  • Since the day the Honda Talon was announced, people have been asking for a 4 seat Honda Talon R. After 3 full model years, Honda has finally released the new Talon 1000 R4. We spent a few days in Oklahoma at the Mid America Off Road Park putting the new Talon R4 to the test. After just a few days, we have some thoughts...

A few question that have been asked:
Q: Has there been any changes to the air intake/filter system?
A: No. Honda uses the same air intake on their race machines. If it’s good enough for 1000 miles in Baja, it’s probably good enough for most.
Q: Any changes to the trans to address durability?
A: No mechanical changes but the trans was re-tuned with the 2022 models and was very smooth in our testing. Honda also uses the same trans in their race machines.

      What trans durability issues?
The sub trans problem is fixed, the internal 6spd trans has never been an issue

Sorry, no, it's not, don't sugar coat it. As a Talon fan boy, it's widely known that one of the first necessary mods is a snorkel and prefilter. In typical Japanese fashion, they aren't listening to the customers that actually use their products. I have 11,236 miles on my 2021 Talon and it got a snorkel and Uni prefilter before its first ride. Don't hate me, bro, just speaking from experience. # ole guy 😎

Either you are joking or clearly blind. All the Talon race machines have a pre-filter or particle separator on them. The stock filtration wouldn't last 250 miles in Baha.

I bought the 2023 Talon 1000x-4 and I have no complaints so far. It’s an awesome machine. Very fun.

They need to redesign the suspension. Just not on par with the other machines. The rest of the PKG seems like a winner.

Honda does have a third party connection that does the turbo installation which will eventually bring the price up to what rzrs with turbos cost but also you’ll have dct vs a belt driven one.

It wasn’t a review it was a brochure reading. I’ll say what you can’t.
    Here’s my take:
Pros: great transmission, very reliable, good at crawling, and inexpensive to buy and own.
    Cons:
    1. Suspension sucks, back end bucks hard. The talon would be better off compared to the Polaris Ranger than to a RZR or KRX. Even the Polaris General is better.
    2. Not much ground clearance.
    3. Under powered engine at 104 hp.
    4. Front located radiator makes for a very sweaty ride.

The upper 4+ arm mounts aren't there on a X4
There are already kits to make a X4 into an R with weld on brackets.
The R4 has different front suspension geometry so it's gonna cost a fortune to make it work. Your still not going to get the better power steering

Kawasaki is already upgrading to a bike motor and supercharged. Honda needs to step it up. We need 72” wide, With a supercharger or turbo.

Prob what they need to go is DCT with a hayabusa engine, yamaha is a 3 cyl manual speed transmision.

They'd be a good machine if they had tires underneath 1:24 of them '32s or 31s tires are too dinky

      On a 1-10 scale, 1 being a 2006 Ranger and 10 being custom suspension seats, I’d give them a 7. -Joe

If honda says it will handle 32" no problem why are they still running 28"s. At least run a 30" big reason I bought a yamaha rmax over a Tallon it came ready to go out of the box. Hell big bore atvs come with 28"s kind of disappointing honda.

    • @DerangedOffRoad

I’m pretty sure Honda didn’t say it would handle 32’s with no problem. That was Joe’s opinion.

Other than looking super nerdy, the machine feels really peppy on those tires and corners, brakes, and steers really well. I'm too vain for those shopping cart wheels but it slows down a lot with 32s. The good thing is the Talon has really good mid-range torque so even with 32s it's still fun in that 30-50mph range.
