Herring compact palettes - Whole pan and Half pan models
I've used these palettes for over 10 years and really like the compact design and terrific mixing areas. They are very flexible in the way you can set them up with space for a brush or pencil, or for more colours with a couple of little 'hacks'.
I use the Half-pan model for my travel sketching palette and the Whole-pan model for my Gouache palette.
I've written about it in my blog janeblundellart.blogspot.com/2013/11/watercolour-palettes-1-herring-palette.html and in the Palettes section of my website (under the Resources tab).

Cleaning watercolour brushes

Watercolour is very gentle on brushes, compared with other paints like oils or acrylics, but watercolour brushes still enjoy a bit of TLC every now and then. I suggest giving your watercolour brushes a proper clean and condition a couple of times a year, or perhaps once a season. All always, it depends how often you use them. You may like to give them a good clean after a painting is finished i...

This palette has a few different names, including the 'Airtight Watercolour Palette' from Mont Marte. It is an inexpensive well-style palette, so the paint is added directly to the wells, rather than needing watercolour pans or half-pans. This gives really great brush access. I fill the wells just in the deeper end to leave room for single colour washes within each well too. I set this one up a...

    Hi Jane. I love your videos. Thanks for taking the time and doing a quality job. I like to paint landscapes mostly. The only green on my palette is PG7 (WN "Viridian"). I am looking at maybe replacing it with a go-to versatile green. I have a limited palette containing 14 colors including the PG7. I am considering replacing the PG7 with Jadeite as my ONLY convenience green. What are your thoughts? Also, if not Jadeite, can you recommend another go-to convenience green? Thanks so much! Cheers.

      The long-term issues with pollution and forever plastics are also an issue when using synthetic fibres. Sadly, whatever we do has consequences. Whatever brushes we have, or choose to buy, the best thing we can do is take care of them so we make them last a long time.

    I thoroughly enjoyed this video, thank you. I'm considering this set for travel, so I appreciate seeing the real-time colour swatching. I do see that pyrrol crimson has been replaced with permenant alizarin crimson. I would have preferred a single pigment switch, so that's a little disappointing. However, the set of colours are beautiful - love the earth tones! I think it'll be a great set for Italy. :)

    This is the first I'm seeing Gray Titanium from Daniel Smith. It appears to be very similar to Da Vinci's Buff Titanium in hue, which I always found to be quite gray relative to other buff titaniums.

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart 4 месяца назад

      It is PW6, which is titanium white, but obviously a different version from the PW6:1 of buff titanium or the PW6 of Titanium White. I don't use it a lot as Jane's Grey mixed with Buff Titanium is similar. However it does have its own characteristics.

    This is a lovely video and your explanation is quite nice. I believe that several people have confused this palette with the mijello offerings. The well in this palette are on the longer or thinner type. So many others are much more square shaped. I am one of those artists that do not fill the well to allow my brushes to pickup a less concentrated mixture of the color. I have recently seen a couple of videos where the paint was at the “bottom” and up one side to allow more paint into the “belly” of the brush yet still leave room for the diluted mixture of the colors.

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart 4 месяца назад

      I generally only fill half of any of these wells for exactly that purpose - to leave room for weaker or stronger washes of the colour within the colour well.

    Sable brushes are the same as fur coats. Totally unnecessary cruelty in our modern world where we have choices. Winsor and newton synthetic sable does a beautiful soft wash and Princeton aqua elite long point brushes hold heaps of water and a very fine point. Modern synthetic brushes have fibres that are split and microscopically chipped more like hair shafts are. They hold water. The animals used to make brushes are often trapped in the wild. Or else kept in hellish conditions in cages with no floors, all on top of each other. Many are sk*nned alive. If you love animals, don’t wear or paint with fur. ❤

    • @ohbli_oh
      @ohbli_oh 6 месяцев назад

      Oh and Billy Showel also ditched sable in her line of brushes but now does a really good synthetic line with some very finely pointed brushes. Though their fibres aren’t so technically good as the Winsor and newton or Princeton elite

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart 5 месяцев назад

      I respect your point of view. But it isn’t quite so black-and-white when trying to be a thoughtful citizen of the world. Especially when you consider the full environmental impact of synthetic fibres. Like all plastics, they require chemicals, factories, power, water etc to manufacture and then they never decompose. They also release micro plastic into the waterways and that causes damage to other creatures. I am totally for the humane treatment of animals but IF they are to be used for fur, it is better that nothing is wasted and the tail is used for brushes. I still have natural hair brushes that are 45 years old. I also continue to test synthetic fibres looking for alternatives. Please let’s not be adamant about any particular point of view. There are always many shades of grey.

However, I have just ordered one from Malcolm's website at $22 (£12 sterling) with no p&p charges! Thank you so much for demonstrating this product. Great! Glad it was helpful. Just make sure you push the lids up from the centre as they can break off if not healed carefully. There are so many fascinating greens! While I know how to mix them using yellows and blues, or greens and browns, or so many other ways, there are some that are just so useful that they are worth adding.
