Paint out of the Ultimate Mixing Set using Daniel Smith watercolours

  • This long video is a detailed look at this set of Daniel Smith colours, with information on how to paint them out and why I choose to use them. I have sped it up in a couple of places but mostly it is in real time so I'm also chatting about how I use them and mix them. Best watched with a cuppa ;-)
    This is the set I have used to create my book The Ultimate Mixing Palette; a World of Colours, and is the set I've used for my Mastering Watercolours 12-lesson Open Access course. More on that here www.janeblunde...
    The water container was picked up somewhere on my travels - perhaps in Singapore. I wanted to use one that was small enough to fit onto the screen. This type of container can be found at Dickblick.com and on Amazon.com. You can also find a painted version at Jacksons.com in the UK.

    As you noted, it was very useful to see you do the swatches in real time - even with swatches, it seems that most watercolor videos don't pay nearly enough time on brushstrokes. When I have done swatches, I've been doing just the opposite of you - starting with the darkest mix and then washing it out to go to the lightest shade. Your method looks a lot better and easier to control. Also watching it in real time, I see I need to slow down to get a really good swatch - I tend to do them too fast, and watching your careful technique compels me to slow down too! Thanks!

    Magnificent tutorial. The fact that you did this study on the paper you prefer to use is awesome for it gives an authentic understanding of the paint’s behavior. Going stingy concerning paper, it’s a drawback if you truly want to learn.

    The 100% cotton watercolour paper really makes the pigments seem to glow. Finally did some swatches on 100% cotton paper I've been hoarding, and I'm a complete convert. I swatched several W&N Professional watercolours alongside their Cotman counterparts and was surprised at how much better both the pro and student colours looked than when on the cheaper paper I started with. The cheap paper will now be used for quick colour checking and, with the remaining (really good!) student paints, for checking swatching layouts or doing first value studies for paintings.

      These are the colours I use over and over. Some of the most useful mixes are the greens, especially Phthalo Green with Quinacridone Gold and Ultramarine with Quinacridone Gold. Then there is the fabulous range of colours you can create with Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine. And the amazing mixes with Permanent Alizarin Crimson (or Pyrrol Crimson) and Phthalo Green. For purples you can't go past Quinacridone Rose and Ultramarine for granulating purples or mix with Phthalo Blue for smooth washes.
      To make the most out of the book, understand the visual indexes so you can look up where to find each colour mix. You can also flip through to find the colour you want then check which pigments were used to make it. And write your own notes in the book!

    I just don't get it. How is it that , for instance, a red that tends toward yellow is considered warm, but a blue that tends toward yellow is considered cool? Ok.. a blue that tends toward purple- purple being a much much cooler color than green (thus yellowish)- is now considered warm.. like Ultramarine?? And the phthalos that tend toward yellow are considered cool. Ya know? It didn't used to be like that. When I was growing up, many centuries ago, the purpley blues were cool, and the yellowy blues were warm. What happened? Someone in charge said "it will no longer make any sense", and now it doesn't?

      Anthraquinoid Red is almost exactly the same colour as Pyrrol Crimson. I only chose PR264 as the pigment seemed more lightfast, though the DS PR177 rates very well. No real reason to change.
      I also chose Pyrrol Crimson when teaching as a more helpful name - it is obviously a crimson so easier for people to know what to expect!

    I would love to see a video of how you make your mixing swatches as well, please. I don’t really know how to mix colors. By that I mean I don’t understand if you paint one color on paper then the second on top, or do you mix them on a palette. And if you mix on a palette, do you use multiple brushes or do you just have to rinse one brush a million times? I’ve tried to do it, but my way seems totally inefficient. 😆

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart  4 года назад +3

      I will add a video on that eventually. I use a puddle of each colour so I don't have to keep washing my brush - its saves a lot of paint that way. You can also mix on the paper or by layering, depending what effect you are after.

If I might ask, do you wet the paint in the palette before you start or is there enough water in the brush to activate it? • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart  3 года назад +2

      Cobalt Blue is a gorgeous colour, but as it is a mid blue - neither warm nor cool - it is less versatile than ultramarine and cerulean blue or phthalo blue. I do include it as an extra in a travel palette if going to places like the Greek Islands, but it is possible to make a hue using ultramarine and cerulean.

    I like the ideal of the Ultimate Mixing Palette but one piece of information about it has eluded me. Doe all the tubes need to be 15 nl in size or can some of them be purchased in the 5ml tubes? I assume the primary colors would need to be the larger tubes but hopefully smaller tubes will work fo rsome of the colors. I'm retired so my funds are limited. This makes the idea of mixing the limited palette to get 105 colors sound great for me.

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart  4 года назад +2

      The tubes can be bought in 15ml or 5ml or, soon, half pan open stock. You will go through the phthalos more slowly as they are very powerful. Depending what you paint, you may also go through the reds more slowly. You may go through the ultramarine and cerulean chromium more quickly if you are painting a lot of skies and mixing a lot of greens. My students also go through the buff titanium and Jane's Grey fast. Some colours, such as goethite, are not available in the smaller tubes. So certainly you can use a mix. You can also set them up in a mix of half and full pans or in various other palettes - there are many options shown on my website here www.janeblundellart.com/palettes.html

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart  4 года назад +4

      Stephanie Stearns Good question. This video was unlisted when first released. It’s been available on my website for a while, but I thought it might be useful here too. As for the PBr7, it depends what other minerals are in the pigments, and whether they have been heated. So raw umber is heated to become burnt umber and raw sienna is heated to become burnt sienna. There are many ‘multi-personality’ pigments like this - I’ve written about some on my blog.

      There is not a lot of difference in the hue or the mixing, but once you finish the pan, you may like to replace with the single pigment Pyrrol Crimson. Just make sure you shake the tube before use and fill little by little, allowing each layer to dry, as it tends to shrink and crack if filled too fast.

    Very helpful video Jane. I use DS too after seeing your work back in 2014. A couple of questions:
    1. Would you expect to see the ink line completely covered when giving a colour an opaque rating?
    2. Di you know of a DS equivalent of Light Red in the Winsor Newton brand?

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart  2 года назад +1

      Yes - there are very few watercolours that are actually opaque and Indian red is one of them. Others you may come across are some yellow ochres, some other variations of Indian red, some whites and some blacks. Also chromium green tends to be opaque in many ranges. Anything that doesn't totally cover the line I'd consider semi-opaque.
      W&N Light Red is and unusual version of this colour. It is a dull orange. The closest in DS are either Roasted French Ochre, which is more earthy so not an exact match; or quinacridone Sienna is also close, but brighter again.

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart  2 года назад +3

      That change is because Pyrrol Crimson can be runny, and wasn't working so well for the hand made pans. Permanent Alizarin Crimson was the closest crimson colour to use, (avoiding the confusion of switching to Anthraquinoid red.) In mixing they are almost identical.

    Lovely methodology, your process is quite well done. I enjoyed watching your video, even if I disagree with some of your color choices and paint manufacturer. It is what makes the world go round, eh? I have found Dan Smith paints to be a professional line of paints, however I have found that they were a bit to full of themselves and there are many companies that make as good or better paints! DaVinci in California or Schmincke in Europe to pick 2! I think that they took on way to much from Sennelier and are too snooty for the paints they make! Please keep safe and take care of yourself.

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart  3 года назад +2

      We are very fortunate to have the choice of many great paint manufacturers. While I have used Daniel Smith paints since 1995, and love the ease of re-wetting, the granulation and the lack of honey in their formulation, not to mention their enormous range of pigments, I also recommend Schmincke and Da Vinci as excellent choices. If you like more honey in your watercolours, Sennelier or M.Graham are great options. Then there are other brands best suited if you just want to buy pans or whole pans of colour.

    What could one substitute in their palette for a cadmium yellow or orange; and still get the same results that the cadmium yellow and oranges produce?

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart  10 месяцев назад +1

      Cadmium pigments are very opaque, which can be heavy to use in watercolour. If that is the effect you want, you’d need to look at the most opaque colours or the cadmium hues to get the same effect.
      I use hansa Yellow medium (semi transparent) and Pyrrol scarlet (semi transparent) instead. I can mix gorgeous oranges but they won’t be as opaque as cadmium’s or cadmium hues.
      You can build these pigment up with a series of creamy washes if you need an intense almost opaque colour.

    Thank you for the video..I wonder if you could offer me some advice.
    I'm trying to make a 12 color travel pallet and have been fussing over it for weeks.
    What would you include in a good basic 12 color pallet?
    I don't use cadmiums or opaque's at all and I would want a sap green.

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart  4 года назад +3

      There are so many options. I have put a number on my website here www.janeblundellart.com/12-colour-palette-suggestions.html but it does depend what you want to paint. You can do a huge amount with hansa yellow medium, ultramarine and quinacridone rose. Add burnt sienna for greys and earth colours. Add a warm or earth yellow for mixing. Add a green for convenience. Try it out and see what you are missing.
      I just set one up that I showed on Instagram with a lovely range of Daniel Smith colours - buff titanium, hansa yellow medium, quin gold, quin rose, Ultramarine, cerulean chromium (you could substitute phthalo blue), perylene green, sap green, goethite, burnt sienna, Indian red (you could substitute raw umber) and Jane's Grey.

      There is not a lot of difference but I use the Ultramarine. The French ultramarine is slightly warmer (more purple) and granulates a little more.

    Hi Jane thank you for your great work with watercolors that we all benefit from.
    My question is how to set up the pocket pallet from Art Tookit as an Ultimate mixing pallet
    in order to get 15 colors in the fourteen color pans I will need to split one into two smaller pans
    the BIG question is which two colors get the smaller pans what would you do ???
    Thank you

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart  2 года назад +1

      I've shown a number of pocket palette setups on my website. I put 13 of the full pans and two mini pans into the palette. The mini pans can either be the two phthalo colours, since they are so powerful that you don't need much, or they can be the two pyrroles since, unless you focus on flowers, you may not need that much red.

    Another question I have regarding this palette is if you were to strictly focus on landscapes and seascapes would you change up this palette colour set? If so then what would you substitute out of anything?

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart  10 месяцев назад +2

      That’s an interesting question. You can create all the landscape and seascape colours you need with this set, but would use the reds less - largely for neutralising greens or for sunsets or sunrises or occasional wildflowers.
      You could switch Pyrrol Scarlet for another earth pigment or a convenience mixed green - that would be your least used colour in purely landscapes and seascapes.

      Thanks Jane. That’s what I do too. I have heard some artists say the tubes are not as intense colours if you use tubes and allow them to dry like like pan bought ones. What are your thoughts on that?

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart  4 года назад +2

      With most companies it is exactly the same paint. What makes it more intense is only that once dry, it can take more work to re-activate some brands, so sometimes people use them more washed out. I only use fresh paint from the tube if I need to create a really big wash of colour for a large sheet of paper or canvas.

    Ms. Blundell, first of all, thank you sooooo much for all of your diligent work to advance the knowledge of watercolor colors and mixes. I am learning so much from you and hope to take your watercolor course as soon as I save up a bit more money. I do have one burning question. I’ve bought the Daniel Smith tube paints and have put together your essential mixing palette, which I love, but I accidentally got phthalo green yellow shade rather than blue shade. Will this make a large difference when following your mixing formulas? Is it worth buying the blue shade before I run out of the yellow shade? Many thanks for your reply (as well as all your hard work!!!)

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart  Год назад +2

      Phthalo Green yellow shade will mix very differently from the blue shade. Its mixing opposite is different so it won't make the same black when mixed with crimson, and it won't make the same greens when mixed with the other palette colours. That doesn't mean you can't use it, but the mixtures will be totally different.
      If you are using my books and doing my courses, I would suggest you get the blue shade for convenience. It is very powerful so you could probably manage with a 5ml tube if that helps.

      Pigments can come in many forms. PBr7, for example, can be a burnt orange earthy colour or a deep dark brown or a deep cool brown or a yellowish brown, depending where in the world it is from, whether it is heated or not and what minerals it contains. So you will see Raw Sienna PBr7, Burnt Sienna PBr7, Raw Umber PBr7, Burnt Umber PBr7 and many other variations.

    When you say “ synthetic squirrel “ does that mean a mix of squirrel and synthetic ? Or a synthetic like squirrel. It’s important to me not to use animal hairs. I don’t want to encourage the slaughter of animals for fur or hair

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart  3 года назад +6

      Synthetic squirrel is a synthetic hair made to mimic squirrel hair. I take your point, but it is worth keeping in mind that the tails of the squirrel pelts would otherwise be wasted so using them for brushes respects that animal. Plastic, or synthetic hair, is not environmentally sound. So there are arguments both ways, and I respect your decision.

    Sable brushes are the same as fur coats. Totally unnecessary cruelty in our modern world where we have choices. Winsor and newton synthetic sable does a beautiful soft wash and Princeton aqua elite long point brushes hold heaps of water and a very fine point.
    Modern synthetic brushes have fibres that are split and microscopically chipped more like hair shafts are. They hold water.
    The animals used to make brushes are often trapped in the wild. Or else kept in hellish conditions in cages with no floors, all on top of each other. Many are sk*nned alive.
    If you love animals, don’t wear or paint with fur. ❤

    • @ohbli_oh
      @ohbli_oh 2 месяца назад

      Oh and Billy Showel also ditched sable in her line of brushes but now does a really good synthetic line with some very finely pointed brushes. Though their fibres aren’t so technically good as the Winsor and newton or Princeton elite

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart  2 месяца назад

      I respect your point of view. But it isn’t quite so black-and-white when trying to be a thoughtful citizen of the world. Especially when you consider the full environmental impact of synthetic fibres. Like all plastics, they require chemicals, factories, power, water etc to manufacture and then they never decompose. They also release micro plastic into the waterways and that causes damage to other creatures.
      I am totally for the humane treatment of animals but IF they are to be used for fur, it is better that nothing is wasted and the tail is used for brushes. I still have natural hair brushes that are 45 years old. I also continue to test synthetic fibres looking for alternatives.
      Please let’s not be adamant about any particular point of view. There are always many shades of grey.
