- 1971 Plymouth Cuda 426 Hemi drag race 1969 Chevy Camaro ZL1
Jordan Pennington's 1969 Camaro ZL1: • Stock Appearing 1969 Z...
First car is a 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda. The other a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The Hemi Cuda of course features a 426 Hemi V8. The Camaro has an all aluminum ZL1 427. The Hemi Cuda was rated 425 horsepower stock, and the ZL1 430 horsepower...both very underrated. Both cars feature automatic transmission. The Hemi Cuda has a TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic, while the 1969 Chevy Camaro has a TH400 (Turbo 400). Rear gearing is unknown for both cars. Curb weight for the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is around 3500 pounds, so it has a weight advantage over the 3721 curb weight of the Hemi Cuda. The Hemi Cuda option was expensive, running around $871. However, the ZL1 option was a whopping $4160!! There were only 69 total 1969 Chevy Camaro ZL1 produced, and even less 1971 Plymouth Cuda Hemi automatic equipped cars at 48. Original testing of the ZL1 by Hi Performance Cars magazine in 8/1969 with a completely stock car netted 13.16 seconds @ 110 mph. However, only 3 months early Super Stock magazine used the same car, threw on a set of open headers and 6.5 inch wide slicks, and ran 11.64 seconds @ 122 mph. The 1970 Hemi Cuda was assessed by Cars Magazine and ran the 1/4 mile in 13.45 seconds @ 115 mph...but that was a convertible with an automatic transmission and 4.10 gears.
Remember, both cars participate in the FAST (Factory Appearing Stock Tire) series of drag racing. Please visit their website. www.fastdrags.com
Here are their rules:
ANYONE USING NITROUS OXIDE WILL BE BANNED FROM PARTICIPATING FOR LIFE!
ENGINE
2.01 Engine block must appear to be a correct* original block and must be of the same engine family and exterior size.
The block must be made from the same material as the correct* original block. Approved aftermarket replacement blocks are allowed (see list below).
There will be a 560 cubic inch limit on all engines except the Ford 429/460 based power plants which will be allowed 620 cubes.
If you think you can get more than the allotted cubic inches out of a stock production block you will have to contact the FAST Board of Director and have your combination approved prior to racing.
2.02 Dealer installed engines and dealer performed modifications are not allowed.
2.03 Cylinder Heads and Intake Manifold MUST be correct* OEM casting, have correct* original casting numbers and be of correct* original material.
This may very well be the most important and teched F.A.S.T. rule.
Note: Any cylinder head or intake manifold that is not the correct* casting number, must be approved and published on the F.A.S.T. website.
Casting date codes are not looked at and are not part of the tech process.
2.04 Internal engine modifications OK.
FUEL SYSTEM AND CARBURETOR
3.01 The carburetor must appear externally correct*.
Internal modifications are OK. Carburetor housing must be the correct* housing for your application. The stamped part number need not be correct*.
For example any 750 Q-jet can replace any 750 Q-jet as long as it externally appears correct*, but an 800 Q-jet cannot replace a 750 Q-jet, even if it does appear externally correct.
EXHAUST
4.01 Cast iron exhaust manifolds are mandatory and must be correct*, have correct* casting numbers and be of correct* material.
Under no circumstances will headers be allowed, including those cars that had headers delivered in the trunk.
Internal modifications are OK. Correct* appearing exhaust manifold paint or coatings are OK. Casting date codes are not looked at and are not part of the tech process.
4.02 Even if equipped from the factory with cut-outs, all runs must be made with closed exhaust running through the mufflers.
4.03 Exhaust systems may be upgraded to a maximum of 2.5" diameter head and tail pipes.
Exception: Certain Max Wedge cars left the factory with 3" inch head pipes, these cars can retain these head pipes up to, but not past, the transmission tail-shaft.
IGNITION SYSTEM
8.01 The distributor, distributor cap and coil must appear correct,
Distributor housing does not need to have original part number stamped in body.
8.02 Coil must be retained in the correct* location.
8.03 Aftermarket ignition boxes allowed, if mounted out of sight.
DRIVETRAIN
11.01 Vehicles that only came with 4-speeds may convert to automatics and vice/versa.
This must be done in a matter that reflects how the factory would have done it, OEM correct* shifters, linkage, consoles if equipped,
and hardware MUST be used and the conversion must look 100% correct to the FASTRACES LLC.
REAR AXLES
12.01 The rear axle housing must be of the same manufacturer as the car. OEM appearing aftermarket housings are OK.
Internal modifications are OK. Any gear ratio allowed. Aftermarket axles are OK.
Upgrade to posi-unit or spool is OK.
You don’t wanna miss this one
I don't want to miss any of them
So um... deployment for five months?
Glad to have you back guy!
You’re back 👍👍 really missed your commentary & awesome American Muscle match-up videos
You're back!!!🎊🎉🎊🙏
Yessssssd heesssssss backkkkkkkkk
It doesn't get any better than that, 69ZL1 and a Hemi Cuda, glad you are back!💪
Amen!!................Poor ol Ford.
@@chrishensley6745 yeah, Boss 429 wasn't gonna hang with either one of those cars.
@@archiebunker6059 if they were stock engine'd...which neither one is. The cumarrow is stroked and the hemi is a modern crate engine ( look at the heads)
@@chrishensley6745 if all were stock the 429 would kill the mid 13 sec cuda...

SO HAPPY YOU’RE BACK!!! EPIC MATCH UP TOO!!!
I'm glad you're back too
I literally came here to ask where was the voice over and fart noises lately, then heard the music and realized all was well in the world.
Drag racing just ain't the same without those silly fart noises & goofy movie clips......huh.
And not get trolled for asking either!
@@davidbattaglia2336 Fuck you David Battaglia....even though you were technically right.
@@therealhonestabe7839 Love you too, hon! LOL!
Honestly, we had no idea what had happened with the channel and C&Z didn't say, so it lead to a lot of speculation. Yours was a reasonable guess and it was right for 5 months!
The thing that was unusual was that C&Z had ALWAYS posted up a comment on his videos, but didn't do that for the 5 months of non voice overs. That is why I was optimistic he'd be back.
For what it's worth, he may be doing series of videos with and without commentaries, so folks will get the styles they like.
Maybe we all will win.....we'll see.
So glad you are back! The channel was not the same with out you!
I cheered when I heard the needle scratch! My wife looked at me weird.
Good to have you back doing commentary!
Thanks for watching
Welcome back, BITCHIN cars!!
Thank you jesus!!!! He is back!!!
Thank you for coming back. You were missed.
One of the best races in awhile...could have gone either way. Camaro had the weight advantage, but the Cuda still kept it close with the Hemi. I'm curious as to the gearing on the Plymouth...too bad it wasn't a two out of three!
I wish there was a best of 3, but FAST doesn't do that. They run quick 8 ladder instead.
The Cuda pulled 1/2 a car length early so I doubt he had a gearing deficiency. The Camaro ran him down.
@@wymple09 The Camaro pulled half track, they both crossed going the same speed.
With Dudek's Cuda, as quick as it revs.....I'm thinking 4.56s....or something numerically higher. It's basically a Pro Stock engine in factory guise.
@@wymple09Not if you compare the MPH figures.
Glad to hear Ye, again,...best looking Cuda, Of All!
HEEE'S BACK, OHHH YEAH!👍👍
Takes a mopar to catch a mopar
Quick draw
At this event, it took a ZL1 Corvette running 9.44 @ 145.
@@dragginwagon406 Well, according to the video footage of this race, the ZL1 Camaro beat it.
@@howabouthetruth2157, correct, but the ultimate star of this event was Pennington’s ZL-1 Corvette. If if remember correctly, four cars ran under 9.70.
Uh, the Most Often Passed at Races lost. Again. As always.
Dude what happened!? Why was your voice gone for 5 months
I'm a GM guy more specifically a Pontiac guy, but these two monsters could trade blows with each other all day. Both the Cuda and Camaro from the late 60s are just gorgeous. It's hard to beat those first-generation muscle cars in terms of looks. None of the cars today from the big 3 look as attractive especially the Camaro. It's hideous looking today.
Glory days❤
Cars and Zebras is back the way it should be
Great vid and glad u back
Also, like the video states, make sure you check out Jordan Pennington’s RUclips channel for more info on the ZL1. The link is in the description box.... hopefully you guys have finally figured out where that is located.
Will this video have commentary I miss your voice 😔
I guess you'll just have to watch and find out
That cuda ran a 9.74 straight off the trailer with a brand new engine
@@CarsAndZebras good to have the voice back
@@CarsAndZebras letttttttsssss gooo theres commentary
Welcome back. I will watch again !! Hope you got a pay raise!!
I just happen to put this on. I told my son that this channel used to rule. I said the guy would tell you all about the cars & everything done to them. He'd have all kinds of cool memes & old commercials. I said i guess RUclips were being cocks & not letting him do his thing. I said i stopped watching it but stayed subscribed. Then you started talking....😱😂🤣 That's cool glad you're back brother...👍🏻🏁
He’s back! The best car vids!
"Ahem.. guess I lost my voice for 5 months." Laughed so hard, wife came in to see what was so funny.... "Oh.. you are watching pr0n". Always love the vids, commentary or not. Loved this one. This FAST class is another level.
Thanks for watching
Glad you're back.
I hear the voice I click like!
Welcome back man!😁
Normality has returned after the 5 month nightmare & what a way to kick it off with two iconic pieces of American Muscle in sub 10s - that is awesome 👍👍
Probably the best matchup in the last 6 months to reintroduce yourself.
What were drivers like Ronnie Sox doing in ‘70-‘71? I’m sure 9s . What was the HP on those cars? To get 1000 from an NA motor is pretty incredible even if it’s 500+ cubes!
Anyway this was an awesome race! That ZL-1 is a sleeping giant!
Around 600 , but not as restrictive rules as here . With the manual transmissions may have been slower e.t. than the lencos and autos .
welcome back bruh
So awesome to hear you narrating again and spicing the videos up with pop culture references and flatulence.
Comments got “Spirited” while you were away. Glad you are back
OH HELL YEAH ! He's Baaaaackkkk.......!
Great Video! Good to hear you!!
Glad you finally made bail, and got back to making videos for us. Now on to the video. I'm a 100% chevy guy. I Love them. Have always had the best of luck with their products. But that Camaro was stated to have just at 700hp. Im curious to know how it is running low to mid 9s in the quarter mile? At that hp to weight ratio, it should be running somewhere in the low 10s. Maybe just maybe high 9s on a good day. I'm thinking the owner isn't being completely honest about the hp of his car. My personal estimate would put it somewhere in the 850ish hp range. Its much easier to get a car to go from a 12s quarter mile to 11s quarter mile time.. Than it is to take one from a 10s to 9.5s quarter mile time.
So True man on everything you mentioned.
Love that 'Cuda!!! Back in 1983 I had a chance to by a '71 'Cuda 383 with a shaker hood at a muscle car dealer in Sioux Fall's, SD. I passed on the 'Cuda. Went back to New Mexico where I lived and passed on a '71 Barracuda convertible and bought a '71 Challenger convertible from a friend. He made the huge mistake of buying an '83 Camaro Z28. A decision he regret's to this day. He hated that Camaro, and offered me the Camaro and cash for the Challenger about a month after buying the Camaro new. No way I was giving up the Dodge. He recently restored his dad's '68 Firebird and keep's pushing me to sell him the Challenger. My only regret is not having enough money for both the 'Cuda's too.
What a perfect race for the zebra to make his come back with....don't ever do this again to us....
I'm glad to hear that you got your voice back, videos ate so much better
You're back......!!!!!!!!!
Looks like Jordan got it dialed in. Tony builds a hell of an engine. The Penningtons have always been quick in the PS and FAST classes.
Yes that's Dave's cuda.
Thumbs up before I even watched it👍
WELCOME BACK😎👏👏👏
YEAH BABY, THIS IS WHAT I BEEN WAITING FOR. Your excellent commentary is what hooked me. Glad your voice came back, LOL.
Really glad you found your voice. Editing is superb and fun to watch. Thanx
Awesome you’re back!!!
Commentary about fuckin time!!!
If that’s Dave Dudek’s ‘cuda, that thing is on another level.
Edit: Oh well, I can admit when I’m wrong. I guess that Camaro is on that other level too lol. On one of the forums someone posted that the ‘cuda had just run a 9.65 though. Those F.A.S.T. cars are simply amazing!
AND Dudek is pretty much THE FAST hemi guy!!! Didn't he race a GTX or a road runner???
@@jerrycraig6522 Hemi Roadrunner. He has a bunch of cars.
Dave's cars are still on another level, just happened to be a little slower on this run. Even in 4k I can't pick up how fantastic his builds truly are.
Welcome back! 👍🇨🇦
It's about "F"ing time you came back. The videos were good while you were gone but pretty boring. Now the fun is back. 👏👏👏😁😁
great to have you back, just get out of prison for not paying speeding fines?
No, got caught granny shifting....not double clutching like I should. I'm lucky the NOS didn't blow the welds on my intake manifold.
@@CarsAndZebras You Can't granny shift thats deadly so great to have you back though.
Your back ..... yes!!! yes!!! yes!!!
Keep those videos coming 👍
Don't get any better then a ZL1 CAMARO and a Hemi Cuda... That's 2 of the best muscle cars right there and 2 of my favorites
The king is back and speaking
FINALLY!!!!!
What I’ve been waiting for. 👍🏽👍🏽
I don't even care that the Mopar lost, so long as we have Cars and Zebras back the way it once was!
So AWESOME !! Welcome Back !!
Welcome back Sir Zebra.
Thanks, but I've never been knighted so Mr. Zebra is fine.
And the ZL1 walks by the cuda for the win
