Thanks for the excellent and timely course preview👍. Will be running NYC for the 1st time in a few weeks, and have been doing research on RUclips. There is a Google Earth video that shows the constant elevation changes throughout the course, which confirms your point about the lack of flat sections. Best of luck to everyone running the race this November!

So 108-90th is uphill, 90th to 59th is mostly downhill (with some rollers and a small steep uphill), 59th is a false flat but steeper than most expect and the last 500m is uphill. So the end of the course works you hard for sure.

Having just run a rolling hill marathon, during post tropical storm Philippe, with about 910feet of elevation gain. No single hill was terrible, but the accumulation of the constant up/down takes a toll. I run with a power meter, so I naturally ease off on the uphills and put the hammer down on the downhills to try and keep the overall RPE/Power uniform. Throw in all the rain and wind, and it was a tough day. I wish I had eased off the gas a bit to account for the obstacles (rain/wind) better in the first half, so I would have had a closer to even split day. Experienced gained.
This analysis will surely help 1st time NYC marathon runners. Well done!

    • @SagasuRunning

That sounds like a rough race. I train nearly exclusively on rolling hills just to prepare for this type of running.

    • @SagasuRunning

59th street bridge is basically closed from 6am-4:30pm… no clue about the FDR. The marathon doesn’t go on the FDR, but I can imagine they may close something around there for security.
Only link I found, form last year but it’s the same route so you can assume same things.
