As one of the marathon majors in the greatest city in the world, the NYRR NYC Marathon is a must-do race for all serious runners. Here are some tips and all you need to know to get your very own NYC marathon poncho!
#TCSNYCMarathon #NYRR
In this video, we'll cover:
• Transportation to the start of the NYC Marathon in Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island
• An optimal place to get a bottle hand-off with fresh @Maurten Official from a friend
• Why mile 13 is where you will feel like you're having the race of your life on the Pulaski Bridge
• Why miles 15-16 you will consider dropping out on the Queensboro Bridge
• Why mile 23 is either your moment to drop people or start your excuses
• Why qualifying for the NYRR NYC Marathon isn't as big a deal as qualifying for the BAA Boston Marathon

Perfect description of NYCM. I took the bus option rather than the ferry in 2019, no idea which one is actually a bigger pain in the ass. And the wait in the village is long, definitely longer than Boston It's my 2nd favorite marathon I think. Can't beat Boston (I'm also from Mass so, I'm biased).
And that walk for the poncho. It took forever. I think every major is like this.
I'll probably do it again, I'm now into the 45 AG for 2023 so I get old lady qualification times.
I’m way older than 45 so I get jokingly easy “old lady qualifications”. So I thought about straying from my Bos streak and trying NY but I couldn’t get through the registration queue in time to get the good-for-age entry. That’s a feat in itself. So which is worse? All those bridges or the Newton hills? Not sure I want to get pee’d on before even getting started.
@@levandmarthapolyakin-aaron2183 IMO the 40-44 isn't that easy for Boston, and definitely not for NYCM (sub 3:26 marathon at 44 is nothing to sneeze at). But the extra 10 mins 45-49 for Boston - that is luxurious. Even NYCM, I now need a 1:42 half which I can do in training vs a 1:37 which is a lot harder.
Was there difficulty getting into NYCM with a qualification time? I got into 2019 with marathon time qualification but I don't know if post-covid it got crazy. I also jumped on registration right away (could have been within hours of them opening it up) and I believe operate on a first-come first-served basis.
Why anyone puts up with this shit is beyond me! Just run a local marathon lol who cares how epic it is
@@littlerunner4505 I was joking--none of it’s really easy for anyone; that’s why it’s age-graded! I was meaning to say, though, that NY age-qualifying time gets way way easier than Boston’s when you’re much older. And yes about NYC-I was trying to register w/qualification time last year from around the time it opened and it took so long to get to the actual registration page, that by the time I filled it out for age-qualification their quota had filled since it’s 1st come 1st served as you mention. Unlike Chicago, which you can supposed guarantee anytime during the registration period from what I’ve heard.
@@jp05598 Because we love to suffer😂
going to watch this once a day for the next two weeks
indeed Mike...along with my race day vlog from 2017? 🙂
😂
I think we need something like this for every marathon 😂
@@macau.friend you've not seen my videos on here then Ivan lol
@@PoetWithPace Thx to Kofuzi, I have now discovered your channel! Hurray!
I'm a "hobby jogger" and have run 2 NYC Marathons. Both times I took the Staten Island at around 8:15-8:30am for an 11:45 start time. After the bus ride to the staging area, my wait time was just about an hour. At the staging area, I had not once waited long for a porta-john.
You may not win the NY Marathon but you're in the top .01% of RUclipsrs who make videos about running. Loved it. Good luck to all who are there this year.
You are amazing. Thanks for this video.
Absolutely brilliant!
I smiled the whole time watching this video. Thank you for this great content.
Great content! haha excited about this race in 2 weeks!
Always funny AF. Make my day brighter.
Great one!
Multiple uses of *epicness* makes this video, the route and the *event* itself double-plus epic. Thank you.
The NY look on that old man's face at 6:07 as he looked at you in your cape makes this video Epic!
Nice video, think it’s going to be fantastic next sunday. -Just do not rush over the first bridge.
I ran it in 1995 as a UK runner, it does not look a lot different. It was rather cold at the start on Staten Island in 1995, a little above freezing, epic race! 😉😊
Fascinating. Distance aside, it's a lot like Southampton parkrun. It's surprising that a runner as serious as Serious Runner hasn't tested himself on it yet.
I loved this thx u running my first 2023❤
Excited to run this in just over a week! 🎉
Great preview of NYC Marathon! As a "hobby jogger", I may not ever run this race, but good to know the hills are like nothing I've ever encountered nor ever will encounter. Cheers Stephen!
NYC is absolutely worth doing if you're gonna do a road marathon. But yeah. Those bridges! 😱 the mountains we've got have nothing on them.
Brilliant.
I'll be at New York in a couple weeks, but I'm volunteering at the mile 12 aid station! So I'll get to see everyone right before the dreaded Queensboro bridge haha.
That's good. Everyone will still be happy!
Omg you are hilarious, love it !
I'll be running at this year's marathon and thanks for all the wise advices. You're hilarious by the way haha
Have a great race! And thank you!
so great…, watched it twice
Annnnnd you got me to slam the subscribe button 😂😂
What a video! Going to point my friends to it who are running NYC.
New subscriber purely for the dry wit 😂
Thanks for the sub! 🙏
the sub elite area sounds sick ngl
Woah I warm up with Molly as well makes the race a blur 💯
I looked up your time. (Yes, of course I did. I'm a runner). Very good!
I take car service to the start via NJ … gangsta move
🔑 great idea but then you need to be in Jersey
@@TheSeriousRunner nope … tell cab service to drive from Manhattan through tunnel around to SI
Great video
thank you!
Thank Kipchoge!!
🙏
Praise be...
I thought you were suggesting a Rosie Ruiz move when you pulled out the Metro card!
This video definitely buttered my bread!
You're not wrong about the wait! I was booked on the 6am SI Ferry, but actually got on the one before at 545ish. Probably not going to do NYC again anytime soon. But how late a Ferry could you get and still arrive at Wadsworth with an hour or so to the start? 730? 8?
Piss taking aside, it is a really great race to do. And i recommend it to far too many people who will never actually go and do it. 😂😂
I've done the race twice and I always go on the first Ferry at 5:30. Peace of mind just getting there.
Good stuff here, thanks for posting. Longtime participant in the NYCM, just offering some thoughts... The Queensboro Bridge is a hard stretch, no question about that. I have always found its silence a great rest from the madness/loudness of the crowd there in Queens, and before the madness/loudness on First Avenue. As far as climbing goes... all the bridges are tough, the easiest and shortest is the last from the Bronx into Manhattan for the last time. For me, the hardest mile on the course includes Mile 23 as mentioned here... it's part of what I called the "Fifth Avenue Staircase", and that late in the race, everything is hurting, especially going uphill. Don't forget... Central Park South is a long, if gradual, uphill as well.
All this being said, I wish I was going to be out there with everyone again this year.
Good luck to all, an indeed EPIC day awaits you. All the best Runners... Jack NYC
Thanks for sharing your tips! I should've added something about CP South. Whenever I've run NYCM, I find by that stretch its just like "burn everything and get it done." But you're right!
Great video! I am looking forward to my 4th Frankfurt Marathon this Sunday also as an expert 😀
awesome! have a great race!
What a relief to know there will be other serious runners at Frankfurt! Good luck
Enjoy the race Ella! Frankfurt is EPIC! I got my qualifying time for New York there 🙂
Thanks to all of you, and good luck too!
As a non sub-elite runner, I am bitter that I don’t get the sub-elite experience. So I make my own by staying overnight with Serious Runner’s parents. And having my own personal chariot to the back entrance driven by… Serious Runner’s parents. You can’t put a price on… Serious Runner’s parents 🥰
My parents really ought to rent their bedrooms on AirBnB. They'd make a fortune.
It has always been Serious Runner's parents' pleasure to have you stay with us and provide you with a personal chariot! 🥰
Lucky Perry, and very kind of Stephen"s parents to support you this way! Run Strong amigo!
Hate to call you out, stranger, but as a strava stalker, didn't you run a 2:49? That is Serious!!?@%^!!!
@@mjmillerusa no I didn’t. I ran a 2:48! Get it right Mike! 😝
Hilarious! 🤣🤣
After travelling all over the world to run in marathons, I have just surrendered myself to the idea that I have come to love the suffering before the the crucifixion.
Wow - i thought this was going to be another “tongue-in-cheek” Seriousrunner vid. Having run NYM i can atest it was totally factual! 😂👍🏃♂️🏃♂️
🙏 everyone seems to believe this channel is comedy or satire. I have never intended for it to be anything less than educational. Thank you for recognizing this.
There is a bus from the Library on 5th and 42nd starting at 5am. The Ferry isn't the only option.
A great serious summary as always! So you were there on 2017 also? As i time qualified i must of been in that sub elite area as we had as many dunkin donuts and coffee as we could stomach before the race! You reminded me i should do a top tips video...not forgetting race predictions 🙂
yes, you must milk as much content from the race as possible.
@@TheSeriousRunner true!
Yep - i was there 2017 - love the dunkin beanie. 😂🏃♂️🏃♂️
NY is expensive indeed. But you can’t put a price on …?!!! 😂 spot on
About to go on my final NYC long training run starting here in Midtown... Detroit. If it feels good I'll just run right into the pathetic Lions game against the Dolphins. Here in Detroit, prep for our race(which was 2 weeks ago even though I didn't fo it this year after getting selected for NYC)is far easier. All 4 times I was able to bike to and from 3 miles locking it up about 1000ft from the start. I woke up later for our 7am race than I'll have to for the 9am race. This better be as good. Our first 6 miles are kind of as spectacular going over the Ambassador Bridge to Canada and back through the tunnel(only underwater tunnel segment of any marathon).
10 months ago, you wrote "this better be as good" when you were talking about the New York City Marathon. Well -- what do you think? Was the New York City Marathon as good as your local hometown marathon? -- I love the NYC Marathon.
I'm going to run these major marathons one day 😌
NYC for sure. Boston only if the BAA deems you worthy. London... well, I hope you're a UK resident.
Get to the marathon via New Jersey
Cat Hill in cntrl prk is apart of the course, you're just descending it. Last year, there was no mile walk to exit, you almost exited immediately after finish
Well, yeah. but you don't climb it. Wait -- no mile long walk?? Was that a COVID thing??
@@TheSeriousRunner I believe it was a covid thing, with less people, everyone exited right at 72nd and got their poncho. Typical years, you walked from finish(tavern 66th) up to the 80s to exit, then walk back down cntrl park west to 72nd to get ponchos and head towards subway and traffic. Walk of hell
Thank you for closing the city and roads and putting traffic into a nightmare.
Content comes first.
We should be funding this guy 🤣
there's a super thanks button 🤣 just kidding. Im holding out for that Tracksmith sponsorship
@@TheSeriousRunner I pressed the super thanks button after watching this haha
can I walk the Verazzano bridge to the start line?
As far as I know, you must board a bus in Manhattan (if you're fast or your charity provides one) or take the Staten Island Ferry. If you manage to find a place to stay the night before on Staten Island, you can get dropped off at Fort Wadsworth and walk in
You cannot put a price on epicness. You can put a price on ciele hats and Tracksmith singlets.
Some of us simply apply year after year and receive the rejection letter. It's a tradition of sorts.
where are you located? there's a few avenues in
@@TheSeriousRunner Central NY, so kind of too far for the 9+1. Unfortunately not fast enough for qualifying time entry. I'm such a hobby jogger 😆
Yes, lottery reject 7 years in a row.
The BAA is actively working on getting this video taken down for the mention of Heartbreak Hill
😱
5 straight years of running nyc has come to an end ,but im hyped to cheer and take pics.. Ocean Breeze facility stalker, I see you Se,umm certain youtube Sock Reviewer
Careful, I don't want to have to implement a Lets Run-style moderation to these comments.
@@TheSeriousRunner true, mentioning that name has a way of getting threads deleted. edited !
Is running a good as a workout as something strenuous, like pickleball?
😡😡😡
I don’t think I can use this platform to discuss the next big idea. It’s probably against RUclips rules 🤣
@@TheSeriousRunner Rules are here for your protection.
Ha!
I really thought you were gonna take a shot at the BAA here 😂
😞 i know they're watching.... the BAA is always watching....
Calling out @SethDemoor again after his filming antics before the race last year.
It is not my intention to "call out" anyone on this channel. I've just learned from the Great RUclipsrs who have come before me, whether it is the importance of coffee shots, standing shirtless in your kitchen, strategically planting cameras inside of places, staging shots, etc. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.
@@TheSeriousRunner That is why, sir, you are a legend.
As a serious running. I really like to be the 1st comment
if you're not first, you're last
Bagels
Definitely a good solution for waking up at 4am and not racing til 9, with travel
There’s plenty of porta potties!!
In local competitive maybe

Don't worry. You're not the only one.
No coffee making slo mo’s wtf
Regular running vlog coming Wednesday. Don't worry ☕️
@@TheSeriousRunner thanks I was worried you’d pivoted
No one is going to believe me that NYCM ‘22 was too warm and that’s the reason why I miss my goal by 30’ 😂 I had to delete my Strava account.
You are correct -- the NYCM 22 was too warm. I dropped out because the heat and high humidity were too much for me [I am from dry-heat Los Angeles].
Have you gotten NYRR permission for this video?😮😂
None of this video was filmed during an NYRR event. So, no.
