Sketching on location Tasmania

  • I filmed a fragment of my time in Tasmania, which is the island state in the south, below the east of mainland Australia, and where I was born.
I spent two weeks on holiday with another 4 people, a car and three motorbikes, exploring the fabulous winding roads and spectacular scenery. It wasn't a sketching trip - though I would love to do that one day - so I only took a small set of supplies with me.
These included an A6 Hahnemühle sketchbook; my fountain pens inked in grey, Urban grey and brown; a tiny custom-made brass watercolour palette; a pencil case continuing a couple of travel brushes, pencils and nibs etc, and a couple of tiny travel water containers. I didn't take a stool or anything that would take up too much space. So I sat on the beach or on a rock, with the sketchbook on my knee.
I ended up sketching a couple of portraits, two landscapes and two leaves. Not a lot, but still a record of my trip.

I recall from one of your courses your fondness for painting rust. These lichen rusted rocks must’ve been a hugely happy discovery.

I’ve known about those rocks for a long time and was excited to be going to see them for myself. Yes - very like rust 😊

Hello! I found you today by accident!
I was on the Da Vinci website and saw a beautiful color mixing chart. I looked up your name and found your blog with more beautiful mixing charts! I am a self taught watercolor artist and if you don’t mind, I would LOVE an extended and unedited video of you mixing colors and swatching them with a flat brush. If that sounds like a lot, then PLEASE don’t worry about granting this request at all.
Victoria Gedvillas who is another one of my favorite watercolor artists mixes colors and swatches them just like you! I wish to have more exposure to this kind of color mixing outside of the grid method. What goes through your mind and whatnot.
I’m so happy to have found you active on RUclips! ❤

I’m glad you enjoyed my website, blog and RUclips.
I do a huge amount of colour mixing within my courses, especially Mastering Watercolours, where I show my process in detail 🙂

Lovely 💖 Thank you for the Pen and ink info, also. I was wondering if it was possible to put document ink through a fine point nib.

Yes you can! I’ve used it in EF nibs too. I always make sure I rinse the pen nib after filling it so the ink doesn’t dry out all over the nib. I also try to flush the ink through the nib and refill it once a month.

How do you get thicker lines with your fountain pen? Is that a special nib, or do you just press harder on the nib so that it would flex?

    • @janeblundellart
      @janeblundellart  6 месяцев назад +1

The pen has a fine gold nib, which does respond to a little pressure for a greater range of lines.

Look for ultra flex nibs or gold nibs. Also dip pen nibs such as braus steno or zebra G nib. The dip pen nibs are muuuch more flexible but prone to rusting in fountain pens

@@insertaghere Thanks! I tried pen nibs, but my paper is way too rough for it.

@@awatercolourist having the same issue. Really thick bristol seems to be the answer if hot press isn't smooth enough jn your preferred paper brand.
