It would be very nice to turn these notebooks into actual books like you did with your watercolour mixing charts. The digital versions are very beautiful and mighty useful!
I’ve considered that but I didn’t reference the notes I made and the layout is very random on many pages so it would be a nightmare to put together for a ‘proper’ book.
That is a beautiful book. You know your colors through and through. Have you considered publishing it? Such a fabulous reference, and gorgeous eye candy. Thanks for showing us how it's done.
@@janeblundellartI think creating it with the approach of it being a combo of art books, retrospective, and educational. Format the book to show the pages as is, but add commentary where you feel it would fit best. I like looking at artists’ published sketchbooks.
It is something I have considered but it would need to be completely re-done to create a more uniform layout. I'd also need to reference and acknowledge all the comments and information and I simply don't know where some of it came from. So I doubt it is something I will publish as a book or even a PDF.
This is a lovely colour study, thank you so much for sharing it. I’ve been tearing my hair out trying to figure out what I want to use to set my own “working” journal up with - I haven’t even gotten a [watercolor] brush wet yet, but I love learning everything I can about my materials.
Wow, that first turn of the page just blew my watercolour-rabbithole mind! Merry Christmas and thank you so much for sharing this amazing reference. Daniel Smith should be contracting you to produce their marketing of product information. I have quite a selection of Daniel Smith paints, so this idea to catalogue not just swatches, but mixing and other relevant information too, may be a great way to put to use one of my watercolour sketchbooks waiting to be put to use. I can imagine that one gains a lot of useful insights in putting together this type of reference material.
I loved this Jane! I'm definitely keen to start a similar notebook. I'm still new to watercolour but I'm very interested in the deep dive. Would you consider a more detailed blog post on this? For example, how one might lay out this information? What things did you include (Pigment codes etc.)? I saw also on some pages there was a colour wheel. Was this on where a particular sat in the colour wheel with the primaries? Thank you for sharing with us.
It is essential to use decent watercolour paper for a study like this so you can see how the watercolour behaves on the paper you intend to use. As for the information - that is up to you. I certainly included the pigment number, series number, lightest rating, whether granulating or not, whether transparent or not, colour number and then some information about the uses or history of the pigment. I added some colour mixes or some colour wheels as exploration but that isn't essential in a study book like this. You might want to show more about how the colour behaves with salt or how it covers a black line etc. This is the third variation of a book of swatches, and as I use Daniel Smith paints almost exclusively, it was the one I put the most detail into. My books on other brands have more basic information.
Oh my gosh, this is incredible, as others have said this would be such a valuable reference book if you ever published it. I don't use this brand since I am only still learning but I would certainly pay for a book of this style for the brands that I AM using so I'm guessing a professional artist would also love this and it would be so useful for them.
WOW all the colors what a presentation and bonus two posts in a row I’m delighted just to hear your voice let alone get such a huge share of your work you are truly amazing great big hugzzzzzz❤
I have searched for a similar triple well rising dish for 10 years, looking online at Chinese and Japanese art supplies and have never found such a rinsing dish anywhere. Can't be very traditional if its so hard to find.
Just beautiful. I am fascinated by the accuracy, the genuine study-like approach that you apply when it comes to color. Would totally buy a book like this, much more to get the opportunity to read the notes rather than referencing the colours! I saw that you collected sample swatches from previous colors now discontinued. Can I ask about Malachite? I heard that it can be hazardous if it comes in contact with water. Some artisanal manufacturers still offer the pigment, but I wonder how it should be handled addressing ita toxicity. I think it's a bit more serious than, to name a few, the fairly innocuous cobalts or cadmiums.
Hmm. I am not sure about that. Yes it is a copper ore, but I only use watercolours as they are intended to be used, so I am never ingesting or inhaling the pigment. Watercolour uses such a tiny amount that I find it difficult to believe that there is an issue with any colour - once the paint has been created. Creating the pigments is a different story of course...
I would love to buy this in book form!!!! That would be amazing if you ever got it printed ❤ Also may I ask what sketchbook this is? I’m impressed with how many pages there are in it. I saw that it says Daniel Smith but I wasn’t sure if that was a sticker you added to keep track of brands or if the actual notebook was from D.S 😅
PO48 is being discontinued as well as a few other pigments. Daniel Smith says they have a 20 year supply but I suspect Quin Burnt Orange and some of the mixes using PO48 are going to be changing sooner than that.
The printed books are available through Blurb.com, which has websites in many countries so it’s worth comparing prices and shipping costs. The PDF is also available through Blurb or my website. (I’ll update the links today to make sure they are working properly.)
Hallo Jane👋 your Water Colour Book ist fantastic and very Professional - I' m very pleased If i could buy an Exemplar - i Love your Work 😍🎨🖌️ nice greetings from south Germany - Andrea
I love your videos, but please make sure you export a 1080p file (it's currently showing as 360p here). After you enter the video in the timeline of your video editor, you need to tell the editor the resolution you recorded it in (in the project settings). And the same thing again (or just pick 1080p) in the export settings.
OK - I found those settings (not sure how they changed to lower resolution but never mind...) I can't find how to replace one version with another. Any suggestions?
I've checked and I can't replace any videos, only load them again in a higher resolution. Annoying, but understandable. I have saved it as a higher resolution and tried loading it again but it looked the same - will have to investigate further...thank you though.
Please, please publish this notebook. Your knowledge and Daniel Smith watercolours is valuable to us all.

What a beautiful book full of such useful knowledge ❤.

I’ve thought about it (see above) but at this stage I probably won’t publish it. Perhaps purely digital some day…

I am thrilled you shared this. I wish it had been recorded in higher resolution. 360p makes it hard to even decipher the color names.
Wow this is like a Masters in DS watercolour. I’m very impressed and inspired! Thank you for sharing this Jane. 🙏
My pleasure 😊

I'd buy this!
Second book? 😮This is crazy wild-in a good way. It's art in itself.
Wow, your notebook is awesome! The swatches look like tiny paintings of alien landscapes. The mixes and blends look YUMMY. Inspiring!
Thank you so much!
Thank you! So inspired by your pigment/colour studies.

Look at EtchrLab. They have a range of paper quality and sizes to choose from.
