DIY Powder Coating Oven From Smoker for under 200 (New), much less if using used smoker.

  • Build your own powder coating oven by using either a new or used electronic smoker. Slight modifications keep it at temp and also gets to 400 degrees F in less than 12 minutes. Uses a small amount of pink insulation and parts already available if you purchase a new smoker. Use craigslist or Facebook marketplace to get one even cheaper but I decided to just buy a new on off Amazon for $158. The only other parts needed are either screws or pop rivets, it's your choice.

Just what I was looking for. They only make toaster ovens so large and I really didn’t want to figure out how to hook up a 220V oven or whatever. I wonder if an 18” wheel would fit in there. Thanks!

Hah! I've seen guys use refractory insolation... 2300F $$ for insulating. Pink glass melts at 1000temp so no problema!
Just got myself a used smoker with glass window for $50 bucks. Unfortunately not good enough so I will only be using the door only. Incidentally, the foam was burnt from using as a smoker. Doing over Id get one known for not having insolation like yours.. New not used... you are saving a tun by making your own. My box will be large enough to do rims and around-the-house items like you, great vid man!!

  • @YknotLearnall

lol - I'm just sitting here shaking my head as you pull that smoker apart, which is made by a well respected brand name, and seeing it has no insulation in the walls of what is an oven essentially. Sad thing is from a manufacturer side, properly insulating it, or building it right from the start would cost pennies. Yet they don't and then sell it to unsuspecting consumers at a premium price. What's worse is we see this across the board on so many products.
Your video isn't just for those wanting to use it for powder coating... it's a great one to show the lack of build quality in finishing out a product by the manufacturer, but also how to bring it up to a quality level it should be from the get go. Even if using it for it's intended purpose as a smoker.
Anyway, thank you for being one of those people willing to go the extra mile with things they own. I myself have found so many things I need to open up and "improve" or "fix" it the way it should have been done from the factory. You've got yourself a worthy powder coat oven, as well as a smoker if you like. I'm looking at smokers now for the same purpose, powder coating, at least now I know what to expect to have to do to get it ready to be used... for anything. lol
    Thanks for sharing,
    cheers...

like the idea , i think the size is about right for homestuff , you might even juuuuust get a 15 inch wheel in there , rockercovers oilpan and manifold would likely fit in there too
been looking at the same sort of oven , i noticed that according the the specsheet it didnt got warm enough (the newer "digital"version with the 1200 watt element ), the insulation might help or i might need to "convince" the digital temp regulator to pour just a little more heat intoo the thing
definetely going to try this , its cheapish and looks like its meant to be , not trown together from junk

Would you recommend 1/2 inch or 1 inch insulation during the build? I'm in the process of buying materials and will be using ceramic fiber sheets.

😳Way too much work, i would just experiment by drilling out a hole on the opposite side of the heating element and install another heating element. 220v wiring comes to mind with this sorta thing. Another thing i am thinking about is building a box of some sort that the Electric smoker can easily drop into and just fill up the space between the box and the electric smoker with that pink thingie.
