Back when you were posting this i was painting with you not commenting..i went to an azo yellow rather than azo green and phthalo green yellow shade..i was having the same problem with yellow ochre that you had...muddy..not till using Lirons palette did i venture back but still wasnt convinced. I found that these 8 could lake me afield. No longer able to paint but reviewing as my great granddaughter thinks she wants to be an artist..,,me, i am trying not to overwhelm her with info and supplies, but that remains to be seen. I hope you continue your teaching for a long time..she is only 13, and i won't be here to guide her, but i am hopeful she finds good teachers along the way,

  • @connihinkel7295

I agree w/Carl Pen's comments here - a good starter set'll have a warm & cool rev of each of the three primaries, plus warm & cool 'earth tones' (like Sepia & Paynes Gray, as you have here), with as many of these colors being transparent as possible (just gives you more flexibility). Azo Green & Indian Yellow seem (to me) to be pretty extreme choices for the warm & cool yellows - but wow - when you show how nicely they mix w/everything else to make such a beautiful variety of colors... I'm sold! Your videos are very helpful - thank you!

I must have watched this video 5 times.I guess I am more interested in the chemistry of paints than the actual painting. Turns out it's the same pigment only different commercial name. :)

  • @valaamaris
    @valaamaris 5 лет назад +34

You convinced me. That is a gorgeous pallete with so many possibilities!
I didn't have the budget to buy all 8 right now in M. Graham. However, Lukas full pans and Turner tubes are on sale at Jerry's Artarama. I went to the M. Graham site and noted each pigment and managed to exactly match the pigments between the two other brands. I also made sure they were all transparent colors and matched the colors themselves as closely as possible from their swatches (hard to tell from tablet pics.) Hopefully I end up with something similar.
I have a Cotman 14 color travel set now which uses the same pigment in their burnt sienna as M.G's red iron oxide and is thankfully one of the few brands to offer the pigment in a transparent. (It isn't quite as red/orange though) I also inherited my late Nana's watercolors and she had a Cotman's Sepia and a Liquitex Payne's Gray. Not quite the same but hopefully a good start. I don't think Liquitex even makes watercolors anymore?
If anyone is interested here is a match up of the colors on sale that I bought and the color I'm attempting to substitute for. Lukas full pan Green Yellow - Azo Green. Turner Permanent Yellow Orange - Indian Yellow, Turner Prussian Blue, Ultramarine Deep, Quin Red - Same Names. I also picked up Lukas full pan Magenta which is the same pigment as Quin Red but prepared differently and seems to produce a much more violet red than the Quin Red and I thought I might find useful in Florals. It is also transparent.
What really killed my budget was the 4 new brushes and a pad of Arches paper! Lol (Also based on your recommendations. I ended up with a black velvet 3 brush round set and a Neptune 1/2 inch cat tongue.)
Thank you for the video. I found it very useful. I'm a lifelong artist but watercolor has never been my medium so the advice on pigments and transparency levels has been extremely helpful! I prefer the luminosity and look of truly transparent watercolors so Yay! Thank you again 😊.

Just so you know, the same pigment made into watercolor by different companies usually produces noticeably different hues. Ultramarine blue is just about the only basic paint color that is consistent from brand to brand.

I love Prussian Blue too. :) I learned that when making a small palette it should contain: A warm and cool of: Yellow, Red, Blue, Green. Along with those two earth tones and a black of some sort. I learned this was a good starting point. The nice thing with just being told "warm and cool" is you get to choose the colour. Makes for vastly different palettes and you can begin to personalize them.

Just wanted to tell you that I have finally bought some M.Graham and I love it!!! I began with Winsor Newton I was transitioning from painting in oils so knew the brand plus I got a great deal on EBay ( probably the first couple of years & prior to companies selling on it so was just a huge garage sale with garage sale prices).
Since watching RUclips when I was very ill and had to retire from teaching math earlier (36 years but wanted 40)…..
I discovered there are MANY different brands of watercolors…😂
    I have tried……
Mission Gold, QoR, Schmincke, Sennelier, DiVinci, Rembrandt, Holbein and even handmade from Italy, A. Gallo(it’s nice paint but not considering cost & constantly changing colors)
But when there was a great sale or trial pack I try a different brand…
My husband says I’m naive…lol….” I drink the koolaid” truly believing every person who was “using/swatching/etc” their favorite brand of watercolors were “remarkably better than anything else…usually always much better than WN…I DO believe that is their HONEST opinion!!! I just didn’t have the same experience.
    Bottom line…..
I have purchased and tried many different professional brands since 2018.
Just a few months after I had decided I was done trying any other brands…..
I’m packing to go and to stay with my mother for a month while my brother and his wife were in Europe and England. She had just been out of hospital/rehab less than a month and was moving in because they were very close to large metroplex with best medical…she had lived with me for 20 years prior)
So…. to continue…I’m getting some watercolors together (she also paints) and saw the MGraham sets I’d forgotten about (4 of the sets of 5 colors…cobalts;quinacridrones; landscape; etc….which Im now very grateful as prices 4 years ago were fantastic)
I’d never opened because I wanted to order 4-5 individual colors for my palette but had packed up because we knew we’d be moving anytime in next couple of years…
I decided to order the 4-5 colors when I was with mother and create a palette for both of us so we’d have plenty to do…
I also grabbed a new set of Rembrandt half pans I hadn’t opened yet…
I made swatches for Rembrandt as I waited for the MGrahams to arrive and it wasn’t any big deal…
Then I put together the M Graham’s palette!!
I couldn’t believe it!! I REALLY couldn’t believe the differences were NOTICEABLE and…in several areas…
    1. SO EASY TO REWET!!!! Especially nice since I literally live in the desert.
    2. PIGMENT LOAD
I have to be consciously aware of the amount I am getting onto my brush because there’s so much more than expected
    3. VIBRANCY after it DRIES!! This is probably the one quality that I believe is totally unique to M Graham’s paints and the one thing I missed about oil paints…
    I just LOVE them!❤
Remembering you had a video showing some great colors and combinations I was checking to make sure I had these!!
I’ll just need to order red iron oxide….
Thank you for your sharing your thoughts on M Graham’s paints. You and Lindsey W. both have said they are your #1 favorite. It’s why I purchased the sets as they came up on Amazon 4 years ago. (I still can’t believe I waited until now!)
I’m SO EXCITED! I just love them and so does my mother who is doing very well now (will be 90 in May) and just quit driving!!
If you ever get the opportunity please let Mr. MGraham know that he has made a quality product which IS, in my opinion, creates the best palette of any other major brand I’ve tried…..BY FAR BETTER ❤
Please excuse my rambling and detailed story….
    Blessings,
    Nancy Rolfe

Hello from Australia. I paint in soft pastels and acrylics usually and periodically ‘ have a go’ at watercolours, generally giving up after a few messy tries. But I have discovered your RUclips clips now and feel more confident. Many thanks! 👍👩‍🎨

Love M Graham paints. Almost impossible to make muddy colors but as a 30 year beginner it's the value. What value you put down wet is almost what you get when they dry. Way less value shift when drying.

Just play! Woohoo! It’s the mad scientist in watercolor painters that makes this medium so amazing! If people can afford it, get the Daniel Smith Dot Card. The best way to find out one’s favorite colors is to try them, and Daniel Smith’s is the best way to try a huge range of colors (248?). I wish more venders would do it. I noticed Schmincke is starting to do it, and I LOVE Schmincke. I wish all the high end watercolor vendors would do this.
Anway, getting a basic 12 color portable pan set of colors by a decent vendor like Winsor or Kuretake Gansai Tambi will get you your “mixables”, and then you can just buy a few half pans of additional paints that you just love from one of the higher quality vendors (don’t get cheap watercolor sets). The basic set will give you first hand understanding of the paints behaviors and the few “special” pans will make the palette uniquely yours, with a guarantee that you will get some fun mixes using the basic pan set.

Thank you for this video! I am just dabbling in watercolor. I am someone who will spend several 100's of dollars on supplies. Then when I sit down to practice - I get overwhelmed & confused by all the supplies I have to choose from! I ordered all the colors in your video - can't wait for them to arrive so I can start practicing! Also, I am amazed at how well I understand what you are explaining! Thank you so much!!

You sound like me, Patsie! I think the trick is to actually sit down and play with your paints to learn what they can do instead of a goal oriented painting like a landscape or a bunch of flowers, if you know what I mean. I learned the hard way, not knowing any better, and bought student grade paints and worse yet, student grade paper. I now know it's key to invest in good, professional grade watercolor paper. Even a novice can work wonders with student grade paints as long as they're using quality watercolor paper. Now I'm trying to learn which colors I need/want to put into my empty palette, sigh. I gotta do something with all the tubes of paint I've bought, lol.

Subscribed and watching for a few months now, keep your awesome videos up, please! Big cheers and thanks from Czech country :)

Great video, as always, Steve. I always love to see what artists put in their favorites list. I really like the way you show the mixes and compare them to other pigments. Very helpful. When I first started painting, I bought dozens of colors. Once I learned about mixing paints, I realized that many of them I didn't need and never used. An expensive lesson to learn. I think beginners will find this video invaluable. Wish I had had this when I first started.

I already have a wc set (it's the St. Petersburg watercolors- which are fantastic and perfect for my style) but i have to say my favorite colors is probably the paynes grey. Paynes grey is my fav. color anyway (and i know it can be mixed with burnt sienna and ult. blue); but i especially like the SP color. It is so pigmented that if desired it could be almost black; and granulates into a beautiful, sad grey.
The colors in the SP set are so unique; i cant seem to find another paint like them! I love these paints and wouldn't trade them for any other. (okay maybe schminke; maybe).

Hello Steve! This video of yours is very useful for choosing the most essential paints at the beginner level. All beginners should be grateful to you for this. Out of inexperience, I bought 3 sets of DS paints at once, a total of 16 pieces, and I got several almost close to each other watercolor colors. If I had known this before, I could really do with 8 colors for a start, according to your recommendations. Thank you!

I may as well change my name to Miss Muddy because my colors are all the basics that you mentioned but didn’t demonstrate, such as Sap Green, and my mixing experience is a mud bath. I LOVED THE CLARITY you achieved here. This is why we love watercolor, for it’s clear, translucency, its vibrancy. I’ve gone off into Mud Central and honestly I’m sick of it. Time to try your choices. You may have delayed this teaching but I think it has saved me-color wise. THANK YOU!

What a great video! You really model well what you teach. I agree, playing with color is a great way to learn more about the living quality of water color. One thing I do that helps me as a beginner: on my "play sheets" I will write next to the swatch which colors I've used. That way if I try to repeat that color combo for an actual painting I can look in my "play book". Thanks again for your excellent inspiration, God bless you and your loved ones.
