line. Just like this one. I actually owned a 71 Duster exactly like the one in this race except mine had Cragars on it. I had a sticker in my dash that said "you spin I win." A guy told me one night my car left like it was mad about something. Those were the days.
@thephantompunch I didn't own all 6 at one time. I sold them, traded them, like everyone else, I had no idea they would one day be worth a small fortune. Sold my black 71 Duster when my wife was 8 months pregnant with our first kid. Needed the money.
Buddy of mine in high school had a Demon 340-- his dad had a shop and was a Mopar maniac, and they had it stock aside from modern tires, think they slightly widened stock rims. However, the engine was lovingly blueprinted, stock technically but all the factory mess ups erased (casting flash in the ports smoothed, that sort of thing). Dang thing was FAST for a high school car in 1995, power delivery was amazing, like getting pulled by a giant rubber band or something. Ran consistent low 13's, think he got a few 12.90's on good days. Every now and then someone else at school would try to race him and it always ended up a slaughter.
340 out of the box was a big block killer ! And 350 novas Camaros had no chance in factory stock form! Had a 69 Barracuda formula S 4 speed 391 gear it was bye bye 👋 by 2nd gear. Miss that car
Agreed....The 114.79 and 114.81 trap speeds will attest to that.....curious to see what tires and psi were used on both vehicles....obviously (as noted) the Duster was suspension tuned as well as motor tuned for these specific events......good to see an underdog win....even if it was a "ringer car"
@@ScottSmithHarms @Scott Smith Settle down there Francis!! LOL I understand the rules involved....I ran my '69 AMX 390 4 spd in NMCA TOP Stock back in the 90's to low 11 ETs taking advantage of anything/everything the rules allowed......The "ringer" moniker i gave the Duster is because the owner obviously took advantage of every performance enhancer allowed, while the COPO Camaro owner IMO did not....as I said in my previous post above the trap speeds of near 115 mph on 2 passes shows the COPO was having traction problems (in both lanes)....a simple tire change and/or dialing in the psi would've made the difference here.....the Duster's owner probably had the right tires and psi set, forward clamps on the rear leaf springs, adjustable pinion snubber, 50/50 rear shocks, 80/20 front shocks, 6 cylinder front springs, etc....all within the rules and took advantage of each and every one of them.....no "stock" Duster 340 runs 12.2's LOL....the COPO in this video qualified at 12.37 so again tires/psi dialed in the COPO wins...no bias here, I love the Duster 340 and I'm an AMC owner so I'm all for the underdogs....but facts are facts....Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃
@@FIRE-WOOD Scott Smith is correct they both are on the same playing field. The COPO owner changed out his iron 427 for the lighter and higher HP ZL1. It sounds like you've never been to this event or even know the rules ? They both run the same tires, all cars run reproduction bias ply tires, this is the best tire wit hthe best traction qualities , these aren't like the original slippery tires back in the day, with a MAX width depending on the series ie: 60 or 70 series , G in the 70 series and also I think it's G in the 60 ... same size on all 4 corners except for cars that came that way from the factory and I'm 99.9% sure that is only the AAR Cuda and T/A Challenger. They set the tire pressure in the rear to get maximum tread contact on the ground and overinflated the fronts some for less tread contact. The COPO had 2 disadvantages , one was the Dusters owner , as soon as I heard the name I knew the Duster was going to be fast, and the second was the owners choice of a 4 speed transmission. I raced this event in 2006 , hope to get back there in 2021 with my 383 4 speed Dart GTS . Happy Thanksgiving!
The 340 made more than 275 horsepower, Mopar cheated insurance companies by rating the horsepower number before peak power. They made 320 horsepower at 5500. Hot Rod Magazine did an article on it a while ago.

True. Even the stock high compression 340s could take out the stock, much heavier GM 400 cube muscle cars back then. Olds 442s, Buick GS 400s, base 400 GTOs, 325 horse 396s were all meat for the lighter, faster A-bodied 340s. The GMs, back in the day, could not hook up off the line, like the Mopar rear suspensions allowed. That, weight advantage and a severely under rated 340 engine made them giant killers that embarrassed much more expensive rides.....and who doesn't love doing that?

@@godhand101 no one cars about your crap mustang. And if you don’t understand traction limiting drag strip performance then you don’t know a thing about drag racing. And yes, the ZL1 was underrated around 100 hp. This information is easily accessible on the internet.
You mentioned the track test of the ZL1 back in 1969: Then Editor of Hot Rod Magazine, Ro McGonegal, featured a story on the 1969 test in a June 1998 issue. According to Ro, the test was conducted at the Kansas City International Raceway, on what appeared to be a cold off-season day as indicated by the gray skies, bare trees, coats and hats. He stated the ZL1 with headers pumped out 575 hp (vs its factory rating of 430hp). They tried 8" slicks and destroyed them with a best time of 11.64. Furthermore, the car had the TH400 which had a very incompatible factory stall converter, so they even had to resort to "mat the throttle with the transmission in Neutral and then yank the lever into Low" which made things real squirrely. According to Ro, the Chevy press introduced a ZL1-powered corvette later that year with 10" slicks and belted out 10.70 "all day long with idiots at the wheel!"

@@dartgts383 Roger. I think this is why some of the smaller engines often do so well. Some of these big block cars could never reach any real potential without traction or free-flowing exhausts. This is one of the main reasons some of the modern muscle cars do so well in factory trim: much better rubber and nice factory tubed headers rather that the measly cast manifolds!
Badger Bait Absolutely true , but there’s so few who read that article or the few people who were into street drag racing that are still around who remember the late 60s when the L-88 & aluminum ZL-1 were without debate the most feared.

Great video that brings back some good memories of my 1970 Duster 318 three speed manual. The 1970, 318 made 245 horse power. I was twelve years old when my older brother bought a new '72 Duster 340. What an incredible machine. I miss that car. The Duster and Camaro in this video are so cool. I would love both of them.
I really miss being a member of the local Mopar Club back in the mid-90's. My friends in the club turned me on to a 1-owner '76 Feather Duster. $250. The owner didn't think it would move under its own power. After checking the fluids, hoses, and belt, I slapped a new battery in it and drove it home (about 12 miles). The only mishap was a giant clump of pine straw and other unknown debris that decided to vacate the vent box and hit me in the face while on I-20. I had the window down, and it exited to whatever fate awaited. Maybe one day I'll own another...
The secret to traction with bias-ply tires was to over-inflate them. Those bias-ply tire spread flat instead of crowning. Ford Drag Team taught me that in 1970 and it worked. My '69 Boss 302 Mustang went near a full second quicker just by over-inflating the tires to 35-38 psi instead of 28 psi.
I need an explanation on how a 'stock 340' is running low 12's - that's as fast or faster than a Hemi. What am I missing? Detroit Horsepower outputs peaked in 1970 - adding to my confusion on how a '71 - an even lesser 'stock 340' - is flirting with 11 second quarter times. If the camaro had any traction it could hit 11's - it's also easily pushing 500hp - no chance that 340 comes stock with 500hp.
It's a full on race modified, obviously. The postings (and these events) are bordering on pointless, as levels of modification clearly are not matched up.
They allow up to 0.070" over, 1.5:1 extra compression, they could have put a '68 340 4 speed cam in there or more, every part in there has probably been touched Uncle Tony style with factory parts that have been whittled away at until they act like straight aftermarket. It would need 350whp or 400 crank to run a 12.2 weighing 3280 according to a 1/4 mile calculator.

I had a '72 Demon 4-speed 340 and put '68 heads on it with 340 TA six pack cam, reworked Thermoquad and distributor, flipped air cleaner lid and adjustable pinion snubber . Mr. Norm's Grand Spaulding Dodge did all the work. I used to sidestep the clutch at 4,000rpm at launch. It was a very fast car. It would just plant the tires and go like the Duster in the vid. Secondaries were locked out until motor was at operating temp w. the Thermoquad. I used to bring it around cold, find a race and let the guy drive mine first saying "Mine's really fast, drive it first and see if you still want to race." He'd take mine for a spin and come back ready to take my money. I'd double down on the bet, warm the car up and take his money.

Over in F.A.S.T., guys chose reproduction tires over radials because they can get better traction with them. The old polyglass tires grip well right before they're bald. Drag radials would be even better but that's not the spirit of either class.

After owning over 300 cars in my life, I narrowed it down to the cars I wanted when I was a youngster. 1971 Duster 340, 1969 Camaro SS396 and a 1969 Mustang Convertible 428CJ. I missed a opportunity to purchase a ZL1 engine when the owner wanted a, new at the time, 572 crate motor. I grew up learning the saying, "You snooze you loose", very well. In other words if you want it, don't think, BUY IT!!! Opportunity may never come again.
I totally agree. I love these cars and these races but a little rationale here. In my experience, there is no possibility of getting a Duster 340 AT to run 12.26 within these rules. Seriously folks, read the rules. You could get some incremental HP with a blue print and balance, the overbore, some ignition and carburetor work, a port and polish of the heads. But nothing that will get you anything close to a 12.26 especially on those tires. Do they do any teardowns? I think not. I had a 70 Duster 340, 4 spd, 3.91 gears. No spare or jack in the trunk, no wipers, not even a radio, no ww fluid, lightest battery that could start it. Could barely crack a 14.5. Bone stock on the E70's with a factory supplied i.e. "hand built" engine for magazine testing i.e. Hot Rod Magazine or such and a supertune with Ronnie Sox on the 4 speed with a soft launch you might get a 14.2 at sea level, cool air. A 12.26 ? With the 3 speed torqueflite? No chance. I have listened to some of these cars at idle or slowly moving through the pits, doesn't sound like a factory cam to me.
@@burningblue1254 here we go, more morons that don’t understand drag racing. The Duster is barely 3200 pounds. You don’t even need 350 net horsepower to hit 12.3 seconds in a car that light. @@therealhonestabe7839 I guess we idiots and morons are healthy skeptics! I will recant my previous statement. Cams must the actual advertised lift of the original factory cam. The temperature tells me this may have not been the September race and actually one that was ran in the spring, the air was very good that day. I owned many II' s- including 2 King Cobras. Junk? No.. Weak powered? Yes, but one can always build a nice engine, and power.. I did. Loved all of them..
The owner of the Duster really has that car set up. Well done. When reading the rule book it’s just as, if not more important to read what the rules DON’T say vs what they DO say. 😉
Thanks for making these videos! I love learning about the cars and the commentary makes me laugh all the time😆. Keep it going with the fart sounds. They are perfectly placed and selected. Don’t let anyone tell you farts aren’t funny.
Out of all the cars in Pure Stock this year (around 108-109 in total) this car by far had the fastest 60 foot time. 1.77 seconds....... and the next closest was around 1.85!
Thanks for commenting Andy (Tom)! It’s always nice seeing the car out there and everyone appreciates it!

@@FIRE-WOOD Scott Smith is correct they both are on the same playing field. The COPO owner changed out his iron 427 for the lighter and higher HP ZL1. It sounds like you've never been to this event or even know the rules ? They set the tire pressure in the rear to get maximum tread contact on the ground and overinflated the fronts some for less tread contact. The COPO had 2 disadvantages , one was the Dusters owner , as soon as I heard the name I knew the Duster was going to be fast, and the second was the owners choice of a 4 speed transmission.
Yes, I’ve read about that in the past. Those times are definitely achievable with slicks and headers!

@@dartgts383 Roger. I think this is why some of the smaller engines often do so well. Some of these big block cars could never reach any real potential without traction or free-flowing exhausts.
My 70 Duster pulled the same times with the 4:30 gears.
Great video! A Duster 340 is a muscle car killer! Thumbs up!
Make sure you join the “Stock Appearing Drag Racers” group on Facebook to support these drivers!
The 340 is most underrated engine built. It is the best engine for beating big block cars
That's a lie. The 351C was always the darling of Prostock. Factory heads flow enough to support over 600hp. It took W2 or SB2 heads for any other smallblock to compete.
Good ol David vs Goliath match up! Seen this Duster run several times and it's for sure engineered where all components work together, just curious what he has it stroked out to. Another great video of two great cars, keep them coming.
It’s not stroked, that’s not allowed in Pure Stock. Compression ratio pushed to max plus all other mods Pure Stock allows. This is pretty much the quickest a 340 will ever run in this series. I don’t think there’s much more room for improvement.
@@CarsAndZebras thanks for the clarification. Idk why but I was under the impression you could change the internals just not the cam and the outside had to retain all stock components. Anyways thanks for pointing that out and as a Mopar guy I'm even more impressed with that mini wedge that runs like a max.
12.26 from a pure stock Duster, they ran 13.90's or slower in pure stock trim.
So you’re telling me, a car from the factory making 320 gross horsepower (the real rating, which is around 290 net), with an overbore, compression ratio increased 1.5 points, electronic ignition, mandrel bent exhaust, with complete balancing/blue printing and tuned for 110 octane can’t make 350 net hp? Idiots. And yes, they do require tear downs. Almost every year they ban at least one car.
@@burningblue1254 Like you I love the cars of this era but have to wonder what pure stock means to these guys.
@@therealhonestabe7839 I guess we idiots and morons are healthy skeptics! I will recant my previous statement. It is possible to run the 12.26 since these vehicles are heavily heavily heavily massaged and given the rules. But to run these times and mph requires incredible dedication and testing. I say this because I know a guy running L/SAT with a 67 Chevelle 283 and he has run in the 11.8's. I remember the days of NHRA pure stock which literally amounted to removing your hub caps and pulling out your air filter.
@@burningblue1254 They do inspections if one chooses to go thru the process. The owner of this car, Paul Petcou, knows his stuff and I'll wager that his car has gone thru the certification processes they do or he would have been asked to have the car looked over to continue for the day. They allow these engine to be built to NHRA factory stock spec , ALL the cars are allowed it. There are no roller rockers , no porting of any kind , stock part number carbs , stock cast iron exhaust manifolds and a max 2.5 " exhaust to the rear bumper. As far as an electronic ignition it's either a pertronics type or a factory type box, no MSD or the like is allowed, those cars that have a dual point actually run them as they are better than the electronic ignition you are allowed to use. Cams must the actual advertised lift of the original factory cam. The temperature tells me this may have not been the September race and actually one that was ran in the spring, the air was very good that day. The reproduction bias ply tires they run have a naturally sticky compound as they are made , that's why you don't see anyone but the casual or first time racer at this event running radial tires. I think the F70-14 redlines I have ran me about $500, back in 2006, when I bought a set to race there .
I had a '68 barracuda 340 4speed, although with the lame 3.23...but still it could fire out of the chamber...the A body 340 is an amazing combo
And this is at the track can you imagine what it would look like if they were on the street
Back in 70 I saved and saved from the age of 8 and when I was 15 1/2 me and dad went car shopping and found a 70; 340 4 speed 3.91 gears got my license and put headers on and ran 13.23 @ 104 these cars were so fast enjoyed that car through high school beat a lot of bid blocks ! Go Mopar
God bless you 🇺🇸
Another excellent video with two of my favorite cars. I owned a 69 Camaro with a small block 400 and an automatic and also owned a 72 340 duster with a three-speed manual and have to say that the duster with that relatively small engine was quite impressive
340's definitely didn't run like that off the lot, I had two. Definitely well prepped. The ZL1 with slicks is a sub 11's car for sure with over 100hp advantage. Love the 340s though. A friend has a stroked one in an AMC Spirit with nitrous when needed on the street and that thing is a beast at

Diehard Mopar guy here... when I saw the match up in the title even I figured no way José. But damn, that Duster though! Both cars are awesome, and I wonder about two things: how many rpm was that 340 pulling when it was screaming at half track in 2nd gear, and how far into the 11s would that COPO have gone with a meaty set of slicks 🤔 Great video!
Nice race! Would have been interesting if the Camaro was running closer to the qualifying ET. Would have been some really close races then!
Both nice car's, but the Duster get's to me. Back in 1972 my older brother bought a new bright yellow 340 Duster. Loved that car and miss it. In 1976 he went on a German car kick and traded the Duster for a new BMW 2002...What a mistake.
I'd say the duster is making a lil more than 275 hp , 110 mph trap speed is rolling out... Impressive 340, jack the giant killer.
Yeah, probably around 276 hp 😆
I owned a 1970 Duster 340 which I bought used in1971. That car surprised a lot of people on the street.

That is incredible I definitely would’ve put the money on the ZL 1 .
Camaro needs a driver mod.
The automatic and upgraded gearing helped the duster win, if these cars were racing further the camaro would have caught and passed it every-time
In other news, it's reported the Duster was actually driven by Limu Emu
😆

The guy in the Duster had it set up right and knew how to drive and it was tuned right. That ZL1 should have totally smoked the 340.
How can anyone call a Yenko or COPO "pure stock"?
yea....its kinda bs tbh. if that copo is "pure stock", then the hemi dart is, and the ford equivalent is too.
@@frigglebiscuit7484 ; Yeah, I don't get it. That's like saying the 1965 GT350's are "Pure Stock". "real fine,409"? Yeah, right....
@@frigglebiscuit7484 read the rule books in most of these freak shows. They specifically target solid lifter Hemi cars and a few Ford's to keep them out of the line up. Most of them got the word Super Stock in their factory terminology. GM cars didn't because of the corporate race ban.
